1 Cowskin Prairie 2702 Chapter Where No Division United Daughters of the Confederacy Volume 4, Issue 6 June 2018 Members - 32 Greetings, Spring has sprung! As with each season, the early part of the calendar year tends to get very busy. As the weather warms up, it can be the perfect time to participate, in costume, at outdoor activities. Many thanks to those ladies who made time in their lives to include some of these activities already this spring. Kudos to those who supported school children and the Baxter Museum and Har-Ber Village by presenting at the school-focused days this spring: Fredrea, Kay, and Sherry (with Jim). While we suspended our April meeting in favor of attending Confederate Memorial Day services, no business was missed and we look forward to Sherry's program at the June meeting. Read on for more, and don't forget about our website, Facebook page, Chapter list (of which only 10 of you participate), Chapter Library and Google Calendar (which syncs well on Androids). Now, we face the last UDC quarter of our UDC year. We need to turn our attention to other things. Get your reservations in for the Annual Meeting and surrounding Events - we are only able to accept them through July 1. A little birdy told me there are attendees already planning to take advantage of the on-site spa and golf is another great option at Downstream. Lost your copy of the call already? Pick it up in the chapter library anytime or ask me for another digital copy. Whether or not you are able to attend the AM, remember this is election year. As strive to be a chapter with full electronic communication, please note all you need to be an effective committee member, chairman, and many officers is the interest and commitment to keep in touch online. If you have interest in anything moving forward, please let me know so I may relate it to the nominating committee and/or the new President. Remember, it's great to know the chapter has done things and be able to take part, but if no one does the work, it won't last. Either we'll stall, or burn out the few that are active. I look forward to seeing you soon! If not this spring, then, hopefully this summer. If your plans do not put you in our area anytime soon, perhaps I'll complete a workable plan for attending meetings via computer. Adjutant Wes Franklin, Campbell s Company Camp, SCV, will be our speaker. We will be joined by other Daughters, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Turkey Creek Fusiliers, friends, family members and other like-minded folks of the Southland. Please feel free to invite guests! 3 Confederate Memorial Service Campbell s Company Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Republic, Missouri held their annual Confederate Memorial Day Ceremony at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Neosho, Missouri. Chapter members attending enjoyed the occasion and interaction with other like-minded Southerners. Several contacts were made for new potential members and invitations were extended to those present to attend the Dedication of Crosses at Polson Cemetery in late June. 4 Annual Meeting Ruminations The Historic Bushwhacker Museum Tour, August 1 st, should prove very interesting to all who plan to take part. Currently on-tap for the day is touring the Bushwhacker Museum located in Nevada, Vernon County, MO. The county provided the most male and female Bushwhackers in the WBTS. There will also have a stop for dinner and a walk-about of old Fort Scott, should you so desire. Several additional things are still in the planning stages, but all in all, the tour promises to be interesting. Members of the Turkey Creek Fusiliers will be joining us for the Star Spangled Awards Banquet, on August 2 nd. These re-enactors have supported and served the chapter for several years. We will celebrate their devotion to the chapter and to history. Watie Remembrance Ceremony Confederate Memorial Day Service, Neosho, Missouri The Annual Meeting Planning Committee has arranged for door prizes valued at over $500. There are some very interesting items for both the Annual Meeting and the Star Spangled Awards Banquet on August 2 nd. Will you be there? 4

6 The Historian s Corner Sherry R. Chapter Historian The thought I want to bring forth to the Historical Corner for the June Newsletter is regarding the value of historical and memorial events available to us in our own communities. During April and May there are many occasions encouraging family remembrances. Participation in celebrating recognition of what makes us who we are as a people is worthy of our time. Sharing such moments with each other is an unmatched lifting of our hearts to our heritage. Many of us in the Chapter have attended soldier memorial services in the neighboring states and communities; meeting with our counterparts in the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization and socializing with them, their families and the members of the Turkey Creek Fusiliers. We attended a marvelous flag replacement and mass grave recognition in Neosho, MO. We joined in the SW City, MO Old Timers Parade riding on the cannon wagon in honoring those who have gone before us. Additionally, we joined in the remembrance of the Civil War Days at the Har-Ber Village celebration remembering our ancestors and their influence on our present day lives. Also, as you are surely aware, we are continuing to show our respect for General Stand Watie and his company of Cherokee warriors on June 24th at Polson Cemetery, east of Grove, OK. You are encouraged to mark your calendars so that you may join us in marking their graves with the Confederate Crosses purchased by our Chapter for a heartwarming ceremony. Many others from the surrounding community, including relatives and some Sons of Confederate Veterans will be joining us in this event. Please note and share the details of the special occasions and participation in events of a historical nature that you have enjoyed. Please list them and let me know so it can be included in the required Chapter Historian s report to General. Keeping the past alive is an important part of appreciating the sacrifices made by our Southern ancestors. Continuing to honor them, in such events as noted, is a meaningful way to commemorate them and sharing the details with all the members is a special way to keep us connected. Thank you. There is another event in the planning I have alluded to before and that is a group trip, just for fun, to Natchez. Currently it is only in the talking stages and all of your thoughts are requested. There are many historical points of interest there and along the way we hope to share as a group, so please keep it in mind and speak up with whatever you wish to share. Our Heritage Lives on in Each of Us!! 6

The Maymont Richmond, Virginia According to one of our newest members the Maymont, in Richmond, VA, has the most beautiful gardens to stroll through.

She reports that Sallie Doolie, of the Maymont, was quite fond of the human figure, especially the female figure and the mother and child image, which is seen throughout the landscape and home.

She usually just wanders through the magnolia grove, rose garden, Italian herb garden and Japanese garden of the estate. She reports that Sallie Doolie, of the Maymont, was quite fond of the human figure, especially the female figure and the mother and child image, which is seen throughout the landscape and home. She was rather conservative but was more open minded than some, when it came to artistic expression, for that time period. These are some photos that Stefanie has graciously shared with you. 8 Old Timer s Day Parade The annual Old Timer s Day Parade and activities took place in Southwest City, Missouri on May 5 th. Although the town was not platted until 1870, the area saw soldiers and bushwhackers from both sides, during the War Between the States. Our chapter ladies enjoyed another memorable event. Garry K., of the Turkey Creek Fusiliers, was kind enough to bring his cannon, which was festooned with flags and carried chapter members. 9 Cowskin Prairie Mercantile As one reads back through history, the ladies of the mid-1860s were quite interesting. Living in a time period where they did not enjoy the wonders of this century, they were still able to present quite well. Let us all read, learn more, and share their accomplishments and history. Many Chapter members enjoy attending functions and wearing their period clothing. For those of you that have expressed an interest in being a part of a Natchez Pilgrimage tour, sometime in the future, this may be an image to remember. There will be many beautiful WBTS era day dresses and gowns to see while touring in the Southland. American Antiquarian Society This illustration of a personified forget-me-not plant waving to a departing steamer appears inside an American periodical entitled Family Circle Parlor Annual, published in New York in The image was reused by the publishers in a stand alone compilation the following year and accompanied poetry by Mrs. P.
