1 Cincinnati Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Cincinnati PATRIOT Volume 32, Issue 1, CCSAR Annual Awards Wraps Up Banner Year The Cincinnati Chapter SAR honored many of its hard-working compatriots and their supporting family members at the 5th Annual Awards Dinner held at the Blue Ash Crowne Plaza on Saturday, December 9th. In addition, a new compatriot was welcomed to the chapter. Inducted by Ohio Society President Donald C. McGraw, Jr. was Steve Maynard. This was not Mr. Maynard s first time with us, as he was a guest speaker at one of our luncheons earlier this year. Congratulations and welcome Compatriot Maynard! Houston Bradley Jarard And All Living Past Presidents Presidents Message January 3, 2018 PRESIDENT S REPORT Dear Fellow Compatriots, 2017 was another eventful year for the Cincinnati Chapter: we continue to increase our levels of membership involvement and participation in the community. Three of our compatriots; Col. Don McGraw, Lee Wilkerson and Jack Bredenfoerder are the Ohio Society SAR president, secretary and treasurer, respectively. Compatriot Jim Schaffer serves as the Ohio Society SAR trustee to the National Society SAR. Compatriot Paul M. Wilke received the Gold Color Guard Medal from President General J. Michael Tomme, Sr. at the 2017 Congress in Knoxville, TN. I am honored and humbled to serve a second term as your 2018 president and I sincerely promise to strive for the continuing growth and success of our great chapter promises to be a year of even greater member engagement. Our officers and Board of Management will be meeting later this month to develop our 2018 plans to further build patriotism and strengthen our fraternal bond. I am specifically requesting that we define our efforts to expand service and support to our community s veterans. Compatriot Brian Pace, our new Veterans Committee Chairman, will be leading this very important initiative. Please know that we welcome your ideas and suggestions in support of this effort. The BOM will be meeting for our annual planning meeting at my home on Saturday, January 13 th from 10 AM 3:00PM. Even if you are not a current member of the BOM you are welcome to attend. Please just send me a note of your intention to attend and we will send you the meeting materials and agenda. C American Legion Flag Retirement Attended by CCSAR Contributed By: MICHAEL GUNN CCSAR In the morning at 10 AM on December 3, 2017 the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American

American Legion Color Guard members joined their Safety Team at the burn pit site, along with the CCSAR Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard and its seven member Musket Unit.

A prayer followed with homage to all those who ve flown these banners and hope for the replacements to be properly honored.

3 C American Legion Flag Retirement Attended by CCSAR Contributed By: MICHAEL GUNN CCSAR In the morning at 10 AM on December 3, 2017 the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) joined the Chambers Hautman Budde American Legion Post 534 at their lodge on 4818 River Road for their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony. American Legion Color Guard members joined their Safety Team at the burn pit site, along with the CCSAR Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard and its seven member Musket Unit. The Post 534 Commander confirmed readiness of the Flag Retirement Burn Team and requested the verbal assurance that each of the flags to be retired met their service requirements. A prayer followed with homage to all those who ve flown these banners and hope for the replacements to be properly honored. After all units were brought to Attention and Present Arms declared, the musket unit fired their flintlocks to set off the actual incineration providing a proper and honorable end to our National Colors! After doing some research on Compatriot Cleveland, I now understand why. He was born August 28,1894 in Glendale, Ohio. He served in World War I.

On his death this is what appeared in the New York Times: The New York Times (New York, New York) March 22, 1950 (Wednesday) "JAMES H[ARLAN] CLEVELAND

Cleveland, who had been acting United States District Attorney and Mayor of the nearby city of Glendale, Ohio, died today at the age of 55. Mr.

His grandfather, Stanley Matthews, and an uncle, John Marshall Harlan, served on the United States Supreme Court.

4 James Harlan Cleveland II Cincinnati Chapter Membership Approved February 15, 1945 George Stewart, Chapter Historian While reviewing some old chapter minutes, I noticed a big deal being made about the membership of a new Compatriot James Harlan Cleveland II on February 15, After doing some research on Compatriot Cleveland, I now understand why. He was born August 28,1894 in Glendale, Ohio. He served in World War I. On September 6, 1918 he was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He was a First Lieutenant, 306 Infantry, 77th Division, AEF. On his death this is what appeared in the New York Times: The New York Times (New York, New York) March 22, 1950 (Wednesday) "JAMES H[ARLAN] CLEVELAND Special to The New York Times. Cincinnati, March 21 - James H. Cleveland, who had been acting United States District Attorney and Mayor of the nearby city of Glendale, Ohio, died today at the age of 55. Mr. Cleveland was a son of Harlan Cleveland, who was United States District Attorney in one of President Grover Cleveland's Administrations. His grandfather, Stanley Matthews, and an uncle, John Marshall Harlan, served on the United States Supreme Court." The Chapter was also quite proud that Compatriot Cleveland s Great Great Grandfather was Sgt. William Brown. Sgt. Brown received the Badge of Merit, "the Purple Heart", from General George Washington on May 3, James Harlan Cleveland II died due to injuries from a fall on March 21, 1950 and is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

5 Wreaths Across America Honors US Veterans of All Wars Contributed by Michael Gunn CSSAR Let it be known that one of the initiatives of the Sons of The American Revolution (SAR) is to honor ALL veterans, living and deceased. Memorial Day is the springtime day on which we formally participate as a nation for those who have passed. Near the start of winter, we in the Cincinnati Chapter of SAR can do this with the National Wreaths Across America Program. Following on the heels of Thanksgiving and preceding the holiday season, it is appropriate we take a few minutes to reflect on our good fortune to be in this country amidst wealth beyond the imagination of those who created the living document that is our country and heritage. We all can find our brothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, cousins, or other relatives, friends and fellow countrymen who served us and are now resting in National and other cemeteries across the country. Gary Duffield's Photo captures the Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard at the Wreaths Across America Ceremony On December 16th, 12 members of Cincinnati SAR took a moment or more to remember that we owe a debt of gratitude to those who served us, for without their sacrifices we would not have been able to keep the Republic that our Founders gave us by participating in the laying of 251 wreaths at Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton Ohio. The Wreaths Across America programs at National Cemeteries or other cemeteries where veterans rest, allows each of us an opportunity to personally thank our relatives and friends by placing a wreath at someone s grave in memory of all, for as long as we remember, their lives are real to each of us. Members of Cincinnati SAR at the Greenwood Cemetery were: Don McGraw, Jack Bredenfoerder, Lee Wilkerson, Ken Carpenter, Michael Blum, Shaun Smith, Connor Smith, Dan Schmitz, Brad Jarard, Chuck Rogers, Gary Duffield and Mike Gunn. We are grateful for all we have, and mindful of those who risked their lives or limbs to assure we keep our liberties.

6 CCSAR Joins 63 rd Pearl Harbor Memorial at Anderson Ferry Michael B. Gunn, Ph.D. Past President, Patriot Graves Chair CCSAR At noon on December 3, 2017, the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) joined members of the Chambers Hautman Budde American Legion Post 534, the Hamilton County Sheriffs Pipes & Drums and several other Veterans groups for the 63rd Ceremony to remember and honor the 2,403 citizens of the United States who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Hawaii's Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941;the day that President Roosevelt said on national radio would live in infamy. The parade from River Road was short in length, but very long on spirit. Supported by the drums and bagpipers playing the themes of United States military units, the solemn procession advanced to the awaiting barge provided by the Anderson Ferry. Once the vessel was loaded it was powered out on to the Ohio River where a bugler on the barge mirrors a bugler on the shore with a spine-tingling rendition of Taps. That was followed by a proper military prayer, a presentation led by the American Legion Post 534, and a rifle salute. Finally, wreaths were placed on to the water mimicking the ritual one would see on December 7th at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On this day, the wreaths placed were twenty in number and crafted of bio-friendly materials. The wreaths represented the heartfelt sentiments of the organizations and individuals placing them. Once they were placed, there was a silence, marked only by the straining engine of the tugboat slowly returning the 70-plus attendees back to shore. During this solemn event, we all recalled and remembered the service of those who fought, suffered and even died so we would remain free. God bless America!

7 Naturalization Ceremonies On Thursday, December 4th Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) members attended the Naturalization Ceremony at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish, on 5361 Dry Ridge Road, Cincinnati, Ohio Judge Stephanie Bowman presided over the the ceremonies that welcomed 68 new citizens from 34 different countries. The local boy scout troop posted colors and the school choir sang some national music. Chapter President Jack Bredenfoerder, Past President Michael Gunn and Gerald Knight of the Cincinnati SAR were accompanied by Ken Carpenter President of the Highlander's Chapter SAR and his wife Caroline; all were recognized and thanked for their attendance by Judge Bowman. Compatriot Jerry Knight, Highlanders SAR President Ken Carpenter and Cincinnati SAR President Jack Bredenfoerder welcomed 141 new citizens at two naturalization ceremonies held at the Potter Stewart Federal Courthouse on Thursday December 21.
