After sometime on Evelyn Street, we moved to our present location on March 20, Join us in 2023 when we celebrate our 100th anniversary! Why does the fish represent Christianity? Since the first century, Christians have used the fish to symbolize Christianity, or more specifically to represent Christ. Why? The Greek word for fish is: iċqu/ß. In English letters that would be: ichthus. If you can save these items and bring them to the building it would be much appreciated!!! Please put them in the office. Thank you Vacation Bible School: 15 Days Craft materials needed for the VBS craft pictured here: Raid your workbench, junk drawer and craft supplies for nuts, bolts, springs, hooks, washers, paper clips, wire nuts, bottle caps, picture hangers, rubber gaskets, old keys, buttons, ribbon, etc. Almost anything will work as long as it is safe for children. If you have any junk you would like to donate please put it in Rebekah's office. There are sign up sheets on the foyer table for VBS snack supplies and for the VBS Friday night dinner. 5 PRAYERS: CALENDAR: Connie Porter has visited our worship services recently and her adult son passed away Monday. Cards can be sent to Phil Joseph's address. Please keep her in your prayers. Pray for Shirley Frisby; she fell on May 30th and broke her collar bone. Surgery is not required at this time so they put on a brace to help it heal properly. June Activities: 24th: Potluck 25th-29th: VBS July Activities: 9th: 6:30 pm Choral group from Oklahoma Christian University 25th: Singing 29th: Potluck Pray for Nick and Joan Saulters; Joan is not well and is being cared for by Nick at their home. He has requested no calls or visits. Prayers and cards are greatly appreciated. Cathy Berry had hand surgery on the 6th; pray that she has a quick recovery. 6 RUHL S RULES Doing Good Works: Write a letter to your former schoolteachers and tell them how much they influenced you. Church History: Abraham Lincoln: [I have forgotten the author of the following, DR] Stephen Mansfield summarized the faith of our 16th president: He had once hated God, had felt tortured and rejected by him, like Job of old. Ultimately and through a process of years, Lincoln came to see God as good and just. He learned to rely on his comfort, trust in his guidance, and stand in awe of his perfect judgments. What Mansfield calls one of the most defining events of his life came when Lincoln was forty years old. His father-in-law, Robert Smith Todd, had died. In the fall of 1849, Lincoln was working in Todd s library when he discovered a work by James D. Smith titled The Christian's Defence, Containing a Fair Statement, and Impartial Examination of the Leading Objections Urged by Infidels Against the Antiquity, Genuineness, Credibility and Inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, Enriched with Copious Extracts from Learned Authors. For years, Lincoln had struggled intellectually with the existence of God, the veracity of Scripture, and the relevance of the Christian faith. Smith s work fascinated him. He eventually met the author, himself a converted skeptic, and spent long hours discussing theology with him. He kept Smith s two-volume book on his shelf for the rest of his life and told his brother-inlaw that, as a result of Smith s influence, I am now convinced of the truth of the Christian religion. Years later, President Lincoln made a covenant with God that he would free the slaves, a commitment that led to his Emancipation Proclamation and passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. He trusted the purposes of God through the death of two sons and the horrors of the Civil War. According to his widow, his last words before he was assassinated were of his desire to see Israel. We will visit the Holy Land and see those places hallowed by the footsteps of the Savior, he told her as they sat in the balcony of Ford s Theater. In the moment before he was shot, he added, There is no place I so much desire to see as Jerusalem. Abraham Lincoln ranks at the top of any survey of America s greatest presidents. It is hard to imagine our nation s history without his courageous leadership and rhetorical genius. Consider how different his story and ours would have been without the influence of James D. Smith on his life and soul. God used Mr. Smith to change a man who changed the world. Can your Father use you today?
