1 August 6, 2017 Our History: The Savage Street Church of Christ began on March 4, 1923 at 6th and H Streets. After sometime on Evelyn Street, we moved to our present location on March 20, Join us in 2023 when we celebrate our 100th anniversary! SAVAGE STREET Church of Christ Will God Use You? Not everyone is a Joseph, the first recorded rags to riches story. Some people are like the unnamed woman at the well, who one day met Jesus of Nazareth. You know the story of Joseph, how he saved Egypt and then saved his family. He had favor with his father, but his brothers disfavored him and sold him into Egypt. In Egypt, he found favor with a man named Potiphar, and Potiphar s wife favored the young man also, but when he rejected her advances, she disfavored him. Later, Pharaoh favored Joseph because he revealed a future problem that Egypt would have, and Pharaoh used him to prepare for the time when the land did not favor the Egyptians. God brought Joseph s family down to Egypt twenty-two years later, and they stayed there while the Amorites in the Land of Canaan increased their iniquity. Long after Joseph died, God used Moses to deliver Joseph s family out of Egypt. However, in John 4 you will read of a woman who went out to the local well to haul water back into her village, and a Jewish man engaged her in conversation, and in the process she discovered that He was the Messiah! She went back into town and told everyone, and they all met this Jewish man, and they also came to believe that He was the Christ, the Savior of the world. God used her, even as He used Joseph, to save her people. Joseph did a great work gathering the produce of the land for seven years to offset the seven years of famine that they would soon experience. The woman at the well went about her chore of getting water, and was about to give a stranger a drink of water, when her world and that of her village changed forever. Are you a Joseph? Are you a woman at a well? Most of us fit somewhere in between. If God has given you a large work to do, do it with your might and you shall have the resources to get it done. If God has merely given you the opportunity to give someone a drink of water, do it and do not despise what you have to do, thinking that it means nothing, for Jesus once said, And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward (Matthew 10.42). 5 PRAYER REQUESTS: are not sure how a person gets pulmonary fibrosis. Please continue to pray for Kevin and his health. Pray for VBS, it starts tomorrow. Kevin Michael saw a lung specialist and they have found that he has a condition called Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He currently has 73% lung function and has been put on medicine to see if it helps the coughing. At the end of September he will return to the doctor to see if the medication is helping. Most of them boldly confessed their allegiance to Christ. Even those who weakened at first soon regained heart and asserted their faith. The torturers placed some Christians in stocks; others they seated on a red hot-iron grill. After torture, they took several to the amphitheater for beasts to devour as the crowd watched. Among those was a defiant slave girl, Blandina, whom they suspended on a stake and exposed to the wild beasts. In her agony, Blandina cried out, I am a Christian and there is nothing vile done by us. She died comparing her death to marriage as she went to Christ her bridegroom. Just as strong-hearted as Blandina was Sanctus, a deacon from Vienne. Even when red hot plates were fastened to tender parts of his body, he did not shrink from confessing Christ. The tormentors exposed the Christians bodies for six days and then burned them and threw the ashes into the Rhone river. Those who suffocated in prison they fed to dogs. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. What color is the scarlet gilia? Well, that depends on where and when it s blooming. Despite its name, the scarlet gilia can be red, pink, and even white. Near sea level, the flowers remain red all season. This is because the flower is pollinated throughout the summer by hummingbirds who are drawn to the red flowers. At higher elevations, the hummingbirds leave as summer moves into August. As they leave, the plants change their red flowers to pink and, later, white flowers. The higher-elevation plants change over to white flowers because they have a new pollinator. As the hummingbird population decreases, hawkmoths take over. During this transition, the flower produces pink blossoms as it invites both of its pollinators. Once the hummingbirds are gone, the hawkmoth takes over. The hawkmoths pollinate at night, so they prefer white flowers, which are easier to see in the dark. Scientists were amazed by the fact that the color changes take place exactly when pollination shifts from hummingbird to moth. As one startled scientist put it, these plants cannot be considered passive in their environment. Who taught the scarlet gilia when and how to change the color of its flowers? Who taught it that hummingbirds will be attracted to red flowers? Or that hawkmoths will be attracted to white flowers? The scarlet gilia may be clever, but only our all-wise Creator could have given this knowledge and ability to the plant.
