2 T HE HOLY SPIRIT The New Testament shows the Holy Spirit indwelling disciples who could not work miracles. Everyone received the gift of the Spirit (Acts 2.38, 41), but the multitudes could not work miracles, only the apostles could (Acts 2.43). John was filled with the Spirit (Luke 1.15), but did no miracle (John 10.41). 3 IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT CHURCHES OF CHRIST DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT (CCDRE) CCDRE HAS A PROVEN HISTORY over two decades of assisting local congregations helping those impacted by disasters. CCDRE PROVIDES EMERGENCY SUPPLIES FOR CONGREGATIONS TO DISTRIBUTE TO ANYONE IN NEED, IN THE NAME OF THE LORD. Supplies provided at no cost to the local congregation and financially supported through contributions from local congregations of churches of Christ and individual members. CCDRE IS COMPOSED OF MOSTLY VOLUN- TEERS (only 14 on staff). CCDRE EFFICIENTLY PURCHASES RELIEF SUPPLIES. Every dollar contributed can purchase 3 to 4 dollars in supplies because of the excellent relationships established with our vendors and manufacturers. 85% OF EACH DOLLAR CONTRIBUTED GOES DIRECTLY TO HELP DISASTER VICTIMS. CCDRE OPENLY PUBLISHES MONTHLY REPORTS detailing all relief efforts. CCDRE PUBLISHES A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER highlighting places where disaster relief was provided and thanking supporters. CCDRE IS PREPARED TO RESPOND TO ANY MAJOR DISASTER within the continental U.S. (lower 48 states), generally within hours through local Churches of Christ. SINCE 1991 APPROXIMATELY $150 MILLION WORTH OF SUPPLIES have been given to those in need after major disasters. CCDRE DOES NOT RECEIVE MONEY FROM FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL GOVERNMENT. CCDRE is supported by the generosity of churches and individuals with their time and finances. Since 1991 CHURCHES OF CHRIST DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT has helped thousands of people in the U.S. when disaster strikes. In that time about $150 million worth of aid has been distributed to victims of fires, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, terrorist attacks and water contamination events. We work with local Churches of Christ to aid people in the name of Jesus. I look forward to visiting the Grants Pass congregation Sunday, December 11 th for the evening assembly and giving you an update of our work. Usually held in July, this very important ministry is one of our congregation s biggest local outreaches. This 4-5 night event attracts MANY local children and their families, including Savage Street s own wonderful kids! Material is purchased and help from the congregation is a sure thing! Faith House is a Christian based transitional home here in town that helps women and children with a new beginning spiritually and physically. Truly, I think we have all observed what Paul pointed out, Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits (1 Corinthians 15.33). The Wisdom of Augustine: On Neglecting Salvation But Observing Less Important Things Look down, O Lord God, and see patiently, as thou art wont to do, how diligently the sons of men observe the conventional rules of letters and syllables, taught them by those who learned their letters beforehand, while they neglect the eternal rules of everlasting salvation taught by thee. Augustine went to pray to God about how men become irritated when someone does not use the language properly, but think nothing of one person hating another. Christmas and New Year s Day on Sundays In 2011, several churches, including some of the largest in Grants Pass cancelled their worship services. This year again Christmas falls on a Sunday, and New Year s Day falls on the first Sunday of As you know, we never cancel services. Therefore, be on the alert for inviting family and friends who may go to those churches, and invite them to join us on those two Sundays. Also, we are going to do some advertising, encouraging people who belong to those churches to join us on those two days. Use Airplane Mode If you must have your cell phone with you, try putting it in Airplane Mode rather than just muting it, because Airplane Mode will prevent messages of any kind from coming in or from going out. On mute, you will still get the messages, and if you use your phone for your Bible, then you will be tempted to start reading them, or checking to see who called. Worship without distraction. Church History 1963: C. S. Lewis died the same day as President Kennedy. Why do people not know the day of Lewis s death, but they do the day of Kennedy s death?
