2 Butler County Historical Society Archives Butler County Historical Society Butler, Pennsylvania RCR Inventory To Calvary Presbyterian Church Records, Provenance Note Accessioned from Calvary Presbyterian Church, January 7, History During the oil boom of the 1890 s, the population of Butler and of the Butler Presbyterian Church was rapidly growing. On October 11, 1897, 229 members of the Church broke away due to overcrowding to form a new church, the Second Presbyterian Church of Butler. On October 11, 1903, the congregation dedicated its new church building on the Diamond. In 1958, the Presbyterian Church merged with the United Presbyterians which resulted in the Church changing its name to Calvary United Presbyterian Church. The Church broke from the United Presbyterians on March 15, 1981, due to a difference of opinion in the direction the United Presbyterians were taking. On June 6, 1982, the Church affiliated itself with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, which resulted in the name change of Calvary Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The church dissolved in Scope Notes The record group for Calvary Presbyterian Church consists of minutes, registers, directories, histories, and other miscellaneous materials. The record group s strengths lie within its session minutes and its well-documented membership and important religious events in its registers. The record group also contains a copy of the petition to break from the mother church and the names of the members who joined the new church. The record group has the weakness of lacking few other founding documents. The Session Minutes from are missing. Church member and elder, Jon Campbell, was asked about it and they have been missing for some time.
