1 August 7, 2016 Our History: SAVAGE STREET Church of Christ The Savage Street Church of Christ began on March 4, 1923 at 6th and H Streets. After sometime on Evelyn Street, we moved to our present location on March 20, 1960 Seeking God s Help for His Name s Sake How do you view religion? Let us see it as Asaph did, Help us, O God of our salvation, For the glory of Your name; And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins, For Your name s sake! Why should the nations say, Where is their God? Let there be known among the nations in our sight The avenging of the blood of Your servants which has been shed. (Psalm ). Children of God suffered, and by Asaph they cried out for help, but not so much for themselves, rather they wanted the help because they were God s people, and if they suffered defeat, it would reflect poorly on God s name. Therefore, they cried out for help for themselves that God s reputation might be exalted. DR Do You Have the Spirit of God? Paul argued, But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His (Romans 8.9). We do not live according to the flesh, because we are in the Spirit, and the Spirit is in us, but if we do not have the Spirit, then we do not belong to Jesus. You have the Spirit, if you have repented of your sins, and been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2.38). DR

3 A Special Prayer Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children. Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can t make change correctly is a worried 19-yearold college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester. Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together. Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold ear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judgment and quick to forgiveness and patience and empathy and love. On July 2, 2016, Don Iverson wrote: Give glory to God for our 1,263 new brothers and sisters in India. This is the end of a one-week campaign and we are so thankful God allows us to be a part of this. Regarding children's update: Eight are still in a serious situation as they are vulnerable to being taken by the government. We are still working on solutions. They are still in our care and we are thankful for prayers answered thus far. Please continue to pray. Don Iverson s India Work

4 On July 30, 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation establishing In God We Trust as America s national motto. As religious rights of conscience continue to be attacked, this is a good time to remember our national motto and renew our efforts to defend our religious rights. The idea of America as a Christian nation has often been scoffed at by modern academia, religious leaders, and others. However, past Americans have acknowledged that America is a Christian nation and that the rights of religious conscience should be protected. The United States Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling declaring America to be a Christian nation, and hundreds of other American courts have acknowledged the same. In fact, Justice David Brewer, a member of that Court said: of this republic as a Christian nation in fact, as the leading Christian nation of the world. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase, when looking into what should be printed on the currency of the nation, acknowledged: No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins. You will cause a device to be prepared without unnecessary delay with a motto expressing in the fewest and tersest words possible this national recognition. There are many reasons that America has long been seen as such an exceptional nation but those reasons are tied to the religious beliefs and the moral principles of the people that established America. On the anniversary of the national motto, it s appropriate to recognize these religious beliefs and moral principles. [I]n what sense can [America] be called a Christian nation? Not in the sense that Christianity is the established religion or that the people are in any manner compelled to support it Neither is it Christian in the sense As George Washington told the nation when that all its citizens are either in fact or name he left the presidency: Christians. On the contrary, all religions have free scope within our borders. Seattle Joins Others Forbidding Trying to Change Someone with Same-Sex Attractions According to OneNewsNow, Seattle s city council is telling everyone within its borders that it s illegal even for some pastors to try to help young people with unwanted same-sex attractions. On Monday the city became the fourth municipal government in the U.S. to ban therapy that has helped many thousands of young people resolve the problems that led to same-gender attractions. Reparative therapy, as it has come to be known, is also banned in Cincinnati, Miami Beach, and Washington, DC as well as in five states: California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, and Vermont. Christians, especially preachers, should use the word of God and not man s psychotherapy to change behavior, but the point of the article shows the intrusion that government continues to make into the churches. Remember that Proverbs 21.1 says, The king s heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes. When you couple that text with First Timothy 2.1 2, Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence, you can see that God controls the government, and He exercise that control based on our prayers. Therefore, let us pray to Him about this matter. Success Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
