1 May 7, 2017 Our History: SAVAGE STREET The Savage Street Church of Christ began on March 4, 1923 at 6th and H Streets. After sometime on Evelyn Street, we moved to our present location on March 20, 1960 Church of Christ Well-Scrubbed Individuals By L. Cole When I read that statement this last week in preparation for my Sunday morning sermon, it was one of those statements that gets your attention. Perhaps it is a statement that makes you a little uncomfortable. It was talking about the fact that we may have limited our evangelism to well-scrubbed individuals whom we think would, fit right in, with little work on our part. We can put them to work with very little work on our part or their part. They don t have a lot of baggage. What about that individual who has had a lot of problems in his life? Should we try to teach him? It seems to me that such was the same problem that Jesus had to deal with in his teaching and life while on this earth. And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Matthew 9:10-13). The Pharisees did not want that kind of person in their assemblies. Why are you wasting your valuable time on such people as that. What they failed to realize is what Paul wrote in Romans 3:10, As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one. That would include the Pharisees. The very context where we find the statement, For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10), is describing a publican by the name of Zacchaeus. Our work is to present the gospel to as many people as possible regardless of the response and to keep on doing it until the Lord returns. We are expected to keep on telling others about what Christ did for them (and us) until there is no one left to tell. The child of God is to keep on planting the seed and watering it, and God will give the increase (I Corinthians 3:5-7). You sow sparingly, you reap sparingly. You sow bountifully, you reap bountifully (II Corinthians 9:6). Jesus told us to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). He is expected to transition home next week. As the Church operates in the world let us ask God to rise up and scatter His enemies from before Him. When the Church is together let us pray that the Lord be with us. Numbers 10.35, 36 Pray for Paula Rhodes and her children. Her husband Stewart Rhodes passed away Friday morning. The Henshall family went to Idaho Friday to be with their loved ones. Pray for Donna Rich. She has been experiencing pain after her arm surgery. Continue to pray for Don Iverson s work in India. When he declared that he was a church reader, he was burned to death in Gibalea (later a city in Hungary). 297: The seven martyrs of Samos are incarcerated for refusing to offer pagan sacrifices and will remain imprisoned until late in June when they will be brought before the Emperor Maximian, reduced to little more than skeletons. Finally they will be crucified.
