I was so proud to have so many chapter members to attend State Conference. Once again, we received Honor Roll status with our two grave markings. Candace Sands and Anne Bumpus were honored for their years of membership. Everyone in attendance received a door prize. President National Lynne Schulman attended the first half of the day. She took our flower centerpiece idea to National. Next year, we are a chapter hostess. We will be in charge of the table decorations for the luncheon. We will electing new officers next year for the Administration. We have been excited that our current State President is a member of our chapter. 2 CHAPTER MEMBERS GREET PN LYNNE SCHULMAN Marilyn Burchett, Susan Gould, Felicia Wilt, Linda Tripp, President National Lynne Schulman, Jeannell Kutterer, &Jennifer Watts-Martin Our chapter had the most members in attendance at State Council. Cindy and Sue had to leave early, while Marissa and Rebekah came in the evening. I m sure that our own Linda Tripp appreciates the chapter support as much as I do. Our awards show how strong we are. Thanks, Ladies!!

3 AND THE STAR AWARD GOES TO Linda presents the Star Award to Rebekah Lemley Linda Tripp gave the Star Award to Rebekah Lemley, state webmaster chairman. Rebekah got our website in order after the death of Linda Williams. It was a huge task and Rebekah has done an outstanding job DONATION PIN CHAPTER MEETINGS Our next chapter meeting will be Thursday, May 25 at 10:30 at Avalon. Debbie May, from the Tennessee Room at the Library will be our speaker. She will speak about 1812 collections. Our October meeting will be Tuesday, October 17 at 10:30 at Avalon. The date was changed because of a conflict with Avalon. At our February meeting, the members voted to change the day and not the location SUMMER BOARD Summer Board will be August 11 at Doubletree Hotel in Murfreesboro. We will meet in the morning this year with Colonial Dames meeting in the afternoon. There will be a joint lunch with them at noon. Call Letters will go out in the summer. Felicia Wilt receives the new 1812 pin from Mary Nell Clevenger The National Society has pins for donations to Restoration of our Historic Properties. There are 3 Different level; brass, silver, & gold.

4 NATCHEZ TRACE DONATIONS HONOR ROLL CERTIFICATE Linda, Tony Turnbow, Charlotte Miller, Marissa Brown Tony Turnbow, Past President of the Natchez Trace Foundation was our guest speaker for the evening. He told us about upcoming events with the Trace. He also told us about the interactive apps for students and visitors on the Trace. He was presented with a check from the National Society. Charlotte Miller serves as our National Chairman. Marissa Lemley Brown serves as our State Chairman. After his talk, he told us about his research on the death of Meriwether Lewis. On October 11, 1809, Lewis was on his way to Washington, D.C. when he died of multiple gunshot wounds. It was reported as a suicide at the time. But many historians, including Mr. Turnbow, have other speculations. The money he had with him was missing. Felicia Wilt, Linda Tripp, Jill Jones-Lazuka Jill Jones-Lazuka, Honor Roll State Chairman presented our chapter with a certificate. To qualify for this, we had chapter members to visit the Natchez Trace and The Hermitage. We also donate money to these two sites, We donated money to our four 1812 schools. We presented 3 ROTC medals and 4 JROTC. The last qualifying part was the 2 grave markings we did last year.

Associate Council used the design for Lynne has a grandson that joined as a junior during their table decorations. At State Council, my administration as National Junior Membership. they were given away as door prizes. He was only a few months old when he joined. NATIONAL SOCIETY TURNS 125 Lynne Schulman & Linda Tripp blow out the candles. The National Society began on January 8, So what s a birthday without birthday cake?

JULIET JROTC Felicia presents the ROTC medal at Vanderbilt Naval Annual Spring Pass on April 20, Parker Horne receives the JROTC Medal on May 2, 2017 at Mt. Juliet.

7 FRANKLIN JROTC APPLICATION CHANGES Beginning June 1, 2017, the application fee will be increased from $48 to $54. Junior applications will remain $15 application fee. But supplementals will increase to $25. The State President s signature is longer required on the apllication. The application form will be updated soon on the website. But until then, use the current form and leave the line blank. Do not put a date on the checks since they are taking a while to process. Due to personal reasons, our Registrar National has a backlog of applications. Supplementals are being sent to Irene Walker for approval. Annaliese Mannino receives the JROTC medal on May 4, 2017 at Franklin High School. NAME TAGS ROTC & JROTC Deadline for ordering nametags is June 1. We also gave medals to Vanderbilt This will be the only order placed during this Army ROTC, TSU Air Force, Dickson Administration. The cost is $13. 8 REAL DAUGHTER DONATED QUILT Cindy Hays & Dianne Cannestra hold up quilt. Have you ever visited the 1812 Museum? If so, you may have seen this quilt on the bed in the Oklahoma Room. Prior to that, it was found in a box under a bed in the New Jersey bedroom. The signature on the back is most likely Willis H. Howell. Dianne Cannestra came across a member named Frances Helena Willis Howell. Dianne has added a name tag to the quilt for future generations. The quilt measures 91 x 98. The multicolored quilt has a compass point center- an eight point star with appliqued fourteen point star. The multi-point pattern includes four triangles of 18 th century Indian print cotton with oblique, trees, and scroll. The large center white square is approxiamately 40 square. The corner eight pointed star is surrounded by a triangular saw tooth pattern. The approxiamately six inch border has eight point stars, and four strips of white and print triangles. The outside border is of an American roller printed floral cotton fabric. It is backed with white cotton muslim and has no fill. The quilting outlineis a diagonal, square lattice; the edges back and front are whipped together. The quilt has been appraised at $3, Frances (or possibly she went by Helena) was born in May 9,1825 to Thomas Compson Willis and Deborah Farrand in New Jersey. Thomas Howell served as Sergeant in the 27 th Regiment of

9 the Virginia Militia. On November 24, 1858, she married Benjamin Franklin Howell. Frances joined the National Society Daughters of the War of 1812 in the New Jersey Society. Her national number was She died March 2, Do you have an heirloom passed down to you, such as a quilt? Or did you make something that depicts your family or the history of 1812? Would you be willing to donate it to the museum? A special thanks to Dianne Cannestra for providing the details of the quilt. Thomas Compson Willis Grave marker in New Jersey Belle Grove Belle Grove Plantation is located in Port Conway, Virginia in King George County. It is an historic mansion in the Shenandoah Valley. In an earlier house which no longer stands, it was the childhood home of Eleanor Rose Nellie Conway. Her father Francis Conway was the namesake of Port Conway. On March 16, 1751, she gave birth to the 4 th President of the United States, James Madison. The 1797 Manor House was built by Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly Madison Hite, sister of James Madison. Thomas Jefferson offered ideas for the construction. The Plantation now serves as a Bed & Breakfast.

10 FRANCIS RECEIVES TITLE ASSOCIATE COUNCIL BANQUET Francis Becton Jakes of Monroe, Louisiana was elected to Honorary Vice President National. Francis has served the society in many roles. In the past administration, she was Membership Chairman. Louisiana knows her as Past State President. To many in Tennessee, she may just be an Associate Member. We probably know her best as Blanche Pearson s sister. We are so proud of Francis. She is well deserving of this honor. Donna Lindblad, Kathleen dejonge, Teresa Deathridge, Linda Tripp, Felicia Wilt, & Bettie Gustafson Six Tennessee ladies attended Associate Council. But no one was just in attendance. Linda Tripp, our State President, gave a great report of the awesome Tennessee Daughters. Felicia Wilt gave Schools report and Bettie Gustafson gave Ancestor Plaques report. Donna Lindblad, first-time attendee, along with Kathleen dejonge, and Felicia Wilt served as pages. The Memorial Service has been changed to Saturday morning at the hotel. None of the ladies stayed for the Sunday tea.

11 HERMITAGE SPRING OUTING The annual Spring Outing was May 17 at the Hermitage. There were 700 guests. It was a sold-out event and the weather was gorgeous. Linda Tripp and Felicia Wilt attended from the chapter. The guest speaker was Former First Lady, Laura Bush. Mrs. Bush began her speech with a brief history of Andrew Jackson. Jackson enlsited in the American Revolution at the age of 13. He served as a courier delivering messages. He was captured in 1781 and held captive for weeks. When a British officer ordered him to polish his boots, he refused. After refusing, the officer slashed his hand with a sword leaving a permanent scar. He never shyed away from a fight. At the age of 41, Charles Dickinson called him in a worthless scoundrel and a coward. Jackson challenged him to a duel. He was shot in the chest an inch from his heart. His shot on Dickinson was fatal. By the time he was elected President, he had two bullets lodged in his body. In 1824, he lost the Presidency. He ran again in 1828 and won. He was re-elected in He was the first to veto legislation based on principle. He rejected a road bill that only benefitted one region of the country. He succeeded in making the office of Presidency as powerful as the Congress. He completed the North Portico and redecorated many rooms including the East Room. His Magnolias still bloom today. She had china designed with a magnolia. Mrs. Bush spoke on her family. Her in-laws are in Maine for the summer and doing well. She told that Mrs. Barbara Bush at age 91 walked on the beach in May. Two years ago, she walked with a walker. Last year, she couldn t walk at all. So she drove her golf cart around. All you have is now. Take advantage of your life every chance you get and walk on the beach when you can. Mr. Bush is quite the artist. He has painted 98 wounded warriors. His paintings, along with stories that he wrote about them is in a book titled Portraits of Courage. They portraits are on display at SCU in Dallas. Come tour the Bush Center and have lunch at Café 43. They have 2 grandchildren. Mrs. Bush talked about living in the White House during She made fun of tabloid stories during the presidency. As First Lady she chose Readin as her cause. She spoke about children. She believes that every child deserves a proper education and a safe and healthy childhood. Literacy is an essential foundation of a democracy. Books have the power to move people not only as individual but to shape our nation. If every child is educated, our country and our world will be more stable and prosperous. She talked about teaching in an inner city school. The community was filled with poverity and there were starving kids that only ate what the school provided for them. There are children here in the US that lack food, shelter, love, and safety. We can see those needs in our own community. Mrs. Laura Bush left us with some powerful thoughts. Truly a great speech.
