Congratulations are in order to our 2008 Nominating Committee for a job well done. The Nominating Committee consisted of past Chapter Presidents: Donald C. McGraw, Paul M. Wilke, John E. 2 The final Membership Report has been sent to the State Treasurer, Jim Fast, as per his deadline for all Chapters. If you received a membership card for 2008, you are in good standing. The membership cards mailed out were a receipt that your dues were received. Compatriots who have not remitted their 2008 dues must send $47. and a $5. re-instatement fee to Harry Geimeier, 454 General Drive, Ft. Wright, KY to stay on active status. Harry can also be contacted at hgeimeier@fuse.net or Congratulations are also in order to our Chapter Registrar, George McCain for the number of new applications he processed in George received nine approved applications, with 12 pending, and six prospective members finalizing their paperwork. This is remarkable growth for a Chapter with 160 Compatriots. George requests that every Compatriot continue their research and send in those Supplemental applications. We also thank Al Good for his years of service, as our Naturalization Chairman. Unfortunately, Al will not be able to continue with this valuable service to our organization, due to health concerns. Al presented SAR bookmarks and congratulations, to several hundred new citizens, at ceremonies held in downtown Cincinnati throughout the year. Geimeier, President 2008 AMERICA S HISTORY IS IMPORTANT Planning for the future without knowledge of the past is like planting fallen tree leaves in the ground and hoping for the best. Today s generation of American youth by-and-large is not literate about the history of our country, and this is not good for America s future. We can t, however, entirely blame our youth for their lack of understanding and awareness of American history. Parents, teachers and writers need to communicate to each generation that Americans, individually and collectively, cannot actually know who we are, or where we are going, unless we know where we ve been. We must value what our forefathers, including also our own parents and grandparents, have done for us; otherwise our history will simply disappear. The next generation must be told the greatest truth of history that no past event was preordained. A fact that is not as self-evident as it might sound, particularly to a young person, is that nothing occurs in a vacuum. We would do well to remind young people that Washington, Adams, and Jefferson lived in their time, just as we do today, every bit as uncertain of their future as we are. We each have been affected, changed, shaped, helped, and hindered by others. Family, teachers, friends, rivals, and competitors have all shaped us. So, too, have the Rembrandts, Beethovens, Shakespeares, and Emersons who lived long before any of us. 2

3 The hard work of others stretching back far into the past is represented by the laws that govern Americans, the freedoms we enjoy, and the institutions we unfortunately take for granted. How can we claim indifference to learning about those who made it possible for us to become citizens of the world's greatest country? Our freedoms are not just a birthright, but something for which millions before us have struggled, suffered, and died. The writers and 42 signers of the Declaration of Independence were not perfect humans; each had flaws, failings, and weaknesses; they were a Congress of men acting freely. Thomas Jefferson was only 33, John Hancock 39, Edward Rutledge 26, Benjamin Rush 30, Samuel Chase 35, and John Adams 40 years old at the time. The fact that these imperfect men rose up and performed as they did testifies to their humanity. Americans in those days were defined not by their failings, weaknesses, and sins, but by their ability to rise to the occasion and exhibit their character. It is impossible to comprehend the behavior of these forefathers without knowing why honor mattered so much that they put their lives and fortunes on the line for it. Our founding fathers had no experience in revolution or making a nation. George Washington was only 43 years old when he accepted command of the continental army in These men winged it, without money and lacking a navy or substantial army, for eight years. Their country of 13 colonies with 2.5 million people, including a half million slaves, and at least that many people who were loyal to the enemy, clung to a fringe of settlement along the east coast. They had no bank and only one bridge stood between New York and Boston. Practically no nation in the world knows when and how it was born with the detail that Americans have available to them. We need history teachers who have the heart and humanity necessary to help students imagine the lives of people who have lived in the past and were just as human as we are today. Students need to read history because it breaks down the dividers between the disciplines of science, medicine, philosophy, art, and music, which is all part of the human story. History enables us to understand the interconnections. We hear talk today about the difficult, dangerous times in which we live. Our nation has lived through darker times. The year 1776 was perhaps the darkest time in America's history. Or what about very early in 1942 after Pearl Harbor when German U-boats sank our oil tankers in plain sight off the coasts of New Jersey and Florida? Our military recruits drilled with wooden rifles. Our air force didn't exist and our navy was badly hurt. The Nazi regime looked like it was unstoppable. History is not just a subject that needs to be taught because it will make us better citizens, although it will. The joy of history, like art or music or literature, consists of an expansion of the experience of being alive. And that is what education is largely about.
