1 Greetings from the Branch Governor It has been an honor to be your Governor. Pilgrim s Progress Virginia Branch, National Society, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims Vol. XX, No. 1 February, Paul Walden Editor We have won many awards and have risen to the top of all that we have done with grace and dignity. You have much to be proud of as a State Society. We have had delightful meetings and enjoyed the company for our fellow members. Our Speakers have been memorable. G. Scott Walker gave each of us hard bound books, unlike most speakers that are there to sell them. As The President of the Fredericksburg Foundation, he opened up the Lewis Store on a Sunday and gave us a tour after his lecture at our meeting. We have commemorated this with a $250 donation to the Fredericksburg Foundation and an inscribed brick on their sidewalk. The talent of our membership is remarkable, filled with leaders and teachers, authors and historians. We honor our flag and give them out at parades and meetings. Our membership is now 90. We have not forgotten to give back to the community, to honor our War Veterans and contribute to the National Society. We have given $500 to the Yellow Ribbon Fund for Veterans, $281 to The Governor Generals Project to store our Records in DC, pounds of food to our Outreach Program. We bring can goods to each meeting. Please try to double this for my last meeting as your Governor on March 5 th at Fiona s, 5810 Kingstowne Center #160, Alexandria, VA (Order off of the menu.) Please save this date. I thank all of the Executive Board for the exemplary job that they have done. I also thank all of the outstanding members for the support that they have given me and the Virginia State Society. You are truly as miraculous as your ancestors and will be remembered for the good that you have achieved and the spirit which has produced this noble VA Branch. 2 Fall Branch Meeting-October 16, 2016 Bavarian Chef, Fredericksburg, VA We had a wonderful turnout at our fall meeting with 25 in attendance at one of our favorite meeting places, the Bavarian Chef in Fredericksburg. Our speaker was G. Scott Walker, President of the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation. After the luncheon, Mr. Walker conducted a tour of the historic Lewis Store in Fredericksburg, which dates to 1749, and is where George Washington once shopped. Fall Branch Meeting Attendees Guest Speaker, G. Scott Walker, and Virginia Branch Governor Virginia Rouse Virginia Branch Governor Virginia Rouse conducts the meeting General Court The 109 th General Court will be held on April 17, 2017 at the University Club in Washington, DC. 5 Our Pilgrim Ancestors Thomas Catlin Submitted by Natalie Schwoyer Ardoline Thomas Catlin, was born ca1600 in Leyburn, England. He was first mentioned in Connecticut records as a chimney viewer ( ); surveyor of highways (1655); townsmen (1659) and constable ( ). His first wife, Mary, died some time before His second wife Mary Elmore (or Elmer) was born in 1607 and died 1677 and was killed in the King Philip s War by the local Indians. Mr. Catlin had three children. The first Mary died soon after her birth in The second Mary was born May 6, 1649 and married Joseph Churchill. A son, John Catlin was born about 1640 in England. He received property in what is now Connecticut by deed of gift from his father, Thomas Catlin. John Catlin married Mary Marshall, daughter of Captain Samuel Marshall, on July 27, Thomas Catlin lived in Connecticut from 1640 to 1690 when he died. Matthew Howard Submitted by Paul Walden Matthew Howard, my 9 th great-grandfather, was born in 1609 in England and married Ann Hall. He arrived in Lower Norfolk County in the Virginia Colony in In 1638, he was granted 150 acres of land by Charles I. He moved to Maryland around 1650 and died there intestate in Although some speculate he left Virginia for religious reasons, it is believed that he remained a follower of the Church of England, as evidenced by his descendants being part of the first congregation of St. Ann s Parish in Annapolis when it was founded in In 1650, he patented a 650 acre tract on the Severn River called Howard s Hollow. His descendants were leaders in the early history of Maryland. His son, my 8 th great-grandfather, Cornelius Howard was Captain in the Maryland Militia and represented Anne Arundel County from in the General Assembly meeting in the colonial capital in St. Mary s City. He built a house called Mulberry Hill in what is now Davidsonville, Maryland and was still standing in 1978 when it was inventoried by the Maryland Historic Site Trust. Mulberry Hill, circa
6 Robert Booth Submitted by Benjamin Rudisill Robert Booth lived in York County, Virginia. He was the clerk of York County from 1640 to He was in 1652 elected to represent York County in the House of Burgesses and served until He died intestate in 1657 leaving a widow Frances who was born in Robert Booth's library consisted of 300 volumes valued at 14 pounds sterling. He also left 23 thousand bricks valued at 184 shillings. Robert and Frances had 4 known children: Elizabeth Booth married Dr. Patrick Napier, Ann Booth born 1647 (my blood line) married first Thomas Dennett and second William Clopton. Their son Robert Booth married Anne Bray and their last child Eleanor Booth. Steve Livengood Guest Speaker at March 2017 Meeting Steve Livengood was fascinated by the U.S. Capitol building even before he left his native Kansas and started volunteering in his Congressman s office as a college freshman in He began to learn about the building by giving tours to the visitors from his home district. After earning a B.A. in political science at the American University in Washington DC, and after experiencing the risks of good citizenship in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, Mr. Livengood became a Ph.D. candidate in Recent U.S. History at Emory University in Atlanta. His subsequent career has been as an association executive and public affairs consultant. In 1998, Mr. Livengood capped five years as an active volunteer tour guide in the U.S. Capitol by becoming coordinator of the volunteer programs of the United States Capitol Historical Society. He is now Chief Guide for the Historical Society. He leads VIP and specialized tours of the Capitol, trains staff guides and Society volunteers, and organizes promotional activities for Society programs. His children all claim Nathaniel Foot as their ancestor, which qualifies them for The VA Branch NSSDP. 6
