Rinesmith Color Guard Cmdr.: Chris Johnson President s Message As we begin a new year I would like to offer encouragement to all our members to participate in our upcoming events. The SAR does many worthwhile things in addition to remembering our ancestors and their sacrifice and service to our country. Honoring them goes a lot further than having a certificate. Our events bring great people together in a fun and informative enviorment. At our last activity, our Christmas dinner, we had fifty five people together at the Louisville Boat Club for a great and joyous evening during the Christmas season. We welcomed and presented a rosette to two of our newest members, Jesse Morton Decker III and William Abell Rawlings. Not in attendance but also new members are William Abell Rawlings Jr. and Robert Becker Rawlngs. Our speaker was compatriot Geoff Baggett, President of the state SAR. I wish all of our members could have witnessed and heard his message. It was very inspirational. He came in full uniform and presented a vision of what Christmas was like during the Revolutionary War. His talk made us all proud of our ancestors and gave us an awareness of their courage, conviction, and sacrifice for our country. Just a great experience to hear him. Our next event will be our Washington's birthday luncheon at Owl Creek Country Club on Saturday, February 16th. We will have a special treat as a speaker, Steve Vest, editor of The Kentucky Monthly. By reputation Steve's talks are filled with humor, great Kentucky stories and history. Again, I am really encouraging your participation. It will be a great and fun way to break up a cold and dark winter. More details will be forthcoming. As you know, we have placed great emphasis on adding new members. This would include sons and family members of current compatriots. These efforts have paid off and a great example is the Hendrix family from Mt. Sterling. Six of them have been recently approved. The grandfather, three sons, and two grandsons, and a daughter completing an application for the DAR. What a great family bonding experience!! And we have others in our chapter whose sons are applying for membership. It is great to order a lot of rosettes! Again, please consider attending our luncheon on February 16th to support the SAR, our chapter, and your ancestors. Look forward to seeing you. Jim Jackson

After dinner, Goeff Baggett, the Kentucky State Sar President, pastor, and author presented a very enthusiastic talk on The Tale of Two Revolutionary Christmases to remind us that the Christmas we have today was not always as joyful and merry in the past. Huffman, Sr. Memorial Photographic Award This award was created and funded annually by Douglas and Alison Collins as a memorial to John H. Huffman, Sr. ( ). John was a 10-year SAR member and former President of the Louisville-Thruston Chapter ( ). His dedication to ensuring chapter events were documented through his photography was a priority for him. The annual award of $100 shall recognize and reward the Kentucky Society Compatriot (primary or dual member) whose photographic entry is selected as the most representative of patriotism. An SAR certificate, appropriately embossed, shall accompany the cash award. Entries are to be no greater than 8½ x 11 in size, unmatted and unframed, and may be in color or black-andwhite. Hi-resolution digital copies of photographs may be requested to facilitate judging and publication of the winning photograph. Only one entry per compatriot will be accepted. Entries are to be sent no later than February 28 of each calendar year to: Hard copies to: Douglas Collins 7004 Shallow Lake Road Prospect, KY Digital copies to: aliedoug@twc.com Judges shall be selected from a pool of candidates including, but not limited to: SAR Magazine Editor, professional photographer, KYSSAR Newsletter Editor, KYSSAR Chapter Newsletter Editor(s). Judges will reach their decision in whatever manner they deem appropriate, so long as only one picture is selected as the winner. Announcement of the winner and presentation of the check and certificate will occur at the KYSSAR Annual Meeting held in March of each year. The winning entry will be submitted to the SAR Magazine Editor, who will be requested to run a reproduction of the winning photo each year in the issue of the SAR Magazine. All entries become the property of the Kentucky Society Sons of the American Revolution and will not be returned. The third annual award will be presented in 2019 at the KYSSAR Annual Meeting.

6 Washington Birthday Luncheon 2019 Fellow Compatriots, The Louisville Thruston Chapter's next meeting is the Washington's Birthday Luncheon on Saturday, February 16th, 2019 at Owl Creek Country Club. The featured speaker is Stephen M. Vest, he is the editor and publisher of Kentucky Monthly magazine, which won the Governor s Award in the Arts (Media) (2005). Mr. Vest is also editor of SAR Magazine, the National Society Sons of the American Revolution s quarterly. A frequent speaker, Vest is an adjunct professor at Campbellsville University. He and his wife, Kay, reside in Frankfort. They have four children. Mr. Vest s stories will strike a chord of warm familiarity with readers who will recognize a little bit of their own families, and maybe a little bit of themselves. Also on the program, we will hear from the winners of the chapter s SAR Youth Awards Contests the Knight Essay Contest and the Eagle Scout Essay Contest. Make your reservations now, and join us as we celebrate the 287th anniversary of George Washington's birth. Return the reservation portion of this announcement with your check to Treasurer J. B.
