PASTOR S PAGE FOR FEBRUARY 2015 FEBRUARY is the last full month of winter. We are hoping for good weather nevertheless. Let s see what is in store: Sunday, Feb. 1, is Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday. We will celebrate the Super Bowl at both churches by giving $1 or a can of soup to a local food ministry. Please help out the poor in our area. Salem Church also will be serving coffee and cookies after church. Please join us for the fellowship! Enjoy the game in the evening! However, the Confirmation Class is meeting at Salem Church at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, is Christ Church Consistory meeting at 7:30 p.m. Pastor Mark will hold a worship service in the Friendly Home at 10:00 a.m. It is also Ground Hog Day! Shoot him, if he sees his shadow. Thursday, Feb. 5, is Salem Consistory meeting at 7:00 p.m. Please note the time change. Saturday, Feb. 7, is the SWEETHEART BANQUET at Salem Church at 5:00 p.m. The meal is a choice between pork or filled chicken breast. We had to raise the price of the tickets last year. The tickets cost $13 each or 2 for $25. We will sell around 100 tickets again this year. When they are gone, they are gone. So, get your tickets ASAP. Marilyn Headdings, Carol Snyder, Butch Heim, and Pastor Mark should have tickets. Our special music is MENDED HEART. This is a new version of THE PARADISE QUARTET, who sang last year, and they were essentially the old BLACK CREEK QUARTET, a group from the Pine Grove area. You will not be disappointed! 1

2 Sunday, Feb. 8 is Holy Communion at Salem Church. Please prepare yourselves to receive the Holy Sacrament. Tuesday, Feb. 10, the Tri-Valley Ministerium is meeting at Salem Church around 1:00 p.m. If you see activity at the church, that is what is going on. Saturday, Feb. 14 is Valentine s Day! Have a good one! Sunday, February 15, is Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday of the season of Epiphany. This is the deadline for the March LIFELINE. Please have all your information to Rose Novinger by this date. Monday, February 16, Pastor Mark is having hip replacement surgery. Please contact Pastor Todd Wolfe if you have a pastoral emergency. His phone # is He will be on call until the end of the month. We will have to play it by ear how long the pastor will need rehab. Please, stay posted in the bulletin and do not hesitate to call the parsonage. Wednesday, February 18, is Ash Wednesday. There will be a special service at Christ Church at 7:30 p.m. Randy Wehry Sr. and Randy Wehry, Jr. will be doing the service and special music. Friday, Feb. 20, there will be a SWEET TREAT program at Christ Church at 6:00 p.m. Ice Cream will be served in the Adult Sunday School area. In honor of George Washington, there will also be cherry based desserts. This is our fourth year to run this program. Please come, bring something if possible, and join the fun! Sunday, February 22, is the First Sunday in Lent. We have Randy Wehry, Jr. lined up to preach at both churches. Wednesday, February 25, there will be a Lenten Service at Salem Church at 7:30 p.m. Our special speaker will be announced. Until next time, macht s gut un behaft dich! Pastor Mark PARISH FACTS TRANSFERS: Dean and Sandy Schreck transferred to Salem Church from Christ Church on Sunday, December 28, Welcome to your new church home! FUNERAL: Nealla Flosie Paul Rothermel Phillips, age 97, passed away on December 30, She was a member of Himmel's Church. On January 3, a funeral with interment was held at Himmel's Church with Pastor Mark Rothermel and Pastor Jane Compton officiating. Our deepest sympathies to her family and friends! CHRISTMAS SEASON A BIG THANK YOU to Salem Church for hosting a beautiful Christmas Eve Service. The Sunday School Program was also wonderful this year again. Christ Church had a delightful mini Children's Program as well. Thank you to all who helped! Thanks to all the people at both churches who helped to decorate the churches and to take down the decorations as well! 2

HARBAUGH'S CORNER FEBRUARY 2 is Ground Hog's Day. It is PA German in origin, and so has become sort of a PA German Pride Day. Our ancestors in Germany always watched the native badgers to see if winter would be short or long. When they came to Pennsylvania, they started watching the ground hog. In some localities, the ground hog is called a Dax (literally badger). For Ground Hog day, I am quoting a John Birmelin poem recorded by Earl C.
