PASTOR S PAGE FOR JANUARY 2019 The New Year is here already. Best wishes in 2019 for you and your family! Let s see what is happening in our church: Tuesday, January 1, Happy New Year! Enjoy the sauerkraut!!! Thursday, January 3, Pastors' Prayer Meeting at Salem, 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 5, Meet and Greet with Pastoral Candidate. Times will be announced! Sunday, January 6, is the Day of Epiphany. Salem Church will have its Church Service at 9:00 a.m. and its Sunday School at 10:15 a.m. There is NO CHANGE from last year. There will be a trial sermon by a Pastoral Candidate with a vote immediately after the service. Please come and listen. The Confirmation Class will remain on vacation on this date. Pastor Mark will have the day off. Monday, January 7, Salem Sunday School Teachers and Officers will meet to plan the new year at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, is the Salem Consistory Meeting at 7:00 p.m. We will need to elect new officers of the Consistory. Wednesday, January 9, is the annual Elders Meeting. It is held at Salem Church at 7:00 p.m. The goal of this meeting is to plan the annual church calendar of events. Anyone is welcome to attend. If you cannot attend, please feel free to suggest ideas to the Pastor or one of the other elders. Thursday, January 10, Pastor Mark will preach at the Polk Foundation, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, is the First Sunday after Epiphany, and we will observe COMMUNION SUNDAY. Please start the new year right as we all prepare ourselves to receive the Holy Sacrament! We are also planning to start our Bible Study in the evening. Please stay posted in the bulletin for details. 1

2 Tuesday, Jan. 15, is the deadline for the February RUMBLINGS. Please have all your information to Rose Novinger by this date. Friday, January 18, is the deadline for all reports due for the Congregational Meeting. Please begin your reports as early as possible. If you can type them, that will be a big help. However, typing is not required. Please do get your reports in on time to our church secretary, Rose Novinger. Sunday, Jan.20, is the Second Sunday after Epiphany. This is also Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Sunday, Jan. 27, is the Third Sunday after Epiphany. It is the Congregational Meeting for Salem Church. There will be a flip in service times for this Sunday only. Sunday School will at 9:15 a.m. and worship will be at 10:30 a.m. Salem will have a Congregational Dinner immediately after the church service. Please bring a covered dish, salad, and/or dessert. The church will provide the meat, and vegetables, and drinks. When we are finished eating, we will have our business session. LOOKING AHEAD: The annual Sweetheart Banquet will be held at Salem on February 9 at 5:30 p.m. We are serving ham and chicken. Tickets will go on sale at the church this month, but price is still to be determined. We will be selling only about 100 tickets, but we would like to sell them all. The meal will be prepared by the Kitchen Committee. Please get your tickets ASAP. Our special music is MENDED HEARTS. Until next time, macht s gut un behaft dich! PASTOR'S ACTIVITIES FOR NOVEMBER 5 Worship services, including 1 off site, 2 Choir practices, 4 Bible Studies, 1 funeral, 1 counseling session, 1 nursing home visit with 5 people seen, 2 trips related to the Church Bazaar, 3 trips related to the Don Sunshine Ministries event, 19 home visits, 5 home communions, 4 hospital visits with 5 seen, 9 miscellaneous meetings. HARBAUGH'S CORNER JANUARY is the time for new things. This month, we are looking at a Schuylkill Co. poet's work. His name is Oscar Moyer from Summit Station. He wrote a poem entitled THE FARMER that was published about this time of year. We will look at portions of it taken from Earl C. Haag's DIE PENNSYLVAANISCH DEITSCHE, Volume 2, page 172.
