P A T R I O T S D A Y By ROBERT T. NASH, Andrew Jackson Chapter The Tennessee Society celebrated the anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 18 with a banquet at the Maxwell House. About sixty members of the organization were present. Following the banquet, Miss Mary Appleby read Longfellow s poem, The Ride of Paul Revere. Ninety five years later, the Tennessee Society celebrated Patriots Day on the afternoon of April 19 at the grave of Andrew Jackson. Tennessee is the fourth state to recognize Patriots Day due to the efforts of Compatriot Douglas Carpenter, a member of the Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter. Massachusetts, Maine and Wisconsin already do. Members of the Col. Benjamin Cleveland, Lt. Andrew Crockett, Andrew Jackson, Christopher Strong, Sumner and Valentine Sevier chapters joined in these ceremonies along with other members of the Tennessee Society. The Pre-emptors, a drum and fife corps sponsored by the Crockett Chapter accompanied the ceremony. The composite Color Guard and placement of a wreath on Andrew Jackson grave are shown in the accompanying photos. 2 THE PREEMPTORS (l to r): Director Joseph Smyth III of Lt. 5 S P I R I T O F 7 6 D R. T H O M A S W I L L I S Only a few years ago, several people gathered at White Plains, the home of Tom and Martha Willis, ancestral home of Lt. William P. Quarles and his family, just outside of Cookeville. Their mission? To consider forming a SAR chapter. After a thorough discussion of the work ahead, Willis, Gordon Jackson and several others agreed to undertake the task. Since that time, the Chapter has been recognized for its growth, and in 2008 received the Stallworth Award, for the highest percentage of growth in the Tennessee Society SAR. Dr. Tom Willis is Professor of Curriculum and Instruction-Special Education at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. According to his secretary Nancy, "he never has a bad day." He is very well respected by both the staff and students. The enthusiasm and spirit that he brings to SAR is a direct carry over from his everyday life. Out of 14 new applications that have been submitted and approved for the Quarles Chapter, Tom has been the sponsor of seven. He is also the co-chair of our ROTC/JROTC Program and has been involved with the presentation of Tech s ROTC Silver Medal for the past two years. Lt. William P. Quarles Chapter, Cookeville Lt. W. P. Quarles Chapter President Gordon D. Jackson presents a Meritorious Service Medal to Tom Willis. On June 7, Tom Willis was awarded by the Chapter the Meritorious Service Medal for the significant impact he has had on the formation of this new Chapter. He brought with him that spirit of "what can I do to help" and "let's get things done" according to President Gordon Jackson, and it is his leadership and encouragement that has made the Lt. W. P. Quarles Chapter SAR a success! His obligation to the memory of his ancestor was evidenced by his involvement in the SAR. EDITORS NOTE: As in the land of OZ, behind the curtain in every Chapter there are Compatriots whose participation and leadership add aura to their Chapter and to SAR. Usually serving without office, these Compatriots make contributions to the Chapter and to the SAR that are so worthwhile that a Chapter s identity is often shaped by their contributions. This is the sixth in a series of articles that highlights the valuable men and women across Tennessee who possess the Spirit of 76 - Compatriots who step forward and do the job that needs to be done, just because they can. Please submit your Chapter s nomination to the editor. The editor will contact you to develop a story for inclusion in a future edition of The Tennessee Patriot. 10 P R E S E R V A T I O N John Echerd s nostalgic journey The week of April 13, 2009, I made a nostalgic trip to my home state of North Carolina. In my trusty pick-up truck loaded with cement, tools and granite grave markers, I set out to honor my Revolutionary War ancestors and to mark the grave which had not been previously marked. I have identified nine RW ancestors (so far) and know of the graves of seven of them, six of which are within 20 miles of where I grew up. Four of these are in St. John s Lutheran Church Cemetery at Conover, North Carolina. I had an appointment to speak at the John Hoyle DAR Chapter on the subject of "Ramsour's Mill, so I took my tools and granite grave markers and with the help of the church Boy Scout Troop #312, we placed four granite markers. I then went to Vashti in adjoining Alexander County and placed a granite marker on the grave of James Stevenson, my ancestor who fought at Ramsour's Mill, Kings Mountain, Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown. I met with my 93 year old sister and together we went to meet our older sister to celebrate her 95th birthday. Needless to say, I was somewhat fatigued, but had done something I had wanted to do for a long time. I was able to practice what I have preached for a long time. Take time to MARK YOUR RW ANCESTORS GRAVES. 16 What July 4th Means to Me July 4th to me is more than a BBQ or a hotdog plate shared by families. July 4th is more than a show of fireworks in a city park or even grander yet, a fireworks display along a riverbank. July 4th is more than a politco giving a political speech to many. I hearken to an old-fashioned time with American Flags and American Fanions gracing a parade route in front of many hundreds where service men and service women and veterans from the many wars come marching by dressed in full regalia with medals and ribbons adorning. I hearken to a beautiful white Victorian gazebo in a large city park surrounded by many ancient trees and shrubs where people listen intently (and by the way, standing up because in Victorian times it was considered rude to sit down) to individuals talk on what patriotism means to them. I hearken to a gathering of military veterans where respectful little boys listen with open ears about battles lost and battles won. I hearken to a time when people sang all four stanzas of THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER and not just the first stanza because individuals back then knew them by rote. I hearken to when grade school boys and girls would be given patriotic poems to memorize so they could be recited in their respective class. And finally, I hearken to those great and much admired leaders who knowingly signed their death warrants on a document, but not just any document, a far reaching very important paper that veritably shouted to the world that the fledgling thirteen colonies declared themselves to be free and independent of the British Crown (action of Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia). This is what July 4th means to me, not only as a compatriot, and not only as a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, but also as a son of one who offered his life for his country by flying twenty-five missions as a navigator on a B-17 dropping bombs over Germany during World War II where only one in four made it home. The B-17 where my dad was navigator was the second most shot up plane during the war. It endured many, many bullet holes and several cannon holes where a volley ball could easily be pushed through. It barely made it back to England. And for this he came away a highly decorated soldier and was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. BY Maury E. Miller III, President, Christopher Strong Chapter, Charlotte The Tennessee Patriot Tennessee Society SAR 376 Sims Lane Franklin, Tennessee PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID Nashville, TN Permit No. 380 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Tennessee Society TENNESSEE SOCIETY SAR MISSION Perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men who achieved the independence of the American people in the belief that these stories are universal ones of man's eternal struggle against tyranny, relevant to all time, and will inspire and strengthen each succeeding generation as it too is called upon to defend our freedoms on the battlefield and in our public institutions, including the stories of those brave men and women who came to this Tennessee wilderness with little more than their raw grit and determination and proceeded to claw out a gracious society of which WE are the recipients.
