Page 2 April 2014 TENNESSEE PATRIOT Claude T. Hardison, Jr. President, Tennessee Society SAR Claude Hardison was born in the Old Dominion State of Virginia and raised on the coast of Virginia and for a while, on Knott's Island, North Carolina. After his first year of high school his family moved to Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from David Glasgow Farragut High School as Senior Class President, with a scholarship to attend teachers college at Illinois State Normal. Between his junior and senior year, Claude joined the U.S. Army Reserves. Upon graduation from high school, he completed his military active duty requirement, then returned home to reserve status. Claude attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and then returned to Chicago. Claude married Helen C. (Alonzo) Hardison 52 years ago. They are proud of their two sons, two daughters, and 11 grandchildren. Both sons and three of his grandsons are members of Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter SAR. In Chicago, Claude worked at Western Electric Hawthorne Works in Industrial Engineering. He graduated with a B.S. from Illinois Institute of Technology. He then worked in Industrial Management with Keebler company as a Production Manager in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While there, he attended Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and obtained a MBA. Evidently his Keebler magic wand worked, as he was promoted as the youngest Keebler Production Superintendent, for the startup of the Keebler Bakery in Atlanta, Georgia. When M&M/Mars Confectionary Company established a production facility in Cleveland, Tennessee, Claude joined the startup group for the plant, and later was promoted to Technical Services Director and Corporate Team Member, for Baked Products. He retired from M&M/Mars in Claude is a Past President of the Grand Rapids, Michigan Industrial Management Club and past member and officer of the Quality Council of Michigan and Georgia. He is a past 3rd Degree Council Financial Secretary and the 4th Degree Faithful Comptroller of the Trinity Assembly, Knights of Columbus, Cleveland, Tennessee. He is a member of the M&M/Mars Associates Retiree Group, member of the SCV Nathan Bedford Forrest, Camp #3, Chattanooga, the Overmountain Victory Trail Association, and Officer in the Windcrest Homeowners Association. He is a member of the First Families of North Carolina and applying for membership in the War of 1812 Society. Claude became a Charter Member of the Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter in He held several positions in the Chapter and became chapter president in He is a dual chapter member of the John Sevier Chapter, State of Franklin Chapter and Honorary dual member of the Hiwassee Chapter. He was elected Tennessee Society SAR Secretary in the administrations of TNSSAR Presidents William L. Eubank III and Rick D. Hollis, after which he served as the TNSSAR East Vice President, TNSSAR Vice President, and as Presidentelect. Claude has regularly attended the NSSAR Leadership/Trustee Meetings, in Louisville, Kentucky and several National Congresses. He serves on several National Committees, including Americanism, Medals and Awards, Education and Patriotic Outreach. Claude T. Hardison, Jr. For his service to our Society, Claude has been awarded a Military Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters for State and District, both the Bronze and Silver Color Guard Medals, Bronze Good Citizenship Medal, Liberty Medal, George Washington Bicentennial Medal, and a 10 years service award pin. Claude is a Fellow of the George Washington Endowment Fund and is a donor to the Center for Advancing America's Heritage (CAAH) and Friends of the SAR Library. Claude has discovered and honored three Patriots, Captain Michael Koonce, Alexander Blackshear and a rare female patriot, the wife of Captain Koonce, Mrs. Elizabeth Koonce. As a novice genealogy researcher, he is currently establishing a Hardison and Taylor line to his list of Patriotic ancestors. Although Claude joined the Army before he undertook researching his family's genealogy, he can claim cousin relationships to U.S. Navy Admiral Frank B. Kelso and Rear Admiral Osborne B. Hardison. Claude says that some of his most enjoyable activities in the SAR are dressing in his Colonial period dress, in honor of his Patriotic ancestor, Captain Michael Koonce, who served during the Revolutionary War in the Jones County, North Carolina Militia, and attending various Color Guard events and activities in Tennessee and at other locations with fellow SAR compatriots. His most honored moments occurred this past summer while touring Virginia and the homes of four US Presidents. He stood before the grave vault of President and General George Washington, the gravesites of President Thomas Jefferson and President James Madison and rendered unto them the honor of a mourning salute. Claude T. Hardison, Jr.

Our obligation to our forefathers April 2014 Page 3 The World came to Knoxville in 1982, and in 2017, the Tennessee Society SAR will host the National Society Sons of the American Revolution at Good Ole Rocky Top! Several years in planning, NSSAR s Board of Trustees approved Tennessee as 2017 Host Society in September Members of the Congress Planning Committee toured locations and hotels across the state in 2013, and recently requested that the Tennessee Society make its choice. At the 2014 Annual Meeting, Host Society Planning Committee Chair Rick Hollis presented three hotels and three cities: Holiday Inn World s Fair Knoxville, Embassy Suites Nashville SE Murfreesboro, and Marriott Cool Springs Franklin. Following the presentation and discussion, the members attending the TNSSAR Annual Meeting voted unanimously to select Knoxville. Essential to Knoxville s selection was the recent decision by the Knoxville City Council to construct covered walkways between the Covered walkway between Holiday Inn and Knoxville Convention Center Covered walkway connecting Hilton Hotel with UTK Conference Center and Knoxville Convention Center Knoxville Convention Center and the two nearest hotels, Holiday Inn World s Fair (across street) and Hilton Knoxville Downtown (one block). Meetings will be held in the Holiday Inn World s Fair and the Youth Luncheon and two formal banquets will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center. The hotel, situated between the Main Campus of the University of Tennessee and Downtown Knoxville, is two blocks from historic Market Square which is filled with restaurants and entertainment venues. Three blocks away, the East Tennessee Historical Society operates an impressive Museum and hosts one of the finest genealogical research libraries in the South. WILL YOU HELP? Our financial obligation as Host Society is to plan, execute and fund the Opening Host Reception. We are committed to hosting this Congress without a membership dues increase or tapping into our reserve funds. Based on actual costs at recent Congresses, we project a total budget of $25,000 to fund the reception, entertainment, supplies and incidentals throughout the duration of the Congress. Naturally, we want to have an impressive event. Our costs will be less than most recent Congresses because we are planning a Southern BBQ. But, since Tennessee is the Music Capital of the World, we anticipate showcasing top-notch entertainment at the reception and during the Congress. The President s Pledge program is underway. Donations of $250, $500, $750 and $1,000 (or more) are gladly accepted and as a donor at these levels, special recognitions will be given for your support. We have pledges of more than $7,000, with a goal of $10,000 from the pledge program. Please consider your special donation today. Additionally, Congress lapel pins (shown above) may be purchased at $7 for one or $10 for two. A special Congress Medal will be approved and available by year-end. And Compatriot Joe Chambers of Kings Mountain Chapter has donated a top-quality Revolutionary War era styled rifle to be raffled. Whatever level of your participation, it will be graciously appreciated. Be part of this great event! In preparation, members donated funds to install several trees, shrubs, flagpoles. The wrought iron fence needs to be painted. It was last painted about eight years ago when President Roy Miles ( ) led a group to reinstall sections of the fence that had been dismantled. The volunteers cleaned the cemetery and repainted the fence. Well, it is time to paint the fence again, so we plan to schedule another day this year for a half-dozen volunteers to spend 3 or 4 hours to re-paint the fence. 24% CAAH Donors Murfreesboro s Lytle Cemetery/Patriots Park - An Update Concerns that Lytle Cemetery would be destroyed by construction of the long-awaited new bridge project on Broad Street, at one of the busiest intersections in Tennessee are unfounded. The projected two-year construction project began recently with relocation of utilities. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) illustration above demonstrates that the roadway is a safe distance from the cemetery. As previously reported, cemetery access remains unchanged and the new road expansion will have little or no impact on the cemetery. EDITORIAL COMMENT: Captain William Lytle gave the tract of land upon which the original part of Murfreesboro is located. His vision was for a city to be built there, in view of the place where he chose to be buried. One has to believe that he would be proud of the foresight of Mayor Tommy Bragg and other city and county leaders that has enabled Murfreesboro to become one of the state s principal cities. It has been a distinct privilege to serve as Editor of THE TENNESSEE PATRIOT newsletter. An assignment I anticipated would last a couple of years has extended to eight years. I have been honored to also serve the Society as State Secretary ( ), Presidentelect ( ), President ( ), Alternate National Trustee ( ) and National Trustee ( ) in addition to serving as Secretary of the Southern District SAR ( ; ). Two new responsibilities will replace the time spent working on the newsletter. I am quite proud to have received the unanimous endorsement of the Tennessee Society Board of Governors, who then advanced my name to the Southern District SAR nominating committee as our state s recommendation to serve as the Vice President General of the Southern District. Subsequently, the Leading the Way Forward, my favorite photo with the TNSSAR Color Guard District Nominating Committee, comprised of the Presidents of the Chapter s events has caused green-eyed envy across the state. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee societies, accepted Now, he will be able to trumpet all of the good works of the the recommendation and unanimously nominated me to be the Tennessee Society SAR. David Davis has my full and unqualified support! And, I am Host Society Planning Committee Chair for the 2017 National Society SAR Congress scheduled for Knoxville in July Leadership of this project is a significant responsibility, but I am fortunate to have some of the state s most accomplished members as part of the team. Our goal is to make the Knoxville Congress enjoyable and unforgettable. Compatriot Davis will introduce himself in the next issue. Be assured, he is eminently qualified. David is a newspaper man who retired recently as Managing Editor of one of the state s larger daily newspapers, the Cleveland Daily Banner. Over the past few years, his newspaper s coverage of the Col. Benjamin Cleveland I look forward to my new roles and as always, there will be times when I may need to call on you for help. Every member of SAR is an important part of our team and I am gratified that every time I have called on any member for help, it was forthcoming. I value the special relationship I have with the members of the Tennessee Society SAR and recognize that our rapport exists because I have gotten to know so many of you personally over the past decade. Serving as Editor of THE TENNESSEE PATRIOT newsletter since 2006 has been deeply rewarding, but eight years is long enough...it is Thank you for your friendship, thank you for your support, and time for fresh ideas, a new approach. More than a year ago thank you for your willingness to serve our Society...our Society President Colin Wakefield and then-president-elect Claude whose Mission honors our Patriot ancestors who fought for Hardison were informed they should begin a search for my Liberty, endured unimaginable mental and physical suffering, and replacement as Editor. Fortunately, Compatriot David Davis, of gained Independence for the American People. Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter, recently accepted this new role. God bless the Sons of the American Revolution. God bless America! Patriotically, DR. DEBBIE DUAY S GENEALOGY WORKSHOP Impressive, excellent and amazing are just a few words used by attendees of Dr. Duay s Genealogy Workshop at the TNSSAR Annual Meeting. Attended by more than 100 SAR and DAR members, she shared her secret tips about finding genealogical proofs for Revolutionary War ancestors. Use her special website for links:

Page 6 April 2014 TENNESSEE PATRIOT BY John C. Wakefield, Kings Mountain Chapter HOW TO PLAN PROGRAMS FOR YOUR SAR MEETINGS Scheduling programs for a year s worth of SAR meetings can be an arduous task. I don t pretend to be an ace at it, but I have learned a few things about the process. And I offer some suggestions to anyone charged with this task. Priorities: First, determine priorities. While we may want all of our programs to be on an aspect of the American Revolution, that focus is not always available. We may not live near Revolutionary War sites, with resource persons at such sites. Resource persons to speak on some aspect of the American Revolution may not be as plentiful in the west as they are in the east. They surely are not as plentiful in East Tennessee as they would be in Williamsburg, Virginia. Why set priorities? They set what is really important to SAR, and what is not. They need to be consistent with the goals to which we pledge ourselves: historic goals of honoring the people and events of the American Revolution, patriotic goals of inspiring the American community to affirm founding principles, and maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, and educational goals to teach values of patriotism and affirm others who do. A system of priorities of programs in SAR meetings might be as follows: programs related to the American Revolutionary War programs related to early American history programs related to the military current or historic programs related to area history programs of local civic interest It is wise to periodically consult your list of priorities to assure that you are being true to them, and to assure that your programs represent a good balance of priorities. Resources: Where do we find programs, and especially speakers? Contact personnel at local historic sites, archives, and genealogical groups. Consult people who schedule speakers for other patriotic organizations. Trade program lists with these organizations. Often the potential speaker will suggest a topic on which he/she has some expertise. Sometimes you will find it appropriate to suggest a topic. Speakers bureau lists are another good resource. Consult such lists through the local Chamber of Commerce or institutions of higher education. Consider asking history teachers in schools. Or check with military personnel, and especially ROTC personnel. Sometimes the local SAR chapter can generate its own speaker resources. Your chapter has within its ranks potential speakers. Not every member, however, is a speaker; and this circumstance calls for discretion on the part of the person arranging programs. Speakers can come from among participants in chapter-sponsored events: poster contests, oration contests, or the Knight Essay Contest. Recipients of SAR awards are another resource: Eagle Scout Scholarship, History Teacher Award or ROTC Awards. Questionnaire: To assure that your programs run as smoothly as possible secure as much information as possible, and communicate as much information as possible before the date of your program. The following Questionnaire / Information Sheet might assure that your programs run smoothly. A sample Questionnaire / Information Sheet might look like the following: KINGS MOUNTAIN CHAPTER SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION JOHNSON CITY, TENNESSEE QUESTIONNAIRE / INFORMATION SHEET Thanks for your willingness to present a program to the Kings Mountain Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, October 17. We meet the second Thursday of the month, in a private dining room at the rear of Peerless Restaurant, 2531 N. Roan Street, Johnson City. The Peerless Restaurant is off from the street, on the west side, near I-26 exits 20A or 20B. It has a large parking lot in front of the building. You may want to ask the hostess for directions to the dining room where SAR is meeting. You are scheduled to speak on Tipton Haynes State Historic Site: Colonial America in our Own Neighborhood. While this program is a matter of public service, and does not carry a stipend, your dinner is provided. Please arrive by 5:40 if you need to set up for your presentation. Immediately following dinner, a brief business meeting will take place at 6:30, and you will be introduced and speak following the business meeting. Please speak for twenty to twenty-five minutes, followed by five to ten minutes for response and questions. Please strictly observe these time parameters; our members are told what the length of programs will be, and we need to keep our word to them.

Our obligation to our forefathers April 2014 Page 7 Please also respond to the questions below so we can accommodate your presentation. We need two-weeks notice if you require the equipment listed under number two. Thanks very much for your willingness to speak. We are looking forward to hearing you. Will you need a table? Two or three? Do you need for us to supply a video projector, screen, computer? Will you come in any sort of period costume? Will you bring any handouts? If so, please bring twenty-five copies. What other equipment will you bring? What may we say to introduce you? Current career title? Professional experience? Pertinent personal information? Education? Publications? Other? Please also provide a one paragraph description of your presentation which can also be used in our introduction of you. Cordially, John C. Wakefield, Vice-President Kings Mountain Chapter SAR jcwakefield@milligan.edu (home) (cell) A Final Schedule: I recommend setting all of your programs at the beginning of the year. It s a better policy for you, your chapter members, and your speakers. Why is it a better policy? You have finished the toughest part of the task, so you can usually relax for the year. Also a complete list of the year s programs, distributed to the members, puts their minds at ease about the year and contributes to the stability of the enterprise. Your members like to see what s ahead. Some of them who might otherwise have skipped a meeting might come if the topic and speaker seems of interest to them. So what happens when you lose a speaker later in the year? Consult speakers scheduled for later months. Inquire about their availability to fill in. If one of them can come, then you have bought a little time to find another speaker for that later month. If you can t move a speaker up in the year, have an ace-in-the-hole ready: someone within the chapter who could be ready to speak. Don t default on a program. Check Back with Your Speaker: Contact the speaker about two weeks prior to his/her speaking date. Review the basic information with the person: date, time, title of the talk, and material you will provide. If you don t receive an response, call the person. The Night of the Program: Arrive before your speaker. Be evident so that you, who have already communicated with this person, are the first person the speaker encounters. Explain the location of their presentation, assist them with set-up, introduce the speaker to the chapter president, and sit with the speaker during dinner. Be his/her host for the evening. At the time of the program, introduce the speaker to the membership. A word about the most difficult, but one of the most important aspects of your job: keeping the program to its allotted time. Why is it so important? Your fellow-members count on the program lasting only its announced length; they have other plans for their lives. Furthermore, they are less apt to continue to attend meetings if they experience programs that go on and on and on. Assuring that the program does not go beyond its announced and requested length is a tough call. I don t know any better way to do it but to look the speaker straight in the eye, smile very cordially, and say, Now please understand. If it seems that the program is going to extend beyond the announced length, you can count on me to stand when you grab a breath, thank you for the program, and call for a brief time of questions. I ll do it with a smile, but I ll do it! The Follow-Up: After your speaker has provided a program to your SAR chapter, communicate your appreciation. Do not stretch the truth. If the presentation was no better than average, simply express your gratitude that they came. Closing Out: You can actually derive some joy from scheduling programs for your SAR chapter. You will encounter many people who are eager to help. You will increase your knowledge of the resources available in your area. And you will garner a few kudos from your fellow SAR members, who appreciate what you ve done. But do it thoroughly and well. You ll be glad you did and so will your fellow SAR members. EDITOR S NOTE: We appreciate Compatriot John Wakefield s initiative to volunteer to prepare and share this guide for planning a meeting schedule. We hope chapters will find it useful as they plan their meetings for the year.

(Dick) Spencer DSPEN47@aol.com TENNESSEE SOCIETY SAR MISSION Perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men and women who achieved the independence of the American people in the belief that these stories are universal ones of man's eternal struggle against tyranny, relevant to all time, and will inspire and strengthen each succeeding generation as it too is called upon to defend our freedoms on the battlefield and in our public institutions, including the stories of those brave men and women who came to this Tennessee wilderness with little more than their raw grit and determination and proceeded to claw out a gracious society of which WE are the recipients. Becoming a Member of SAR has two (2) basic requirements as provided in the NSSAR Constitution and By-Laws: 1. Eligibility for Membership 2. Lineal Descent from a Patriot with Acceptable Service A. A list of SAR Chapters in each State is listed on this Web-site, and an applicant may contact an officer of a Chapter near his home. B. Each State has a member who is designated as the New Member Helper. In most States, this is the State Registrar and he will direct an applicant to a Chapter where the applicant lives, or the nearest Chapter, and forward the inquiry to that Chapter. The Chapter will be responsible for assisting prospective members with the application process. Please consult State Genealogist Richard T.
