2 Page 2 Winter 2014 TENNESSEE PATRIOT Compatriots, Somewhere near the beginning of my tenure as TNSSAR State President someone had stated that the year would go by quickly and indeed it has! It has truly been an honor to have served as your TNSSAR State President for and I am grateful to all of you for your encouragement and support during my term. We have a lot to be proud of in our great Tennessee Society as we continue to perpetuate the memory and ideals of our Patriot ancestors. Our work continues as we move forward into our next year and I know that even greater things lie ahead for our Tennessee Society. We must all remember that despite our differences we are all held together by a common bond: a reaffirmation of our faith in the principles of liberty and our constitutional republic. I remember at the beginning of my term handing out to my officers a small sheet of Colin D. Wakefield President, Tennessee Society SAR paper. On that small sheet of paper were a few words that I thought might best represent my philosophy on leadership and achieving excellence within our Tennessee Society. The author is unknown. I ve had a copy of it on my desk for many years now and I still refer to it on occasion. I found the following words encouraging to me as the challenges of the year progressed, all the while striving for excellence within myself and within our great Tennessee Society: Excellence can be attained if you Care more than others think is wise, Risk more than others think is safe, Dream more than others think is practical, Expect more than others think is possible. In closing I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement during this year. I can t say enough about how proud I am of our entire TNSSAR! What a great year we have had in 2013 and I expect no less as we roll on through 2014! Mark your calendars now for March 28 th and 29 th as those are the dates for our 2014 TNSSAR Annual Meeting to be Colin D. Wakefield held at the Cool Springs Marriott in Franklin, TN. This will be our Tennessee Society s 125 th Annual Meeting and it is shaping up to be a great one! Again, my sincere thanks to all of our Compatriots for making 2013 such a resounding success and let us all reaffirm our commitment to our Great Tennessee Society and to each other in continuing to work together to make our Tennessee Society the best that it can be! VALENTINE SEVIER COMPATRIOTS RING IN THE NEW YEAR (l to r): Don Horton, Bob Parker, Wayne Long, Cleo Hogan, Lee O. Buddy Hunter, Jim Marshall and Rick Hollis. Several members of the Valentine Sevier Chapter surprised Compatriot Buddy Hunter with a visit on New Years Eve to ring in the New Year. Hunter, who is 86, was an active member of the Color Guard until about three years ago and even participated in the last Southern District meeting held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana four years ago. Always jolly with a fun story to tell, the group enjoyed their visit very much. HENRY PUCKETT AND SONS JOIN COL. Willie Blount Chapter 1812 A Monument Dedication honoring the lives and military service of Revolutionary War Captain James Hollis, Sr. and his son, War of 1812 Private Isaac Hollis was held at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery near Clarksville, Tennessee on September 7, The Hollis family lived in close proximity to the Cemetery during the late 1700s and through the 1800s. John M. Hollis, son of Isaac Hollis, is identified in records as a Trustee of Mt. Carmel Methodist Episcopal Church in Montgomery County, as early as October 20, James Hollis, Sr. was a member of Col. John Donelson s Flotilla that brought the first women and children to what is now Nashville and he was an original settler of Renfroe s Red River Station at Fort Union, Montgomery County s first settlement, established April 12, He was the first signer of the petition initiative on September 5, 1788 to organize Tennessee County. Isaac Hollis was the third signer, and a handwriting analysis of the signers indicates he probably penned the document. James Hollis, Sr. established a mill at present-day Thomasville in Later, he established a mill on Hollis Mill Creek in southern Robertson County. He defended against Indian attacks at Renfroe s Station in early July 1780, and was a survivor of the Battle Creek Massacre in late July Prior to his arrival in what is now Middle Tennessee, Hollis lived at Watauga and fought in the first battle following our Declaration of Independence. The Battle at Long Island Flats, fought on July 20, 1776, was the first battle against Dragging Canoe and other British allied Indians on the Western front. His home was used as the meeting place for the Sullivan County Quarterly Court from The historic home, built by Captain Hollis in 1779, was rescued from destruction and restored by Sullivan County historic preservationist Rann Vaulx in Isaac Hollis lived on property adjacent to the Church site in the late 1790s, then, nearby on Half Pone Creek until his death. After the Massacre at Fort Mims on August 30, 1813, Isaac Hollis was among the first Volunteers to be inducted into the Army during the Muster at Camp Blount, in Fayetteville. He fought under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Talladega, among other actions, October-December Supporting Hollis and Parker are Color Guard members (l to r): TNSSAR Commander Roger A. General Society War of 1812 Assistant Judge Adjutant General Cleo G. Hogan served as Master of Ceremonies and Valentine Sevier Chapter President John C. Head laid a wreath at the monuments. TNSSAR President Colin D. Wakefield and TN 1812 President David L. Eagan dedicated the monuments. The joint SAR and 1812 outing included a Black-powder shoot and a BBQ chicken dinner. Jim Thweatt narrated a special 13- fold Flag Ceremony, performed by Charlie Scott and Tom Higgins of Kentucky. At the close of the ceremony, Charlie Scott presented Rick Hollis with a memorial flag and Tom Higgins presented a memorial flag to Bobby Parker. Both were deeply honored. Tennessee Sons of the American Revolution French Lick Company presented the Colors at the Grave Marking for Revolutionary War Patriot Pvt. John Allison Jr. in Ditty, Tennessee, outside of Cookeville. The William P. Quarles Chapter hosted the grave marking ceremony which included a Salute of Arms. It is always and Honor to Remember these Patriots. LT. ANDREW CROCKETT CHAPTER SAR HONORS PATRIOT GEORGE NEELY IN FRANKLIN The French Lick Company Color Guard presented the Colors for Revolutionary War Patriot George Neely in Franklin. This event was hosted by the Lt. Andrew Crockett Chapter. Color Guard Members Fred Ryan, David Vaughn and Frank Schafer along with David Eagan, Allen Poteete, Bert Chalfant and State President Colin Wakefield commanded by State Commander Roger Tenney.

Representative Brooks delivered the keynote address. CLARKSVILLE REST HAVEN CEMETERY Valentine Sevier Chapter members were joined by members of the Captain William Edmiston Chapter DAR and Sevier Station Society CAR. At right, members of the Valentine Sevier Chapter paused to remember former TNSSAR Color Guard Commander James Hurst by placing a wreath at his grave at Clarksville Rest Haven Cemetery. Anthony Bledsoe Chapter member David Miles Vaughn of Gallatin was featured on a new TV series called "Genealogy Roadshow", a new series on PBS. His spot was on the series premier that was filmed in Nashville. The show will also include programs from Austin, San Francisco and Detroit. The popular show, Who do You Think You Are features famous Americans and connects them to early Americans, with occasional extensions into their European, African or Asian roots. This new show, Genealogy Roadshow, will tell stories by exploring the past of ordinary people and will find their connections with famous Americans. The show examines Vaughn's connections to David Crockett. Bledsoe s Fort Colonial Days, Castilian Springs Col. Anthony Bledsoe Chapter Sons of the American Revolution had a booth at the Bledsoe's Fort Colonial Days this weekend in Castilian Springs. The annual event has proven effective as a tool to educate the public about the Revolutionary War era and to recruit new members. Col. Anthony Bledsoe Chapter hosts Grave Marking Ceremony for Revolutionary War Patriot Jesse Maxey The Col. Anthony Bledsoe Chapter hosted a Grave Marking for Revolutionary War Patriot Jesse Maxey. It was held in Gallatin at the Douglass Cemetery off of Upper Station Camp Road, at the home of Rodney Durham. Compatriot Larry McClanahan was the host with Compatriot John Tidwell leading the opening prayer and Compatriot Dennis Harris leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The French Lick Color Guard presented the colors. The Guest speaker was Nolan Maxie of Texas who is a Direct Descendant of Jesse Maxey. According to Color Guard Commander David Vaughn, It did rain on us some, but it was a Great Event and our Chapter is proud to be able to do this Grave Marking. 9 Our obligation to our forefathers Winter 2014 Page 9 PATRIOTS McCONNELL, HOPE AND DUFF HONORED BY SAR AND DAR The John Sevier chapter, TNSSAR of Chattanooga, along with the General William Chapter, VASSAR, of Abingdon, Virginia gathered with the Nancy Ward chapter NSDAR of Chattanooga and the Ketoctin Chapter of the NSDAR of Bluemont VA, gathered at the Green Springs Presbyterian Church in Abingdon, Virginia to honor patriots of the Revolutionary War. Abingdon is steeped in the history of the growth of our country and the Green Springs Church is a resting place for many of the participants. Those honored were Adam Hope, his wife Agnes Kinkaid and their son Private James Hope. Abram McConnell and his wife Rosanna Fryatt, Private Samuel Duff, Jr. and his father Samuel Duff Sr. were also recognized. Tim Adams President of the John Sevier Chapter, David McConnell Host and John The SAR chapters placed granite markers at the graves. The Sevier Member, Chad Henderson John Sevier Member, Charles Dammann TN past president and John Sevier Member. Nancy Ward chapter placed DAR Insignia markers on the graves of Patriot Adam Hope, his wife Agnes Kincaid and Rosanna Fryatt McConnell. Rosanna was the wife of Patriot Abram McConnell and daughter of Patriot Bartholomew Fryatt. The three privates served at the Battle of Kings Mountain and mustered at Sycamore Shoals near Elizabethton, Tennessee. Adam Hope was an overseer of roads and helped supply the militia. Samuel Duff Sr. was a juror in Washington Co., Virginia. Bartholomew Fryatt signed the Oath of Allegiance to the cause of the colonist. As part of the marking ceremony, members of the Overmountain Men Honor Guard from the General William Campbell Chapter fired a musket salute. Of special significance, one of the guns fired in the salute was built in 1776 and had seen service in the battle of Kings Mountain in Biographies of the individuals were read by their descendants. David S. McConnell of the John Sevier Chapter, Amy McConnell of the Ketocin Chapter and Guy T. McConnell of the General William Campbell Chapter. A reception followed hosted by the women of the Green Springs Church. The Church has held continual services since founded in 1796 and is the final resting place of many who fought for our Nations freedom. The markers that were placed by the SAR and DAR chapters serve to preserve the memory of the sacrifices of those patriots and their families. In the future they will serve to help educate the descendants of todays SAR about our history. John Sevier Home, Marble Springs State Historic Site, Recognized for Display of American Flag A certificate of Commemoration recognizing exemplary display of the American Flag at the Marble Springs State Historic Site was presented to Anna Chappelle, Site Director by Compatriot Carl Leonard representing the Stephen Holston Chapter of the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution. The Commendation was presented at the Annual meeting of the Governor John Sevier Memorial Association held at Marble Springs in Knoxville Tennessee June 15 th, Marble Springs was the country farmstead of General John Sevier, hero of Kings Mountain, General of the Militia and first Governor of Tennessee. Marble Springs was built circa 1790 upon a land grant provided to John Sevier for his service in the Revolutionary War. Marble Springs is open to the public.
