August 2015 By SK Jim Werner The month of July is over and it was busy! Whew! The following is a brief review of the month s meetings, activities, events, and/or projects. Both the Officer s Meeting (7/1) and Business Meeting (7/8) were well attended. Thank you for your dedication and efficiency in handling current Council 9993 business. The Mid-Year Audit has been completed (7/28) and turned over to Tom Lobato and me. The State Organizational Meeting (7/1) was interesting, educational, and very fast paced. This meeting will be followed by a district planning meeting during which Kevin Stipak will clarify and disseminate more information on topics discussed at the state level meeting. At the meeting, two Knights from the Denver area proposed a Knights of Columbus SOS. The SOS requests councils to be prayer warriors in the abortion battle. (For more information see KOC SOS article in this newsletter.) On July 18, I was honored to be with Nathan Mang on a very special day. Along with 41 other Knights, he received his 2nd and 3 rd degrees in Aurora. Congratulations to you, Nathan! While Nathan and I were in Aurora, several Knights from our council attended the William and Jean Zint Memorial Mass at St. Patrick. Along with the 4 th Degree Honor Guard, they honorably represented our council. As usual, our pancake breakfast (7/12) was a success thanks to Greer Baily and his crew. They always do a great job. Shortly after the crew arrives, the pans are flying, the eggs are cracking, the sausage is sizzling, and a delicious breakfast is served. Thank you Greer and crew! The Chapter Meeting (7/20) at St. Mary s was well attended. In addition to reports and typical agenda items, main topics of discussion included the purchase of a canopy for the Bishop s outdoor ceremonials and this year s Coats for Kids project. In response to a need targeted last year, Supreme has found a source for toddler sized coats. All Knights are encouraged to identify families needing support in providing coats for their children. Please provide that information to Doug Anderson or me and we will follow-up. The weather cooperated during this year s Sky Sox Tailgating and Game event (7/21). The rain quit when the set-up crew arrived with the grill and meats. Thank you to the ladies who provided delicious side dishes and thank you to Matt Dodds for the great job he did in planning this annual event. Everyone had a good time. The only thing missing was a Sky Sox win! The School Supply Drive went well. School supplies donated were taken to Catholic Charities to distribute to children needing them. Thank you for your generosity. August is stacking up to be another busy month. In addition to our regular meetings, events include the monthly pancake breakfast on the 2 nd, District Planning Meeting on the 11 th, and the Father McGivney Memorial Mass on the 19 th. Christ s Blessings, SK Jim Wermers GK Brother Knights, if you have changes to your home address, phone number or address, please Paul Miller, Financial Secretary, at paul-jr@themillers.com or call (leave a message if no answer)

Baby Parts for Sale!!? Culture of Life by Ron Krom In the news Planned Parenthood accused of illegally selling body parts from aborted babies. Undercover video from the Center for Medical Progress showed gruesome aspects of the bloody trade, from haggling over prices to the sorting of parts from dismembered fetuses. In one video, a former procurement technician tells what it was like to sort through a dismembered fetus to collect the desired tissue samples. It was so gruesome that she passed out the first time. These videos are available on Just search on Center for Medical Progress or Human Capital. As you can imagine, PP officials say the videos are misleading and inflammatory. Shock, denials, and finger pointing. Is this some new evil visited upon us? Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life says that no he has been fighting against this practice and trying to inform the public for 15 years. These latest videos show that harvesting and selling illegal aborted baby parts has been sanctioned at the highest levels of Planned Parenthood. Since this is against both state and federal law, one might think all the media would rise up, the public would demand an investigation, and that justice would demand arrest and trial of the violators. We ll see about that. The problem is this. Abortion is nasty business. Nasty big profitable business. Nice people, good Christians, oppose abortion but don t want to engage in dialog about the unpleasantness. They don t want to look at aborted babies or stand in front of Planned Parenthood, or risk disapproval by friends or neighbors. Politicians just want all the fuss to go away so they can work on their own agenda. Prosecutors and district attorneys would prefer not to dig into controversial or unpopular cases. Liberal media side with Planned Parenthood, so don t expect to see investigative reporters at major networks digging into this. After all, how long did it take before the shocking murder of baby Aurora Wilkins in Longmont faded from the news, and nothing was done to protect unborn victims of violence. The latest article in the July 30 th Gazette says that PP has asked government scientists to convene a panel of experts to study the issues around providing fetal tissue for research. What they have done illegally, they would like scientists to declare something good and desirable. Talk about a conflict of interest! Imagine every pregnant woman who walks into PP would be seen as a source of fetal tissue. Would the woman s welfare come first? So if you want justice if you think something should be done it is up to you to do it. Everyone has a voice. Use it to inform your family, friends, and neighbors. Use it to protest to lawmakers and elected officials. When did you last write or call your Congressional representative? It may feel like going up against Goliath, but remember this: David was on God s side and David beat Goliath! Ask your representatives to stop the $500 million Planned Parenthood gets from federal and state funds. Air Force Parking Brother Rod Schumann has graciously volunteered to head up the Air Force Parking Program for As you all know, Air Force parking has been a huge money raiser for us over the years and enables us to fund our charitable donations. Rod is very active in our council and has worked the Air Force parking for a number of years. He will be taking over for Frank Peck and Herman Jasper who both did a tremendous job the last number of years. Thank you, Rod, for stepping up to head this very important program of Council Grand Knight SK Jim Wermers Air Force 2015 Schedule Sept 5 1:30pm Morgan St Sept 12 San Jose St Oct 10 Oct 24 TBA-Fresno St Nov 7 TBA-Army Nov 14 TBA- Utah St The entire editing staff of this newsletter would like to thank SK Ron Krom for his service in faithfully reviewing this newsletter and ensuring that errors are kept to a minimum. 3 Matt Dodds Knight of the Month July 2015 The Brothers of St. Patrick Council 9993 recognize Brother Matt A. Dodds for his service to the membership. He chaired the July 21 Sky Sox 2 $ Tuesday and Tailgate. There was a great turnout and all had a fun time. Also in July Brother Matt finished his first month as an elected officer (Council Chancellor) for the year. Brother Matt joined the order via Council #9993 in December, 2000, and advanced to the third degree in October, At that time he was actively serving in the U S Air Force and was subject to reassignments. While assigned at Vandenberg Air Force Base in CA he served two terms as Financial Secretary with his Council there. He retired from the Air Force in 2005 with 20 years of service and returned to Colorado Springs with his wife, Kimberly, and son. They are married for 27 years. Matt and his son assist with the Council s Monthly Pancake Breakfast. Thank you, Matt, for your years of service and fellowship as a Knight of Columbus. Thanks also for 20 years of service to our nation while in the U. S. Air Force. Back to School Drive By Ron Krom In mid-june, we got a sudden request from the K of C Guadalupe Chapter. The Chapter includes all the K of C Councils in the Colorado Springs Diocese. The request was for a school supply drive, sponsored by Bishop Sheridan and the K of C, that was to be completed the weekend of July 25 th and 26 th. The late announcement required quick action to coordinate with St. Patrick Parish Staff and fit the event into a full parish schedule. With an OK from Father Larry and the Parish Council, and with help from Mary Ann Lamecker and Marie Baughman, fliers were placed in the bulletin and the event announced at weekend Masses. We placed collection boxes at the weekend Masses on two weekends, and parishioners responded very generously. 26 boxes and bags of supplies completely filled Jim Wermers truck, and were delivered to Catholic Charities for distribution. We can only hope that other parishes responded as generously. Many thanks to all who helped make this drive possible, and especially to those who opened their hearts and wallets to give!

Ladies Auxiliary Korner By Fran Krom August 2015 The Ladies Auxiliary will resume meetings in September. In the meantime, we enjoy summer activities with friends and family. The weather cooperated for a very pleasant outing at the Sky Sox game. The food was abundant, as usual, and the seats at the game afforded great views of all the action. The coming fall months will be busy as we support our Knights in events and take on projects of our own. In the meantime, many of you are traveling this summer and we wish you good times and pray for safe travels. September will be our first Bake Sale of the season. Ladies Start Your Ovens!!! I will have details ready for you next month. The next meeting for the Ladies Auxiliary is September 23 rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Bonzel Hall. The Ladies will provide refreshments for all following the meeting. Let us protect Christ in our lives, so that we can protect others, so that we can protect creation. Pope Francis Short and Sweet!! An Update on King Soopers Gift Cards Herman Jasper Gift Card Coordinator In the four week period ended on July 11 the reloads of our K of C Gift Cards totaled $11,620 and our 5% rebate is $ paid to us by check. Again, thanks to each of you that have participated. If you are now using a card, employ the best advertising of all Word of Mouth! Get an extra card from me and sell it to a family member or friend or perhaps two or three. If you are not now carrying and using a card, look at it again. If you are spending just $50.00 per month with King Soopers or Loaf and Jug for food and fuel, this can be $30.00 per year income to benefit our charitable efforts. Perhaps it is time to pass the torch on this project to someone with new ideas (and a different set of contacts to approach) Please consider being our Council Gift Card Coordinator. 6 USAFA Football Parking Fun Fraternity Fundraising For several years our Council has assisted with parking at all home USAFA football games. We began this as a fundraiser, but over time fun and fraternity elements have moved to the front. If you are new to the council, or aren t familiar wih the ativity, here s the story. We assist in directing traffic into the stadium parking lot. We begin four hours before kickoff with some of us remaining until an hour or two after the game is over to assist fans in departing. Between the kickoff and the end of the game we have limited or no duty. This is when we fire up a grill and have a tailgate fraternity and great (usually) food. There is not much finer than enjoying food and fellowship with brother Knights on a beautiful fall afternoon. We are paid by the hour for the time we assist (including the time between kickoff-including tailgate time-and the exit time except for those on early release) at over $13.00 per hour. The earnings are deposited into our Council checking account. Each participant must apply and become employed by E-9 Security (the Athletic Department s contractor). Not a difficult thing to do and we can help you through the process. We hope that those who have helped in the past will again be available this year, and we would like to pick up some new volunteers/employees. You can work or assist with as many or as few of the six home games as you wish or are available. You select your dates two to three weeks ahead of game date. Some have worked one game and others have worked every game. This is not good duty for those that have feet, legs, or backs that don t like periods of standing. This past year we earned $ to suport our charitable efforts that inlcuded Home Front Cares, Habitat for Humanity, our St. Patrick Youth Group mission trip, and St. Mary s High School Scholarship Fund. Great causes, right?? This is the 2015 USAFA Home Football schedule as it stands today: Herman Jasper Point of Contact Sat. Sep 5 Morgan State Kickoff TBA Sat Oct 24 Fresno State Kickoff TBA Sat. Sep 12 San Jose State Kickoff 8:15 pm MT Sat Nov 7 Army Kickoff TBA Sat Oct 10 Wyoming Kickoff TBA Sat Nov 14 Utah State Kickoff TBA Each game is a Saturday game! The point of contact for this is Rod Schumann. You may contact him at rodshu62@gmail.com1 or Safe Environment Training If you work with youth in any capacity, you are required by the Diocese of Colorado Springs to take a Safe Environment Training class. This is regardless of what ministry or activity you are involved in Scouting, K of C, Altar Servers, Religious Education, etc. This is only offered a few times during the year, and is a painless way to learn how to protect yourself, as well as how to protect our youth. If you have previously taken the class, you only need the 2015/2016 Update Training. There are 3 trainings scheduled this month: August 19 from 6-8pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Hall, 1830 S. Corona Ave; August 24 from 6-8pm at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bonnie Fitzpatrick Hall; September 10 from 6:30-8:30pm at St. Mark Catholic Church, Highlands Ranch. Please RSVP to Irene Knudsen at IKnudsen@stpatscs.org or (call or text) if you will be attending one of the trainings or if you have questions regarding the training. All are welcome to attend this very informative training. Update training dates will be announced later. Knights who work with youth are also required to take the K of C Safe Environment Training as well as the diocesan training. For more info on that, contact Ron Krom or Jim Wermers. VJ, Ron Krom

Fourth Degree Report by Ron Krom July was a busy month for the 4 th Degree. There were quite a few Honor Guards requested for funerals, Corporate Communion at St. Michael s in Calhan, Msgr. Jaeger s 25 th Anniversary, and the Memorial Mass for Bill and Jean Zint at St. Patrick. The Zint Memorial was in honor of Bill Zint, long-time member of Assembly 3049 and Council 9993, and his wife Jean. Bill was a past Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator at St. Patrick. Jean was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. 16 Sir Knights came out for an Honor Guard, a great show of respect to them and their family. Family received Certificates of Condolence from Council 9993 and Assembly Many other Knights not in regalia also attended. Tom Lovato and Mark Elio did Mass readings, Dave and Jennifer Hodge brought up the offertory gifts, and others acted as EMHC. Eight Sir Knights did the Honor Guard at Corporate Communion at St. Michael s. Since the main center aisle is narrow, we could only line up on one side of it, but it made a good show. One Sir Knight in tux, Mike Pfeifer, also did Mass readings, and Sir Knights also distributed communion as EMHC. The 4 th Degree was very well represented. Corporate Communion at St. Patrick is August 30 th at the 7:45 AM Mass. If you are a Sir Knight with regalia and are able, please help us make this a very special Mass. We only worship as a body a few times in a year, and a strong showing is a good sign to the congregation of a vibrant group of Knights in their midst. Besides, after Mass, all are invited to fellowship at breakfast at the Golden Corral on Woodmen. Feast on the Eucharist together, then feast on breakfast! What if you re a 4 th Degree Sir Knight and you don t have regalia? Don t let that stop you from participating. Here s how. First, if you have a tux, you can attend wearing that and your baldric. You will look sharp, and can still act as EMHC, reader, hospitality minister, gift bearer, etc. If you don t yet have a tux, you can get a sizable discount at Al s Formal Wear if you tell them you are with the K of C. They also have used rental tuxedos at affordable prices. If you want to get your regalia and participate in the Honor Guard, it is easy as pie. Just contact SK Jaime Santos to place an order. There s a small deposit and small monthly payment. Easy and painless. So, calling all Sir Knights. Don t be a wallflower. Be a Knight all the way. I think you will be glad you did! Front Row: Al Pfeifer standing in for Eric Mantz, Daniel Rolenc, Mark Elio, FN Jaime Santos, Rick Losey, Doug Ingalls. Back Row: Father Mike Butler, Michael Moore, Greg Schymanski, Roger Claman, Craig Seiler, District Marshall Mike Kavanaugh, Dwayne Butch Enderle, and Duane Krones

Fr. Mikes ponderings: Faithful Friar Mike s Reflection For the past few weeks we have been focusing from the Gospel of John the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fish. Even after the multitudes are fed there are plentiful leftovers. Yes, these events were miracles Jesus performed and they continue today. I came across a reflection by Alberto Casing on facebook. I believe his reflection explains what the multiplication of loaves and fish means today through us. And so it reads. Godspeed, Padre Mike When you find yourself in the position to help someone, be happy and feel blessed because God is answering that persons prayer through you. REMEMBER Our purpose on earth is not to get lost in the dark, but to be a light to others, so that they may find a way through us. Kitchen Safety Training For all those who help out with food preparation in K of C activities and other ministries, it is very important to practice food safety and to know safe use of all kitchen equipment. That will help eliminate food-borne illnesses and other injuries that can come from heat, sharp utensils, etc. The Kitchen Safety Team will be conducting safety training on the following dates: Wednesday, August 26th at 6:30 PM Wednesday, Sept. 2nd at 4 PM If you would like to attend one of these informational session, please contact team members Ron Krom, Tom Stevens, or Dave Henggeler to save you a spot. Quite a few of you have attended once before. Let us know if you would like to come for a refresher. VJ, Ron Krom
