3 Congratulations to Alex Gonzalez Februar y Knight of the Month Brother Alex Gonzalez joined the Order in June Brother Alex quickly progressed to the 3 rd Degree. For his faithful participation and contributions, Brother Alex is recognized as the Council 9993 February 2019 Knight of the Month. Brother Alex is currently an active participant in the Church s masses, pancake breakfasts, and other events. He s also a U.S. Army veteran. B r o t h e r A l e x enjoys spending t i m e w i t h h i s family, fishing, b i k e r i d i n g, c a m p i n g, a n d hiking. We are blessed for having Brother Alex in Council We thank him for his dedicated service in the military, Council, church, and community.we are blessed for having Brother Dave in Council We thank him for his dedicated service in the Military, Council, Church, and community activities. Congratulations to the Kasper Family Februar y Family of the Month Council 9993 is pleased to recognize the Kasper family as the Council's February Family of the Month. The Kasper family has been attending St. Patrick parish since 2005 and Deacon Matt since They have a blended family of a daughter two sons and six grandchildren. The children are all successful grown adults. The grandchildren range in age from 4 to 28 years old. Their daughter and family who live here are active members of St. Pats and their son-in-law is a fire fighter and a Knight. Deacon/Sir Knight Matt joined the Order in October 2016 and progressed to 3rd Degree Knight. He then quickly advanced to 4th Degree Knight with St. Patrick Assembly Deacon Matt says that he is more involved in Spirit and Prayer than he is in action. That is only due to his clerical responsibilities and his position as a Colorado Springs Fire Department Chaplain, at which last year alone he had over 1,250 volunteer hours. Deacon Matt has been a Deacon going on nine years and also retired from the United States Army after over 26 years of dedicated service as an Combat Engineer. His wife Martha is very active in the church and in her professional career was a school teacher and principal. Currently she is the ministry head of the RCIA program at St Pat's. Deacon Matt and Martha although being retired claim that they do not have as much time as t h e y w o u l d like to enjoy that status due to their many voluntary and f a m i l y activities and o b l i g a t i o n s. W h e n t i m e permits they d o e n j o y hiking (they back packed the El Camino De Santiago a m i l e pilgrimage across Spain), mountain biking, paddle boarding, Scuba diving, and traveling in their RV. In addition Matt is a car guy who likes to race his Vette, and enjoys skiing and four wheeling his jeep and of course grandchildren are always a delight. Deacon Matt says that "we are always busy and thankful for all the blessings and graces that our Lord has bestowed upon us. The support and prayers that we receive from the Knights Community are heartfelt, needed and appreciated". IN SERVICE TO ONE, IN SERVICE TO ALL Page 3 of 12

4 LIFE NEWS MARCH 2019 By Ron Krom, Life Director While I haven t been writing much in the newsletter lately, we have been working on the Life program. The revised Life area in our K of C programs covers many areas. Of course, the traditional respect for all human life from conception to natural death continues, as shown in March for Life, Ultrasound Program, Silver Rose Program, Pregnancy Center Support, and Novena for Life. It also covers caring for those with special needs, working to help Special Olympics athletes develop their potential through donations and volunteer hours. This category also includes the Mass for People with Special Needs and Christian Refugee Relief. You see, the Life category covers almost anything to do with respect for the right to life and the dignity of life. We can t work on all these programs at the same time, and we can t work on any without your participation. Alone, our efforts are worthy but weak compared to results obtained when we work together. This month we have two big Life goals, the Novena for Life, and 40 Days for Life. In a Feb.26 and at the Feb 27 council meeting, I introduced the K of C handout on the Novena for Repentance, Renewal and Rebuilding. This Novena is for the success of our bishops worldwide addressing the issue of sexual abuse within the Church. We need to pray for the healing of all those impacted by this problem victims, families, clergy, and Catholics in general. While we have already started the novena, it is okay and desirable to start now and pray the novena for 9 days. Not only will we be help make our Church a holier and safer place, but it helps our Council achieve a Life program goal. If you need a copy of the Novena, please contact me or check in the gathering space at St. Patrick. In the same vein, I was encouraged by an oped piece in the Tuesday Feb. 6 Gazette: AG investigates Catholic sex abuse. It was very encouraging the way that Colorado Catholic churches have worked to become safe harbors for kids, especially compared to other public institutions. For example, it quotes a 2004 investigation of public schools that said students are 100 times more likely to be abused in school than by a priest. Yes, we have had serious failures in the past, and we have made much progress. More remains to be done, and that is where prayer is important, as is keeping things in perspective. Remember that most media reports are not as fair as this Gazette editorial. Finally, when it comes to rights and safety, no issue is greater or more compelling than the right to live. As it stands right now, our lawmakers and courts do not guarantee that right to every person. By saying (incorrectly according to science) that the fetus is not a human being, it is made a non-person, a non-citizen, and vulnerable to capital punishment without committing a crime. Money is a major influence, as the abortion industry profits greatly from its grisly practice and also from federal and state funds for reproductive health. When women are empowered and educated, most will choose life for their child, even if they feel incapable of keeping and raising it. Through our participation in the 40 Days for Life program, from March 6 to April 14th, we cover the Planned Parenthood clinic and all who enter with prayer, witness, and offers of support. Prayer works when nothing else does. Bad law and bad court decisions don t change lives for the better. Prayer and love save babies and change hearts and minds. Please check out the web site at or install the smart phone app and see what you can do to change lives and save endangered children. I have left flyers at church or you can contact me for more information. The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart Jeremiah 1:4-5 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. Psalm 139:13 IN SERVICE TO ONE, IN SERVICE TO ALL Page 4 of 12

5 FAMILY COMMUNITY LIFE Current Programs: Food for Families, Family of the Month/Year Upcoming Program: Consecration of the Holy Family Current Program: Special Olympics Upcoming Program: Novena for Life Current Program: Helping Hands Upcoming Program: Habitat for Humanity Program Director Steve Smitty Smith Family of the Month/Year: We are beginning to look into either forming a committee or working with an existing parish committee that will nominate and choose families from the parish (Knight families and non Knight families). This will help get exposure for the Council in the parish in something other than food related and hopefully draw men from the parish to serve as a Knight. FAITH Current Programs: KIOSK, RSVP, Spiritual Reflection Program Upcoming Program: Program Director John Lopez vj1lopex@yahoo.com Spiritual Reflection Program On Mar 30, Council 9993 will be hosting a Spiritual Retreat at St. Patrick s Bonzel Hall. This retreat is open for any male parishioner or Knight. The objective to this retreat is for all participants to provide an opportunity to share their innermost spiritual beliefs and experience. Building the KIOSK This program is to help strengthen the domestic church by providing exceptional religious education materials to all Catholics. The Kiosk is located in the Bonzel room immediately to the right after the double doors and is available year-round. All materials are free and are replenished by our Worthy Grand Knight SK Jaime Santos as needed. RSVP - The purpose of the Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP) program is to keep faith alive by supporting our seminarians and postulants. The Knights of Columbus are committed to providing moral, financial and spiritual support to our future priests and religious at all stages of their formation. St. Patrick s Council 9993 currently supports two seminarians. We will be in constant contact with them for any support and prayer. On March 3, a poster for each seminarian was signed by parishioners to show their support and prayers. Program Director Ernie Rodriguez isexr1@pcisys.net Helping Hands - This program is designed to recognize the important work many councils already do to care for the most disadvantaged members of our communities. Through this program, councils will aid the needy through the activities they feel best suit their community. St. Patrick s Council 9993 is already active in this program by our Brother Knights helping out at the Marian Soup Kitchen on a weekly basis. In order to be more successful in this program, we are planning to schedule a day during the week when Council 9993 can participate. We are finalizing a specific date and will be asking for volunteers. Coats for Kids We also need a new lead director for this program. Please let your Grand Knight or Deputy Grand Knight know if interested. Program Director Ron Krom ron_krom@hotmail.com Special Olympics - The Knights of Columbus (KofC) has a unique partnership with Special Olympics and has helped disabled athletes train for and compete in games around the world. KofC councils have assisted with all aspects of the program from fundraising to feeding the athletes, organizing and judging events. On March 9, our Council we will be assisting the Special Olympics at their Annual Polar Plunge to be held at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. We will be responsible for beach/fire pit patrol around the lake. Show time is 0830; dress warm! Help is still needed for this event. Five Brother Knights are still needed. Please let WGK Ernie know if interested in volunteering. He may be reach via isexr1@pcisys.net or IN SERVICE TO ONE, IN SERVICE TO ALL Page 5 of 12

6 It s that time of year again! Lenten Fish Fry s and Station s of the Cross are back. This years dates are March 8 and March 22. If you can help, please let Steve Smitty Smith know ( ) or just sign up at the following link: go/30e0848a9ac22a2fb6-march It s a time of great camaraderie and mentorship. Please consider signing up to volunteer. Don t Get Behind! Stay Up-to-Date with Your Volunteer Hours Did you know that the Council website has a feature that will help you track your volunteer hours? Well it does! You can track hours you volunteer at church, hours spent helping out at your children s school, hours spent with Knight functions (even meetings), etc. You can track any amount of time you spend volunteering for any organization. By entering your volunteer hours, you help the Worthy Grand Knight in determining the total amount of time the Council spends on various Knights functions. Without entering your hours, the time spent is estimated. It is no doubt that the Knights of Council 9993 actually spend far more time than the time that is estimated. Help your Council shine with the volunteer hours and visits performed and enter your hours today! Thank you for your help! To enter hours: 1. Go to Council website 2. Click on Members Only link on left hand menu 3. Log into Members Only area 4. Click on Post Your Volunteer Hours and Visits button under RECORD YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS AND VISITS - NEW FEATURE section 5. Select/set the date of activity 6. Enter your activity and hours/minutes in the appropriate section 7. When set, click on the yellow button Submit All Entries 8. Double check your entries and when set, click on the yellow button Confirm All Entries at the bottom of the window 9. To make more entries, click the yellow button Make More Entries 10. Repeat steps 5-8 for all other volunteer hours and/ or visits you ve accomplished 11. Once all hours/visits are entered, click Close This Window Please contact a Council Officer with any questions. So be sure to spread the word to Brother Knights that don't have , so they can stay abreast with the Council! FINAL MONTH! Dues are Due! It is that time of year! Dues are due!
