1 November 2013 Brothers and Ladies: A highlight for October was the Parish Oktoberfest held on October 19 after Mass in the Bonzel Hall. Your worthy newsletter editor is including an article and pictures. You will see it was a very fun event. My thanks to the many Knights and Ladies that participated as volunteers to make it successful, and as participants to have a good time. Again, the four principles of our Order the reasons behind our being a Knight of Columbus! Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism As Knights, we should be sure that every Catholic man and his family have an opportunity to benefit from membership in the Knights of Columbus. Our Membership Chairman, Sir Charles Cote, developed information and recruiting program to extend this opportunity to everyone. This effort kicked off this Sat. and Sun, Nov 2 and 3. Knights will spoke briefly before all weekend Masses inviting men and families to consider joining with us, and inviting them to an information Open House on Sunday, November 10. Knights wearing the Council vest or other K of C identification were available after Masses to greet people in the foyer and during the pancake breakfast, mingling among the guests, greeting them, answering questions, and inviting them to our Open House. We picked up several good prospects through this work!! Now, how can you help? The Open House is November 10, less than one week away. Contact your prospects and suspects for membership early this week. Be sure to get the names and phone numbers of those that are interested and pass them along to Sir Charles. And if you are available on the 10 th, be there with the prospective member and be his personal host. The Open House is from 4:00 to 5:00 pm in the McGivney Room. As this is a joint effort with the Ladies Auxiliary, wives and families are welcome. There will be light refreshments and information on the Knights and the Ladies Auxiliary. All members are invited and encouraged to participate. On Wednesday, November 13, we will conduct a First Degree Exemplification for new members. Again, please attend (normal business meeting time) and welcome these new members into the order and our Council Sir Charles has worked had to put together a great plan. Your support and help in identifying prospective members and welcoming them into our Order is greatly appreciated. During November let us remember in prayer our deceased family members and loved ones, and to celebrate a joyous Thanksgiving with family and friends. Vivat Jesus!!

2 Our New Website is Progressing If you haven t logged on to our new website yet, you are in for a visual and information treat. In fact, this November newsletter as well as others in this fraternal year are available on the site---and in color!! The December Knights Knews will be loaded to the website only, and not provided as an attachment to the . As you might anticipate this conversion is a work in progress, but this site already provides more information and a better look than the site used previously. We believe the site will simplify the maintenance of member phone numbers and addresses. Give a big thumbs up and say thanks to Brothers Ron Krom and Doug Anderson for their commitment to get this running. More information on using the site will be forthcoming. If the Grand Knight can figure it out, you can too!! So jump on board! Don t mess around! Oktoberfest 2013 For the St. Patrick Annual Oktoberfest, the Parish Life Committee, Ladies Auxiliary, and Council 9993 pitched in to make a great event for parishioners. The Knights set up tables and chairs, cooked dogs and brats, & served adult beverages. The Ladies decorated, fixed all the side dishes, served, and brought desserts. At the end, everyone pitched in to put away table and chairs and clean up. In between, there was lots of food, fun, and fellowship, with music provided by DJ Dave Harmon and Father Larry. Some 500 brats & 250 hot dogs about 450 people served about1.5 kegs of beer Lots of dessert choices and family fun plus the cleanup

3 Football Parking Fundraiser Brothers, Although the starting hour was early (5:15 am) we had a good day for the Army - AFA game and Herman served-up great burritos for a hungry crew. Our last game of the season will be UNLV Thursday evening Nov 21st, with kickoff at 7:30 pm. There are six volunteers signed up and if anyone would like to join us, please Frank at peckfc@comcast.net. As it may be a bit cool that night, the tailgate will have chili and pulled pork sandwiches plus other tasty items. We wish to thank all of you who have helped with the AFA parking this season. What a great job you have done. By the Dec news letter, we should have total funds earned for the season at over $3,000. 4 Ladies Auxiliary Korner By Melissa Anderson I can t believe November is here already! Cool weather is back and snow is in the forecast. Since I was out of town the last half of October, I guess this update will be short. I need to thank three special Ladies for keeping things running while I was gone. Thank you, Ladies, for all that you did. From everything I ve heard, all of those events were great successes! Thanks, also, to everyone who helped them. As usual, you are all wonderful. 6 Knights Knews November2013 The Bottom Line - "$upporting Our Good Works" What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our Council [9993] and 4th Degree Assembly [3049]. October thankfully has seen the Knights through what we affectionately called the silly season. The Knights wrapped up our Mentally Handicapped weekend collections. Over the last few months, our volunteers efforts of passing out tootsie rolls yielded donations totaling over $4,500. A very big thank you to those who brave the storefronts to help make this happen. In addition to donning yellow vests for the Mentally Handicapped, the Knights also don yellow vests to park cars for USAFA Football Games. This month saw our next deposit of $ make its way to our accounts. Also wrapped up in October was our annual Football Frenzy fundraiser. In this program tickets are sold for $10 with the chance each week to win money based on the scores of the weekend s NFL football games. From these sales, the Council keeps $2 with $8 being passed on to the KofC State Charities Fund. This year, the Council sold 105 tickets for an income of $1, The Knights continue to support supplies for our Parish with a $100 donation and Life Network s Mobile Pregnancy Center with a donation of $100, both ongoing monthly contributions from Council The Knights hosted another Pancake Breakfast which grossed $337 with ~$325 in supplies purchased. As noted before, the pancake breakfast is not meant to be a large fundraiser, instead it is a service the Knight s provide to promote camaraderie and fraternity in our community. Lastly, both Council 9993 and Assembly 3049 made $500 (each) donations to the KofC State Charities Fund for Disaster Relief. Thank you to both for keeping an eye on the local community. If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by any regular business meeting or feel free to contact me directly. Faithfully yours, Taylor Lilly Treasurer, Council 9993, Purser, Assembly 3049 KC 9993 Pancake Breakfasts Thanks to the Knights who prepare and serve the parish each month Some of the Cooks and Servers On October 6

8 A Life Story By Ron Krom, DGK Everyone loves a good story, and what makes it good? It s usually a struggle good vs. evil, life vs. death, heroes rescuing the damsel in distress. Jesus told stories life changing stories, world changing stories that we still retell and learn from. Some stories really grab us when we see ourselves in them. We re the victim, the hero, an eye-witness, or maybe even the bad guy. A powerful story can change our lives. Tonight, I heard some very powerful stories at the Diocesan Pro-Life Dinner. They were testimonies of a life and death struggle that is pulling at the fabric of society, changing the nature of our country, snuffing out life and liberty of our citizens. You may have heard such stories before, but felt that they didn t apply to you. Maybe you felt that you weren t capable of making a difference in that story. What I heard tonight gave me hope that we can all be part of an epic battle and make a big difference in the outcome. We heard several life-transforming stories. One of a young mother, alone and desperate, considering abortion as the only way out until someone suggested she visited a pregnancy center. There she found comfort and support instead of judgment and condemnation. As a result she presented her baby boy, a life spared from death. A second lady spoke of the suffering she endured as a result of abortion urged by the father. For years, there was the torment of guilt and self-loathing, even after the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It was only after experiencing Project Rachel that she experienced healing and could forgive herself. Today, she is happily married and helping other post-abortive women through the healing process. The next story was about a young girl who was able to attend the March for Life in Washington, DC. She witnessed the multitude of marchers who demonstrated and prayed for an end to abortion. Then there was a witness to the dark side pro-abortion picketers changing slogans belittling and denouncing them. Around the picketers were people on their knees praying instead of arguing or yelling back. Her heart was converted and she is now an advocate to have other young people get that experience. The Keynote Speaker, David Bereit, held us captive with several stories of his experiences that opened his eyes, and he knew that he had to do something. When abortion came to his town, the community recognized the evil in their midst, and from their pro-life movement, he got the idea of 40 Days for Life. It resonated biblically, too. 40 is a powerful and recurring number, as Jesus spending 40 days in the desert. There he prayed and fasted and faced evil. So with God (prayer and fasting) there is transformation and evil can be overcome. And abortion is a spiritual crisis; it begins and ends with God, and only with God is it possible to overcome. And God can change the world one person at a time. Catholics have all heard about abortion, the millions of slain innocents, so why are so few doing anything about it? Perhaps if they realized that abortion is changing their lives, their children s lives, their community and their nation, then perhaps they would take it personally. One person can save lives. We heard of a mother about to abort her baby, but was saved by one person standing, praying in front of the clinic, who offered comfort and help. The 40 Days for Life Movement has saved the lives of almost 8000 babies and led to the conversion of 83 abortion workers who left the industry. Everyone can make a difference. Father Bill Carmody has been a champion for life in our community. We can join with him in so many ways. First is prayer and fasting, especially during the 40 Days for Life. We can keep prayerful vigil at abortion clinics and be a witness to God s truth. We can be advocates for life, reaching out to family, friends, and neighbors to and inviting them to join in. Finally, we can support life - giving ministries with time, talent, and treasure. For example, our council has financially supported Life Network and the Mobile Pregnancy Center, the State K of C Ultrasound Initiative, as well as the Respect Life Crafters. Let s think what else we can do as a Council perhaps something spiritual as well as material. Pray on it and may the Lord of Life shine on you!
