1 July 2014 Brothers and Ladies, As a newly elected and installed Grand Knight, I thank you for the honor and privilege of serving in that capacity. As did Pope Frances, I now ask you all for your prayers and support. Prayers are so important because our Council and I in particular need the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit to set priorities, discern rightly, and do God s will. We are called as Knights to be strong in the faith and live it, and that requires prayer and the sacraments. Secondly, I need your support because together we can accomplish anything, especially when God is with us. We can all act as individuals and do some good, but united as brothers and sisters, our strength and abilities are multiplied many times over. Just as the apostles went out and formed communities of believers, and as monks and sisters formed communities of religious, Father McGivney created the Knights as a community of brothers and their families, dedicated to charity within their homes, their councils, their churches, and their communities. Many Knights in our council are very active on their own in the Parish or in the Community. They may be in a parish ministry, serve on Parish Council, be a liturgical minister, and so on. They may volunteer at the soup kitchen, food pantry, or Habitat for Humanity. In charity, they give of themselves. By also serving in the Knights of Columbus activities, they complement and round out their charity, giving of time and talent many other ways. This is especially true in our parish, and in the 6 program areas we focus upon. Most recently, we used moneys from past fundraising to give $5000 to Operation Renovation. Other donations have gone towards the parish capital campaign and debt reduction campaign. Time and talent is supplied for things like supporting the parish picnic and Oktoberfest, fish fries, and monthly pancake breakfast. When Father needs help, Who ya gonna call? NOT the Ghostbusters! Odds are that the Knights are high on the list. Together, we can be a great resource not possible as individuals. Unity allows us to magnify our charity. In the community, Knights give in many ways, such as Coats for Kids, the Tootsie Roll drive to support the developmentally challenged, supporting Special Olympics, the Wounded Warrior games and more. By supporting the Mobile Pregnancy Center and Respect Life Crafters, we ACT on the belief that all life is precious and sacred. There are many other wonderful aspects of Knighthood. To me, fraternity means the friendship of many great Catholic men men that stand by each other, support and affirm each other. These relationships are built upon the bonds of faith, loyalty, and service. And of course patriotism means to me that we value the principles upon which our nation was founded the Constitution of the United States and the principle of One Nation Under God. Continued on next page

2 So you see, brothers, that if all 200+ of us respond to the call and challenge of Knighthood, what a great influence we can be! But how can this happen? How will you know where you re needed and participate? We do have the answer, but again it depends on you. We have a newsletter with calendar published every month do you get it by mail or from the webpage, and more importantly, DO YOU READ IT?! So often I ask a member if they are coming to an event, and the response is Huh? If you have an and aren t getting any from the K of C, either we don t have it or we have the wrong one. Please notify us. We may phone to ask for help with a breakfast or whatever. Do we have your correct number? If we leave a message, are you courteous enough to call back, even with a no? Show your unity by keeping connected. Recently I was blessed to meet some of you at the K of C Picnic, a fun evening for families. What a great time that was, with lots of food, fun, and fellowship. We re going to have more of that on Sky Sox night (more info later) and I hope to meet more of you there. By the time you read this, we will have had Corporate Communion, a time to worship as a body and then dine as family. If you haven t tried these things, you really should. I think you ll like it! In Christ, Ron Krom Operation Renovation Herman Jasper, Past Grand Knight Cleta and I have been St. Patrick parishioners almost 22 years. We have seen the parish develop in an orderly and responsible way. First the church, then the office building on Dominion Way, then purchasing the land for building the Faith Formation Center and church renovation, then the actual build of the Center financed in part by the sale of the office building, then the debt reduction program, and now Operation Renovation. The pastors and lay leaders of St. Patrick have been responsible stewards of the financial gifts entrusted to them. Father Larry introduced Operation Renovation to the parish with a "soft sell" some months ago. He spoke to the parish about the importance of Operation Renovation the weekend of June 22. This parish effort strikes to the heart of what the Knights of Columbus are about--faith, parish, family, youth, supporting our priests, community, service, etc. I was pleased when Council members authorized a $5, contribution to Operation Renovation. Now we are invited to take another look (or perhaps our first serious look) and pray what is a suitable personal contribution. We just increased our contribution. Perhaps you can give $20.00 to $50.00, or perhaps $ to $ , or perhaps nothing. Every gift of any size will be a help! Thank you for your support, and for taking the time to pray for the success of Operation Renovation and St. Patrick Parish. May God Bless you and your family. Brother Knights, if you have changes to your home address, phone number or address, please Paul Miller, Financial Secretary, at paul-jr@themillers.com or call (leave a message if no answer)

3 The Bottom Line - "$upporting Our Good Works" What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our 3 rd Degree Council [9993] and 4 th Degree Assembly [3049]. Summer has started and June is gone. This was a fun month for the Knights, the month for our Annual KofC 9993 Family Picnic. A resolution was passed authorizing over $700 to support this event, of which about $650 was spent on food and activities (bouncy houses) so far. Look elsewhere in this newsletter for more information on how the event went. On the administrative side, Council 9993 has an advertisement in the St. Patrick s Parish Bulletin every month. Our bill for $425 came due and was paid this month to keep that advertisement, and the visibility of the Council, going. The Knights hosted a Pancake Breakfast which grossed $ with $ in supplies purchased. Note that last month s (May s) breakfast cost was only $148 for a gross income of over $300, balancing out over two months time. This goes to show that the breakfasts are more to support Parish social life than to make money. The Legacy fund, mentioned rather extensively in previous newsletters, paid its dividend this month of $2, on $31k principal. This dividend will be kept separate for use in accordance with the suggestions of the Trustees and in the spirit of the Resolution regarding the Legacy fund, printed in the last newsletter. The Knights continue to support supplies for our Parish with a donation of $100 and Life Network s Mobile Pregnancy Center with a donation of $100, both ongoing monthly contributions from Council Lastly, the semi-annual audit will be conducted this month. Look in next month s newsletter for details. If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by any regular business meeting or feel free to contact me directly Faithfully yours, Taylor Lilly Treasurer, Council 9993 and Purser, Assembly 3049 Council Charitable Works, Activities, and the Need for Fundraising Herman Jasper, Trustee Our Council participates in many commendable projects and activities. Some involve prayer, some volunteering time and talent, and some require a modest amount of Treasure. For the last 12 to 15 years the majority of our fundraising has come from working concessions at IN- VESCO Field (now Sports Authority Field) in Denver, and in the most recent years directing traffic at the USAFA Falcon stadium before and after home football games. It has been a productive ride and great fellowship working together! Due to changes that appear to be taking place at the USAFA it is possible, though not certain, that our opportunities to help with parking may be over we won t know until the end of August. If this happens we will need to replace the $ to $ we earn from this source each year. We will still have smaller fundraisers in place like pancake breakfasts, although this too is reduced due to kitchen renovation. We also have fish frys, Christmas Cards, and Football Frenzy. Let us brainstorm individually and as Knights Council to find new fundraising opportunities. What ideas do you have? Sponsoring events like a golf tourney, gift cards/scrip from merchants, selling Christmas trees, hosting Bingo, what else? Or perhaps you know a property owner who would like to allow parking at special community events if there was a way to collect the money Knights can do this!! So think outside the box and bring your ideas forward!

Sir Mark Elio June 2014, Knight of the Month Council 9993 Sir Mark is recognized for June, 2014, for his compassion for Brother Knights and his service to Council membership. Recently Sir Mark became aware that a retired priest and military chaplain in Colorado Springs had died. Through his diligent investigation the priest s name was determined. His action made possible a 4 th Degree Honor Guard of eleven Sir Knights at the priest s funeral. Thanks, Mark, for participating in the Honor Guard, and for your part in causing this Honor Guard to take place, During this past fraternal year, Mark served as Worthy Lecturer. He provided the members short reflections, especially on the life and example of Pope Francis. Joining the Knights of Columbus in 1996, he advanced to the Fourth Degree as a founding member of St. Patrick Assembly 4039 and is an active participant in all Council and Assembly activities, projects, and meetings.

5 Ladies Auxiliary Corner Fran Krom It is July, and the newly elected officers for the Ladies Auxiliary have been installed. I have taken the office of President. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Sir Knight Ron Krom s wife of 42 years. Ron and I were both on active duty in the US Army when we met. I continued my service as an Army Nurse until my retirement in After four additional years of clinical practice, I left nursing and worked in the airline industry for eight years. I am fully retired now, and have enjoyed the transition in my life. It is a good time to serve. This fraternal year our Ladies Auxiliary will organize two bake sales to raise money for charity donations, including the holiday food basket project at St. Patrick. I welcome support from all the knights families to provide the delicious baked goods for the events. Autumn will be a busy season for us, as we assist in social events and fundraising projects with the Council. For women who are not members of the Ladies Auxiliary, consider attending our meeting and social gathering on September 24 th to meet us and learn more about what we do. Enjoy this wonderful summer season. If I haven t met you in person, talk to me at Sky Sox night. I m planning to bring pie!! Culture of Life Victories By Ron Krom Good News from Shawn Carney, director of 40 Days for Life. Four more abortion centers are closing in Killeen, Texas; Asheville, NC; Creston, IA; and Red Oak, IA. This makes a total of 54 abortion clinics that have closed after 40 Days for Life campaigns. That should give us hope that our efforts can also succeed here in Colorado Springs. Another encouraging news item was the Supreme Court decision that eliminated the buffer zone around abortion clinics. Now pro-life counselors and prayer vigils no longer have to stay 35 feet from entrances to abortion clinics, a ruling that had stood since The challenge to the law was based on First Amendment grounds of freedom of speech. However, this doesn t mean that there won t be further attempts to restrict access around abortion clinics, supposedly to protect patients from harassment. The Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic on Centennial Avenue was placed far back from the street on private property. Approaching this clinic can get one arrested for trespassing, so prayer vigils must remain on the Centennial sidewalk. Those dedicated to the Culture of Life and an end to abortion continue to meet on the sidewalk and keep that clinic covered with prayer. Look for the next 40 Days for Life campaign here in September. But keep praying until then for an end to abortion. And remember the Mass on the sidewalk near Planned Parenthood every Friday morning at 9 AM, held by Fr. Bill Carmody.

6 Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life by Sir Knight Mark Elio, Lecturer In our lives, as in the natural cycle of nature, we experience the "seasons of life." We encounter these seasons in birth, childhood, adolescence and in our senior years. Throughout these stages we are provided God's graces, wisdom and strength to grow strong in these seasons of life. Our life as Knights in the worldwide Catholic fraternity founded by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney reflects and demonstrates our growth through how we exemplify the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism, each essentially united with each other in a unique bond. This month, we begin a new season in our Council life with the commencement of another fraternal year with a newly-installed Grand Knight and slate of Officers. How we grow as brothers and an effective Council in the next twelve months depends on how willing and dedicated we are to facing the challenges ahead of us and making the most productive use of our time, talent and resources. With God all things are possible. Also, this month, one of the Principles of our Order, Patriotism, comes to the fore with the celebration of Independence Day on the Fourth of July. With this in mind, let us not take our freedoms for granted. As you are aware, our freedoms are under assault with the attacks on our freedom of conscience and religious liberty through the Health and Human Services Contraceptive Mandate which is not a political but moral issue. In light of this, we must remain vigilant in prayer and action to defend our freedoms established by our Founding Fathers many of whom were Christians who gave their very lives that we might have the benefits we enjoy. As I write this, two pertinent sayings come to mind, "Freedom is never free, it always comes at a price" and "All gave some, some gave all." Never forget the cost of freedom. As we progress through this new fraternal year to accomplish the goals the Lord sets before us, let's together take instruction and encouragement from the words of Pope Francis, "Commit yourselves to great ideals, to the most important things. We Christians were not chosen by the Lord for little things; push onwards toward the highest principles. Stake your lives on noble ideals." In closing, in this new season of our Council life, let us stand strong in mutual cooperation and servant-hood to face the exciting tasks awaiting us. Let us grow strong in the seasons of our lives and truly be the humble and loyal "band of brothers" to whom the Lord has graciously called us..take Me Out to the Ballgame (and tailgate)! Summer time means baseball, and also means it times for our annual outing to the Sky Sox. We always pick a $2 Tuesday, July 29 th, which makes it very affordable for families, and the tailgate is FREE, with the Council providing grilled dogs, burgers and beverages. Just meet us at the park at 5:30 PM and bring a side dish to share, a chair to chill in, and a smile. $2 parking and $2 tickets and FREE tailgate just what the Fox ordered! To save your seat at the game and let us know how much food to buy, contact Rick Losey (rick.losey@gmail.com) and don t delay. We only have a block of 70 reserved seats and we want to see you there!

7 Council 9993 Family Picnic Friday June 20, 2014 Bonnie Fitzpatrick Patio and Room Herman Jasper This was very successful Family picnic. It is estimated that 125 attended (does not include toddlers and infants). WOW!! The weather was ideal with temps in the mid-80s with a modest SE breeze. This is an ideal setting can t be beat!! Thank you St. Patrick Parish! The grassy area was used for inflatable features, grilling, coolers for beverages, other games, fellowship (about 24 folding chairs placed in shaded areas). The Bonnie room was set up with tables and chairs with the food service line along the windows. The inflatable features (large bouncy house and 18 ft. high slide) were very popular with the kids. Other activities included a basketball goal and three balls for shooting hoops, T-ball stand and bat, Frisbee toss, and box tic-toe. No doubt, the inflatable features are the draw for the kids (and parents) but we can t overlook the food and the venue!! Guests were invited to bring go withs or deserts, and this they did the serving line was three long tables and overloaded. The Council purchased the meats (1/3 lb. hamburgers, hot dogs, boneless/skinless chicken breasts, and Caninos brats (cut in half). Grill-masters Rick Losey, Mark Elio, Ellis Elee and Jim Wermers did an outstanding job!! Thanks to the grill-masters, Maxine McDermott, Ron and Fran Krom, and Scarlett Tubridy and Mary Ann Lamecker from parish staff, and the numerous members that pitched in to help make this a success. It is always a pleasure to see Knights and Ladies work together!! I sure had a great time!! Down the Slide!

By Ron Krom, Grand Knight In May, Council 9993 held elections and chose their officers for the fraternal year, as reported in the June newsletter. Then, on June 25 th, over 60 Knights and Ladies gathered at the Texas T-Bone on North Academy to install the new officers for the Council and the Ladies Auxiliary. With so many people attending, there was lots of conversation and socializing, followed by a great meal and the installation ceremonies. We were honored to have Barb Heumann, Ginny Lopez, and Madeline Barnitz represent the State Ladies Auxiliary and perform the installation for the Ladies Auxiliary. On the Knights side, District Deputy Kevin Stipak performed the honors, which were also witnessed by Worthy State Deputy Chuck Page. It was a very pleasant and fruitful evening for all, especially with the death-by-chocolate cake! Many thanks to all the Knights, Ladies, and distinguished guests who helped make it memorable and successful. State Deputy Chuck Page, also a Past Grand Knight for our council, congratulates incoming Grand Knight Ron Krom.
