1 Cowboy Bulletin Wyoming Knights of Columbus Octob er 2014 Catholic Devotion to the Holy Rosary Fall returns to Wyoming. During October tradition has it that Catholics pray the rosary. This tradition has existed since the day Mary presented it to St. Dominic in It s a time to take out our beads, and publicly pray the Rosary. That the holy Rosary has its origin from the Immaculate Mary herself was confirmed in Pope Leo XIII s encyclical (Octobri Menses). He also clarified the original institution of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Recently the Luminous Mystery was added to the list. This year the commemoration of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7 th. In the words of St. Dominic God has left us the Rosary, so that we may learn, with Mary s help, to pray easily and simply in the same Holy Faith. This simple prayer still has the power to transform the world. Join your parishioners as they pray the Rosary prior to weekend Masses. The Order-wide Church Membership drive is scheduled for the weekend of October 11 th and 12 th. Has your Council planned to hold a membership drive this month? No! Well, If you can t hold one this month or have not planned for one yet, please consider holding one during November. Let s try to have at least One Knight Before Christmas. Note: Further Information on preparation and execution of your Church Membership Drive is located on page 2 in this Cowboy Bulletin. WHY NOT PLAN TO CELEBRATE COLUMBUS DAY On October 13 th THIS YEAR IN HONOR OF OUR ORDER S NAMESAKE? Are you ready? Here we go again! No, it s not about the hunting or football season, but be glad to get away from all the rhetoric being served up daily. The political ads, increasing at an alarming rate, have every candidate shuffling for YOUR VOTE. How much they ll influence you by their rhetoric or promises depends on how interested you are in the election process. Try to attend one of the town meetings held by candidates in your area. Make your voice heard on the important issues before next month s election. As American Citizens, it is not only our privilege but also our duty to prepare ourselves on the issues and to vote accordingly. Listening to the debates, apart from the secondguessing of network talking heads, might provide some idea of what a candidate stands for. In any case: Get Out and Vote on November 4 th. All of us share the ups and downs, the pains and joys of life, the same weather changes. I suggest it s about attitude. I heard a true story of a happy, successful business man who forgot to lock the back door in his store. He was surprised by a burglar who shot him twice in the stomach. The wounds were very serious. In the operating room he saw fear on the doctor s face. The doctor asked, Are you allergic to anything? The man answered, YES. -- Everything stopped. -- I m allergic to bullets! Operate as if I m alive and going to live; not like you are dealing with a dead man. His attitude changed everyone and most likely the outcome. Faith and attitude are intertwined. Real faith is a practical, personal relationship with Jesus, not just a belief in an image or idea or doctrine. We are confident and have joy when we relate to Jesus as a Friend and Savior. Only the Son of God loves us totally, and has the ability and desire to save us. Our attitude reflects our being loved and being saved. We can have hope and can find confidence in all circumstances and all times. A strong faith determines and strengthens our attitude. It allows us to think as God thinks. He wants the very best for everyone. Blessed Fall, ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING Job, in Chapter 3, is lamenting his life, even to being born. Some people complain, having a bad hair day. PREPARATION PHASE: Obtain the pastor s permission to conduct a Blitz during a specific weekend. Advertise the event, ahead of time, in the weekly church bulletin. Order Prospect Cards, Form 100 s, recruitment pamphlets and posters. Arrange for a Membership Recruitment Announcement to be made during Mass by Priest or council speaker. Select your best spokesperson(s) to present this Membership Recruitment announcement at the church membership weekend. Have brother Knights on hand to answer questions and collect prospect cards at each Mass. Establish the date of the next first degree. FOLLOW-UP: Contact every prospect within 48 hours of the drive. Inform prospect and his family of the time and date of the information session. Offer Transportation to the information session, if necessary. Hold the information session for prospects and families. Show one of the recruitment videos. Explain the requirements for membership to all present. Have your insurance field agent review the Order s insurance programs. Have brother Knights to assist prospects in completing the Form 100. Inform candidates of the date of the next First Degree. 3 Cowboy Bulletin October, 2014 Page 3 Dear Sirs and Brother Knights: October s here! The leaves are starting to turn on the trees and there is a nip in the air. Soon we will be into the Holiday Season. Our thoughts, at this time, turn to the hunting seasons and fall activities. Let s not forget our forget membership recruiting activities. Our numbers are slowly growing, but we are a long ways away from meeting our goals. We had two Degrees on Saturday the 27 th which brought new members into the Order. Now that we have the momentum started, let s build on it. We are still in the running for awards, at Supreme, for the State. The Holiday season is the time of the year when we all meet with family and friends to celebrate. The stores are already setting up displays for Christmas. And, it s only October! I remember being raised in a small town. We had a small variety store there and the windows never had anything in them for Christmas until the week after Thanksgiving. Now the trend is for stores to go from Holiday to Holiday just for the money with no concept of regard for what the season is about. While traveling, I was listening to the radio and heard a story worthy of sharing with you. The town or city where the events took place was not mentioned. A group of people are trying to get a law passed to stop one of the local churches from putting up a life-size Nativity scene. This has been a custom for this particular church for years. The members of the church said that people came from all over to view the display. A spokesperson for the Organized Religion group stated that it offended their sense of freedom. I wondered what means or mind control they are using to get people to think like them. I can remember a story told by Bishop Hart in It was about a man who stole his mother s purse. The story goes on that her daughter had taken his mother for a weekly shopping trip. Before returning home the mother insisted that they have lunch at a local Pizza Hunt restaurant. That s where the robbery occurred. Bishop Hart continued with the following lesson: We had to love this person. We didn t have to like him. Jesus said that we need to love all peoples. Sometimes putting this principle into action can be a challenge. We must show love to those who ridicule us and try to get laws changed to their way of thinking. We have to love them, but we don t have to like them or support what they stand for. I really love this time of year. It teaches us as Catholics that a baby born over 2000 years ago is still making an impact upon the world today, as He did during his stay on earth. I ask that you remember in your prayers Father James Doudigan, who recently went to his final reward. Also remember all the deceased priests in our prayers. Their service will never be forgotten. I end this month s article by reminding you of our goals for this fraternal year: ONE MEMBER PER COUNCIL PER MONTH. ONE FIRST DEGREE PER DISTRICT PER MONTH. Vivat Jesus! C. Council # 2720 Hosts Degrees On September 27 th, Laramie Council #2720 hosted Exemplifications of the First, Second, and Third Degrees. Three new members of our council, Brothers Oscar Millan, Joe Gulino, and Peter Ballou, and three additional members, Luke Schneider, Ethan Kyle, and Jason Phillips, advanced to the Third Degree. Two others from Council 801 in Cheyenne, Brothers Jeff Shaffer and Dave Kinkade, were also advanced to the Third Degree. A total of 8 members were advanced to the 3 rd degree during this exemplification ceremony. State Officers attending the degree work included State Advocate, John Kaiser, and District Deputy, Bob Taylor. The Cheyenne Council 801 Degree Teams did an outstanding job and are deserving of special thanks for all of their efforts and time. Without them the day would not have been possible.
