January 2014 Brothers and Ladies: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! We find ourselves embarking on the new year of 2014 and continuing to celebrate Christmas through Jan 6 (feast of the Epiphany)! On Sunday, December 29, we celebrated the feast of the Holy Family. We are beginning the last half of our fraternal year. What better time to reflect on the gifts we have received from God, and consider the blessings we receive as Knights of Columbus a family fraternal order of Catholic men embracing the principles of: Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism In the next few weeks we have many opportunities to grow with the Knights of Columbus, and to invite other Catholic men to share in these same Knights of Columbus blessings. On Saturday, January 11 th there will be a first Degree Exemplification in conjunction with the State Mid-Year meeting being held at the Marriott Hotel here in Colorado Springs. Candidates are to gather at 12:30 am. This will be the only 1 st Degree for Council 9993 during January. We have candidates that will participate, and I ask your help in recruiting other men for this ceremony. Candidates will need to have their applications (Form 100 s) complete by our next business meeting (Jan 8) so that they can be voted upon. Contact Charles Cote or Herman Jasper as you identify additional candidates. This will be a moving experience for candidates and observers alike, so plan to be a part of it. There are rather large numbers of 1 st Degree Knights in our Council that have not advanced to the 2 nd and 3 rd Degree. The 3 rd Degree is the final step to full Knighthood. On Sunday, March 2, there is a major Degree Exemplification (2 nd and 3 rd Degrees) at the Air Force Academy Chapel. This is a close and convenient location and I invite and encourage every 1 st Degree Knight to be part of this. This will qualify you for advancement to the 4 th Degree. Mark your calendar now, more information will be forthcoming. Contact Charles Cote or Herman Jasper to indicate your plans to participate. This is Super Bowl Sunday, but we anticipate the exemplification will be over before the game begins. A 4 th Degree exemplification will be held on Saturday, February 8, at Bethlehem Assembly 1966 in Broomfield, CO. Registration will begin at 11:00 am and conclude with a banquet at 6:45. More information will be forthcoming. If you are interested contact Charles Cote or Herman Jasper. The next seven weeks provide unusual opportunities to welcome new members into our order, and for current members to advance. Offer your encouragement to those that are interested. May you and your family receive abundant blessings in Vivat Jesus!!

Ladies Auxiliary Corner Melissa Anderson Happy 2014! I hope that your Christmas was holy, happy and only slightly crazy. Our Christmas party on December 7 th was a wonderful evening, with great food, good music and lots of time to relax and enjoy each other s company. Thanks again to Debbie Williams, Ann Weida and Georgene Survil for organizing the evening. The State Ladies Snowball Sweetheart Dinner and Dance is fast approaching on Saturday, January 18 th. If you plan to attend, please let me know ( or melissa-anderson@q.com) so we can try to have at least one table of 8 from the Council and Ladies. Don t forget the parish Epiphany party after Mass this Saturday! Our monthly meeting will be January 22 nd in the Fitzpatrick room. Things have slowed down now that we survived the fall craziness, so we should have a short meeting. Hope to see you there. I ve come to the conclusion recently that I almost appreciate the Christmas season or the REAL Christmas season more, and focus better, as we celebrate the feast days in the few days after Christmas. For me, the miracle of the baby in the manger seems much more real as we celebrate St. Stephen, St. John the Evangelist, the Holy Innocents and the Holy Family. May the blessings of the Christ Child continue to shower down on you and yours during the rest of this Christmas season and all of Christmas Party

Knights Knews January 2014 More pictures at CULTURE OF LIFE 41 YEARS OF ROE v. WADE By Ron Krom nd st January 22 marks the 41 anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, a ruling that allows babies to be aborted at will, for any reason, up to the time of delivery. That ruling, in essence, made pre-born children non-persons and left them unprotected by the law and the U.S. Constitution. In those 41 years, somewhere over 55 million children in the U.S. have been sacrificed to our modern culture s lack of moral restraint, and its desire for material possessions and convenience. The slaughter continues at the rate of about 1.2 million babies per year over 3000 per day. Every year during January, our council erects a memorial to this holocaust by placing crosses on the parish lawn. We plan to do this on January 14th at 2:30 PM, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, information about rescheduling will be sent via and posted on our web page. You all are invited to participate. When your family and friends mention this memorial, remind them of its significance, not just for the U.S. but for the world. And, remind those born after January 22, 1973 that they survived only because their parents chose life!

Parking at Christmas Eve Masses Taylor Lilly Once again our Brother Knights lent their time and subjected their bodies to the cold to help keep Christmas parishioners from trading paint while driving in and out of Masses on December 24 th. I would like to extend great appreciation to Brothers Bill Cruse, Mark Elio, Jim Davis, Doug Anderson, Tony Patalano, and GK Herman Jasper. In addition to these worthy veterans of directing cars, I would like to especially thank two of our newest 1 st Degree Knights, Brothers John D Alesio and Chris Bergen. The parking this year went extraordinarily smoothly, a fact only made possible by your time and dedication to the parish. I heard only good things from the parishioners coming out and then again from staff and volunteers I met at the 10 pm Mass. It was a complete success. Thank you all again. Welcome to St. Patrick Council 9993 Brothers Michael Lanning and John D Alesio On December 11 in a solemn and impressive exemplification we welcomed the above new members into the Knights of Columbus and Council A special Thank You to the exemplification team that conducted the exemplification Great Job!! As a result of our November membership recruiting effort and open house we have more candidates. The next 1 st degree exemplification is Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the State Mid- Year meeting. There will not be a 1 st Degree exemplification as part of our January Council meetings. And please continue to ask men to join the Knights of Columbus.

The Bottom Line "$upporting Our Good Works " What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our 3 rd Degree Council [9993] and 4 th Degree Assembly [3049]. December was a very busy month for The Knights finances. First on the docket is that you can look for a recap of the biannual audit in next month s (February) newsletter. The Council received what is probably our last deposit for the year from parking cars at USAFA Football Games. The total income for this fundraiser was $4, The Knights hosted a Pancake Breakfast which grossed $ with ~$250 in supplies purchased. As noted before, the pancake breakfast is not meant to be a large fundraiser, instead it is a service the Knight s provide to promote camaraderie and fraternity in our Parish community. Council 9993 was very pleased to contribute $ to the St. Patrick s Parish Holiday Food Baskets as part of the Supreme Council s Food for Families Program. In this program, the Council receives a $100 bonus from the Supreme Council for every $500 donated to a food bank or kitchen. As part of our Christmas festivities, the Ladies Auxiliary hosted our annual Christmas Party. Cost to the Council was ~$600, split between helping the Ladies with expenses and buying tickets for our parish clergy. The Council also made its annual Christmas donation to the Supreme Seminarian RSVP Program with a donation of $500 for our local Seminarian. Also, just in time for Christmas, Council 9993 made its annual donation to the Supreme Mentally Handicapped drive, also known as the Tootsie Roll drive. These funds will in turn be re-distributed to local charities supporting the mentally handicapped. The efforts of Knights this year allowed the Council to write a check for $3, to the KofC Colorado State Charities Fund. The Knights continue to support supplies for our Parish with a donation of $100 and Life Network s Mobile Pregnancy Center with a donation of $100, both ongoing monthly contributions from Council The Council continues to support the Lighthouse Media display in the gathering space. The display was restocked at a cost of ~$275 with some of the cost offset by donations, $125.00, from those who have enjoyed the CD s. Also as a service to the parish, the Knights sold Christmas cards under the Keep Christ in Christmas campaign, bringing in over $600 for an initial investment of only $245. Profits from these sales will go to local charities serving education in Pro-Life. If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by any regular business meeting or feel free to contact me directly. Faithfully yours, Taylor Lilly Treasurer, Council 9993 Purser, Assembly 3049 Brother Knights! Taylor Lilly I would like to take this opportunity to catch you up on a few winners in our annual Football Frenzy fundraiser. As a reminder tickets were sold for $10.00, of which the council received $2 back as a rebate. The person purchasing the ticket filled out the stub and gave the stub and money to the knight doing the selling. Then, the person who bought the ticket just watched football. It was that easy. Each game ticket had four (4) different teams each week. If your four (4) teams scored the most or least points in any week, you are a winner! In addition to the football frenzy game ticket, each purchase came with a discount card for participating retailers. See the website for more information: I am happy to report that from Council 9993, Bill Souba won $20 and Brian Anderson won $40. Congratulations to our brother Knights!

Special Goings-On on January 21 By Herman Jasper This is the date of our social meeting and we will have guests. Come welcome the representatives of the organizations that will receive the proceeds from the Mentally Handicapped Drive. We have the checks in hand-all will be GO for the presentations. In addition to the cash, let s give these organizations our moral support for the good work that they do. Additionally we will have some of our own members present to be recognized as new Life Members. Quite a great accomplishment. They deserve your hearty round of applause. Items of Note By Herman Jasper Financial Secretary Paul Miller is in the process of getting out dues notices for With over 200 members in our Council, this is no small effort. We can all help make this year-long job of billing, collecting, recording, and issuing membership cards easier for Paul (remember he is a volunteer too). Submit your dues when you receive the billing. Don t set it aside for another day, perhaps to be misplaced and forgotten. If you are one of the few with a balance remaining from 2013, or perhaps even earlier years, please handle this as soon as possible. If you live out of town and wish to transfer to a new council home, this process is initiated by your new council. If you are active duty military and are billed for dues, please let Paul know so that he can waive the dues for you and note this on your record. Included in the December newsletter was the publication of a resolution to provide financial assistance to the family of Brother Joe Marjan for the construction of a cement sidewalk to aid in moving his young son s wheelchair from the rear entrance of the home to the street. On December 11, this resolution was read for the 2 nd time and passed overwhelmingly. Thank you brother Knights of Council 9993 for your kindness and generosity! The Way Forward!! In recent weeks there have been coffee cup discussions of how our Council can be more effective in our projects and more rewarding for our members. Brother Taylor Lilly has volunteered to facilitate a meeting with Council members on Wednesday, January 29, at 6:30 pm in the McGivney room. As this is a 5 th Wednesday and we don t have any other Knights activities it should be possible for many to attend. So, please, come share your thoughts, ideas, and priorities. Be watching for more information on this from Taylor. A few weeks ago the Grand Knight sent out a letter he received from Supreme regarding funding for a priests scholarship fund for the military archdiocese. A commitment has been made to provide $1M over 5 years to assist in training new priests. About half of this has been raised. It appears as though this is primarily a 4 th Degree project but donations/assistance is welcome from all sources. Our St. Patrick Assembly 3049 is fulfilling a commitment to this cause. For those members that find this a worthy cause, the Council will receive donations and forward them on to Supreme for this scholarship fund. Make checks payable to Council 9993 and note it is for the military archdiocese scholarship fund.

Falcon Masses are at 8:30 am with 8:00 Showtime. Calhan Masses are at 10:30 am with a 10:00 Showtime Fr. Mike s Ponderings As we begin our New Year of 2014 we need to be ever more aware of attacks against our families. The adversary are those who are anti-christian and anti-god. They resent the fact that God is God and they are not, and so they delight in disfiguring the image of God, the human family: - This is the real reason behind the immoral movement towards legally recognizing homosexual unions as equivalent to marriages. - It is the real reason behind the efforts to expand abortion laws throughout the world, to promote contraception and premarital sex. - To expand no-fault divorce laws. - To legalize euthanasia so as to be able to dispose of the elderly when they get inconvenient. All of these trends claim to promote human freedom and dignity. But in fact, whether their promoters realize it or not, they are direct attacks against human freedom and dignity. - You can pull the wheels off a car and make a pedestal out of the tires. - You can rip out the engine, smash it up, and put it on top of the pedestal.- You can peel off the frame, tear it to pieces, twist the pieces into fascinating contorted shapes, and arrange them as decorations around the smashed engine and slashed tires. - And if you do, you may have an award winning piece of post modern art, but that car will never again make it out of the driveway. God wants us to make it out of the driveway and to cruise all the way home to heaven. Shall we make a collective New Years resolution this year to save and protect our families graced by the power of God! Happy Holy New Year Padre Mike
