(For weddings, please call at least six months in advance of your planned wedding date.) Communion/Anointing the Sick Due to privacy laws priests must be asked by the family members to visit parishioners in the hospital or nursing home. Please advise us of those in need of the Church s ministry, whether they are homebound or have been hospitalized. We are happy to bring the Eucharist to those who cannot get out to attend Mass. And if someone is ill or declining in health, the pastor is happy to come to their home, anoint them and bring them Holy Communion. Please call the rectory, and we will make the arrangements for you. Cemetery Arrangements Gate of Heaven Parish has four cemeteries Calvary Cemetery, Water Street Cemetery, St. Matthew Cemetery and St. Margaret Cemetery. You are always welcome to make arrangements for your eventual burial in one of these cemeteries, as three of the four have sites to lease. Please call the rectory in order to ask about end-of-life preparations. Parish Bulletin If you, or someone you know, is homebound, please call the rectory and let us know. We d love to send them the weekly bulletin so they can keep up with the goings-on in the parish. Also, if you are a snowbird, and head south or west for the winter, we can also get the bulletin to your winter address. That way you always know what s going on here at home! 4 Solemnity of Mary... Tuesday, January 1, is the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. It is a holy day of obligation for Catholics. There will be a vigil Mass Monday evening at St. Matthew Church in Whitefield beginning at 5:00 p.m. On Tuesday, the holy day, Mass will be at 9 a.m. at All Saints Church in Lancaster. We never give more honor to Jesus than when we honor his mother, and we honor her simply and solely to honor him all the more perfectly. ST. LOUIS MARIE DE MONTFORT Saturday morning Mass at the shrine... Beginning Saturday, January 5, the Saturday morning Mass at 9:00 a.m. will be held at All Saints Church. It will continue at All Saints through the winter until weather permits returning to Our Lady of the Mountains Shrine in Bretton Woods. Big time thanks... Thank you so much to all of you who joined us for our Christmas Day Community Meal! As you know, it takes a whole crew to put the dinner on and to serve it to a hungry crowd. So thank you all those of you who baked turkeys, hams and desserts. Our gratitude goes to those who donated food items and to those who donated financially to help with the cost of the meal. Those who set up the hall and dismantled everything afterward are very much appreciated. We can t overlook the spud squad who sat and peeled countless potatoes to add to the menu. And to all of you who stayed behind to help clean up you re the best! For well over a decade now we have come together to offer folks a place to go on Christmas Day if they are hungry, lonely or just looking for a place to light and enjoy the holiday spirit. With good weather we usually serve over 300 people each year. It s quite an accomplishment for this small parish. But that s what selflessness and love can do when we come together for the benefit of others. Thank you so much for sharing your own holiday with the community. We love you! Sanctuary Candle Throughout the month of January the sanctuary candle at All Saints Church will burn to light the place of Christ s repose in loving memory of Darcy Hall Spaulding as requested by her mom. 5 Scheduled Events Always stay close to this heavenly mother, because she is the sea to be crossed to reach the shores of eternal splendor. ST. PADRE PIO In case you missed it... Last year, during one of the fundraisers for the new Catholic School, Shane Beattie won one of the prizes his choice of seats at any one of the Christmas Masses for Shane and his family decided to attend the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass at All Saints, and like any good Catholic would, he chose the last three pews in the church! But just so he wouldn t slip by unnoticed, Sandra had the pews affixed with huge red bows and gold braiding to reserve them for the family. So in case you missed it, Shane s pew with a view was decked out in festive holiday style! What was even more impressive was that Shane had held onto his winning ticket for nearly a year in order to get those coveted last few rows!! Congratulations! Respect Life Committee... Everyone is welcome to attend the Respect Life Committee Meeting on Wednesday, January 2, at 6:00 p.m. in the rectory at St. Matthew. This committee meets to discuss life issues and events and how our parish and community can make a difference in the fight for life. There is no obligation to join, but by dropping by you may find the cause for life is a ministry in which you would like to serve. Worldwide Marriage Encounter... May the peace of Christ be with you this Christmas! Savor Christ s presence in your marriage by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. 6 Weekly Readings, The Holy Family, December 30, Samuel 1: 20-22, / Psalm 84: 2-3, 5-6, 9-10 / 1 John 3: 1-2, / Luke 2: Today we are invited to reflect on what it means to be part of God s family. In the First Reading we encounter the elderly Hannah, who had been grieving over and dealing with the shame that came with having no children. In desperation she prayed to God for a son, whom she promised to consecrate to God for life, and indeed Hannah gave birth to a son. When it was time to take him to the temple at Shiloh, the family offered the appropriate sacrifice, and then Hannah this oppressed woman who had no voice spoke! Careful attention should be given to her words. In the Gospel we learn that the Holy Family went to Jerusalem for Passover. They journeyed in a caravan, because it was the safest way to travel through the countryside. On their way home, when Mary and Joseph realize that their son was not with the caravan, they return to Jerusalem in a panic, only to find him teaching the elders in the Temple. Making the situation even more bizarre, Jesus tells them, Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? In the ancient world and in some cultures today childhood stories are regarded as predictors of the child s destiny. The Second Reading invites us to reflect on our status as God s children and what it means for us when the salvation story reaches its end. The author of the First Letter of John reminds us that we are already, in this moment, children of God, but when all is fulfilled, we will experience the incomprehensible. We will see God face-to-face! 1. Carefully reread the Gospel and look for indications that Jesus was raised to be a faithful Jew. How did his parents accomplish this task? What relevance, if any, does this story have for Christians today? 2. Prayerfully reflect on the First Reading and see if you can identify with Hannah. What do you imagine she was feeling as she gave up her son? 3. What does it mean to you to be called a child of God? How does this realization affect the way you live day to day? Epiphany Party... January 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. It tells of the three magi who came to pay homage to the Christ Child in Bethlehem. These kings or wisemen brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to give to the Child. In celebration of this important event in our Christian history, there will be an Epiphany Party on January 6, immediately following the 10:30 a.m. Mass at All Saints. Everyone is invited downstairs to the church hall. You are asked to bring something to eat for everyone to share as we mingle and visit in celebration of the Christ Child. It doesn t need to be anything big. We would just like to mark this event with a potluck of meals we bring to honor each other in fellowship. We hope you will join us!
