I had so many different experiences as I wandered and wondered in Israel, I am uncertain where to begin sharing it all. I plan to prepare a PowerPoint and am actually excited about that. I have some provocative ideas about how to use my pictures and conversations and reading from my six weeks. I also, at some point will invite any interested to join me in a discussion of a book that helped me understand, in some depth, what it takes to be a peace maker. But for now, let me begin at the beginning with a wonderful story. My friend, Susan, who lives and works at a school in East Jerusalem, couldn t meet me at the airport so suggested I take the Sherut (shuttle) from the airport to the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem, where she would meet me after her day of meetings. I was dropped off into a paradise, where I had a cup of mint tea in a garden filled with tropical flowers. I couldn t afford more than soup and tea at the American Colony, but nevertheless went there often for the respite from the city streets and the spirit that pervaded the place. Its story begins with the Spafford family of Chicago. Horatio, Anna and their four daughters lost their home and business in the great fire of Chicago. Hoping it would help their healing they took a ship overseas for a European stay. Horatio stayed behind for business and would join them later. Their ship sank and all four daughters died. When Horatio sailed to meet his wife in Europe, the captain told him when they were over the place where the ship had gone down. In his room that night he wrote the well-known hymn, It is Well With My Soul. The original composition hangs on the wall of the American Colony Hotel. Here s why. Horatio and Anna went back to Chicago where they were very active in their church. A new son died of disease. Church members started to talk about how God must be punishing the Spaffords for a lack of faith. Horatio, Anna and 13 others left the church and went to Jerusalem, the Holy City, seeking to live as the early Christians lived. They rented a place inside the Old City, lived in community and served their Palestinian neighbors. Sometime after Horatio died, Anna met some Swedes who wanted to join them. Needing a larger place, they bought a beautiful Arab home, which is now the American Colony Hotel. One of the wonders of this hotel is that I often saw Israeli Jews and Palestinians dining there, sometimes meeting together. It s in the Palestinian sector of the city, but is frequented by people from everywhere. (Jackie continued )

2 It was fitting that I began my sabbatical at the American Colony, because my whole time was focused on peace making. How can we bring opposite sides together? I wandered the streets of Jerusalem for weeks watching, talking, listening, and pondering our differences and how they might be reconciled, for that is God s desire. I ended my sabbatical time in another wonderful place, Neve Shalom (Hebrew) Wa hat-a Salam (Arabic) Oasis of Peace (English). This village is also a meeting place of different peoples. Peaceful coexistence can happen. I hope you will join in this new year in exploring the path of peace making. Jackie GOOD SHEPHERD PRESCHOOL A new session of Good Shepherd Preschool will begin January 8th. We have offered this preschool to the community for many years. Eugenie Campbell started it after seeing it in another church. Eugenie is a premier Montessori teacher and was excited to find a program for children that combined the Biblical stories and the Montessori method. Many Lebanon children have experienced the goodness of this program. Mary Lasher and Jill Lane are the current teachers. Ask them if you can stop by on a Tuesday morning and see what s happening in a St Patrick s neighborhood outreach. Mary and Jill also welcome any of St Patrick s children who would like to join on Tuesday mornings from 9:15 to 11:15. MIGHT THE CHOIR BE FOR YOU? St. Patrick s choir under the excellent guidance of Damian Stout would love a few more members. If you are intimidated by the idea of sight-reading talk to Damian. He is one of the world s most patient and encouraging people. Just Around the Corner by Bill Lasher A few weeks ago, Jean Benning and I exchanged some thoughts about how and why language changes. In the year 800 CE English speakers had the word Hlaf-ward, which meant Loaf-guard. Several centuries later that had changed to laverd, meaning guardian of the loaf. By 1500 or so it had changed to lord, meaning guardian of the house, or just the guy who lords it over everyone else. We still make significant changes in our language. The simplest answer is that language is like a camera recording what s happening in the present time: first we had wall telephones with cranks, then desk phones with dials, then with buttons, followed by cell phones. These devices had in common just one thing: communication by the human voice, whether you say E.T. phone home, or I ll take a selfie with my phone. All the changes we have seen in phones have resulted from updates in the phone itself. When we change something, we will likely want to change its name. With new developments in our lives we are forced to change or adapt our language. At the same time we adapt existing words to simplify our day-to-day speech: automobile held on for a while, then was shortened to auto, and finally we came down to one syllable with car. In order to deal with this continual change, dictionary makers have settled on a 25-year cycle for their books: once a new edition of the dictionary is out, they begin a 25-year process of putting together the next one. The enormous Oxford English Dictionary (around 15 volumes) is on a 50-year cycle, trying to capture every word in British and American English. That brings us to the point where the rubber meets the road. Our language has to change as our environment changes, but we re not always ready for that change. The dictionaries are behind, our grandparents are likely behind, and school textbooks (and perhaps the teachers) may be as well. I think it helps to keep an open mind about change, in language or otherwise. Jackie

5 THANK YOU FOR HELPING US HOUSE BLESSINGS The season of Epiphany, which begins January 6 is traditionally a time for house blessings. If you are interested in a house blessing talk to Jackie. She d be happy to plan one with you. BACKGROUND ON THE ISRAELI/PALESTINIAN CONFLICT I learned firsthand how complicated the conflict is in Israel. Much of my learning was with a nonprofit organization called Telos. Their motto is Pro Israel, Pro Palestine, Pro Peace. They recognize and experience how difficult this win/win desire can be. One of the books they recommended we read before our time together was The Lemon Tree. It is in the Lebanon Public Library. If you are looking for a place to start understanding this complicated region and its history, I recommend this book. The book I plan to study together with any interested is The Anteater and the Jaguar by Rayek Rizek. He is a new friend of mine as we spent every afternoon for a week in his cafe discussing his life in Neve Shalom, Wa hat-a salam and his book. His book can be found on Amazon. EPIPHANY We are blessed with a long season of Epiphany this year. Lent does not begin until March 6! Epiphany is the season when we are reminded to look for signs of God s presence among us. Let s use the bulletin board in Brigid House to celebrate Epiphany. Photos, stories, poetry or artwork that help us see God s presence are welcome. Please contribute. Once again with the help of our congregation, our Rite 13 and J2A youth group was able to provide a great Christmas for the Interfaith families we adopted for Christmas this year. We were able to provide a great Christmas for five different families which included 13 children and 5 adults. This is one of our favorite projects of the year, and it is made possible with the help of many people who help us by buying gifts and making a cash donation. We thank everyone who helped us with this project. Also, a sincere thanks to all the congregation who helped us with the winter coat collection this year. We were able to send many warm coats to Interfaith who distributed them to needy families and anyone in the area who needed a coat this winter. Our Youth Group and Earl, Carlotta, and Mary MEN S DINNER We have changed locations for the men's group dinner. Last month we met at Reid's Sports Bar and Grill. That worked out well and we will meet there again in January. A previous Shamrock article (December) stated that we would not meet in January, but we made a change. Reid's Sports Bar is located on the south side of Main Street across from Lebanon Electric. As usual we will gather at 6:00, Thursday, January 3, We meet on each first Thursday of the month. There is no planned program but just sharing a time together, eat and chat. We generally have between 8-12 men, but we have no limit. If you are late come on in anyway. We will slide chairs around and make room for you. All men are welcome at any time; plan to join us Thursday, January 3 at 6:00. Tom Campbell Jackie IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc? 6 Elizabeth Seton Founder of the American Sisters of Charity, 1821 Elizabeth Ann Seton was the founder of Sisters of Charity, the first community of sisters native to the United States. She was also a wife, a widow, a single mother, an educator, a social activist and a spiritual leader. Elizabeth Ann was born in New York in She endured a turbulent childhood and suffered severe bouts of depression. She survived by immersing herself in poetry, piano lessons, and devoted participation in the Episcopal Church. In 1795 she married William Seton. Samuel Provoost, the first Episcopal Bishop of New York, presided. Three years later, her father-in-law died leaving her husband with the responsibility for a large family and a struggling family business and Elizabeth with a large, inherited family to care for. In 1801 the business failed and the Setons lost everything. Her husband showed the symptoms of tuberculosis and in 1803, they set sail for Italy in the hopes that the warm climate would cure his disease. The Italian authorities fearing Yellow Fever quarantined them in a cold stone hospital for the dying. William soon died and left Elizabeth Ann a young widow with five children and few resources. While in Italy, she discovered Roman Catholicism. Returning to New York, she encountered bitter opposition to her new religious leanings. With five children to support, she felt alone and estranged. She turned to Roman Catholic clergy for support and in 1805 she formally converted to Roman Catholicism. In 1806, she met Father Louis Dubourg, S.S. who wanted to start a congregation of women religious, patterned after the French Daughters of Charity. In 1809 Elizabeth Ann took vows and became Mother Seton to a small community of seven women dedicated to teaching. The sisters were given land in rural Maryland and in 1810 they opened St. Joseph s Free School to educate needy girls. The Sisters intertwined social ministry, education and religious formation in all their varied works. Mother Seton dispatched sisters to operate orphanages in Philadelphia and New York. Elizabeth Ann Seton remained the Mother of the Sisters of Charity until her death on January 4, Holy God, you blessed Elizabeth Seton with your grace as wife, mother, educator and founder, that she might spend her life in service to your people: Help us, by her example, to express our love for you in love of others; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints)
