1 St. Patrick Episcopal Church 232 East Main Street Lebanon, Ohio When our last bishop, Herbert Thompson, sent me to serve in Lebanon he said St. Patrick s was a congregation of artists! It s true. Many people in this congregation are artistic in one way or another. Being here has encouraged me to explore my own creativity. I took one more step in that endeavor this past at the John C. Campbell folk school. This time it was a drawing class. I loved it! My motivation to take that particular class was that I ve been painting as part of my prayer for a few years and I was tired of my painting being only two dimensional. I wanted to paint form as well as an image. I wanted my prayer painting to have more depth concretely as well as spiritually. So I was interested to read The Reverend Gail Greenwell s article in The Sycamore. Gail is the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral and the Sycamore is their publication. The latest issue was Spirituality and the Arts. Here s what Gail wrote in her piece. Sunday Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal Bishop of Southern Ohio The Rev. Jacqueline Matisse, Rector Lisa Cronin, Vestry, Senior Warden Bill Lasher, Vestry, Junior Warden Damian Stout, Choir Director Jack Hasty, Organist Marjorie Donovan, Music Director Emeritus Vestry Jeff Lane, Financial Secretary Trischa Goodwin Vestal Hipp Arnold Huckeby, Treasurer Steve Belknap Jill Lane Bill Lasher, Stewardship Matt Lang Linda Powers Gretchen Hautzinger, Office Manager Harry Pritchard Jill Lane, Children s Education Our Mission: To take the love of Christ into the World On a personal note, I want to mention how art has come to play an important role in my own ministry. Though I worked for more than 17 years as an interior designer in my former life, I actually have no formal training in fine arts. Four years ago, I decided to begin working with a teacher who held open studio time for local Kansas City artists. He was most gracious, kind, and encouraging to me, and under his tutelage I began to flourish in painting. When I say, flourish, I am not referring to excellence of my expression as a painter. I am very much an amateur with much still to learn. What I mean by flourish is that painting has become a time of spiritual healing and renewal for me. I feel as if I am in prayer while I paint with all the struggle, joy, and repair that prayer can bring. I believe painting has changed my preaching and my ability to imagine new possibilities - and I fell incredibly blessed to have found this new creative expression in my life. I believe that the Church, through its support of the arts, opens us up as a people to the same possibilities of healing and renewal. I mentioned in my sermon last week that many people at the Folk School were finding that creative engagement and expression was helping heal tragedies in their lives. We, at St. Patrick s, have found many ways to encourage our creativity. Let s continue to build on that legacy and explore new ways to use art of all kinds to help the healing and renewal of us all. Jackie APPLEFEST A reminder that Applefest is September 24 and we will be baking the week of the 19th. We need all the help we can get! Please come and join the fun. And it really is fun! All ages are welcome. We will also need people to sell at the event. As I wrote in last month s Shamrock we will be selling on Mulberry Street this year, a short walk from the church. We will be part of the Main Street festival and not at the Fairgrounds. We were specifically invited to this event because of our excellent reputation as pie bakers. Congratulations to all past and present bakers. DRAMA Would anybody be interested in presenting a dramatic interpretation of the gospel on an occasional Sunday morning? If so, please talk to Jackie. THANK YOU TO MUSICIANS We are always grateful to our loyal choir for their music offerings in our worship. This summer, we are also grateful to those who don t ordinarily sing in the choir but offered their musical gifts while the choir took some time off. Thank you to all. Jackie Just Around the Corner by Bill Lasher It was a good time to be in Europe: the summer was cool, the dollar was strong, and Charles de Gaulle was still a hero in France. We had finished a trip around the continent and planned to see Paris before returning home. The hotel clerk said, as we left that first morning, that this was a good day to be in Paris, and reminded us that it was, in fact, Bastille Day. He was right on both counts: we started exploring, then came to a bridge that went across the river to the Left Bank. As we crossed on the cobblestones, an enormous roar came over us. Three Mirage jets went just above our heads, trailing red, white and blue smoke. They were followed by the rest of the French air force, from the fastest to the slowest planes, and ending with a nice, quiet blimp. After all that came a loud clanking from one end of the bridge: it was a small army of tanks, halftracks and jeeps coming toward us. They were World War II-era vehicles, and the soldiers in them were wearing uniforms of the that same era. Then the girls came out dressed in period costumes as well, climbing up on the tanks to kiss the soldiers and give them flowers. It was a celebration of the liberation of Paris in 1944, with the tanks headed for the center of town. But these soldiers were the sons of those earlier heroes, and the girls were their daughters. The French were celebrating two great liberations: from the Bastille in 1789, and from the Nazis in It was a day to remember! When you think about it, however, such days actually recognize only the beginning of a struggle, as with Bastille Day and Independence Day. They originally celebrated only a hope that things would get better and they did. These are really corner-turning days, when the fortunes of a whole country could change overnight. Most of us have had at least one such day in our lives, and I think St. Patrick s may have had two. Not counting St. Patrick s Day, the day of the first meeting to plan this church, there is certainly the day we moved to East and Main, into a proper place for a church. The second was when we finished building Brigid House, just over twenty years ago. It was the beginning of our modern church, and we needed to celebrate that. As it turned out, our celebration came the next spring, with the first 100,000 Welcomes. Not surprisingly for our church, it did several things at once. It was a fundraiser, because we certainly needed the money; it was a way to introduce ourselves to the rest of the community, especially in its early years. Finally, it pulled most of our congregation into the celebration in one role or another as donors, workers, guests, or some combination of those three. It is our annual celebration day, our Day of Welcomes. This spring we celebrate our Twentieth 100,000 Welcomes, and I hope you will be a part of that event.

5 RITE 13 J2A FALL COAT DRIVE 2016 Our Rite 13 and J2A class will be collecting coats again this fall and winter to help Interfaith Hospitality distribute coats to needy families again this year. We again hope our St. Patrick s families will help us with this project. For the past few years, we have done a great job of helping those in our communities who need a warm coat for the winter. Please check with your families to help us collect coats for these folks. We will start collecting coats in late October. Thanks again for all the support our families have given to this project. Earl Edmonds and Carlotta Owens NEW PIANO We are thankful to Hewett and MaryAnn Mulford for the donation of the grand piano that is now in our sanctuary. The piano is approximately 100 years old. It was acquired by Hewett from Carol Horst in the '70s. Hewett's grandmother, May Probasco Mulford studied piano at CCM and she and her husband, John Q Mulford, belonged to the Presbyterian church that was in the building St. Patrick's currently occupies. We don't believe the piano donated ever belonged to Hewett's grandmother. Interestingly when Carol Horst owned the piano her brother, Calvin Hampton (a very gifted church musician), transcribed many familiar piano pieces to the organ using this piano. He subsequently published an album. Many of Calvin Hampton's hymns are in our hymnal! Check them out, they're numbers 403, 407, 456, 469 and 659. Lisa Cronin MEN S DINNER The Men s Dinner will be early this month. The first Thursday will be Sept 1. So, the men s dinner will be on Thursday, Sept 1. We will meet at Docs at 6:00. Please join us there. Tom Campbell IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc? If so, please contact Theresa Norris, September In-Reach Ministry coordinator. Her contact information can be found in the Church Directory or by calling St. Patrick s.

6 RUMMAGE SALE Another good year for St. Pat s rummage sale. Fun was had by all. Thank you to all of you who rose to the occasion whether donating items, spending time working during the week, and/or for those who donated food and drinks for the volunteers. Kudos to the ladies who organized the clothing section. They worked nonstop to get the tables and clothing racks in tip top shape and ready to go. What would we do without them. We realized $ and a future online sale will hopefully bring us close to $ Our rummage sale is so important because it benefits the community in so many ways. Thanks again to everyone. The Martyrs of New Guinea New Guinea, the second largest island in the world, is still one of the main frontiers of Christian mission, because of its difficult terrain and the cultural diversity of its peoples, who speak some 500 distinct languages. Christian missionaries first began work there in the 1860s and 1870s, with only limited success. The Anglican mission began in 1891, and the first bishop was consecrated in During World War II, the suffering of missionaries and of native people was severe. This feast day, observed in the Diocese of New Guinea and in many dioceses of the Church of Australia, marks the witness of eight missionaries and two Papuan martyrs, who were betrayed by non-christians to the Japanese invaders. But the day also includes remembrances of the faith and devotion of Papuan Christians of all Churches, who risked their own lives to care for the wounded, and to save the lives of many who otherwise would have perished. Your crew, Jan Delzell, Theresa Norris, Diane Ulrich, and Dianne Knapp HOME WORK CLUB Jean and Larry Benning have resigned from Home Work Club. Danielle Weaver and Anna Estrada have replaced them. Both were former teachers. Home Work Club will begin on September 27. Please continue your wonderful support of this worthwhile program. Almighty God, we remember before you this day the blessed martyrs of New Guinea, who, following the example of their Savior, laid down their lives for their friends; and we pray that we who honor their memory may imitate their loyalty and faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints) Jean Benning
