ANDREW S CELEBRATING OUR PAST SHAPING OUR FUTURE Volume 28 Number 1 St. Andrew s Episcopal Church, Lake Worth, Florida January 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This month marks the start of my twelfth year here at St. Andrew s I must say the past eleven years have been quite fulfilling and I have great hopes that this one will be as well. I also must add that each one seems to fly by faster than the previous one! Much has happened over these past eleven years. We have joined P.E.A.C.E. and with a number of other congregations of various denominations work to make Palm Beach County a more just community in which to live. Each year we see evidence of how people joining together to improve the lives of those who often have no voice in the halls of power. Thanks to efforts of you all, we have a vibrant series of concerts throughout the year coupled with other special events. Along with hearing many talented musicians and singers, we are able to reach out to the community and folks who are not members of our congregations. While the Way Café was originally the ministry of the Methodist Church, it is now ours and works hard to feed hungry folk in our midst. This is also due to the hard work of many of you. Our own choir and music program has grown and improved by leaps and bounds. We are blessed to be led in worship and song by so many talented people. I have been a priest in this diocese for over 39 years. I have served in several congregations. They have all been filled with Christian men, women and children who work hard to serve the Lord. I have to say, though, that you all work harder and longer than any of them to be the disciples Jesus has called us to be. I am honored to serve in this place and I look forward to this year ahead. May God continue to bless and guide each and every one of us as we strive to see Him more clearly, love Him more dearly, and follow Him more nearly. Day by day! ANNUAL PARISH MEETING We will hold our Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday, January 22nd at 11:15AM at which time we will elect three persons to the Vestry for three year terms and also distribute the budget for We are grateful to Mary Kay Murray, Donna Bragel, and Doug Randolph for the three years of faithful service. BIBLE STUDY.A study of the Gospel of John will begin on Wednesday, January 11th at 7:00PM. No tests, no intimidation, no experts here, no question or comment is stupid or irrelevant. We are learning together and from each other. It will be serious but light-hearted. Laughing is NOT prohibited. If you plan to attend, please contact Dick Lewallen at lewrw@yahoo.com or in order to plan for space and materials. VESTRY NEWS Our next meeting is on Tuesday, January 24th at 7PM. This will be an organizational meeting as we welcome newly elected members. A reminder that our financials are posted on the Bulletin Board in the Parish Hall hallway each month. O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully upon the couples who are celebrating their anniversaries this month and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor the vows they have made through Jesus Christ, our savior. Amen. JANUARY ANNIVERSARIES 19 Barbara and Thomas Franklin WAY CAFÉ The feeding Program at Holy Redeemer Episcopal Church is every Saturday of each month. We need to have 12 volunteers each Saturday at 12:30PM. We are grateful that this program will continue to feed hungry people in our community. Call Joy Bayrouty if you can help ( ). JANUARY TAIZE WORSHIP On the third Saturday of January our 6pm service offers the beauty of contemplative Taize music with healing prayers and communion. All are invited and welcome. AN AFTERNOON WITH LANGSTON HUGHES Help commemorate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday with the Core Ensemble s presentation of An Afternoon with Langston Hughes. Langston was a prominent member of the Harlem Renaissance. The performance is at 3pm on Sunday, January 15th and the program is free and open to the public. The Feast of the Epiphany The name Epiphany is derived from a Greek word meaning manifestation or appearing. Anglican Prayer Books interpret the word with an alternative title, The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. The last phrase, of course, is a reference to the story of the Wise Men from the East. The feast combined commemorations of the visit of the Magi, led by the star of Bethlehem; the Baptism of Jesus in the waters of the River Jordan; and Jesus first recorded miracle, the changing of water into wine at the marriage of Cana of Galilee all thought of as manifestations of the incarnate Lord.

3 St. Andrew s News & Notes Page 3 JUSTICE MINISTRY Calling all committed and potential Network members to our parish meeting on Tuesday, January 24th at 7pm. This is an important gathering to update you on our issues, to begin thinking about who you will bring to the Action, and hear about how to invest in our justice ministry work. Our next big get together is the Rally on Monday, March 13th at 7PM. Nehemiah Action on Monday, April 3rd at 7PM. THANK YOU NOTE Dear Friends and family of St. Andrew s, A heartfelt thanks for the wonderful Clergy appreciation card and gift we received. It is a privilege and honor to serve this congregation. Father Chuck and Father Paul LAKE WORTH LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES You may have noticed that we now have one of the Lake Worth Little Free Libraries on our property. This wonderful project is meant to encourage us all, young and old, to read more. The idea is: Take a Book Leave a Book There are dozens of these existing and proposed around the city. Open a book and our world is expanded! YOGA CLASSES Yoga classes are now being held on Monday and Wednesday at 6:15 at a new location: Move is at th Avenue North, Suite Check out the website at STEWARDSHIP 2017 We are blessed with the number of folk who have submitted Pledge Cards for the mission of St. Andrew s for The total pledged at this time is $191,611. Our budget goal for 2017 is $222,000. As you can see, we are short of our goal. The Vestry is hopeful that there are still some of us who have yet to submit a pledge. If you are one of those people, we implore you to give prayerful thought to your commitment to our work here and in our community. The reality is that we cannot do the work God has called us to do without the financial support of each one of us. May you all be blessed in the coming new year. INTEGRITY OF PALM BEACH January Meeting Integrity Palm Beach, a parish activity open to all, invites everyone to join us on the second Saturday, of each month at 7:00PM. Integrity-Palm Beach is the first and only chapter of Integrity in Palm Beach County. Throughout its ten years of existence, it has welcomed a number of speakers and guest clergy at monthly meetings. Integrity has also been a consistent presence in the community, inviting all people into the life of St. Andrew s and thereby fulfilling the parish s stated mission: To Share the Love of Christ in Word and Deed with all God s Children. Our next meeting will be on Saturday, January 14th following the 6PM service. Potluck supper and program by Craig Glover, President of A Better Way Home Care. MEALS ON WHEELS The Meals on Wheels program is growing in the Lake Worth area and more volunteers are needed. The commitment is to deliver meals to homebound seniors one day a week. Call Debbie Emerick at to volunteer of get further information. YOUTH NEWS Remember that our Youth will be sponsoring Souper Bowl Sunday during the first weekend of February. Donations will help support our local feeding program. ANNUAL CLERGY RETREAT The annual retreat for clergy will take place from Tuesday, January 10th through Thursday, January 12th at the Duncan Center in Delray Beach. This is an important time for our clergy to get spiritual refreshment in preparation for the seasons of Lent and Easter.

The deadline for notes and/or announcements for the Sunday Bulletin is Wednesday at noon. If it is after noon, you can leave a message on the church telephone, or leave an at saepiscopal@aol.com. The bulletin is printed on Thursday and the wonderful Church Ladies come in and fold and stuff them on Friday mornings. Keep in mind that the Prayer request list will begin anew each month. If you want the prayer requests to stay on the list for longer, just indicate that when getting the information to the office. The newsletter deadline for the February newsletter is January 20th. If you know of any events you would like to put in the newsletter or articles of interest, please them to the office. The Altar flower memorial and bequest form is in the Parish Hall.
