1 St. Patrick Episcopal Church 232 East Main Street Lebanon, Ohio Alleluia, He is Risen...The Lord is Risen Indeed! It s always a palpable relief to enter the Easter season. I really do appreciate the introspective, confessional nature of Lent. I always grow spiritually in Lent through the Lenten classes and Holy Week. I read once that somewhere in the derivation of the word Lent is the word spring and that Lent is a time of spring cleaning. It does feel that way. We clean the clutter out of closets, open the windows and let fresh air in. Spiritually, that s the Wind of the Spirit, creating new possibilities; bringing forth new life out of whatever kind of death we may experience. I share two images today that speak of the Easter Spirit. The first is a poem by Wendell Berry. The second is from a conversation I just had with someone who saw our mosaic Jesus in the sanctuary for the first time. Sunday Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal Bishop of Southern Ohio The Rev. Jacqueline Matisse, Rector Lisa Cronin, Vestry, Senior Warden Bill Lasher, Vestry, Junior Warden Damian Stout, Choir Director Jack Hasty, Organist Marjorie Donovan, Music Director Emeritus Vestry Jeff Lane, Financial Secretary Trischa Goodwin Vestal Hipp Wayne Spary, Treasurer Steve Belknap Jill Lane Bill Lasher, Stewardship Matt Lang Linda Powers Gretchen Hautzinger, Office Manager Harry Pritchard Jill Lane, Children s Education Our Mission: To take the love of Christ into the World A Purification At start of spring I open a trench in the ground. I put into it the winter s accumulation of paper, pages I do not want to read again, useless words, fragments, errors. And I put into it the contents of the outhouse: light of the sun, growth of the ground, finished with one of their journeys. To the sky, to the wind, then, and to the faithful trees, I confess my sins: that I have not been happy enough, considering my good luck; have listened to too much noise; have been inattentive to wonders; have lusted after praise. And then upon the gathered refuse of mind and body, I close the trench, folding shut again the dark, the deathless earth. Beneath that seal the old escapes into the new ( continued )

2 On seeing the mosaic, she commented, It s incredible! I ve always wanted to do mosaic art. I love the idea of smashing old plates, getting rid of all the old frustration and then creating something new and beautiful from the old. A joyful Easter to you all. May new possibility abound. FLIGHT OF THE BUTTERFLY Those of you who were in church the Sunday after Easter heard Damian Stout play a piece on the piano as the offertory anthem. I want you to know that he wrote that song and dedicated it to St. Patrick s. It was inspired by a couple of butterflies he saw roaming around St. Patrick s memorial garden. As you most likely know, the butterfly is a symbol of resurrection and of endurance, hope, love and life. Thank you, Damian, for this delightful piece! A FEW NOTES ON ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND WELCOMES We still have tickets left for our event May 6th. We d love to sell out. We also want to draw your attention to a few auction items. We have a few houses in the auction and know bidding on them may require some forethought on your part. And you might want to discuss these opportunities with friends. One is the Rittgers house on Kiawah Island in South Carolina. This is a three-bedroom house. The golfing is apparently wonderful. It is a twelve-minute bike ride from the beach. It is on a lagoon and has a pool. There will be a minimum bid requirement of $2500 for a Saturday to Saturday any week in September or October. There might possibly be some other dates. The other house belongs to Jill Lane s parents and is Cave Run Lake in the Daniel Boone Forest in Kentucky. This offer is available any time for any length of time. (within reason!) The third option is two nights at The Springs Retreat Center outside Oldenburg, Indiana. s friends, Dick and Sibyl Towner own The Springs. This is a lovely spot for an individual retreat, a group gathering or a family. Each cabin can sleep 6 and has a kitchen. Time would depend on when it had an available cabin. There is a small lake and hiking trails. Dick and Sibyl will contribute a dinner with them in their home if they are there when you come. These items are not limited to those at the dinner so we wanted to get the word out! Just Around the Corner by Bill Lasher At first it was just odd, seeing the Master of Ceremonies there in his white dinner jacket, standing just in front of the altar. It was like a clash of cultures: church on the one hand, fancy dinner party on the other. This was a new thing for St. Patrick s, and I, for one, was busy adjusting to it. Even the name was different: One Hundred Thousand Welcomes! Twenty years ago, that sounded almost well, Celtic and it was! The circumstances of this odd evening were compelling, and they had come at us from every direction. First, St. Patrick s Church was growing up, and it needed more space, beginning with a real parish hall. (The original hall was the small area at the back of our present church the one with the modern, square pews.) It also needed a kitchen larger than the one in the basement, which looked more like a motor-home kitchenette.) For years, the church had no place to expand, but at last we were able to buy the house next door and begin planning what would become Brigid House. A real parish hall with a real kitchen would change many things: we could expand Sunday School, the nursery, and even regular events, like classes and dinners, into this new space. In fact, it was only a few weeks after someone uttered the word dinner that a committee began to plan for a new kind of event at St. Patrick s. It had at least three goals: to introduce members of this community to our refurbished church, to raise money to help pay for all that work, and most importantly to fund a number of outreach programs which we could carry out in Brigid House, from the Homework Club to Interfaith Hospitality and beyond. With both space and funding, we would really shine! What sort of an evening was it twenty years ago, at that first One Hundred Thousand Welcomes? It was a lot like our event today, only a little unsure of itself. Our Master of Ceremonies, Bill Donovan, was a band director by trade, so he knew how to conduct himself around music and theater, and Boz Russell has always been our consummate auctioneer, but most of us were new to this kind of thing. The range of items brought in for auction was huge, because no one knew what would catch the bidders fancy. In the long run, everything went well: we were successful enough to begin planning another event for the following year. We did discover some interesting facts about large fund-raising events. It takes about as many people to put on the event as we have invited to attend it, and setting up and taking down takes even more time than all the hours spent at the event itself. At the same time, everyone at the event will meet someone new, find out something important, or buy something they really want. In the name of charity that s not a bad score. As we have all learned: If you build it, they will come and they will enjoy it.

5 SPECIAL SHOW BY THE CRAZY LADIES Mary Ellen Haynes saw this show and highly recommended we bring it to St. Patrick s. The Crazy Ladies are Sherry McCamley, Erin McCamley, and Cathy Springfield. They are professional performers who have put together an interactive, entertaining musical that educates, uplifts, and inspires audiences to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. They will be performing their musical at St. Patrick s on Wednesday, May 24 at 7:30pm. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted that evening. There is a brochure with more information about the group on the bulletin board in Brigid House and on the Webpage and Facebook. Please join in this evening and consider who else might benefit from the topic. 100,000 WELCOMES We need your help! There is still a little time to get any auction donations to the committee for 100,000 Welcomes but we need your items before Wednesday, May 3. Please bring them to Bridget House. At the time this was written, there were a few more tickets available for this event. If you would like to attend, please call. This is always a great event and it couldn't be as successful as it is without all your help! Nancy Smith MEN S DINNER GROUP IS MAKING A CHANGE FOR MAY In the recent past, we have been meeting at Doc's on Mulberry. A new place is opening in the building where Mio's was before they went out of business. The name of the new place is Barrel House and they will feature 25+ Craft Beers on tap and a wide range of light food. They are expected to open 4/27 and should be available for the next Men s' Group dinner on May 4. They are expecting us to join them at 6:00, Thursday, May 4. Barrel House is on Broadway across from Berry School. All men are welcome to attend. We just eat and have chatter. There is no specific program so there is no reason irregular attendance causes a problem as in missing a class. Please plan on joining us. Tom Campbell Athanasius Bishop of Alexandria, 373 Rarely in the history of the Church has the course of its development been more significantly determined by one person than it was by Athanasius in the fourth century. Gregory of Nazianzus called him the pillar of the Church, and Basil the Great said he was the God-given physician of her wounds. Athanasius was born about 295 in Alexandria, and was ordained deacon in 319. He quickly attracted attention by his opposition to the presbyter Arius, whose denial of the full divinity of the Second Person of the Trinity was gaining widespread acceptance. Alexander, the Bishop of Alexandria, took Athanasius as his secretary and adviser to the first Ecumenical Council, at Nicaea in 325, which dealt with the Arian conflict. Athanasius was successful in winning approval for the phrase in the Nicene Creed which has ever since been recognized as expressing unequivocally the full godhead of the Son: of one Being with the Father (homoousios). When Alexander died in 328, Athanasius became bishop. He fearlessly defended the Nicene Christology against emperors, magistrates, bishops, and theologians. Five times he was sent into exile. He often seemed to stand alone for the orthodox faith. Athanasius contra mundum (against the world) became a by-word. Yet, by the time of his last exile, his popularity among the citizens of Alexandria was so great that the Emperor had to recall him to avoid insurrection in the city. Athanasius wrote voluminously: biblical interpretation, theological exposition, sermons, and letters. His treatise, On the Incarnation of the Word of God, is a still widely read classic. In it, he writes, The Savior of us all, the Word of God, in his great love took to himself a body and moved as Man among men, meeting their senses, so to speak, half way. He became himself an object for the senses, so that those who were seeking God in sensible things might apprehend the Father through the works he, the Word of God, did in the body. Human and human-minded as men were, therefore, to whichever side they looked in the sensible world, they found themselves taught the truth. Uphold your Church, O God of truth, as you upheld your servant Athanasius, to maintain and proclaim boldly the catholic faith against all opposition, trusting solely in the grace of your eternal Word, who took upon himself our humanity that we might share his divinity; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints) IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc?
