1 St. Patrick Episcopal Church 232 East Main Street Lebanon, Ohio I m reading a book in preparation for my upcoming sabbatical called The Soul of a Pilgrim by Christine Valters Paintner. I commend it to you as it addresses both an outward and inward journey. The book s opening quote is To journey without being changed is to be a nomad. To change without journeying is to be a chameleon. To journey and be transformed by the journey is to be a pilgrim. Sunday Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal Bishop of Southern Ohio The Rev. Jacqueline Matisse, Rector Nancy Smith, Vestry, Senior Warden Todd Rockstroh, Vestry, Junior Warden Damian Stout, Choir Director Damian Stout, Organist Marjorie Donovan, Music Director Emeritus Vestry Jeff Lane, Financial Secretary Trischa Goodwin Kellie Snigar Wayne Spary, Treasurer Steve Belknap Jill Lane Bill Lasher, Stewardship Matt Lang Linda Powers Gretchen Hautzinger, Office Manager Harry Pritchard Jill Lane, Children s Education Our Mission: To take the love of Christ into the World Transformation requires an openness to learn from the unexpected, whether far from or close to home. Every year on our summer youth trip I tell the story of the peregrinatio. This is the word for the Celtic monks early pilgrimages. It isn t easily defined. It has the sense of wandering for the love of God. The best picture of the peregrinatio is setting out to sea in a small boat with no rudder. The sailor trusts the Spirit will take him or her on a journey that will take them deeper into God s love. Growing in God s love is the ultimate destination. This has set the tone for our youth trips. I say honestly that there is no complaining. We go into an unknown situation and everyone does their best to be Christ s love wherever we find ourselves. This is true, not only at the worksite, but also back at the church where we stay. I believe we are pilgrims on these trips. I believe we are transformed by the journey. I think I can speak for the other adults as well as myself when I say I am so very grateful to travel alongside our young pilgrims on our journey into God s love. And I am grateful for the early Celtic monks commitment to the peregrinatio which helps inform our lives at St. Patrick s. Sunday mornings in September, after Labor Day, I will lead a discussion on The Soul of a Pilgrim at 9:30am in Brigid House. Jackie

2 Just Around the Corner by Bill Lasher JACKIE S VACATION IN AUGUST Jackie will be away from August 6-11 and August 26-September 3. The only Sunday she will be gone is September 2. The Rev. Elaine Silverstrum will celebrate and preach on that day. SABBATICAL PLANS I am grateful beyond words for the opportunity to have a sabbatical in October and November. I pray this experience will be transformative. I go in the spirit of a pilgrim! And I am eager to share it with you as I can. I am considering ways to be in touch while I am away and plan to do a teaching series about the experience after my return. I have finalized six weeks of housing in and around Jerusalem. I looked for places and experiences that will help me focus on peacemaking. One week I will travel with The Telos Group, whose purpose is to help Christian leaders grow in peacemaking skills. Our itinerary includes a dinner with an orthodox rabbi s family and a trip to an Israeli settlement as well as a day in a Palestinian refugee camp and an evening at a Palestinian sustainable farm. That gives you a sense of the experience. I will also be spending time at a Roman Catholic convent on the Via Delarosa, a Lutheran guest house on the Mt. of Olives and in a German community outside Jerusalem committed to teaching and practicing reconciliation. I will have some time with my friend Susan Shadid working with her on a peace curriculum for grades k-12 and a few days with a pilgrimage sponsored by the Diocese of S. Ohio. I am going to Masada and to Petra in Jordan with that group. I am now working on finding supply clergy for the two months. I m glad you will have the opportunity to hear some different voices. I will make arrangements for people to cover emergencies if necessary. My preference is that you have none while I am gone! I pray this will be a pilgrimage for us all. Jackie How do angels know? asked the professor, who was teaching a class in Logic to a group of college freshmen. We had no idea. The class went on for an hour, during which our professor did what he really planned to do: talk about how we know still a difficult topic, but he did have our attention. At the end of the period, he asked the question again, and we still had no answer. It s easy, he said. Angels know everything immediately, without needing to figure it out. Thus ended the class. I recalled this lecture while reading Dan Brown s recent book, Origin. It s a mystery novel, and the best way to define such a book is to say that knowing is delayed for a long time in the book, and there is a great deal of thinking required at least of us humans before we know the truth. At the same time, I think of two other experiences that require some serious thought: Jackie s sermons, which open up the meaning of 2,000-year-old texts, and political reporting, where information comes in on so many channels, and from all kinds of sources, and we are left putting together a jigsaw puzzle to get at the truth. All of this is about contemporary events: what happens if we look at our long-term understanding of our own lives, or of our country s history? In fact, I think it s harder to teach the historical background to an idea, a book, or even a whole field than it is to explain a new idea. For example, you need to know that the word you was only used as a plural in early English, slowly becoming singular and plural in the past few hundred years. For example, if I say You need to show your permit to a group of people, it will be taken as a request of everyone--unless I point at one particular person. Today we have many ways to make you a plural, such as using you all, y all, youuns, or youse. These are dialect forms created to make it clear that the you is plural. Shakespeare never had that problem: he either wrote you or thou, for plural and singular, respectively. What we all do is simply focus on what we need to know and what we want to know about. We talk about Information Processing as a computer-based phenomenon, but the processing that matters is going on in ourselves. Knowing the right answers, as well as the right questions, is what keeps us going. As Robert Pirsig says at the end of his book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: The motorcycle you re really working on is yourself.

5 WELCOME NEW EPISCOPALIANS When our bishop, Tom Breidenthal was with us, the following people officially joined the Episcopal church and reconfirmed their baptismal vows. Welcome to Shelly Kilgallon, Adam Lane, Danielle Weaver, Paola Estrada, Judy Swanson, Veronica Strevel, Tyler Land and Luke Thota. I have been asked when the next opportunity for this step is. Joining the Episcopal Church only happens at the bishop s visitation which is every year and sometimes not for two years. Being a member of St. Patrick s does not require a bishop s blessing or a sacramental act. When you are actively participating in the life of St. Patrick s you are a member! BUNCO Summer is a busy time! Due to vacations and other things happening, Bonnie and I decided to postpone the Bunco evening we had planned for July. We will look for another date this fall. Thanks for your understanding and keep this in mind for September or October! EMERGENCY OPERATING PLAN The vestry in accordance with a diocesan mandate has been in conversation about an emergency operating plan for St. Patrick s. Interestingly this conversation came up in vestry the day before Bishop Breidenthal informed all congregations of their need to develop a plan. The Bishop explained in his communication that places of worship have been sanctuaries throughout history and that we need to do all in our power to maintain them as safe places. None of us like that society has come to a place where this necessitates a plan, but we do want the church to be a safe place. To that end, the wardens and I have met with Captain Dave Gehringer, the Lebanon police officer who is assisting many churches in this endeavor. Vestry has reviewed the plan Captain Gehringer s church adopted. The diocese will also be sending out a template. The plan will cover actions to be taken in case of any emergency, including violent weather, and medical emergencies, as well as the presence of an active shooter. Captain Gehringer will help lead us in an awareness session at a date yet to be determined in September. We are waiting now for his summary of his walk through St. Patrick s. This is not intended to heighten fear or encourage reactivity. That is the last thing we want to do! It is a response to a societal reality and an effort to prepare us to respond calmly and effectively in any emergency. Jackie FUNDRAISING As you know, we did not have a rummage sale this year. We lost our co-chairmen and no one else wanted to do it or had the time, so it was decided to not have one this year. We do need to have something to take its place and there are some ideas floating around out there! If you would like to get involved in this, (not just chairing the event!), please let me know! We have a group of people who will be discussing what it next! Nancy Smith IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc? If so, please contact Theresa Norris, August In-Reach Ministry coordinator. Her contact information can be found in the Church Directory or by calling St. Patrick s.

6 William Edward Burghardt DuBois Sociologist, 1963 ALTAR GUILD HELP NEEDED We are in great need of more help with Altar duties. We are especially in need of people to change the Altar between the 8:00 and 10:30 services. Please contact Molly Wolford for more information. Molly Wolford MEN S DINNER Men s Dinner comes quickly again this month. We will meet Thursday, August 2, at 6:00 at the "Blackhorse Tavern". As we have said many times, all men are welcome. We usually have a mix of guys, some old timers and some new guys. Normally we have 8-16 but we will be sure that all who come will be worked into the table. We chat and just visit until a little after 7:15 but you may stay as long as you can talk anyone else to stay. William Edward Burghardt DuBois was born in 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. As a young man he had already developed a deep concern for the advancement of his race, and at 15, he began to advocate for black Americans in his capacity as the local correspondent for the New York Globe. In 1896, following the completion of his doctoral degree, Dubois received a fellowship to conduct research in the seventh ward slums of Philadelphia. His work with the urban black population there marked the first scientific approach to sociological study, and for that reason, Dubois is hailed as the father of Social Science. In 1903, while teaching at Atlanta University, he published his book The Souls of Black Folks, in which he outlined his philosophical disagreement with important figures such as Booker T. Washington, who argued that Black people should forego political equality and civil rights and focus instead on industrial evolution. DuBois believed instead in the higher education of a talented tenth whose education would naturally help other African Americans achieve. In 1906, he sought others to aid him in his efforts toward organized determination and aggressive action on the part of men who believe in Negro freedom and growth. The result was the so-called Niagara Movement (named for the group s first meeting site, which was shifted to Canada when they were prevented from meeting in the U.S.), the objectives of which were to advocate civil justice and oppose discrimination. In 1909, most of the group members merged with white supporters and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed. DuBois advanced his causes, sometimes at odds with the white leadership of the NAACP, in the magazine Crisis. A leading participant in several Pan-African meetings, DuBois renounced his American citizenship and moved to Ghana, where he died in 1963, on the eve of the March on Washington. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote of DuBois, His singular greatness lay in his quest for truth about his own people. There were very few scholars who concerned themselves with honest study of the black man and he sought to fill the immense void. Join us Tom Campbell Gracious God, we thank you for the witness of William Edward Burghardt DuBois, passionate prophet of civil rights, whose scholarship advanced the dignity of the souls of black folk; and we pray that we, like him, may use our gifts to do justice in the Name of Jesus Christ our Liberator and Advocate; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God for ever and ever. Amen. (Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints)
