1 St. Patrick Episcopal Church 232 East Main Street Lebanon, Ohio In this article I m going to relay a series of quotes from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They met a few years ago to celebrate their 80th birthdays and invited journalist Douglas Abrams to record their week together. He published this time with them in the book, The Book of Joy. I quote from the chapter Despair: The World Is in Such Turmoil. Abrams: People all over the world wanted to know how they could possibly live with joy in a world so filled with sorrow and suffering. Tutu: You show your humanity, by how you see yourself not as apart from others but from your connection to others. I have frequently wept about the worlds sorrow and suffering. God created us and said, Go now, my child. You have freedom. And God has such an incredible reverence for that freedom that God would much rather we went freely to hell than compel us to come to heaven. Yes we are capable of the most awful atrocities.and it is good also to remember that we have a fantastic capacity for goodness. Sunday Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal Bishop of Southern Ohio The Rev. Jacqueline Matisse, Rector Nancy Smith, Vestry, Senior Warden Todd Rockstroh, Vestry, Junior Warden Damian Stout, Choir Director Damian Stout, Organist Marjorie Donovan, Music Director Emeritus Vestry Jeff Lane, Financial Secretary Trischa Goodwin Kellie Snigar Wayne Spary, Treasurer Steve Belknap Jill Lane Bill Lasher, Stewardship Matt Lang Linda Powers Gretchen Hautzinger, Office Manager Harry Pritchard Jill Lane, Children s Education Our Mission: To take the love of Christ into the World Tutu: What can you do to help change that situation? start where you are and do what you can where you are. And yes, be appalled. It would be awful if we looked on all of that horrendousness and we said, Ah, it doesn t really matter. It s so wonderful that we can be distressed. It s incredible just how compassionate and generous people can be you know human beings are basically good. That s where we have to start. Anything that swerves away from that is the exception. Dalai Lama: I think you re right. When bad things happen they become news, and it is easy to feel like our basic human nature is to kill or to rape or to be corrupt. Then we can feel that there is not much hope for our future. All these things happen, but they are unusual, which is why they become news. There are millions and millions of children who are loved by their parents every day.but this is so common that none of it becomes news.yes, there are very negative things, but at the same time there are many more positive things happening in our world. We must have a sense of proportion and a wider perspective. Dalai Lama: (his response to a violent crisis) During my meditation, I actually visualized some of those Chinese local authorities and did one of our practices, called tonglen, literally meaning giving and taking. I tried to take on their fear, anger, suspicion, and to give them my love, my forgiveness. It was a good opportunity to practice forgiveness and compassion. May we be encouraged by the wisdom of these two men, who have known great suffering and know joy. Jackie

2 THE SOUL OF A PILGRIM Beginning Sunday, September 9, I will lead a discussion on the book, The Soul of a Pilgrim, Eight Practices for the Journey Within, on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:15 in Brigid House. I read this book in preparation for my upcoming sabbatical and want to pass on some of its teachings. SUMMER FINANCES All churches I know, fall short on their pledges during the summer months. We are currently $11,000 short on pledges for the year. This is not unusual and there is no panic, but please be reminded if you have been away this summer, to catch up on your pledge. Thank you very, very much. Every contribution that keeps our ministry alive is blessed and appreciated. HOMEWORK CLUB Every Thursday afternoon, we open our doors to school children from Shadow Lake Trailer Park in Lebanon. For an hour we help them with homework, provide a snack and give them lots of TLC. Danielle Weaver is doing a great job leading this group and building community among them. Tutors are always welcomed. High School students can earn their service points. The more we can offer one on one help the better the program is. We will start this year, Thursday, September 18. FEAST AND FALLY Lebanon s annual Feast and Fally is Saturday, September 29 th. We have reserved our usual spot and will be baking pies the week before and selling on Saturday. Bill Hardie and Lisa Cronin are coordinating our efforts. A signup sheet will be up soon. This is a great community effort and always fun. Pies are baked in assembly line fashion at the church or you can bake at home. All ages are can participate in everything. It s a great intergenerational week! We need bakers, wrappers, kitchen supervisors and sellers. Some people come to town just for the pies baked by the church. Please be a part! Just Around the Corner by Bill Lasher I have lived in 10 cities and towns in 5 states, in 21 houses and apartments, and have gone to 10 schools. I thought that was a little unusual until I discovered that my neighbor has lived in 4 houses (he has the four pictures on his basement wall), in 1 state, gone to 4 schools (including a Master s degree), and lived in one town and one city. On a cumulative count, I m ahead, 46 to 11, but I m not sure that means I m winning: we need connection and community. On the other hand, I have had one significant long-term experience, at St. Patrick s, and that feels like home. All churches, including ours, are viewed differently by people with different backgrounds. It was hard to discuss our church with some academics, for example; I think they hear the word church and think of a tall brick facade with a door in it. Once you go through that door, you are in a different world, with beliefs and practices they don t really want to think about. On the other hand, there are some families who need help just to survive from week to week; without going through that door they assume that churches are looking for contributions, rather than offering a place of peace and concern for people who need help. What I learned from moving around a great deal in your life is this: you will see and hear very different things in different areas. That s really one reason I became a linguist: everywhere I went there was a different dialect, and I found that fascinating. More important than that is this: when you move around enough, you become a little less intimidated by opening doors. You learn more that way, and you especially learn about people that way. Opening the door to St. Patrick s for the first time was like moving once more, only this time to a group of people who had become a warm, welcoming community. Here s one more thought about moving around and taking roots that may not go as deep as we would like. I am reminded of working with a tool, like a knife. A whetstone can be used in two ways, to sharpen the knife or, if the knife is dragged at a 90-degree angle, to dull the knife. A journey is like that: you have a choice: stay outside, or open the door. Jackie

5 RITE 13 AND J2A CLASS Our Rite 13 and J2A class will begin this year on Sunday, September 16 th. Earl Edmonds, Carlotta Owens, and Mary Lasher will be leading these classes again this year. We look forward to welcoming any new students to our group as well as the students who have been with us over the last few years. We meet every Sunday after our church breakfast at 9:30. We are looking forward to another great year. YOUTH GROUP MISSION TRIP FOLLOW-UP After our mission trip to North Carolina this past June, we have established a relationship with the family that we helped during our journey. We have stayed in contact with Mrs. Phillips, her daughter, and her two grandchildren since our visit to their home. Kacee Gluntz did a great job writing about our mission trip in the July Shamrock and the work that we did for Mrs. Phillips. During that experience, all of us became aware of a serious problem that Mrs. Phillips had with roaches in her home. After returning home, we have been able to help her with this by having an exterminator treat her home with three treatments over the summer to help eliminate this issue. This mission trip was really special not only because of the work we accomplished, but even more so because of the relationship we developed with this family. Earl Edmonds MEN S DINNER The Men s Dinner Group will meet again on the first Thursday, September 6 th, 6:00 p.m. at Blackhorse Tavern. Our last group was 9 men and we had conversations on cosmic theories, i.e. dark space, neutrinos, etc. Politics is normally forbidden. Let s see what develops this month. Hope to see you there. Tom Campbell IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc? If so, please contact Theresa Norris, September In-Reach Ministry coordinator. Her contact information can be found in the Church Directory or by calling St. Patrick s. Paul Jones 1941 Paul Jones was born in 1880 in the rectory of St. Stephen s Church, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Yale University and the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he accepted a call to serve a mission in Logan, Utah. In 1914 Paul Jones was appointed Archdeacon of the Missionary District of Utah and, later that year, was elected its Bishop. Meanwhile, World War I had begun. As Bishop of Utah, Paul Jones did much to expand the Church s mission stations and to strengthen diocesan institutions. At the same time he spoke openly about his opposition to war. With the United States entry into the war, the Bishop of Utah s views became increasingly controversial. At a meeting of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in Los Angeles in 1917, Bishop Jones expressed his belief that war is unchristian, for which he was attacked with banner headlines in the Utah press. As a result of the speech and the reaction it caused in Utah, a commission of the House of Bishops was appointed to investigate the situation. In their report, the commission concluded that The underlying contention of the Bishop of Utah seems to be that war is unchristian. With this general statement the Commission cannot agree The report went on to recommend that The Bishop of Utah ought to resign his office, thus rejecting Paul Jones right to object to war on grounds of faith and conscience. In the spring of 1918, Bishop Jones, yielding to pressure, resigned as Bishop of Utah. For the next 23 years, until his death on September 4, 1941, he continued a ministry within the Church dedicated to peace and conscience, speaking always with a conviction and gentleness rooted in the Gospel. In his farewell to the Missionary District of Utah in 1918, Bishop Jones said: Where I serve the Church is of small importance, so long as I can make my life count in the cause of Christ Expediency may make necessary the resignation of a Bishop at this time, but no expedience can ever justify the degradation of the ideals of the episcopate which these conclusions seem to involve. Merciful God, you sent your beloved Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Raise up in this and every land witnesses who, after the example of your servant Paul Jones, will stand firm in proclaiming the Gospel of the Prince of Peace, our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints)
