1 St. Patrick Episcopal Church 232 East Main Street Lebanon, Ohio Sunday Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal Bishop of Southern Ohio The Rev. Jacqueline Matisse, Rector Nancy Smith, Vestry, Senior Warden Todd Rockstroh, Vestry, Junior Warden Damian Stout, Choir Director Damian Stout, Organist Marjorie Donovan, Music Director Emeritus Vestry Jeff Lane, Financial Secretary Trischa Goodwin Kellie Snigar Wayne Spary, Treasurer Steve Belknap Jill Lane Bill Lasher, Stewardship Matt Lang Linda Powers Gretchen Hautzinger, Office Manager Harry Pritchard Jill Lane, Children s Education Our Mission: To take the love of Christ into the World If you were at the annual meeting in February you heard this news and if not, you may have heard through the grapevine about the sabbatical I m planning this year. With vestry s support and encouragement, I m planning an experience that I pray will edify me and you. A good friend of a good friend lives and works in East Jerusalem. She s been there for five years and was drawn to the work of a school there that is writing a peace hero curriculum which will hopefully be used in schools the world over. I have always been interested in growing in my capacity to engage in peacemaking work and this seems a good fit. I have years of experience teaching and designing curriculum which is what they need right now. So, I ve been in conversation with Susan Shadid and am planning to be with her in Jerusalem the last half of October through mid-december. The dates are still tentative. In fact, a lot is tentative. She has a place for me to stay, but. in case it falls through, don t worry, we ll have a plan B. Maybe I can teach a week class at a college in Bethlehem and stay there for the week. Maybe I can stay with a Bethlehem family. Maybe I can stay at the Anglican college, St. Georges in Jerusalem. Maybe I can connect with a study group she knows well that does intense work on peacemaking, while seeing Israel and Palestine. Do you hear all the maybes? As I ve prayed and listened I ve decided I need to practice what I preach. The door has been opened onto an adventure that matches a desire of my heart. The only No force is my fear of not being in control of all the pieces. So I m going to step out of the boat and trust God to take me where I need to go and teach me what I need to know. To quote last week s sermon, to offer myself where I m being led and trust God to use me well. I have a good deal of homework to do in preparation. Susan has given me a list of books on the Israeli, Palestinian conflict and has asked that I learn how to put together a power point before I come! I confess my apprehension at all the unknowns. Can I manage renting a car and driving in Jerusalem? Can I teach in a college where the theology isn t quite in sync with mine? Susan says to hold my expectations lightly as that s how they live. So I bid your prayers as I prepare for this adventure. I suppose there s a possibility it won t come together but most likely it will. When I return I hope to have much to share! Thank you for being the supportive community you are. I never take you for granted. Jackie

2 ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND WELCOMES If you are planning to attend this year s event, please send in your response asap so we can put together the seating. If you re new to the congregation, please consider attending. It s a great evening in many ways. We have a them which you saw on the invitation. The evening builds around that theme. We start with a silent auction and wine and appetizers. Then move to the sanctuary for entertainment around the theme and a talk by Jackie. Then to a formal, gourmet dinner at tables set by members of the parish. Dinner is followed by a live auction. The table are decorated in line with the theme. Many people work hard on this event, including the cooks and the wait staff. The meal is not your standard fund raiser meal. We hope people really do get a great evening for their donation. And this fund raiser is built into our budget. It must be a success! And always has been! So please help as you can, by attending, by donating an auction item, by helping set up Wednesday evening, May 9 or by asking how else you might help. Thanks so much! Jackie KITCHEN TUBS We are missing four kitchen tubs from our church kitchen. If anyone has borrowed a tub, we need them for the 100,000 Welcomes Dinner on May 12th. We use them to transport and store the china after the dinner. Please bring them back as soon as possible. Thanks. Just Around the Corner by Bill Lasher There is an old growth forest not far behind our house. There is something about an old forest that draws you to it, and makes you want to stand there and look at it. I finally got a good photograph of that forest and I think it s one of the best I ve taken because of that feeling of antiquity. It reminds me of other examples like that including the Lord s Prayer in Old English. It starts out Fader Ure, which looks strange to us, but sounds a lot like the prayer we have today. It goes back over twelve hundred years, and makes you feel connected to those early English Christians. At times, these gifts from the past make an unexpected appearance, as when I tripped and fell onto Chaucer s grave marker in London. He was the first poet interred at Westminster Abbey, in 1400 C.E., and began a long line of famous poets in the Abbey. His writings, like Shakespeare s, are reminders of that same past we find in the forest and the Lord s Prayer. What brings us together to see Yosemite El Capitan or to see a Shakespeare play is a sense of greatness. We know that things like this are out there and we want to experience them. At our own church there are at least two kinds of events that bring us together. The first, of course, is the liturgy. The second is our annual event called 100,000 Welcomes. The first of these makes a continuing connection with Christians over centuries, and the second connects us in the present. For the last twenty-one years, as we celebrate 100,00 Welcomes, we have carried what we experience in our liturgy into our world today. Whether you ve never been, or you ve been twenty-one times, your presence will further these vital connections. Earl Edmonds

5 Monnica Mother of Augustine of Hippo, 387 USHERS We are in need of two more ushers for the 10:30 service. Remember, ushers can be women as well as men. If you are interested in joining the group or finding out what the duties are, talk to Dick Wolford or one of the ushers. It s an easy task but an important one in helping the worship service run smoothly. Dick Wolford Monnica s life story is enshrined in the spiritual autobiography of her eldest son, in The Confessions of Saint Augustine. Born in North Africa about 331, of Berber parents, Monnica was married to a Latinized provincial of Tagaste named Patricius, whom she won to the Christian faith before his death. In her earlier years she was not without worldly ambitions and tastes. She grew in Christian maturity and spiritual insight through an everdeepening life of prayer. Her ambition for her gifted son was transformed into a passionate desire for his conversion to Christ. After his baptism in Milan in 387, by Bishop Ambrose, Augustine and his mother, together with a younger brother, planned to return home to Africa. While awaiting ship at Ostia, the port of Rome, Monnica fell ill. Augustine writes, One day during her illness she had a fainting spell and lost consciousness for a short time. We hurried to her bedside, but she soon regained consciousness and looked up at my brother and me as we stood beside her. With a puzzled look, she asked, Where was I? Then, watching us closely as we stood there speechless with grief, she said, You will bury your mother here. MEN S DINNER The Men s Dinner Group will meet again Thursday, May 3, 6:00 pm at Blackhorse Tavern. Our last group was large so Golden Lamb moved us to the Buckeye Room. We ll have to wait and see exactly where we will land in May. Hope to see you there. Tom Campbell Augustine s brother expressed sorrow, for her sake, that she would die so far from her own country. She said to the two brothers, It does not matter where you bury my body. Do not let that worry you. All I ask of you is that, wherever you may be, you should remember me at the altar of the Lord. To the question, whether she was not afraid at the thought of leaving her body in an alien land, she replied, Nothing is far from God, and I need have no fear that he will not know where to find me, when he comes to raise me to life at the end of the world. Recent excavations at Ostia have uncovered her original tomb. Her mortal remains, however, were transferred in 1430 to the Church of St. Augustine in Rome. IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc? If so, please contact Theresa Norris, May In-Reach Ministry coordinator. Her contact information can be found in the Church Directory or by calling St. Patrick s O Lord, through spiritual discipline you strengthened your servant Monnica to persevere in offering her love and prayers and tears for the conversion of her husband and of Augustine their son: Deepen our devotion, we pray, and use us in accordance with your will to bring others, even our own kindred, to acknowledge Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints)
