1 St. Patrick Episcopal Church 232 East Main Street Lebanon, Ohio Sunday Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal Bishop of Southern Ohio The Rev. Jacqueline Matisse, Rector Nancy Smith, Vestry, Senior Warden Todd Rockstroh, Vestry, Junior Warden Damian Stout, Choir Director Damian Stout, Organist Marjorie Donovan, Music Director Emeritus Vestry Jeff Lane, Financial Secretary Trischa Goodwin Kellie Snigar Wayne Spary, Treasurer Steve Belknap Jill Lane Bill Lasher, Stewardship Matt Lang Linda Powers Gretchen Hautzinger, Office Manager Harry Pritchard Jill Lane, Children s Education Our Mission: To take the love of Christ into the World Our Lenten series on Wednesday evenings this year will focus on peacemaking. Ash Wednesday is the perfect entry into this work. My friend Susan Shadid works in East Jerusalem at the Jerusalem School. The school s motto is Peace begins with me. A curriculum on peace heroes attracted her to the school originally. The idea behind the curriculum is that history studies most often concentrate on war heroes, and rarely look at those who have advocated and worked for peace. Susan and her colleague, Ellie, have written curriculum for sixty peace heroes from every continent in the world. (I don t think they ve included Antarctica!) These lessons are taught in grades 4-8. As I walked the halls looking at the photos of these sixty men and women, I thought about how they have had to look at the sticks and stones within themselves in order for peace to begin with them. It s a well-known psychological tenet that when there s a pattern within ourselves we don t like to acknowledge we throw it out and it lands on others. Then we can blame them for being the problem. That s classic projection. That s why it is said that when something really bothers you in someone else, most likely it s hidden somewhere in you. The confessional litany on Ash Wednesday gives us the opportunity to name the sticks and stones within ourselves, making it more difficult to throw them completely on others. In doing this we take an important step along the way to being a peace maker in our world. Let s begin our journey into Lent on Ash Wednesday paving the way for a deeper exploration into the work Jesus says makes us children of God. Blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called the children of God. Ash Wednesday services are offered at 6:30 am, March 6, and 7:30 pm. The early service is over by 7. The later is a fuller liturgy of music and sermon. Sign-up sheets for soup and bread on the four Wednesdays following Ash Wednesday will be posted on the bulletin board at the top of the ramp in Brigid House. Jacki
2 QUEST I want to thank James and Tracy Raikes for initiating our Quest evening this month. It was a good conversation with good fellowship. It will normally be held on the first Wednesday evening of the month, but in March and April, this will not be possible because of Ash Wednesday. A date for the next gathering will be announced. Consider joining in! Jackie BECOMING BELOVED COMMUNITY KICKOFF, WEDS., FEB 27, 6:30PM Becoming Beloved Community is a new (but old) national church initiative to move forward into the place God has called us to be - focusing on social and racial justice and equality. At the formation stage we are asked to define and enter into fellowship: See conflict as an opportunity for transformation Recognize conversations can be uncomfortable yet stay with our discomfort to gain deeper understanding of ourselves and one another including those unlike us To this end, we will host an informational and formational discussion of how St. Patrick s can define our role in BBC on February 27 at 6:30pm in the social hall. We will share the various initiatives, local, regional, and broader that we are already involved in and supporting. We will discuss adjacent initiatives that we may engage going forward. We will discuss the meaning of fellowship and how we can launch our own initiatives. The purpose is to begin our plan of how we can move forward within, across the broader local community, the diocese, and God s plan for equality across humanity. Questions, , text, or call Todd Rockstroh or Jackie. Todd Rockstroh IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc? If so, please contact Theresa Norris, March In-Reach Ministry coordinator. Her contact information can be found in the Church Directory or by calling St. Patrick s. Just Around the Corner by Bill Lasher I d like to begin with a few words about language, then move on to some other thoughts. Our own language goes back more than 2,000 years, before the Romans invaded England in 47 AD. Unfortunately, records of Old English don t show up until about the fifth century, usually written on tombstones which have survived. Nonetheless, about 50 percent of the words in Modern English are from Old English, with adaptations. A little over 30% of our vocabulary is from French, after their invasion in About 10 percent of our words come from Latin directly, and the remaining 10% are from Greek and other languages. That makes English a potpourri language. The rise and fall of languages seem to go right along with the rise and fall of empires. After the Romans built Hadrian s Wall in the north to keep out invaders from the north, things went well for a time, and then the wall was breached repeatedly, and Romans left England to the English. This pattern of invasion accompanied by change is almost a constant throughout history. All these language sources being adopted into English has resulted in a real hodge-podge of words in our vocabularies. You can see some of those on the signposts of our highways: the French did their share of settling America by traveling down the rivers, especially in the Midwest and South. Indiana and Illinois have some nice French borrowings: Versailles, Vincennes, Terre Haute (High Ground), and my favorite of all the Embarras River, which is still called the Ambraw by natives about as close as you can get to the French pronunciation. You might say that, in general, we re pretty cavalier about combining words to get what we want: demitasse comes from Latin demi-, meaning half, in Latin, and tasse, meaning cup, in Persian all combined into a French word that we borrowed without asking anyone s permission. Calculus comes from Greek Khalix, borrowed into Latin as calculus : it originally described a small pebble used in counting. Just as our genetic material has been enriched by our intermingling, our vocabularies have been enriched by borrowings like these. Old English poets referred to their vocabulary as their wordhoard ; our hoard is much larger, and we have something they didn t have: a dictionary!

5 MARDI GRAS DINNER MARCH 5TH Our Rite 13 and J2A Youth Group will be hosting the annual Mardi Gras Dinner on Tuesday, March 5 th. Bill Ubbes will once again provide a wonderful traditional Mardi Gras meal, and we will have delicious pancakes as well prepared by Bill Hardie and Chris Carey for those who would prefer that instead. Dessert will be prepared by Dan Berger. Also, Gloria Giannestras will again be our Honorary Queen for the night s event. All the proceeds from the meal will go to our 2019 youth mission trip. The dinner will begin at 6:00 and go on until 8:00. The suggested donation is $7 per person or $25.00 per family. We are looking forward to a fun evening for everyone. Earl Edmonds MEN S DINNER The Men's Group will get together again at Reid's Sports Bar, which is located on the south side of Main Street across from Lebanon Electric. As usual we will gather at 6:00, Thursday, March 7, We meet on each first Thursday of the month. There is no planned program but just sharing a time together, eat and chat. We generally have between 8-12 men, but we have no limit. If you are late come on in anyway. We will slide chairs around and make room for you. All men are welcome at any time; plan to join us Thursday, March 7 at 6:00. Note: Ed Burroughs will take over being the facilitator for the group. Tom Campbell is relinquishing that role. Ed's job will be to see that the details of the group get done. If you have any questions or suggestions, direct them to Ed. Tom Campbell Paul Cuffee Witness to the Faith among the Shinnecock, 1812 Born in 1757, Paul Cuffee was converted to Christianity in his early twenties. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church becoming a famous preacher and missionary to the native communities around the presentday Mastic Beach, at Hampton Bays, and at Montauk, all on Long Island, New York. Known as Priest Paul, Cuffee was instrumental in working for the survival of native tribes. He demonstrated particular gifts in bringing together a strong witness to the Christian faith in dialogue with those who held traditional native beliefs. Paul Cuffee strengthened the permanent presence of Native Americans in the area by establishing prayer meeting grounds in several locations. These became safe havens for diplomatic talks and places where native people could practice spiritually. He was a faithful advocate for his people and their way of life. Among the fruits of his efforts was the development of many allies of European descent, thus helping to ensure that Native Americans on Long Island could retain what little land they had left. Part of Cuffee s legacy can still be seen in the ceremonial June Meeting for the Shinnecock tribe that includes a Christian worship service, a tradition that continues to this day. Paul Cuffee is remembered for being a most eloquent speaker and is mentioned in Uncle Tom s Cabin, the famous anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Priest Paul is buried on a tiny plot of land at Canoe Place in Hampton Bays, his historic gravesite diminished by development on the Long Island Railroad. His descendants continue mission work in the area that is a direct result of Priest Paul s efforts. His gravestone reads, Erected by the New York Missionary Society, in memory of the Rev. Paul Cuffee, an Indian of the Shinnecock tribe, who was employed by the Society for the last thirteen years of his life, on the eastern part of Long Island, where he labored with fidelity and success. Humble, pious and indefatigable in testifying the gospel of the grace of God, he finished his course with joy on the 7 th of March, 1812, aged 55 years and 3 days. STOP HUMAN TRAFFICKING There is an initiative in the State of Ohio to stop human trafficking. The Montgomery County Sheriff s Office is coordinating with southwestern Ohio, providing posters of children missing from our part of the state. Every few months new posters are printed and need to be distributed. Six of the eight children on the latest poster were found and brought to safety. I have been delivering these posters to about 45 businesses in Lebanon, and I have a new batch to be distributed. If you are interested in assisting in the distribution of the posters, I would appreciate your help. Please contact me (Christine Pudvan). Thanks! Christine Pudvan Almighty God, you empowered Paul Cuffee to be a powerful evangelist and preacher and so to win many souls for Christ among the Native Americans of Long Island: Help us to proclaim your Word with power, in the Name of the same Jesus Christ; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints)
