1 Knights of Columbus Father Ernie Deslippe Council Wellington Street St. Thomas Ontario N5R2S6 MAY 2014 EDITION Grand Knights Epistle Dennis Grand Knight - Father Ernie Deslippe Council 1467 The Month of May is such an important Month to the Council. We urge all Brothers, their wives and families to join together first in the celebration of the Eucharist and then as we break bread and eggs of course at our Corporate Communion Breakfast. We will lay the foundation for our future as we elect the leadership team who will advance our 114 years of service to our Parishes and our community. We have invited you to being open to take an active part in this work as an executive member. Feel free to approach any of our Trustees or myself or Brother Peter O Donnell if you would like to be of service to your Brothers. Last month we welcomed five Brothers into full Knighthood in our Council. This month the John C. Cody Assembly, as you are aware, is hosting the 4 th degree Exemplification which will complete the journey of the new Sir Knights. Planning for the 2014 edition of Summer Fest is now well under way. We need the assistance of all Brothers to make this another success and especially we would like the assistance of two or three Brothers to aid us in our preparation work. Please let Roy Esbaugh know if you would join us. Finally, in this edition, you will find the order form for Council Apparel. If you do not have a hat, shirt or jacket already, please consider ordering. These items are of excellent quality and allow you to be identified as a Brother. This is of importance as we work together in many projects in our community. Chaplain s Message Do not be afraid I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here for He has been raised just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell the disciples. He has been raised from the dead and He is going before you to Galilee, there you will see Him. These are the words of confirmation that the angel says to Mary Magdelene in Matthew s gospel (Matthew 28). On their way to tell the disciples they encountered Jesus and although fearful the two Mary s embraced Jesus feet and paid Him homage. In this year of 2014 in the month of April we celebrated on the 20 th Jesus resurrection. For all those who profess Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and believe in Him and follow His teachings, there is great joy because He promises eternal life. As St. Paul says, Death where is your sting? Where is your victory?. At the Easter Vigil we bless the Easter water and we reject Satan and all his pomp and profess our faith. This is the Pascal commitment that we make not to be deceived by the devil, but to adhere to Christ s teachings. Hence Easter is the greatest feast of the liturgical year. We came together and prepared our hearts, minds and souls and celebrated the feast with faith in the Risen Lord. Father Brian McColl

3 Civic Recognition Brother Jim Lumley has represented an invaluable resource, willing supporter and excellent communicator and recruiter. And the City of St. Thomas thinks so too. Our Brother Jim has been recognized for his years of VOLUNTEERISM certainly within our Council and our works but as well within his Parish, Relay for Life, and various projects and programs as a Ford Motor Company employee and retiree. Council 1467 expresses our thanks to Jim for his hours of work on our behalf and as well for making our community a better place to live. And behind every great man congratulations and thanks as well to Kathy for supporting Jim in spirit and as well for the time and skills that you have invested over the past years. Brother Art Perrier put pen to paper in order to rightfully acknowledge Jim s history of volunteerism. On Wed. Apr 23, we delivered 2280 lbs. of food to the Caring Cupboard food bank. The success of this food drive helps us to support the Caring Cupboard in yet another way. For every 500lbs of food we donate, we receive a reimbursement of $ from the Supreme Council. Our Council then uses this money to help fund our Soup Group program which has been providing the food bank an average of 2000 servings of nutritious home-made soup each year from our kitchen in our hall. This is your council in action. Were you there? We are grateful to CIPG St. Thomas for their contribution toward the printing of our bulletins this year. Page 4

5 FS Chat from Bill Ressler: May 2014 Annual Dues Brothers, there are still a few members who have not paid their annual dues. Dues are yet to be paid from thirteen members representing $ in arrears. We understand that some people have been south where mail service is limited and relaxing in the sun is more important. Unfortunately the next step is to warn of suspension for lack of payment. 6 We stand on ethical ground Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side that they see so often in the news and in movies.. At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn t true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards. More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don t make it. We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life. In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come. Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance, said the Supreme Knight. But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values.
