1 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Ill. Wayne I. Smith, 33 Personal Representative of the S.G.I G. (360) Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 Secretary PO Box 1112 Everett, WA (888) Toll Free Valley of Everett Orient of Washington Volume 19 MAY 2010 Issue 05 THE RITE BULLETIN One of the things that we need is a plan to insure that we know where we are going and how we are going to get there. If we just continue to do the same things over and over we should expect the same results. Without a plan we cannot measure success as we don t have a road map to point the direction with the steps needed to accomplish our goals. This is true in our personal life as well as in our Lodges and our Valley. Where is our planning for Everett Valley accomplished? All of the business for the Valley is accomplished by the Lodge of Perfection but most, if not all, of the planning is done in our monthly Executive Council meetings and then presented to the Lodge of Perfection for adoption. The Executive Council consists of the Personal Reprehensive, the top three elected officers of each body, the Valley Secretary, the Valley Treasurer and such other members as the Personal Representative may appoint. The intent is to provide the widest possible representation so all points of view are represented and heard. All Executive Council meetings are open and all Brothers of the Valley are encouraged to attend and participate. As a general rule, the Council meets on the second Sunday of each month at 2:00 pm at the Everett Masonic Center. Recently, based on comments and concerns voiced Where are we going? From the Personal Representative Ill. Bro. Wayne I Smith by our members we, through the Lodge of Perfection, adopted a new plan and schedule for the conferral of degrees beginning with the year The intent was to give us more time to assemble a class of candidates seeing as how most, if not all, of the Blue Lodges are dark in the summer just as the Valley is. For our purposes this is the time to begin getting new petitions into the hands of potential candidates and get them in to the Secretary so the various bodies can vote on them. During the summer we will have several events to bring candidates to and to invite new Brothers to attend. It is important that we insure all potential members are welcomed and impressed with the fact that Everett Valley is the friendliest Valley in the Orient. We also need to insure that potential members are aware of the further Masonic education that Scottish Rite provides along with the fellowship and fraternalism. So, now is the time and here is the place. Put a petition (they are downloadable from the Everett Valley website or see our Secretary) in your pocket or in your apron case and then go forth in search of new members, extol the virtues of Scottish Rite Masonry and seek out a great class to begin their further light via Scottish Rite Masonry beginning in January 2011.

2 From The Secretary Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 SCOTTISH RITE IS MASONRY The Scottish Rite is Masonry, constructively, in action. This is a perilous time in the history of our beloved country. These are days when every man must rally to the cause of freedom and loyalty, when love of country is sorely needed. There is no organization that holds freedom more dear or patriotism more of an ideal than the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Patriotic men do well to ally themselves with such an Order, that they may lend their strength, their talents, and their influence to the preservation of the principles upon which our great democracy was founded. Freemasonry is engaged in building a temple, a temple not made with hands, but made up of dreams, the aspirations, the hopes, the inspired visions of humanity. Scottish Rite Masons are builders of that temple. Their prayers, their purposes, their efforts are intelligently directed toward that end, to create in the minds of men a place from which shall flow the light of toleration, humility, love of righteousness, devotion to truth and justice, which shall illuminate the world that is to be. This Rite of Freemasonry is committed to no particular social system; it fosters no political or intellectual propaganda. Rather, its mission is to create and stimulate in human hearts that pure sentiment that springs from a literal and wholehearted acceptance of the truth of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. To every Master Mason who is desirous of more light and a better understanding of Freemasonry, the Scottish Rite appeals, because: It offers an unsurpassed field for the study of Masonry. It enlarges upon and explains and applies the symbols of Masonry. It exemplifies and makes clear the truths and allegory of the Blue Lodge. It presents an unequaled opportunity for the practical demonstration of the teachings of Freemasonry. It gives you a fellowship in its literature, with the deepest minds and purest character of Freemasonry. It allows you to participate in the glorious work of spreading the word of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. It gives you a greater incentive to higher thoughts and nobler deeds, because of a greater knowledge of your responsibilities and the history of the institutions of the Scottish Rite. It creates within you a greater love for chivalry; a greater respect for philosophy, and a never-ending love for your mother Lodge. It inculcates patriotism, love of the flag, respect for law and order and undying loyalty to constitutional government. It carries out the sublime principles of Masonry by cooperating in every way with the Blue Lodge, by maintaining an ever-increasing interest in Masonry. It brings the Brethren from various Lodges together at frequent intervals whereby the ear. Instruction is given spirit of Brotherhood and Fraternity is reflected in everyday living. The Scottish Rite Degrees appeal to the mind and heart through the eye as well as through the by drama, allegory and symbolism in the great lessons to be learned in history, music, the arts and sciences, Masonic philosophy, morality and various religions. The atmosphere of the sanctuary is not that of a schoolroom, but rather that of a gracious fellowship of learners who sit at the feet of the prophets and sages of all times, and imbibe inspiration from their words of wisdom. To those who are interested in securing a broader understanding of Freemasonry and desirous of upholding and fostering of the American way of life, the Scottish Rite is an effective instrument for the promotion and maintenance of these objectives. Brethren just a quick reminder of the last and final degree of the year, the 32nd degree will be performed on Friday, May 14, As always a buffet dinner will be served and the degree will begin at 7:30 PM. In January 2011 the Valley of Everett will be beginning the degrees for our next class, so now is time to start working getting those petitions out to new prospective members. The Masonic Traveler By Ken Thompson Brethren, at the 2010 Conference of Grand Master a new Iphone APP for Freemasonry was introduced and its name is the Masonic Traveler. This was one of the best products notably displayed at the 2010 Conference. The Masonic Traveler App will locate the 11,000 Masonic Lodges located in the United States and will tell you how many are within a specified distance from where you are currently located at any given time. Then this App will furnish you with the address and contact information for the Lodge you might want to visit. This App will also inform you of when the lodge is scheduled to meet, and give you driving directions to that Lodge. The Masonic Traveler IPhone (only) app is currently available from the IPhone App Store for $7.99 Within a month or two the Masonic Traveler App will be updated to include the Scottish Rite Valleys. If you have an IPhone or ITouch, this is a must have app for all Mason and can be checked out at

4 A Call to Replenish the Ranks & For Crucial Masonic Changes (Conclusion) Author Unknown Though the world seems a much better place for all that Freemasonry has accomplished, and though it seems that we have accomplished much, Freemasonry is yet needed to help steer the ship of humanity toward enlightenment. We are now in the eye of the storm and it only seems that we have accomplished much of what we set out for. There is yet much to do. And, it is imperative that Freemasonry protect its potency and relevance so that we will have the wherewithal to serve when called upon again. Failing in this regard will surely bring down on us the judgment of our Masonic brothers who went before, sacrificed, and bled and died to effect much of what we and the world enjoy today. Those brethren passed the reigns of the fraternity on to us expecting that we would ensure its efficacy with the same zeal that they did. Furthermore, dark times likely still lay ahead for mankind. All Masons are required to believe in some God. And almost all believers in a God, of whatever religion, believe that the world yet faces extremely trying times. Therefore, it follows that nearly all Masons, if not all, know and/ or believe that the world yet faces very trying times. Therefore, and because it is likely that Masons will again significantly contribute to the leadership of the world in overcoming such times-it is critical, and is our charge, to ensure Freemasonry's continued relevance and efficacy. To this end, Freemasonry in the United States must accomplish two goals, and begin working toward them with the greatest of diligence at the fastest pace sustainable. First, it is utterly crucial that we begin to reverse the trend of decreasing membership. And, this should be carried out with an eye toward attracting and initiating younger members. Second, we must re -define, re-assert, and re-establish our purposes, goals, and significance. The need to increase membership in all jurisdictions is apparent. In an October 4, 2006 article titled "A Secret Society, Spilling a Few Secrets"-the New York Times reported on what the Grand Lodge of New York is doing to accomplish this very goal. That grand lodge is opening its doors a bit, allowing non- masons to see a glimpse of our impressive world. Furthermore, and like so many other jurisdictions, that grand lodge is offering one day classes wherein all three blue lodge degrees are conferred. Also, initiation and annual dues have steadily been reduced over the past decades. However, none of these actions seems to be accomplishing the goal of increasing membership. Year after year-there are fewer Freemasons nation-wide than there were the previous year. The solution lies in doing what many jurisdictions are now allowing, but few Freemasons are doing-recruiting. I expect that this suggestion will shock and upset some Freemasons. Surely, we are proud of our tradition, which requires that men cannot become Freemasons by being approached and asked to join- they must ask of their own free will and accord to join. However, to balk at the idea of recruiting- falsely assumes that remaining true to our traditions and recruiting are completely dispositive of each other and are totally incompatible. This is not so however. We can both recruit and maintain our tradition of requiring that a man ask of his own free will and accord to become a member. Recruiting can be done while still adhering to our longheld traditions on not asking a man to join Freemasonry. This is done by simp l y m a r k e t i n g o u r fraternity in a way that causes interest within the potential brother, which then causes him to inquire of us. Once internal interest is caused-this will open the door to men asking Freemasons what we are about, what we stand for, and how they can join. In other words, while we cannot ask a man to become a Mason, we can cause interest within him so that we do not need to ask him to join-he will ask us if he can join after first having received a favorable impression of our fraternity for himself. In carrying out this kind of recruiting, two things MUST BE DONE in the following order: first, we must clearly communicate to the potential brother that he must ask us to become a Mason. It is a very common miss-belief that Freemasonry requires an invitation to join. If potential brothers believe this- they will never join because while they are waiting for us to ask them to join-we will be waiting for them to ask us if they can join. Therefore, it is imperative that we ALWAYS, FROM THE BEGINNING, dispel this rumor and inform the potential brother of the truth. Second, and only after the first requirement is satisfied-the actual interest generating actions can take place where the potential brother is SHOWN- through Freemasons' conduct and/or Freemasonry's inherently intriguing nature-that there is much of interest to him in Freemasonry. Furthermore, all Freemasons should know, BY HEART, the answer to the question "how does someone become a Mason" or "how can I become a Mason?" The answer to any such inquiries should be "to become a Mason you must ask a Mason if you can become one. We do not and will not ask men to join us. This is a strict rule we have abided by for centuries. Men must inquire of us first. So, do you know any Masons you can ask?" Usually the man will say "no." The response to this should then be "yes you do--you know me. And, when the time is right, I will be here." Getting a man to such an inquiring point however is another area that Freemasonry as a whole does poorly on. Most Freemasons go to a meeting or two per month, they wear Masonic jewelry to communicate to the outside world that they are a Mason. And, for most, that is as far as it goes. But this is nowhere near as far as they should go. Again, recruiting is the answer. And, the best means of recruiting we could use-while still staying true to our traditions-is by tapping into the good will that Freemasonry has built up over generations. This accumulated good will is evinced in the fact that recently, Freemasonry has enjoyed significant and mostly favorable intrigue in the media. Examples of this include the movie National Treasure; and Dan Brown's book, and subsequent movie, The Da Vinci Code. Furthermore, more intrigue is promised to follow with Dan Brown's next book, which will likely also become a movie, The Solomon Key. Furthermore, there have been numerous documentaries as (Continued on page 5)

5 A Call to Replenish the Ranks & For Crucial Masonic Changes (Continued from Page 4) well as other movies, such as Sean Connery's The Man Who Would Be King. All of these are wonderful tools just waiting to be used to open the dialogue to Freemasonry. These things should be used as marketing tools, in conjunction with lecture speakers or presenters, to bring about the recruiting of new members simply by telling Freemasonry's story. If Freemasons, lodges, and grand lodges would exercise but a little more diligence in recruiting in this fashion, as well as training its members to so effectively and appropriately-far more men who already have the predisposition to join Freemasonrywill learn of our fraternity, become intrigued, and seek membership. Next, I stated that the second change needed is for Freemasonry to re-define, re-assert, and re-establish our purposes, goals, and significance. As already mentioned, so many Masons simply go to a few meetings, wear Masonic jewelry, and do very little else. Furthermore, it seems that so many Masons believe that being a Mason merely involves being a good man, leading a good life, going to lodge twice a month-all of which gives an example to others that hopefully they will inquire about. However, there is so very much more to it than this. It is inherently required of all masons to be and get involved in their communities. Anciently, during the days of operative masonry, we built the communities that people lived, worked, and worshiped in. Later, during speculative masonry, we led and governed the people-such as the Founding Fathers of America did. From this we can see that it has been a standard for Freemasons to enter public service in any number of ways. However, this tendency has languished. And, all too often, Freemasons remain held up in their lodges and supposing that contributing to the community by raising money for charities is enough to satisfy their historical Masonic obligations. This must change. In re-defining, re-asserting, and reestablishing our purposes and goals- Freemasonry and its members should once again seek much greater community involvement. Freemasonry is quite good about taking part in the community through philanthropy; however, this is not enough. Though good and noble- Freemasons should seek positions of community service in all its forms. No less than fourteen U.S. Presidents, including most all of the great presidents, have been Freemasons. From this we should take a lesson- Freemasonry is about community, civic, and governmental leadership, involvement, and service. Furthermore, this is our heritage and history. The most significant of America's Founding Fathers were Freemasons. And, we should follow their leads and reinstitute and rejuvenate within our ranks a culture that encourages such community involvement and service. Furthermore, in re-defining, reasserting, and re-establishing our purposes and goals-we should be cautious to not cheapen our Fraternity. When I joined, I was given the option to attend a one-day class where I could obtain all 3 blue lodge degrees. However, I, like several other new-comers, decided that I wanted the Freemasonry of old. I wanted to earn each degree-not simply have it conferred on me. Also, I was told that the initiation dues for the first three degrees, as well as the annual dues, had been vastly reduced compared to what they once were. These statements were meant to induce me to become a Mason. However, they had somewhat the opposite effect on me. I wanted to belong to something more important than myself. I wanted to gain admission to something special-not something easy. And, I expected to work for it and earn it. This is much like any product or service for sale where too Iowa price is attached. The effect is that potential buyers considering the item attribute a far less value to it than they otherwise would have. Furthermore, such persons will attribute a lower value even if the item is of great actual value. The old adages "you get what you pay for" and "if it's too good to be true, it probable is," applies here and proves the point. When we communicate to others that what we are offering is worth less-they accept this message and believe that it is, indeed, worth less than it really is. Therefore, it is imperative that we not cheapen the Fraternity, and by so doing, inadvertently communicate to the outside world, as little value. If we do communicate this-we can't even expect our current members to meaningfully contribute to the Fraternity, which would have devastating effects. None of this is to say that one day classes or low initiation fees and annual dues should be done away with absolutely. Possibly there is a middle ground that can accomplish all the seemingly competing and contrary goals that we have. Possibly one day classes should be retained-but used only when absolutely necessary and for very good reasons. And, possibly initiation fees and annual dues could be put on a sliding scale of sorts that takes into account a brother's ability to contribute to the lodge. Currently, all members pay the same fees and dues. This means that the poorer members are contributing more to Freemasonry than the wealthier. So, maybe it would be more fair to make our fees and dues somewhat linked to a brother's ability to contribute. Alternatively, the amount of fees and dues could be left to each brother to decide what they can afford to contribute themselves. It wouldn't surprise me if, in using either idea, lodges experienced a significant increase in the absolute amount of fees and dues that they receive. One of my current lodge's dues is $40 per year-but I would likely be more than willing to contribute as much as $100-$200 per year. Imagine what that kind of increase would mean to each and every lodge treasurer when multiplied by the number of active masons in each lodge. These suggestions can be summarized by saying that there are innovative and "outside the box" kinds of solutions that can accomplish just about anything Freemasons want or need to. We just need to make ourselves a little more flexible and open to new ideas and solutions than possibly we have been in the past. If American Freemasonry and Freemasons implemented these suggestions effectively, there can be little to no doubt that many of our current struggles would subside and that Freemasonry would reclaim its rightful place as a leading organization in the United States. Hopefully this is of enough importance for enough Freemasons, lodges, and grand lodges to meaningfully begin working toward tackling these challenges, which are most certainly yet within our power and ability to reverse.
