The truths of Masonry are contained within the religions of the world. We are admonished to be devoted to the teaching and diffusion of the true principles of Masonry.

Bro. Carl Smith, 33 September is upon us and it is time for Everett Valley to once again begin our labors. On September 11 th we will resume the conferral of the Degrees with the presentation of the 26, Prince of Mercy. In this Degree we are taught that the trinity of Deity belongs to no single religion. The truths of Masonry are contained within the religions of the world. We are admonished to be devoted to the teaching and diffusion of the true principles of Masonry. The 29th Degree, Scottish Knight of Saint Andrew, will be conferred on September 18 th. I particularly like this Degree, not only for its teachings, but because it sheds some light on the history of the Scottish Rite. The traditional history of the Scottish Order of Saint Andrew gives the history of the Knights Templar from their formation in the year 1118, through their betrayal in 1307, and the trial and martyrdom of their Grand Master, Jacques DeMolay, in It further preserves the legend of their alliance with King Robert the Bruce of Scotland at the Battle of Bannockburn, St. John s Day, 1314, where the English army of King Edward II was defeated. To commemorate their service, King Robert Bruce created, and received these knights into, the Scottish Order of St. Andrew du Chardon, meaning of the Thistle. The History of the Order states that the hereditary Grand Mastership of the Order passed down from King Robert the Bruce in succession through the Stuart Royal family to Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the last Grand Master in Scotland, who, after his defeat by the English in 1745, escaped into exile in France and established there a Chapter of Rosé Croix of Heredom which encompassed the Order of St. Andrew. The Order was in the possession of the founders of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry at its formation in 1801, at which time the legend of the Degree was still combined with the Rosé Croix This degree emphasizes the Masonic teachings of equality and toleration. We are reminded that no one man, no one Church, no one religion, has a monopoly of truth; that while we must be true and faithful to our own convictions, we must respect the opinions of others. On September 25 th the 30 th Degree, Knight Kadosh, will be presented. Attend and witness the lessons taught in this Degree. They are impressive and well presented. Everett Valley has a good reputation for the performance of this Degree. It is not too early to begin encouraging our Masonic Brethren that are not yet members of Scottish Rite to join. Explain the benefits to be enjoyed and the lessons to be learned. Let them know that in January we will be starting another class and they need to be a part of it. Carl B. 2 Masonic Dinosaurs" By Arthur R. H. Scott, 32 So-called "Masonic dinosaurs" can be central to Freemasonry's revitalization. Do you recall the breakfast cereal commercial on TV where the grandfather relates to his grandson how he regularly walked five miles to school in three feet of snow, uphill both ways? I was thinking of that commercial as I reflected on a dialogue I recently had with some Brethren during a very sociable Masonic gathering, and I began to ask myself if, perhaps, I had failed to realize, until now, that I have become a Masonic dinosaur. Although I consider myself still young in Freemasonry, I have been a member of the Craft for more than 25 years. I must confess that I have seen some big changes in Masonry over that relatively short span. But then look at the even bigger changes that have occurred in the world around us, some so quickly it makes your head spin! So, when at the Masonic gathering I began to lament about various subjectssuch as empty Lodge sidelines, lack of preparedness of officers, and a noticeable decline in the overall quality of Freemasonry-I was abruptly chastised for my comments. This weighed heavily on my mind. After mulling it over, however, it soon occurred to me that I was like the grandfather in the cereal commercial. None of my Masonic colleagues had been Masons for more than 10 years. Some had missed more chairs than they had occupied on their way to the East. I suddenly realized that my Masonic discourse was not unlike telling young children about how we used to ride a trolley car for 15 cents, or take a steamdrawn train to visit relatives in neighboring cities because in those days few families owned an automobile, or reminiscing about when Coca- Cola was six bottles for 36 cents and gasoline was 40 cents a gallon. It was then I realized that people couldn't miss something they haven't seen or experienced. So, although I personally lament the passing of the steam engine with its glistening power, black smoke, hissing steam and polished brass, I cannot expect today's generation to share that nostalgia. Why then, should I expect them to share Masonic nostalgia about comfortably filled Lodge rooms where ritual was done with such feeling that it brought a lump to your throat and a tear to your eye? Most younger Masons have little experience of ritual delivered with such perfection that it makes you sit up in absolute awe, something that was the rule, rather than the exception, in years past. We often hear old-timers say, "Those were the good old days." In most instances, the clock cannot be turned back. But in Freemasonry it can. Comfortably filled Lodge rooms, where ritual is done with feeling and delivered with perfection, are achievable. The nostalgia that enhances Freemasonry so much can be made a reality. We just have to want it and work at it. Come to think of it, that's where we Masonic dinosaurs could lend a hand to these young whippersnappers! 3 It is incumbent on all new petitioners to explore, and define what they consider relevant to an understanding of their new and unique venture called Freemasonry. It is also a necessity that guidance and support from all brothers, and especially an individual brother, explains, direct and, if necessary, challenge the brother. This role of mentor is the cornerstone of any lodge educational program. It is the cement which supports the foundation of friendship, morality, and brotherly love. Time constraints can make individual instruction strained, but the relationship and guidance of a mentor can facilitate the new brother to a better understanding of the degrees and protocols in a lodge. It also gives him the working tools to challenge him in his journey. In his new Masonic world, a new brother often has simple questions; where do I sit, how do I tie my apron, or what degree are we opening on? Easily answered, but who does he ask? Lodge education and Masonic study is imperative for the faithful discharge of ritual, but also to aid the craft from becoming stagnate and self indulgent. Establishment of a mentoring program is simple. One brother takes another and directs, elaborates, and explains. This brotherhood of mentorship creates a desire for each of the parties to view the craft as an examination of ourselves. The relationship between mentor and student builds a friendship, and a kinship for the fraternity germinates. A wonderful illumination takes place, and the quest for "further light in Masonry" becomes a self illumination. The new brother builds his inner spirit and inner knowledge. A mentor presents a working knowledge of procedures which may seem common to the rest of the lodge. He may issue praise or criticism, but always with the mindset that, with his help, the brother may take a seat among the officers or even progress to Worshipful Master. Within a Masonic lodge building are books, charts, and fliers. Some lodges can access electronic media, or there may even be a Masonic research library. Yet, at the threshold of that open door stands the mentor. "Men are men the world over. That which is hidden is sought; that which is forbidden is desired; that which is secret is studied; that which is rare is held valuable." If Masonry has a secret, it is that "to be of use to others, Masonry must be of use to you." In mentoring, the compelling forces of curiosity and human nature are brought together. The sprit and love of Masonry are shared as the guided and guide step with Mentoring the Trade-Craft By William Edgeworth newfound kinship. The newly initiated brother learns incalculable enrichment, with the reassurance that Freemasonry is all and more than his initial belief. Without a mentor, the search for answers becomes a futile attempt to understanding. With a mentor, the absence of doubt allows the application of clarity. A mentor is a teacher with experience, knowledge, and history; a lodge reference book just waiting to be opened by the new brother. Mentoring is badly needed in lodges where stagnation threatens to become the norm. Mentoring creates a new found excitement for questions, explanations, and recitations. The foundation of mentoring is both ancient and celebratory. It is an exchange, an understanding between a novice and a seasoned individual, whereby each becomes part of the circle; each becomes a working tool to the craft. Maintaining, discovering, and polishing them into that which makes good men better. In these fast, and, at times, disconnected days, a mentoring relationship is needed at the forefront of every lodge educational program. A mentor is the catalyst by which a new brother has the ways and means by which the brotherhood of Freemasonry is spread. 4 My brothers, wisdom, strength and beauty are presented to us many times as being represented by the Worshipful Master, Senior and Junior Wardens, without which no Lodge of Masonry could exist, for we learn that there must be wisdom to contrive, strength to support, and beauty to adorn all great and important undertakings. The serious Mason gradually gains in his appreciation of wisdom to the point where he becomes a lover of wisdom, (thus satisfying the dictionary definition of a philosopher). Precisely, the term an appreciator, or lover, of wisdom does not imply that the person be himself wise, (although that may well be the case), but it does clearly imply that the person has raised his level of discernment to that point where he is able to recognize wisdom when he sees it, and then, to a degree, appreciate it. Generally wisdom is prudence in action. Specifically wisdom is the accurate application of accurate knowledge for the greatest good. In the last three chairs of the line of chairs in our Lodge, we find that the normal progression is such that beauty. (the station of the Junior Warden), leads to strength, (the station of the Senior Warden), and strength, in turn, leads to wisdom, (the station of the Worshipful Master). As Masons we are appreciators and lovers of wisdom, and as such, we are vitally interested in learning to subdue our passions and improve ourselves in Masonry. It may well be that the line of chairs serves a dual purpose. First, it may symbolize that subtle FREEMASONRY & BEAUTY Author Unknown growth that every Mason achieves in his struggles with the rough and rugged road in order to perfect himself (mastership). Second, it may be a visible process within the Lodge ritual whereby we observe the growth of our brothers travelling through the line. No brother travels through the line of chairs without striving, (to some degree), to achieve the necessary work that his duties demand in order for the Lodge to continue functioning harmoniously. The line of chairs is also a tool within the structure of the Lodge whereby a brother may strive in his search to improve himself in Masonry while his fellow Masons observe that growth. Thus, if we strive then, (to some degree), beauty leads to strength and strength leads to wisdom. This seems to be a Masonic formula for personal growth of character. While a Mason thinks about the beautiful he is focusing his mind on the handiwork of the Supreme Architect of the Universe. While a Mason thinks about the beautiful, he is not filling the universe with sadness or any of the other numerous members of that family of unhappy thoughts and feelings. While a Mason thinks about the beautiful, his mind is raised to lofty thoughts and he glimpses the higher aspects of brotherly love, relief and truth. While a Mason thinks about the beautiful, he finds his heart and mind touching the eternal brotherhood of Masonry whereby the feelings of aloneness melt away and his desire to spread the cement of brotherly love is strengthened. While the Mason thinks about the beautiful, he finds that his heart responds to beauty with a sigh whereby a subtle communion with God fortifies and increases his capacity for joyful labor whereby he can be of greater service to his Fraternity. My brothers, in conclusion, we see that while thinking about the beautiful, we find that we gain strength and wisdom to extend our Compass points according to a higher measure, and thus ever increase our circle of service in which we joyfully labor, for the good of the Fraternity and thus for the whole of Humanity, for Humanity is made up of individuals, and as individuals grow in character, so grows Humanity. My brothers, let us think about the beautiful. Let us open our hearts to the great spiritual gift of beauty. Let us embrace beauty in our hearts. Let us search for ever greater beauty. Let us strive for it. Where is there a finer way to open the gates to strength and wisdom?

Although there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite serve to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge. A Mason who chooses to further his Masonic experience by becoming a 32 Scottish Rite Mason will be expanding upon the fundamental principles of Freemasonry. The moral and ethical lessons will allow him to be constantly reminded of his duty to God, Family, Country, and Fellow Man.
