From the Secretary By Charrison Lochaby, 33 The History of Columbus Day Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in the United States in 1937, though people have celebrated Columbus' voyage since the colonial period. In 1792, New York City and other U.S. cities celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event. During the four hundredth anniversary in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress. Catholic immigration in the mid-19 th century induced discrimination from anti-immigrant activists. Like many other immigrant communities, Catholics developed organizations to fight discrimination and provide insurance for the struggling immigrants. The predominately-irish immigrants who organized themselves as the Knights of Columbus, chose that name in part because it saw Christopher Columbus as a fitting symbol of Catholic immigrants' right to citizenship: one of their own, a fellow Catholic, had discovered America. Many Italian-Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage, the first occasion being in New York City on October 12, Columbus Day was first enshrined as a legal holiday in the United States through the lobbying of Angelo Noce, a first generation Italian, in Denver. The first statewide Columbus Day holiday was proclaimed by Colorado governor Jesse F. McDonald in 1905, and it was made a statutory holiday in 1907 In April 1934, as a result of lobbying by the Knights of Columbus, Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made October 12 a federal holiday under the name Columbus Day. Since 1970, the holiday has been fixed to the second Monday in October, coincidentally the same day as Thanksgiving in neighboring Canada (which was fixed to that date in 1959) (note that October 12, 1970, was a Monday). It is generally observed nowadays by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal Service, other federal agencies, most state government offices, many businesses, and most school districts. Some businesses and some stock exchanges remain open, also some states and municipalities abstain from observing the holiday. The traditional date of the holiday also adjoins the anniversary of the United States Navy (founded October 13, 1775), and thus both occasions are customarily observed by the Navy (and usually the Marinc Corps as well) with either a 72 or 96-hour liberty period. 3 Understanding the Issues Facing Aging Seniors part III of III The Senior's Health Is Failing Health can deteriorate over a period of time or a change in health can occur suddenly. Sudden unexpected changes in health might be a diagnosis of cancer or it might be a heart attack or a stroke or some other acute health issue. Health that has deteriorated over a period of time will eventually result in disability the inability of the senior to care for his or her own physical needs. This disability will then result in someone acting as a caregiver to assist in such things as dressing, bathing, toileting, ambulating, needing help with incontinence, preparing meals, answering the phone, paying bills, shopping, running errands and so on. This need for a caregiver usually requires making some major decisions for the remainder of the period in which the care is needed. As a general rule, chronic health failure over a period of time is not going to improve and will only get worse, resulting in a greater need for care giving. Acute changes in health can also lead to disability and the need for a caregiver. However, often the senior recovers and the disability disappears. On the other hand, sometimes the acute healthcare issue results in permanent disability and a permanent need for care. A worsening of health for a senior especially a senior of advanced age will typically trigger the need for intervention and the need for making some serious decisions about living arrangements, costs, government support and family support. Masonic Outreach Services By Mary Craves Hollands, Director October 2014 Part III of III The Senior Is Losing His or Her Independence Seniors can lose their independence simply because of advanced age and a general weakness and frailty requiring intervention and support from other people. However, the most common cause of losing independence is dementia. The risk of dementia or a loss of cognitive capacity increases considerably as one grows older. For aged seniors who are age 80 and above, the risk of dementia is almost 50%. This means that almost half of all aged seniors are experiencing some form of cognitive impairment. Families often wait too long before intervening to assist the aged senior to maintain independence. Perhaps it is because the family is in denial or perhaps it is because they hope it will go away or perhaps it is for some other reason. As part of the planning process, all families should plan for the contingency of their loved ones losing their independence and should be ready to step in at the appropriate time. Aging Seniors Are Vulnerable to Financial Exploitation As one grows older, there is a tendency to be more trusting and thus more vulnerable to financial exploitation. We don't need statistics to prove that, we simply know from experience that this is true. Financial exploitation can take several forms. For example, many seniors will hire handymen or mechanics or other service providers to help them with their maintenance, repair or remodeling needs. Unscrupulous maintenance or repair providers sometimes take advantage of seniors by providing services that are unnecessary and these people often charge more for those services. Additionally, because of the many exposés on television, all of us are aware of phone scams and Internet scams that take advantage of seniors and rob them of their savings. Finally, some financial services practitioners will sell financial products, financial services or investments to seniors that are not suitable for them that may result in losses or the inability to access their funds. It is crucial for family and friends to become aware of this tendency for financial exploitation and to develop a plan to protect senior loved ones from it. If you or someone you know needs assistance with any of the issues of aging, please call Masonic Outreach Services at / Ext 101 or mcraves-hollands@mrcwa.org. 4 By William J. Jason, 33 Thanksgiving for the Creator's bounty should be the beginning of our service to others today. The Feast of Tishri in Freemasonry derives from the Jewish Festival of Sukkoth which is marked chiefly by the building of temporary structures (sukkah, singular; sukkoth, plural) made of boards, canvass, etc. and roofed with branches, especially pine branches. These structures are built against or near a house or synagogue and used during the Festival of Sukkoth chiefly as dining areas. Beginning on the 15th day of the month of Tishri, which in 1999 corresponds to sunset on September 25 until sundown on October 1, the feast is celebrated for eight days by Orthodox and Conservative Jews outside of Israel, and for seven days by Reform Jews and by Jews in Israel. On the last day of the Feast of Tishri, a reading of the Pentateuch is completed, and a new cycle begins. Sukkoth celebrates the harvest and commemorates the period after the exodus from Egypt during which the Jews wandered in the wilderness and lived in huts. Also called the Feast of Booths and Feast of Tabernacles, the biblical Festival of Sukkoth (also spelled Succoth) relates to the general celebration of Thanksgiving in America today and to Freemasonry, particularly the Scottish Rite's observance of the Feast of Tishri. The latter is one of the Rite's several ceremonies observing biblical events for example, Maundy Thursday, Passover, and Easter Sunday. Yet Freemasonry is an organization with no religious agenda of its own, and these Masonic observances are done in such a manner as to be acceptable to men of all faiths. In the Masoretic text of the Scriptures, Leviticus, Chapter 23, Verses 9 10, we read, "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest." And in Verses 39 and 40, we read, "Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord... And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days." So, three and a half centuries ago here in America, a small group of courageous men and women, the Puritans, fewer than half the number who had landed in Plymouth Harbor during a snowstorm a year before, were inspired by the Biblical injunction to set aside a day of prayer and thanksgiving to God, a day which has become a traditional American observance, Thanksgiving Day. Rabbi Julius Nodel, 32, in a Feast of Tishri address to the St. Louis Scottish Rite Bodies some years ago, said: "Among the symbols of Succoth are four species of plants the citron, the branch of the palm tree, the myrtle leaves, and the willow leaves. The citron plant produces both fruit and fragrance. The palm produces fruit but no fragrance. The myrtle produces fragrance but no fruit, and the willow produces neither fruit nor fragrance. This teaches us that there are also four kinds of people. There are those that have knowledge and good deeds they correspond to the citron. There are those who live a life of good deeds, but have no knowledge they are like the palm. There are those who have knowledge, but perform no good deeds they are like the myrtle, and there are those who have neither knowledge nor good deeds they are like the willow. Yet, on Succoth, all of these different species of plants are placed together and bound as one, thus teaching us that though there are different kinds of people on Earth, with their own interests and desires, accomplishments and failures, they must still be bound together in one universal brotherhood." The evolution of the Jewish feast of Succoth into an American national day, Thanksgiving, could not have occurred except in a climate of freedom and independence. Thus, this holiday is uniquely American and Masonic since the same culture that nurtured religious freedom and toleration also nurtured the growth of Freemasonry. It is no coincidence that Freemasonry, while universal, has reached its greatest strength and acceptance here in the United States. Also, I suggest one reason for this growth and acceptance has been the striving of Masons to attain the character of the citron to possess knowledge, that is, faith, while performing good works. Consider the manifold charities of all Masonic and Masonic-related Bodies the Blue Lodges, the Scottish and York Rites, the Shrine, the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, etc. Each actively supports its own philanthropies as well as the charities of the other Masonic Bodies. The second, recent edition of Masonic Philanthropies, A Tradition of Caring contains as authoritative a tabulation as possible of Masonic philanthropy today. The author of this book, Ill. S. Brent Morris, 33, conservatively estimates the Craft contributes in excess of two million dollars per day of which 70% goes to the general American public. This sum is not given under duress or with the expectation of recognition or return, but voluntarily as a matter of duty. We sometimes are asked why Masons devote so much of their time and energy to the cause of aiding those less fortunate. Possibly this little fable from Jewish folklore might explain. A wise and learned Rabbi, noting that his most promising student seemed saddened and preoccupied, asked the young man, "What's troubling you, my son?" The student replied, "Rabbi, as I observe the injustice in the world and man's inhumanity to man everywhere, I have come to the conclusion that when God created the world, He didn't do a very good job." In response, the Rabbi asked, "Do you think you could have done better?" The student quietly answered, "Rabbi, I honestly think I could have." To which the wise man responded, "THEN BEGIN!" In the various Bodies of Masonry, men of all faiths may unite and, each in his own way, begin.

Masonic Civility of Servant Leadership David A. McCuistion, 32 KCCH, Valley of Everett Are you fully satisfied with the growing uncivil culture magnified through movies, TV programs and society in general? How does it affect your leadership, more specifically your "serving the needs of others" nature, which your behaviors broadcasts to those with whom you interact within the Fraternity and Scottish Rite? For years human nature, and therefore Masonic principles, dictated behavior in treating others with respect, with ethical correctness, and with interactions grounded in the Golden Rule - "Doing unto others as you would like others to do unto you." Our esteemed Brother George Washington, at age sixteen, created 110 Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation, which he based on a set of rules composed by French Jesuits in The entertainment media seems to be on a quest to erode that standard with publicly abusive foul language, public sexual conduct that belongs in private, and disrespectful behaviors toward others as if nature gave them the right to do so. All purportedly a God-given right under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as if it is the natural behavior to exhibit. For this reason Civility Projects are springing up nationwide attempting to return civility to society - personally and professionally. Several Grand Lodge s began a Masonic Civility Project at the most recent Grand Masters Conference. Hence, the very nature of Masonic Servant Leadership is the most logical leadership philosophy to be followed, again personally and professionally. Speak Your Peace, Rutgers University, Alverno College, and the Oshkosh Civility Project are a few examples of entities who have initiated actions to return civility to society. In addition, P. M. Forni's book "Choosing Civility" expounds on 25 way to improve civility in human interactions. Masonic leaders, whose vision is to make Brother Masons better in a wide variety of ways, naturally exhibit many of Forni's ideals in their day-to-day leadership of their people. Below are a few examples for masonic servant leaders to follow. 1. Pay Attention/Listen. Listen intently when others are speaking. Inhibit the "inner voice" from interrupting with comments such as "The problem is...", or "We've always done it this way" in an attempt to stop the flow of ideas and suggestions. Listen for the "intent" and will of what is being said. Look for non-verbal communications and maintain eye-to-eye contact with the person with whom you are speaking. Lastly, listen to understand. 2. Be Inclusive. Civility knows no ethnicity, no level of leadership, no forum, no religion, no sexual preference, no generation, and no bounds. Being inclusive includes everyone. It is about leading and serving for the betterment of mankind. 3. No Gossiping. Gossiping is one of the most hurtful behaviors and accomplishes nothing. Most times it is negative and idle words, that is divisive and destructive. In some cases, it is also racist. All of which, quite possible, only lowers esteem. 4. Be Respectful. First of all, remember, respect has nothing to do with liking or disliking someone. Everyone deserves a certain level of respect; we all expect to be respected for who we are and what we have accomplished. A point I always make with my students is that, contrary to the common comment of respect is earned, how much more or less respect one garners depends on individual behavior, respect toward others, and the common decency, i.e. civility, extended toward others. Civility is Respectful Behavior, Respect is Honorable Behavior. 5. Build Relationships. Servant Leadership is about building relationships. Therefore, being civil is especially helpful in this process. There is no room for boasting and prideful attitudes, humility is the adhesive that solidifies teamwork and seeks to repair damaged relationships. Seek to apologize, forgive and affirm success of others. 6. Use Constructive Language. Be mindful of the words you use, when you use them, and also of the words you speak through your nonverbal communications. Foul language in the middle of the ocean, out of sight and sounds of others, may serve a purpose. However, foul language in a public forum is disrespectful toward others. More specifically, foul language often times indicates an inability to properly use correct language, as well as a limited repository of words and their usage. 7. Take Responsibility. Don t shift responsibility or place blame on other people. Hold yourself accountable, accept your own faults, speak positively, clean up your language and respect everyone. Be The Example! These are just a few of examples Servant Leaders need to follow in their interactions with other all the time, in every situation and regardless of the type of organization in which one belongs. Not only is it time to restore civility in all aspects of our lives, it is essential in your servant leadership principles and practices. Are you doing your part? Are you always civil in the example you set for others? Masons must always Be the Example! Keep the Quest Alive.

Did you know that 30 years ago, in September of 1984, the Scottish Rite Masons in the Washington Orient followed the example set by their brethren across the nation and founded a childhood speech and language program to serve the children and families of Washington State? September marked the beginning of Rite- Care s celebration of its 30 th year of empowering children to communicate; a milestone we could never have reached without the benevolence of Scottish Rite Masonry and the ongoing generosity of our board members, donors, volunteers and supporters! 30 years ago RiteCare started with one clinic in Shoreline, WA. Today, RiteCare has another clinic in Spokane and 7 sponsored programs throughout the Washington Valleys providing vital communications services to children who need it most. Every child who has benefited from your support and RiteCare s programs has graduated from speech therapy a better communicator than when they began treatment. So, for the past 30 years of dedication, allow us to say THANK YOU! for the impact you have had on RiteCare, our programs and our client families. Ask our graduates, and their families, about that support and they will tell you about the impact you have had in their life. Ask the mom of the little boy, who when he started treatment in our Spokane Clinic at 5 years old still couldn t speak, about the impact of your support and she would smile at you and tell you about that same little boy, now 11, who stood up in front of his entire school and gave a RiteCare Submitted By Meagan Garret HAPPY ANNIVERSARY RiteCare of Washington!!! speech asking them to vote for him. He won his student body election and is now making a difference for the kids in his school, just like you made a difference for him. Yes, as RiteCare celebrates its 30 th year, we have much to be proud of; but there is still much work to be done! For every one of our nearly 2,500 success stories from the last 30 years, hundreds more children still suffer in silence today, waiting for their spot in one of our treatment programs. In our Spokane Clinic alone, there is an 18 month waiting list for children to receive services. Additionally, nearly 40,000 children across Washington need access to the child centered, family focused, intensive therapies that RiteCare provides. 40,000 children are waiting for you to help them find their voice. We need the support of the Scottish Rite Masons just as much today as we did 30 years ago at our founding. You can support the RiteCare mission of empowering children to communicate in so many ways. Your action now empowers children to communicate! You keep our mission moving forward when you: Become a RiteCare Champion Become a RiteCare Volunteer Become a RiteCare Donor Become a RiteCare Legacy Giver To learn more about how you can get involved with RiteCare please contact Chris Baker at cbaker@ritecarewa.org or INTO THE LIVES OF OTHERS By Dewey H, Wollstein, PGM, 32, KCCH All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own. In words, symbols, and allegory, Masonry stresses this great truth. Masonry is the science of morality, and through the study of right-living, establishes its high purpose of making men wiser, better, and consequently happier. But let us forever keep in mind that the sending out works two ways. Good begets good and evil begets evil. The reaping is the direct result of the sowing. There is the choice of materials offered the candidate as he stands in the northeast corner of the lodge and with it he has the right to choose that which disappears as a shadow or that which defies the onslaught of time. The erected edifice is the direct result of the materials that he sent out for Into the Lives of Others the construction of the Temple. Is not Masonry in truth then a Moral Science? Light-hearted means free from anxiety the sending out of those things which will not come back as burdensome regrets and which will bind the heart and conscience. Take it the other way. To send out burdens of hate into the lives of others is to carry around with us the chains of oppression. What do we seek in a foreign country? That which is the source of all good, that which will be safe to send out because its reappearance in our own lives will carry with it The Blessings of Heaven. Masonic Websites By Kenneth Thompson I received several this past week with these two Masonic Websites and thought it would be a great idea to share it with my Brethren. So, my Brethren, please enjoy. G's that hang in Texas Lodges These are a few of the G's that hang in Texas Lodges. The pictures were submitted several years ago by a wide variety of photographers. 7 How s Your Apron? By RWB Jim Mendoza, SGW, Grand Lodge of WA While doing some research, I ran into something called the Apron Project. This is an initiative by Progressive Insurance to shine a light on people who make progress by making something a little bit better. I was struck be these words on their website: An apron is hard work. An apron is pride in what you do. An apron is not quitting until you ve made something better. So let s look at this from a Masonic perspective An apron is hard work. Freemasonry consists of a course of moral and symbolic instruction. One lesson that you will never hear is this: Take a seat good and faithful Brother because your work is done! Every single lesson we learn as Masons is about some kind of important work that must be done with self, with others, to the greater Glory of God. Nobody, ever, said that Freemasonry was a cakewalk. It is, my friends, WORK and I think it never ends. I read someplace that life s heaviest burden is to have nothing to carry. We have to pray for stronger backs, not lighter loads. An apron is pride in what you do. When you think about giants of our Craft, they shared a common trait. They set expectations for performance of which we could all be proud. They knew the work, performed it well, visited Masonic ally, and were accountable for the responsibilities of any office they held. Setting expectations is a job each and every one of us can do. My sense is that we have let the standards slip in recent years and we need to raise them back up. We have been paying far too great a price for that slippage; and of course the very best way is to role model expected behavior. With the ritual, with attendance, with volunteering, with visiting and visitations, with coaching, with study and learning, with membership development, with charity I think you get the picture. An apron is not quitting until you ve made something better. We are all rough ashlars on the same journey to becoming perfect ashlars. It is well to remember, at least from an operative perspective, that a perfect ashlar is stone made ready by the hands of the workmen to be adjusted by the fellowcraft for the builders use. In other words, it is not perfect but usable. None of us will reach perfection, but we will definitely not be of use if we stop striving for perfection. In part, that means putting into application the lessons and examples taught you by your mentors and role models, then passing those lessons and examples those who will come after you. So here s my question: How s your apron? MASONIC TRIVIA GRAND LODGE OF ISRAEL The Grand Lodge of the State of Israel was consecrated on October 20, 1953 at the Y.M.C.A. Hall in Jerusalem by the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The first Masonic Lodge in the Holy Land was the Royal Solomon Mother Lodge No. 293, under the Grand Lodge of Canada in Ontario, whose first meeting was held in the King Solomon's Quarries of Jerusalem on May 7, Currently, the Grand Lodge has about 1,200 members in 56 lodges, working in nine languages Hebrew, Arabic, English, French, Romanian, Turkish, Russian, German and Spanish and five different religions. Three Palestinians Arabs were Grand Masters of the Grand Lodge of Israel between 1933 and [From an article in Masonic Messenger, April 2014, Grand Lodge of Georgia] In July 1863, Confederate raiders rode into Versailles, IN, capturing the local militia and stealing the county treasury. The next day, General John Morgan (CSA), learned that his men had also made off with the jewels of the local lodge. They were returned the following day. Morgan was from Daviess Lodge #22, Lexington, KY.

The seventh and final Feast of the Lord is the Feast of Tabernacles. It occurs five days after the Day of Atonement on the fifteenth of Tishri (October). This feast is also called the Feast of Ingathering (Exodus 23:16; 34:22), the Feast to the Lord (Leviticus 23:39; Judges 21:9), the Feast of Booths, or simply "the feast" (Leviticus 23:36; Deuteronomy 16:13; I Kings 8:2; II Chronicles 5:3, 7:8; Nehemiah 8:14; Isaiah 30:29; Ezekiel 45:23,25) because it was so well-known. After the return from Exile, Ezra read the law and led the Israelites in acts of penitence during the Feast of Tabernacles (Nehemiah 8:13-18). The dedication of Solomon's' Temple also took place (I Kings 8:2) during this feast. Later, Josephus referred to the Feast of Tabernacles as the holiest and greatest of the Hebrew feasts. On the first day of the feast, each participant had to collect twigs of myrtle, willow, and palm in the area of Jerusalem for construction of their booth (Nehemiah 8:13-18). These "huts" or "booths" were constructed The Feast of the Tabernacle from bulrushes as joyful reminders of the temporary housing erected by their forefathers during the Exodus wanderings (Leviticus 23:40-41; Deuteronomy 16:14). The "booth" in Scripture is a symbol of protection, preservation, and shelter from heat and storm (Psalm 27:5; 31:20; Isaiah 4:6). The rejoicing community included family, servants, orphans, widows, Levites, and sojourners (Deuteronomy 16:13-15). Besides the construction of the booths, other festivities included the ingathering of the labor of the field (Exodus 23:16), the ingathering of the threshing floor and winepress (Deuteronomy 16:13), and the ingathering of the fruit of the earth (Leviticus 23:39), Samples of the fall crop were hung in each family's booth to acknowledge God's faithfulness in providing for His people. On the eighth and final day of the feast, the high priest of Israel, in a great processional made up of priests and tens of thousands of worshipers, descended from the Temple Mount to pause briefly at the Pool of Siloam. A pitcher was filled with water, and the procession continued via a different route back to the Temple Mount. Here, in the midst of great ceremony, the high priest poured the water out of the pitcher onto the altar. Since in Israel the rains normally stop in March, there is no rain for almost seven months! If God does not provide the "early" rains in October and November, there will be no spring crop, and famine is at the doorstep. This ceremony, then, was intended to invoke God's blessing on the nation by providing life-giving water. It is in connection with the Feast of Tabernacles and this eighth day that the gospel of John records a fascinating event. John wrote: "In the last day (eighth day), that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water" (John 7:37-38). The Son of God was saying in the clearest possible way that He alone was the source of life and blessing; that He could meet every need of the human heart. Another ritual included the lighting of huge Menorahs at the Court of the Women. This is the probable background for Jesus' statement: "I am the light of the world." John 8:12). The water and the "pillar of light" provided during the wilderness wandering (when people dwelt in tabernacles) was temporary and in contrast to the continuing water and light claimed by Jesus during this feast which commemorated that wandering period. The eschatological visions which speak of the coming of all nations to worship at Jerusalem refer to the Feast of Tabernacles on the occasion of their pilgrimage (Zechariah 14:16-21). This feast speaks eloquently of Christ's millennial Kingdom - of a new beginning without the ravages of the curse of sin. In that day, the earth will give her full bounty, all animals will be docile (Isaiah 65:25), armies will no longer march, every man will sit under his own fig tree (Micah 4:4), and righteousness will become a reality in the earth.

The Scottish Rite Masonic Story The Scottish Rite is a world wide Masonic Fraternity with a system of degrees which elaborate and supplement by ritual, drama and allegory the content of the first three degrees of Craft Masonry. The whole of Canada constitutes a single Scottish Rite jurisdiction with some 27,000 members. In this country the term "Scottish Rite" is a short form for "The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Canada". There are several theories as to the origin of the Scottish Rite, but, as Masonry evolved in France in the second quarter of the 18th century numerous degrees were added to the two, and later three, degrees conferred in English Craft Masonry. Lodges in France conferring these additional degrees appear to have been frequented by gentlemen, mainly Scots, who were adherents of the Stuarts, and who were planning for their restoration to the throne of England. Hence these lodges became known as Ecossais or Scottish lodges. Many of the new degrees soon passed into oblivion, but in time twenty-two were selected to compose, with the three Craft degrees a Rite of Perfection, governed by Grand Regulations issued in By the Grand Constitutions enacted in 1786 a further eight degrees were added to complete the present system of thirty-three degrees. It was the Grand Constitutions which brought "The Ancient and Acce3pted Scottish Rite" into formal existence. Bodies of the Rite of Perfection had been established in the West Indies as early as 1762, and on the continent of North America at New Orleans in Then in 1901 a Supreme Council was opened in Charleston, South Carolina under the Grand Constitutions, absorbing the existing Rite of Perfection. This Supreme Council subsequently issued warrants for other Supreme Councils. All regular Supreme Councils of today are descended directly or indirectly from this Supreme Council now know as the Supreme Council Southern Jurisdiction, United States of America. In 1813 the Southern Jurisdiction established the Supreme Council for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States, which comprises the fifteen north-eastern states. In 1845 the Northern Masonic jurisdiction warranted a Supreme Council for England and Wales which, in turn, in 1874 authorized the formation of the Supreme Council of Canada. In 1964 our Supreme Council caused to be incorporated The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada, which funds research into the causes and hopefully eventual cure of intellectual disability, initially as it affects children and later, as well, as it affects persons of advanced years in the form of Alzheimer's Disease. prepared by PSGC, Ill.Bro. Although there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite serve to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge. A Mason who chooses to further his Masonic experience by becoming a 32 Scottish Rite Mason will be expanding upon the fundamental principles of Freemasonry. The moral and ethical lessons will allow him to be constantly reminded of his duty to God, Family, Country, and Fellow Man.
