2 Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in the United States in 1937, though people have celebrated Columbus' voyage since the colonial period. In 1792, New York City and other U.S. cities celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event. During the four hundredth anniversary in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress. Catholic immigration in the mid-19 th century induced discrimination from anti-immigrant activists. Like many other immigrant communities, Catholics developed organizations to fight discrimination and provide insurance for the struggling immigrants. The predominately-irish immigrants who organized themselves as the Knights of Columbus, chose that name in part because it saw Christopher Columbus as a fitting symbol of Catholic immigrants' right to citizenship: one of their own, a fellow Catholic, had discovered America. Many Italian-Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage, the first oc- From the Secretary By Charrison Lochaby, 33 The History of Columbus Day casion being in New York City on October 12, Columbus Day was first enshrined as a legal holiday in the United States through the lobbying of Angelo Noce, a first generation Italian, in Denver. The first statewide Columbus Day holiday was proclaimed by Colorado governor Jesse F. McDonald in 1905, and it was made a statutory holiday in 1907 In April 1934, as a result of lobbying by the Knights of Columbus, Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made October 12 a federal holiday under the name Columbus Day. Since 1970, the holiday has been fixed to the second Monday in October, coincidentally the same day as Thanksgiving in neighboring Canada (which was fixed to that date in 1959) (note that October 12, 1970, was a Monday). It is generally observed nowadays by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal Service, other federal agencies, most state government offices, many businesses, and most school districts. Some businesses and some stock exchanges remain open, also some states and municipalities abstain from observing the holiday. The traditional date of the holiday also adjoins the anniversary of the United States Navy (founded October 13, 1775), and thus both occasions are customarily observed by the Navy (and usually the Marinc Corps as well) with either a 72 or 96-hour liberty period. 3 I was getting ready to submit my article to the various publications throughout the state when something stopped me from transmitting that article. After the events of the last few days, I have decided to re-write my article in an effort to explain to all reading what it is Masonic Outreach Services does for the aging members of the Fraternity. In the past few weeks, I have worked with two Brothers who were not aware of the services we provide and were struggling, with great frustration, to handle some very emotional and complicated situations on their own. Both of these Brothers were assisting another Brother who is/was dying from cancer. Neither knew about the services Medicare and the state of Washington could offer the ailing Brother nor what Masonic Outreach Services could do to help. I am going to use these situations as examples of what Masonic Outreach Services (MOS) can provide. Let s take the case of the first Brother. He was trying very hard to meet the wishes of the dying Brother which were to attend one more Lodge meeting and to pass away at home. Well, the Lodge meeting was taken care of seamlessly. The other request was trying to be met just by Brothers in the Lodge who might have a little time to be with the dying Brother at home. Hospice was called in but they are only with a dying person for a few hours a week. However, they want someone to be with the person on Hospice 24/7, so a valiant attempt was made to schedule members of this Brother s lodge to be Masonic Outreach Services By Mary Craves Hollands, Director with the dying Brother. Had I known about this situation a little sooner, we would have explored the Medicaid/COPES program to see if he might have qualified for a program I have written about before called COPES. The COPES program will pay for someone to come into a person s home to provide care for several hours a day. The program can even reimburse a caregiver who has to be there 24/7. It is not a lot of money, but it would have reimbursed someone to be there more than the Lodge brothers were able to be there. Then the Lodge Brothers and Outreach Services could pick up the extra uncovered hours. Of course this would mean dealing with the state, but we here at Masonic Outreach Services are experts at doing just that. The second Brother was trying to carry the burden of his dying friend and Brother all by himself. He was very angry and frustrated because there was no one to help coordinate services. His dying Brother is in a facility that he is not happy with, so he feels he needs to be with this Brother all of the time. In this situation, we would explore the dying Brother s income and assets to see if he would be eligible for Medicaid/ COPES/VA. The next step would be to try to find a facility that was better equipped to give this dying Brother the care he deserves. Perhaps an Adult Family Home where there are no more than six residents. He certainly would get more attention and would have his needs met more quickly. We have lists of Adult Family Homes (Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Homes as well) and will even go out and make a visit to investigate whether the home is suitable or not. Probably the most important service we provide is creating a plan then assisting in executing and keeping that plan in place. We know how to navigate the system and get things accomplished. When one person with knowledge and connections heads up a group of folks trying to do the right thing, miracles can happen. We see them happen all of the time. I hope telling you about these Brothers has helped you to understand better what we do. For more information or to refer someone for our services, please call Mary Craves- Hollands at / Ext.101 or mcraveshollands@mrcwa.org. We are here for all aging members of the Fraternity, their wives and widows. 5 TEDDY ROOSEVELT AND THE VALUE OF MASONRY Theodore Roosevelt was the twenty-sixth President of the United States and a Master Mason, raised in Matinecock Lodge No806 in Oyster Bay, New York. There are many stories about his involvement with the Masonic fraternity. His friends and close associates preferred to call him Colonel, a reminder of his days serving with the Rough Riders in the Philippines during the Spanish American War. The following story can be found in John J. Leary's book Talks with T.R., (pages ) published in Colonel Roosevelt was a Mason, and in a quiet way an enthusiastic one. He was a frequent attendant at Matinecock Lodge in Oyster Bay in which he was raised. When in foreign parts, particularly in out-of-the-way places, he made it a rule, when possible, to visit the local lodges. He was as thorough in his Masonry as he was in other things, as witnessed by Harry Russell, who assisted in his initiation. "When," says Russell, "the Colonel came up for examination he was letter perfect - hanged if he did not have the work better than his conductor, for he corrected him in an error." Talking of Oyster Bay affairs at his home one afternoon the Colonel touched on this phase of his activities. "As you know," he said, turning to me, "I am a member of the local lodge of Masons. You also know, brother, I violate no secret when I say that one of the greatest values in Masonry is that it affords an opportunity for men in all walks of life to meet on common ground, where for the time all men are equal and have one common interest." "For example, when I was President, the master was Worshipful Brother Doughty (Duthie), gardener on the estate of one of my neighbors, and a most excellent public-spirited citizen, with whom I liked to maintain contact. Clearly I could not call upon him when I came home. It would have embarrassed him. Neither could he, without embarrassment, call on me. In the lodge it was different. He was over me, though I was President, and it was good for him and good for me. "I go to the lodge, and even the folks who do not belong to or believe in the order, rather like it that I should go. They seem to feel it's part of the eternal fitness of things. Whenever I return from one of my journeys I always go there to tell of the lodges I have visited, in Nairobi in Africa, in Trinidad, or the quaint little lodge I found away up on the Ascension River. They sort of feel I am their representative to these lodges, and they like it. There's a real community of interest. "It's the same way with Mrs. Roosevelt. She is an Episcopalian, you know, and belongs to a guild named after a saint - Saint Hilda, I believe. She frequently has the members here. She had them at the White House on several occasions. There's no social rank in the guild, no distinction - the brakeman's wife or the butcher's wife, the equal of her neighbor, and all are comfortable. You see, they have a common interest. "That is the way to make people work together. Get them on common ground; get them together through some interest in common. There social lines fade out and you get results." 6 The origin of the Feast of Tishri (also known as the Feast of the Tabernacle) is described in the Old Testament where it is said that the Lord spoke unto Moses saying when "ye [shall] have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days:... [and] Ye shall dwell in booths seven days... That your generations may know that I made of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt" (Leviticus 23:39, 42-43). Why the Feast of Tishri? The origins and significances of the Feast of Tishri make it the most Scottish Rite of festivals. Although originally celebrated as a harvest and gathering festival, no other occasion epitomizes the character and purpose of the Rite more wholly than our historic celebration, held in conjunction with the dedication of King Solomon's Temple (2 Chronicles 7:8-10). To marshal the meanings of the feast is to summarize the principal ideals and traditions of our Fraternity. First of all, we observe the Feast of Tishri because it is an age-old custom which now has the power of law. Under thee Statutes of the Supreme Council, the feast is considered an obligatory observance, a sharing of our fraternal spirit. Secondly, the rich legendry of the Temple's dedication, held in connection with the Feast of Tishri, is an essential part of the Fourteenth degree. The symbolic details of the Temple's position, design, construction, furnishing, and decoration carry special meaning as they apply to the Feast of Tishri metaphorical temple of Freemasonry built in the heart of every Brother. Through the symbols of the Temple, we learn to recommit ourselves to building Freemasonry "in the hearts of men" and among nations. Significantly, Solomon, a king of peace and wisdom, built the Temple. The Lord... delivered this responsibility and glory to Solomon, whose very name derives from the Hebrew word shalom, meaning peace. Thus in observing the Feast of Tishri, we reaffirm our dedication to human concord and the brotherhood of all men in a world of peace. As individuals and Brothers in the Rite, we resolve to build, as Solomon did, through harmony and cooperation, ever seeking peace for all mankind. The consecration of the Temple must be observed at the Feast of Tishri because it teaches the equality and unity of all members of the Rite. The people of Israel, unified under Solomon, were equal in their devotion to the Lord and equal in their sovereignty to all other nations. In the Feast of Tishri, all Perfect Elus and those of higher Degrees can join at the banquet table and share the bond of fraternal unity. Yet another reason to keep the Feast of Tishri is that such observance fosters the spirit of fellowship... Within the context of the Feast of Tishri, we realize more deeply than ever before the value of our fellowmen, without which the individual is lost in a selfimposed prison of human isolation. Finally, the law, legendry, peace, equality, unity and fellowship of the Feast of Tishri combine to make this the Masonic feast of feasts. At the reflection table, all men - Jew, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and others - join in a common voice of thanksgiving where every man can share his gratitude and express his sincere thanks to Him who made all things. The Deity has given us life, the strength to live it fully, and the joy of sharing the beauty and goodness of His creation with our fellowmen. Most of all, He has given us freedom. The Feast of Tishri celebrates this freedom which the Israelites won with the guidance of Providence, despite the shackles of Egypt and the armies of the Philistines. This ancient victory celebrated in the dedication of King Solomon's Temple is kept forever fresh through our keeping of the Feast of Tishri. It promises to all men that the burdens of tyranny are temporary, that the darkness will yield to light, that knowledge will conquer ignorance, and that the Creator intended all men to be free. The message of Tishri comes to us strongly and clearly from across the ages because it has been so preserved in the symbolism and allegory of the Scottish Rite. Through our observance of this great feast of thanksgiving, we, as heirs of Solomon, perpetuate his magnificent Temple of freedom in our lives, our communities, our country and, most of all, in our beloved Rite. -Scottish Rite Ritual Monitor and Guide, Third Edition by Arturo De Hoyos

7 Masonic Education FREEMASONRY & TEAMWORK Heart Lodge #1 [Appeared in Scottish Rite Journal of Freemasonry Southern Jurisdiction USA as Heart Lodge #1] It started in the dark. Now seven hearts are standing at the base of an ever-upward, ever-widening spiral. Their petition to the Highest of Hearts that they may establish and maintain a group of hearts to function as one heart more powerful than the individual hearts which compose it was granted in the form of a sphere twelve feet in diameter, with instructions, which clearly stated that their only mission is to roll the sphere, ( as far as they can ), up the spiral on the track provided for it. Thus the Highest of Hearts, in its infinite wisdom and love, conceived of a way that all hearts everywhere would benefit. They started their mission immediately. Their enthusiasm energized their striving. They soon learned something wonderful. Their striving was the key to their achievement, without it, the sphere would not move. Every time they moved the sphere higher, it took more energy than the preceding time. This individual heart energy mysteriously seemed to be transferred to the sphere, for the higher up they pushed it on the turns of the spiral the more the sphere glowed. Their striving served them well, and they moved the sphere up to the seventh turn of the spiral. The light it emitted had gradually increased to that point where it could illumine a Lodge room for hearts. The seven hearts were beginning to understand that the light of their striving was accumulating in the sphere. This light, (they learned from experience), was saturated with the protective qualities of wisdom, strength and beauty. In their enthusiasm the hearts at first concluded that the sphere would accumulate their light of striving and that this light of striving would only increase and never diminish in the sphere, (but there was more to learn about Light). It was on the occasion of their first discussion. The hearts were not in agreement as to why their mission was to roll the sphere up the spiral track. Confusion manifested among them and they allowed their minds to become focused on the details of their confusion. In retrospect, their first indication that something was wrong should have been when the light of the sphere began to slowly and consistently blink. But they were so identified with their own personal points of view that they paid little attention to the warning signs of the sphere. Each heart began to feel very strongly about their ideas and just couldn't understand why the other hearts didn't feel the same way. The blinking of the light in the sphere became increasingly faster as the emotional intensity of their argument increased. Some noticed the blinking increase, but felt that the winning of the argument was more important. The emotional intensity became stronger between the hearts and they were now speaking towards each other with obvious lack of mutual respect. So involved were they that only one of them noticed that the sphere began to gradually roll backwards down the spiral and was diminishing in the intensity of its light, but even this discerning heart figured that there was plenty of time to win the argument before any real problem developed with the sphere. After all, the heart thought, what's more important? The sphere continued to roll backwards and diminish in light until finally one heart noticed the dimness of the light and out-shouted all the others to direct their attention to the sphere. Six of the hearts stopped arguing and moved to prevent the sphere from rolling any further back down the spiral. But when they tried to roll the sphere back up the spiral to where it was, they did not have enough energy to get the sphere moving. Their enthusiasm had all but disappeared, and they were now using the energy of their concern for the loss of the fruit of their labor, which, as they soon found out, was much less powerful than their enthusiasm. The six hearts did, however, stop the sphere from rolling backwards any further. It was now back on the fourth turn of the spiral. They hailed the seventh heart to come and help them, but the seventh heart was so upset that the other six hearts would not agree with the seventh's point of view that the seventh heart just could not bring itself to cooperate with the other hearts. After all, what's more important? The six hearts did not know what to do. sphere unattended for it would roll back down the spiral and all would again be in darkness. They could not move up the spiral because that, (they were finding out from experience), required all seven hearts to work together enthusiastically in mutual respect. The hearts were very experienced in winning arguments for personal satisfaction and self gain, but it was very apparent that they were not experienced in working together in mutual respect for a common goal. This was a new challenge, perhaps a gift of experience from the higher --- a stepping stone to...what? Ah! One heart started to remember why they were there in the first place. The petition was remembered and shared out loud. It was to establish and maintain a group of hearts to function as one heart, a heart more powerful than the individual hearts which composed it. Now all of the hearts began to think about their original petition to The Highest of Hearts, even the seventh heart. They began to focus on the meaning of their petition and on the heart itself. The hearts were starting to remember about the qualities of heart and how those qualities manifest in personality and character. Each of them remembered their commitment to purify their hearts in order to maximize their service to all Mankind. (Continued on page 8)

8 (Continued from page 7) They gradually began to smile and lessen their identification with their being right and winning the argument and thus began to re-focus on their mission to roll the sphere up the everwidening, ever-upward spiral. The seventh heart joined the other six at the sphere and all began to push. It didn't move. They tried again, it didn't budge. Then the seventh heart said, "Let us be grateful for each others companionship and being allowed and able to work together in increasing the light of our Lodge." The hearts began to glow as they heard these words and renewed their efforts to push the sphere. The sphere increased its glow. The hearts knew it would soon move upward in the spiral and began to push enthusiastically. The sphere glowed brighter and began to move upward. The hearts were again experiencing happiness in their united efforts. They were working in harmony and making good progress to-ward achieving their mission. They were now, after months of intense striving, much higher in the turns of the spiral. The light of the sphere was very beautiful. But the seventh heart couldn't hold it in any longer, and allowed vanity to speak its confusion out loud. "I knew it. I knew I was right about the sphere. Our gratitude powers the sphere.". The second In Memorial heart said, "No. It is enthusiasm which powers the sphere. "No. It's gratitude. I was right all along." The third heart said, "I agree with the idea that enthusiasm powers our sphere.". "Your all wrong", said the fourth heart, "Brotherly love powers our sphere, and there can be no doubt about it." Thus on the seventy seventh turn of the spiral another argument began among the hearts and they gradually slowed their efforts and became once again more interested and focused on being right and winning the argument and less focused on their mission. The hearts stopped, let go of the sphere, and began shouting their reasons with such increasing emotional intensity that their words were as bullets. An hour passed without a pause. The sphere blinked its first warning. The fifth heart saw the sphere begin its slow and consistent warning blinks, and tried to tell the other hearts. But they just thought that the fifth heart was trying to get the best of the argument by out-shout-ing the rest of the hearts. This, of course, the other hearts could not allow, and they got together and out-shouted the fifth heart in such a way that they never heard the warning of the fifth heart that the sphere would soon roll backwards and diminish in light. After all, what was more important? Members of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Everett are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the following Brother Byron J.
