Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Ill. Wayne I. Smith, 33 Personal Representative of the S.G.I G. (360) Orient of Washington Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 Secretary 220 Olympic Blvd Everett, WA (888) Toll Free Volume 20 OCTOBER 2011 Issue 10 THE RITE BULLETIN NOW IS THE TIME By Ill Bro, Wayne Smith We are nearly finished conferring degrees on this year s class of candidates and now is the time and Everett Valley is the place for our Masonic Brothers who desire More Light in Masonry. The Everett Valley Class of 2012 will begin on January 20, 2012 with the conferral of the 4 th degree. We have several meetings planned for October, November and December that are open and everyone including non- Scottish Rite Masons, Ladies and other guests that you can and should invite potential candidates to. First is the Feast of Tishri on the 14 th of October (RSVP required), then the 28 th of October when we will have a program showing the DVD of Patrick Henry s Give me Liberty or give death speech that he gave at the Second Virginia Convention in 1775 at St. John s Church in Richmond, VA. This of course laid the groundwork for our country. I have seen a reenactment when I was in Richmond a couple months ago and it is very moving. On the 11 th of November we have our annual Friends Night (RSVP required) and the program will be the Building of the Flag by our National Sojourner Brothers which provides some historical information about the flag of our Nation. On 18 November is our Cap and Ring Ceremony for this year s class (RSVP required for dinner). Last is on the 16 th of December which is our annual Christmas Party (RSVP required and the age and gender of each child is needed to insure Santa comes with suitable gifts). It is time to invite as many as possible and let them know what type of fellowship we enjoy as Scottish Rite Masons and how they may join us and partake of the important lessons that are obtained in Everett Valley Scottish Rite s University of Freemasonry. Our SGIG Ill. Brother William Miller has scheduled the second Orient of Washington Conference for the year on Saturday, 15 October, in Ellensburg and you all are invited to join us and the Brethren from though out the jurisdiction. The Conference begins at 10:00 and is usually finished by 3:00 or shortly before. These conferences are always interesting and provide light as to the various programs and plans for the future of Scottish Rite. RiteCare of Washington will be hosting the annual Beyond Words Fundraising Breakfast on October 25, 2011 at Seattle Scottish Rite Center, 1207 N 152 nd St, Seattle (Shoreline). The event is in honor of our 27th Anniversary and will benefit our Annual Fund. Last year Everett Valley sponsored a table for the breakfast and we filled it with 8 of our Scottish Rite Brothers. Please advise our Secretary if you would like to join us and have a seat at the Everett table. Let s all attend and support our Scottish Rite program of Helping Kids Speak.

The best laid plans of mice and men often goes astray and sometimes those plans just never materialize. This is partially true with our 2012 Dues Statements and Dues Cards. The 2012 Dues Statements and Cards were scheduled to be mailed by September 1 st. However there was a hitch in the dues process. In addition the Supreme Biannual Session, one hurricane and an earthquake all came and went within a short period of time. As a result the 2012 dues cards and statements are set back a month. They are now scheduled to be in the mail be the end of September. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this you have already received them. If you have, I suggest that you whip out your check book, write out your From The Secretary Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 check and put it in the mail. If you prefer, you may pay your dues by credit card. Go on line to the Supreme Web Site at scottishrite.org and then click on Member Programs. This will open a drop down menu and you will then click on Pay Your Dues Online. From there you follow the directions. Or you may go to the Everett Valley web site and pay your dues there. One thing about the mailing to remember is DO NOT THROW YOUR DUES CARD AWAY. In order to save time and money I m having the dues cards mailed with the statements with this caution..please do not put your dues card into your wallet until you have paid your dues. Not one person ever joined Masonry because Harry Truman was a Mason. Not one person ever joined because of any of our great Masonic heroes. Joining doesn't make you any of those people. Not one person ever joined in order to give a million dollars a day to charity, or homes, or crippled children. You don't have to be a member to give money. Not one person ever joined because our ritual is outstanding, or our minutes are accurate, or a hundred other things we worry about. They don't know about our ritual. They joined because someone they knew and admired was a Mason. It could have been a father, a friend, a man down the street, or someone a thousand miles away. Who, it didn't matter. They admired him and wanted to do the things he did, and they did it by the millions. Want to help our growth? Be the kind of man someone admires. Someone will notice. Wandel The Feast of Tishri On Friday, October 14, 2011, the Valley of Everett Scottish Rite will have it s annual celebration of the Feast of Tishri. We enjoy the Feast of Tabernacles, called by the Jews, Sukkoth or Booths. Scholars tell us that this is the oldest feast in the Jewish calendar. It was and is a harvest feast but it has had so many additional traditions and connotations added to it that it has become perhaps the most important of the great pilgrim feasts. Originally, before there was a Jewish faith or even an Abrahamic faith, people in the Middle East celebrated three major festivals -- The Feast of Unleavened Bread, The Feast of the First Fruits, and The Harvest Feast. God first changed the meaning of these three feasts in the Torah. To the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which had been a feast to celebrate the lambing, was added Passover and the Exodus. To the Feast of the First Fruits was added the connotation of the First Fruit of the Exodus, which was the Torah. To the last Feast, Sukkoth, was added the Feast of the Gentile Nations and the Rejoicing in the Law. Zechariah 14:16 proclaims that the Feast of Sukkoth will be the only feast that survives the coming of the Meshiach. The reason for its survival will be its nature as the Feast of the Gentiles. Sukkoth is a time of Thanksgiving. It is the time when we thank God for his many blessings of the past year. The Gentiles need to thank God for a good harvest and a good year as well; thus the feast of Sukkoth is the proper time for Thanksgiving. In America, before it was changed by FDR to November, Thanksgiving was celebrated in October. Likewise, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry has the obligatory feast of Tishri during the month of Tishri, the Holy Month of the Jews. Our Pilgrim Fathers likewise celebrated Sukkoth and in recognition of the Gentile nature invited the Indians to come to the feast. Jews everywhere invite Gentiles to come to their Sukkoth celebrations. One of the most important traditions of this feast is the command to live in temporary structures, called Booths. This helps us to recognize that our forefathers were totally dependent upon God to provide for us during the Exodus. Likewise, we are still dependent on Him for our daily bread, for our jobs, for our children, for our lives, and for peace in the world. There is no security except in God. He is our Savior. By living in these Booths, we teach our children and remind ourselves of the transient nature of life and the eternal grace of our Father in Heaven. It is interesting that in ancient times, on the first seven days of the feast 69 bullocks were offered in holocaust to God, one for each of the Gentile nations. What other religion offers sacrifices and prayers for each of the Gentile nations, all of which hate them? Yet Jews are taught by this feast to love their enemies even when they are reviled by them. This year as in every year, we will offer thanksgiving offerings for the Arabs and Edomites or Palestinians or closest relatives, even though they hate us. Jesus made the Feast of Sukkoth a time of teaching. John 7:14 and after gives his sermons during that feast. Moses was not accepted even though he offered signs to Pharaoh and to the Jews. Jesus says that he offers signs as a sign that his authority comes from the Most High, but the people still do not believe him. Likewise, we say we believe in the authority of Jesus but we do not do what he says. Another tradition of Sukkoth is set forth in the Torah. "And you shall take for yourselves on the First Day the fruit of a beautiful tree, the branches of date palms, branches of the myrtle tree, and branches of the willow tree, and you shall rejoice before Hashem, your God, for Seven Days." (Leviticus 23:40) The "Etrog," the Citron, resembles in its shape, the heart, the driving force behind all our actions. The "Lulav," the Palm Branch, resembles the spine, which holds the body together and, without which; we would be unable to move. The "Hadasim," the Myrtle Branches, resemble, in their almond-shape, the eyes, with which we behold God's World. And the "Aravot," the Willow Branches, resemble the lips, with which we give expression to our thoughts and feelings. Thus we are taught that thanksgiving must come from the whole being. The spirituality of Sukkoth teaches us that we must truly be dependent and thankful for the blessings.

Masonic Outreach Services by Mary Craves Hollands In an attempt to bring you relevant services that make your life a little easier, your Masonic Outreach Services is now prepared to assist Veterans in finding funding for many long term care services. One payment source for Veterans is called Aid and Attendance. The Veterans Administration offers Aid and Attendance as part of an "Improved Pension" Benefit that is largely unknown. This benefit provides additional monetary benefits to Veterans and surviving spouses who require the regular attendance of another person to assist with certain activities of daily living. It also includes individuals who are blind or a patient in a nursing home because of mental or physical incapacity. Assisted care in an Assisted Living facility or adult Family Home also qualifies. This benefit is often overlooked by many families with Veterans or surviving spouses who need additional monies to help care for ailing parents or loved ones. This benefit IS NOT dependent upon service-related injuries for compensation. A Veteran is eligible for up to $1,632 per month, while a surviving spouse is eligible for up to $1,055 per month. A couple is eligible for up to $1,949 per month. Any War-Time Veteran with 90 days of active duty, 1 day beginning or ending during a period of War, is eligible to apply for the Aid & Attendance Improved Pension. A surviving spouse (marriage must have ended due to death of veteran) of a War-Time Veteran may also apply. The individual applying must qualify both medically and financially The following are the periods of wartime designated by Congress for pension purposes. To be considered by the VA to have served during wartime, a veteran need not have served in a combat zone, but simply been serving during one of these designated periods: Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Mexican Border War, World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam Era (August 5, 1964, through May 7, however, February 28, 1961, through May 7, 1975, for a veteran who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period) and the Persian Gulf War (August 2, 1990, through a date to be prescribed by Presidential proclamation or law). Congress has not enacted legislation that would make the periods covering the Lebanon crisis or the invasions of Grenada and Panama wartime service. To qualify medically, a War-Time Veteran or surviving spouse must need the assistance of another person to perform daily tasks, such as eating, dressing, undressing, taking care of the needs of nature, etc. Being blind or in a nursing home for mental or physical incapacity, or residing in an assisted living facility also qualifies. Eligibility must be proven by filing the proper Veterans Application for Pension or Compensation. This application will require a copy of DD-214 or separation papers (WWII), Medical Evaluation from a physician, current medical issues, net worth limitations, and net income, along with out-ofpocket Medical Expenses. To qualify financially, an applicant must have on average less than $80,000 in assets, EXCLUDING their home and vehicles. If you have assets in excess of this limit, please contact your Masonic Outreach Services for information about reducing your countable assets. If you are a Veteran, Veteran s Spouse or Surviving spouse who qualifies for this benefit and you need assistance with the proper procedure to include yourself in this valuable pension program, please contact Masonic Outreach Services at / Ext 101 or mcraves-hollands@mrcwa.org and let us assist you. If you are a family member of a veteran or their spouse, please contact us for further information as well. WE ARE DREAMERS BY Dewey H. Wollstein, PGM, 32, KCCH Nothing great has been achieved unless the pattern has first been conceived in the mind and heart. Call it what you will- Vision, Dream, or Designs upon the Trestle Board, it is the same. In that sense, we Masons are Dreamers. Long ago Masons set forth the outline of a noble dream, and every Mason has had his part in bringing about the reality. There is the dream of Universal Brotherhood, not the superficial condition in which men glibly use the words with insincere piety and say: "If you do as I do, we will be brothers; If you believe as I do we will be brothers." Masonry's dream of Universal Brotherhood will become a reality through study, through patience, through Unfaltering Trust, and through the knowledge that Brotherhood is a Fact in Nature. Such a condition will result when we gain the ultimate wisdom that religion, science, and philosophy, form the trinity which will unite men. Do we not refer to Masonry as the Science of Morality? We do not say that Masonry is a religion, but who will say that Masonry is not an expression of the best in all religious teachings? We are Dreamers. The dream in the minds and hearts of Jefferson, Franklin, and Washington, became the United States of America. They visioned a condition wherein man would no longer be a puppet, but would walk forth in the Light of Freedom. Yes, we are Dreamers. We dream of a time when our hospitals for the mentally ill will be emptied. We dream of a time when no child will be born into a world of hate, prejudice, of war. We dream of a time when no child will be denied love, shelter, spiritual training, and the opportunity for intellectual development. We dream of a time when man will live in the positive knowledge of the unerring accuracy of Moral and Spiritual Laws. As we dream we work, and as surely as we work, hope and pray, the Great Dream will come true.

October 2011 Degree Schedule BY Kenneth Thompson, 32, KCCH SPES MEA IN DEO EST "MY HOPE IS IN GOD" 32 - Master of the Royal Secret The lessons taught in this degree are that genuine brotherhood requires mutual regard, opinion, esteem and charity. We always look for the good in all and make allowances for other's shortcomings. We trust the Supreme Architect to lead us to friendship, morality and brotherly love. The apron of this degree is white, lined in black, with a double-headed eagle and a plan of the Camp of the Princes. The jewel worn is a golden Teutonic Cross. In the center are the letters XXXII, surrounded by a green wreath. The cap of a Master of the Royal Secret is black silk with a black band trimmed in gold. In the center front is a double-headed eagle emblem with a rayed equilateral triangle above in gold. The triangle is red, has 32 in its center and is trimmed with gold. The duties are: a Soldier of the Light seeks truth and knowledge; a Soldier of Freedom demands for the people free vote and voice and attains freedom of voice, vote and opinion for himself; a Soldier of the True Religion combats spiritual tyranny with reason and truth; a Soldier of the People encourages men to be selfreliant and independent; a Soldier of Scottish Rite Masonry is zealous and ardent in the performance of his duties to God, his country, his family, his brethren and himself. Scottish Rite Education Guideposts to the upcoming degrees for the Valley of Everett The historical/mythological association is the Egyptian Court of the Dead. The 32 is the end of the Quest, so far as instruction in the Rite is concerned. But be aware that we must constantly strive for improvement in all areas reviewed by the Rite. We must serve Truth, Faith, the People, Honor, our Scottish Rite teachings, and our own destiny. The great secret of the universe is equilibrium. There is an ultimate and universal equilibrium in all things since we are all part of the same Source of All That Is. In Truth, all things work in balance. When that balance is upset, it is our task to help set it right. Our duty in the world is the duty to understand and maintain balance and equilibrium in our life. I know this has been a rather long explanation; more than you asked for. But I m sure you will agree it is important that we understand these things so that the Rite has meaning in our life. These are valuable concepts and lessons which we should integrate into our own lives. There is a profound relevancy to Masonry; and it is being lost because men do not under- stand it s mission. The Scottish Rite is clearly a school of ethical and philosophical instruction. We are engaged in the business of teaching men about the quest of this life. We seek to prove that there is a synthesis in religion, or between religion and spirituality. There is indeed a level of perfection that exists for us in another place, or state of being. Our lessons are aimed at a greater hope which comes from our faith in that which cannot be fully understood, but which still requires that we know how to love unconditionally. The Scottish Rite is engaged in recognizing there is a quest in life and our aim lies in working out this quest in a way that is right in the world. But it does not deny that man must have a faith that there is a plan associated with this quest which leads to eternal life. There is a divine Truth which provides for our own eternal bliss. Is this not stuff worthy of our thoughtful study and reflection? I think that it is; and hope that others may become serious students on the path. For now, I remain. In Memorial Members of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Everett are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the following Brother Herbert F. Andrews This Brother has been called to the Great Celestial Lodge above by the Supreme Architect of the Universe. He lived respected and died regretted. Farewell My Brother, Until We Meet Again

A POINT WITHIN A CIRCLE By Wor. Bro. S. L. Waterman Many students regard the symbol of the point within a circle as belonging exclusively to the Third Degree; but if we go back to the old lectures - current in the 1880's and even more recently - we find that this symbol enters into the explanation of the First Tracing Board, and further, is referred to in the 6th section of the 1st lecture. It figures on many of the old First Degree Tracing Boards, and the lectures tell us that "in all regular, well-informed constituted lodges, there is a point within a circle from which a Mason cannot err; this circle is bounded North and South by two grand parallel lines, the one representing Moses, the other King Solomon; on the upper part of the circle rests the V.S.L. which supports Jacob's ladder - the top of which reached to heaven." The point within a circle is a remarkable emblem; but let us look first at the circle itself. The circle having neither beginning nor end, is a symbol of the Deity and of eternity and it follows that the compasses have been valued as being a means by which that perfect figure may be drawn. Everywhere in every age, the circle has been credited with magical properties and in particular has been thought to protect from external evil everything enclosed within it. Folklore contains countless instances of people, houses, places, threshed corn, etc., being protected by the simple means of describing a circle around them. The innocent child could be placed within a circle, in which it was thought to be safe from any outside malevolent influence. The virtues of the circle were also attributed to the ring, the bracelet, the ankle and the necklace which have been worn from earlier times, not only as orna- ments but as a means of protecting the wearer from evil influences. The completed emblem - the point within the circle - has been borrowed, consciously or otherwise from some of the earliest of the pagan rites, in which it represented the male and female principles and came in time to be the symbol of the sun and the universe. Phallic worship was common throughout the ancient world, simple people being naturally inclined to adopt as the foundation of their religion so great a mystery as the generative principle. The symbol came to be regarded as the sign of the Divine creative energy. Freemasonry adopted the symbol and easily gave it a geometrical explanation: Q. W h a t i s a c e n t r e? A. That point within a circle from which every part of the circumference is equally distant Q. Why in the centre? A. Because that is a point from which a M.M. cannot err. The ancient peoples in giving great religious prominence to phallic emblems apprehend no wrong in so doing. L.M. Child has said: "Reverence for the mystery of organized life led to the recognition of a masculine and feminine principle in all things spiritual or material.... the active wind was masculine, the passive or inert atmosphere was feminine... the sexual emblems conspicuous in the sculptures of ancient temples would seem impure in description, but no clean and thoughtful mind could so regard them..... the ancient worshipped the Supreme Being as the Father of men and saw no impurity in denoting with phallic emblems the kinship of mankind to the Creator." Some students hold that the point within the circle represented to the ancients the whole scheme of the universe, one point being the individual, or contemplator, and the circle the horizon. What is This World Coming To, and When Will It All End? "What is this world coming to, and when will it all end?... How often we hear that nowadays, frequently followed by, "Well, we can't do much about it," in atone of resignation. Certainly there is sufficient restlessness, and trouble about to cause a feeling of despair. But history does record many examples of men and women, who buoyed up by a clear and definite goal in life, have overcome difficulties and changed conditions of the time and place. Here we are then, Freemasons, here is your challenge. Reprinted from THE TRACING BOARD, G.L. of Saskatchewan , Contributed by David McCuistion, 32, KCCH, with permission of Phoenix Masonry.
