1 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Ill. Carl Smith, 33 Personal Representative of the S.G.I G. (360) Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 Secretary 220 Olympic Blvd Everett, WA (888) Orient of Washington - Valley of Everett Volume 22 February 2013 Issue 02 THE RITE BULLETIN From The Personal Representative Ill. Bro. Carl Smith On Friday, February 15 th, Everett Valley will celebrate Valentines Day with its annual Sweetheart Night Dinner. Valentine s Day is often celebrated with loved ones by exchanging cards, going out to dinner, and giving flowers. One flower that seems to be given more often than any other is the rose. The rose is not only a symbol of love and passion; it is a symbol of hope and joy. The Romans were very fond of roses. Cleopatra received Mark Anthony at one of her banquets in an apartment covered with rose petals. The rose, was dedicated by the Romans to Venus as the goddess of love. The rose is also often used as a symbol of commitment. Brethren, you might think about roses when you re trying to decide about what to give your sweetheart for Valentine s Day. As we all know the rose also has symbolic significance in Masonry. The Rose Cross is an emblem of the Rose Croix Degrees and a symbol of immortality. A rose represents Masonic virtues. It produces flowers in clusters of 3, 5 and 7. It produces leaves in quantities of 3, 5 and 7. It has thorns to protect it from the outside world, not unlike the point we first encounter when becoming a Mason. Its beauty is sublime, no perfection so apparent. We as Masons should not let the commonness of our surroundings dull our senses and become bored, even cynical, about the beauty of nature. Let us Stop and smell the Roses. Let us not let the distractions and cares of the world blind us to the beauty and order of our surroundings. These are God s gifts to our senses. Scottish Rite is His gift that enables us to seek additional Light, on all the lines of progress - moral, intellectual and spiritual. The Sweetheart Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with time to socialize around the punch bowl. Dinner will be served at 7:00 0 clock. The charge for the dinner will be $12.00 for the Brethren. The Ladies will be guests of the Valley. The Venerable Master, Brother Cary Cope promises an enjoyable Valentines celebration. Please give our Secretary, Illustrious Charrison Lochaby, 33, a call at or him at clochaby@whidbey.com to make reservations if you have not already signed-up so that proper preparations can be made. 2 Everett Valley Rite Care Partnership By Robert Dearborn, 32, KCCH Your Everett Valley of Scottish Rite Masons has made a MAJOR COMMIT- MENT to get involved with the Scottish Rite Rite Care speech program. This is NOT a fast nor inexpensive program. The Everett Valley has started a Rite Care partnership with Clear Speech, Inc (Carol Lorioux Loup) in Everett. We will be sponsoring one child two times a week for as long as it takes or until he reaches his 8 th birthday (the Rite Care program is for children from 2 7 years old). He had been going 1 time a week and it had been suggested that 2 to 3 times a week would be more appropriate for his development of speech and language skills. As this is the Valley s first foray into actually sponsoring a child and in developing an outside partnership: it was decided to start with one child and with one therapist. This way we could evaluate what we were doing: and if any changes needed to be made. The therapist chose the patient and the course of training needed to accomplish the task. We had Jackie Brown, of the Rite Care Clinic in Shoreline; evaluate the child and the course of proposed activity in Everett. She approved the method and activities to be done (she did say she [Jackie] does some things differently than Lorioux proposes both are totally within accepted guidelines). At the Sweetheart dinner in February, we will be having a speaker that had a daughter actually go through the Rite Care therapy program. This mother will be giving a first hand account of how the program works and the amazing results that she and her daughter had. The problems with speech and language that a child has, can tear a family apart another reason for us to be involved with the Rite Care program The first year of the program, we (the Everett Valley) will have to fund the program totally on our own. We need to develop some type of program, so that we will have a steady revenue stream for the funding. We feel we need to find some way of generating income from sources other than just the fraternity. Any suggestions that you might have will certainly be accepted and considered. This is A MAJOR LONG TERM COMMITMENT by the Valley: I don t know if anything of this magnitude has ever been accomplished by the members of the Valley of Everett, Scottish Rite. The members of the Valley of Everett extend to all the Brethren listed below, born in the month of February very Happy Birthday John E Aldrich John O Anderson Wayne C Betts Walter L Bisson Thomas R Booth Will Burge, III Edward Carlin Howard T Cromer Donald L DuBois Kenneth D Frank Tony L Gill Mark D. 3 Our good Bro. John Friesen was born in 1929 in Davison, Saskatchewan, Canada, later moving his family to the U.S.A. as his work took him here. He and Molly have 3 sons and 2 grandsons, living in various places around the United Stated and Canada. I believe he served in the Canadian military around the World War II era but seldom spoke of it, around me at least. I tried to get information to write an article about him for Scottish Rite, but in his typical self-effacing way, he said he really didn t want any article about him to be written. So I ll just have to do the best I can with the info I have at hand. Our Bro. John was actually quite accomplished in the construction field, as he was a retired project superintendent for the large engineering firm of Peter Kiewit sons, and had traveled all over the world as foreman of large construction projects, especially in New York, where he supervised a number of large tunnel projects for the New York subways. He was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in 1978 in Highlands Lodge #86, Denver, CO, but wasn t able to continue at that time. He petitioned Robert Burns Lodge # 243 in 1996 and completed his FC & MM degrees in John was enthusiastic and active in the Lodge. He was Marshal and Senior Steward , and then was our Building Manager during our lease of the strip mall property in east Lynnwood ( th SW, A-105) from 2000 to At that time we were constructing our facilities within the warehouse building and were still subletting to a number of our appendant organizations, so he had a big John Friesen, job, which was well done and appreciated by the Brethren! He received the Hiram award in 2001 and Did I mention that he served as our Treasurer for 12 years thru 2012? He and I worked together as the financial guys those years and I have many great memories of it. He was made an Honorary Past Master in 2010 for his many services to the Lodge. In the York Rite John was a member and officer of Fellowship Chapter #61, R.A.M. also Walter F. Meier Council #22, R.&S.M. in Bothell and had recently joined Seattle Commandery #2, K.T. in Shoreline. He was also active in Everett Valley of the Scottish Rite, where he served a number of years as Valley Almoner. He thought a lot of Masonry and his brethren, in turn, thought a lot of him! His family was informed about a year ago that he had liver cancer and that it was terminal. Many of us thought that he might be in remission because he often looked so good. But I got a call from Molly just after Christmas that he was taken to the hospital and it was close to the end. I was just leaving to visit family in southern Oregon, so couldn t check back till I returned in early January and found that he had passed away December 12, No services are planned here but the family will have a memorial service in Canada at a later date. In putting the word out I ve heard so many grateful and positive expressions about John from so many Brothers and friends. You are and will be missed a lot, my Brother and friend! 5 February/March 2013 Degree Schedule BY Kenneth Thompson, 32, KCCH February 8, 2013 The Brethren of the Valley of Everett will be performing the 5th and 6 th Degree. Here is the lesson of the 5th Degree. 5 - Perfect Master The degree teaches Masonic honor; that honesty and trustworthiness is the cornerstone of the foundation of such. This virtue should be in all of our undertakings with mankind. The apron of the 5th Degree is white and green, with a cubic stone and a Hebrew YOD. The jewel is represented by a compass open on a segment of a circle, to an angle of sixty degrees. The duties are honesty, sincerity, good faith and industry. 6 - Intimate Secretary In this degree one should expand their knowledge of duty, charity and toleration. We are instructed to reshape ourselves and our thinking into charity, self-control and success, i.e. to be a peacemaker. The apron of the 6th Degree is white and red, with Hebrew letters YOD HEH in the center and a small triangle containing the Hebrew letters (clockwise from top) BETH, NUN and SHIN. The gold triangle with the same three letters inscribed is the jewel that represents this degree February 22, Elu of the Nine (Elected Knight of the Nine): Scottish Rite virtues are at the very heart of this degree, truth, candor and generosity. We should use these to shape our lives and conduct. The apron is white, lined with black, and sprinkled with blood, with an arm holding a dagger, and a severed head held by the hair. The jewel is a dagger, hilt of gold and blade of silver 10 - Elu of the Fifteen (Illustrious Elect of the Fifteen): This degree teaches toleration of others. Everyone has the right to his own political or spiritual views. The apron is white, with a black flap, and with three arch-shaped gates -- over each a head on a spike. The jewel is a dagger as in the previous degree March 22, Master Architect This degree teaches faith in morality, virtue and God. "Life is what each man makes of it; the optimist turns a trial into a blessing". The apron of the 12th Degree consists of a white outer shell lined with blue and gold, symbolizing the Craft Degrees, with a protractor, plain scale, sector and compasses. The jewel is a heptagonal medal of gold. The duty is to seek wisdom through knowledge Royal Arch of Solomon (Knight of the Ninth Arch) Liberty in our mind and hearts and motivated by duty and honor are the lessons of this degree. The apron of the 13th Degree is purple, bordered with white and with the "Enochian delta" (hexagram with inscribed Tetragrammation) in the center. The jewel comprises a circular medal of gold. The duties are to seek knowledge and to be motivated by duty and honour. March 29, 2013 VIRTUS JUNXIT MORS NON SEPARABIT "WHOM VIRTUE UNITES DEATH SHALL NOT SEPARATE" 14 - Perfect Elu (Grand Elect, Perfect and Sublime Mason) This degree teaches us to reflect and scrutinize ourselves. We should strive to be true to ourselves and our God. The apron being of white silk, bordered in gold with the Ineffable Delta in the Center, is truly emblematical of the degree. The jewel of the 14th Degree is split; one being a quadrant (compass open to ninety degrees) topped by a crown and with a nine-pointed star on the obverse; the other being a fivepointed blazing star with the Tetragrammaton on the reverse. The compass is opened on a segment of a circle inscribed with the numbers 3, 5, 7, 9. The duties are to assist, encourage and defend the brethren; to protect the oppressed and relieve want and distress; to enlighten the people and serve the common good.

6 Life as a Mason's Wife: Is it Really Worth It? By Melissa Lee, Yahoo Contributor Network The life of a Mason's wife is not always an easy one. When your husband is first joining, there are many late nights alone. That is because he is either at the lodge or another Mason's house learning everything he needs to know in order to become a good Mason. Once that is completed, there are regular meetings. These usually occur twice a month. There are also other called meetings and events that they have going on. Many of the called meetings are arranged to work on the different causes and charities that all Masons are proud to support. These could be planning meetings or after the fact meetings to verify how everything went with an event that they completed. This also includes participating in the events that get scheduled, clean up afterward, and delivering items or money raised to where it needs to go. Plus there are the times when the officers of the lodge are installed into their offices, or when a Brother Mason passes away. The family can request the Masonic rites be performed during the funeral. During the majority of these, the wife is left at home to keep it running as it should. Sometimes, the wives are able to help and participate during the events themselves. This could include helping cook and serve at events like steak suppers or pancake breakfasts, or providing assistance at events like car shows or bake sale booths. Sometimes, they provide a Public Installation of the Officers where family and friends can witness their Mason get installed in any office he gets elected to. For the most part, however, all she will hear will be "Honey, I've got a lodge meeting tonight. I'll see you when I get home." Most wives will agree that it is worth it. When you look at all the good things Masons do, it makes it hard to hold it against the lodge. They support many charities and causes in their local areas. On a state scale, all of the lodges in Georgia help support the Masonic Children's Home. One thing that many Georgian Masons do is go there on a regular basis to help the children with schoolwork, to help keep the property where the Home is located in good shape, and become mentors to the children. Many of them keep up a direct contact with the children, from the time they get there to even after they are grown. Each lodge also supports causes in their local area, such as women's shelters and food banks for the needy. That is part of being a true Mason. It is said among Masons that "It takes a good man and make him better." Those could not be truer words. A true Mason always puts his best foot forward in everything he does. He puts his all into supporting his family. This starts with his wife. Even with everything else they do, in both their personal and Masonic life, Masons do their best to show their wives that they are special. The lodge usually makes sure to set aside at least one time a year to honor the lodge wives. At this time, the Masons do everything and will not even let the wives get near the kitchen. They do all the cooking, serving and cleanup while the wives get to sit there and watch. With all the good things the Masonic Lodges manage to do, is it any wonder that all Masonic wives are extremely proud to say: "I am a Wife of a Mason."

7 THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE By Br. Richard M. Kovak, 33 Roses are red, violets are blue. I am a freemason and so can be you. Anonymous (circa 1700 s). Like many legends, including the Masonic legends of our blue lodge and Scottish Rite degrees, the Legend of St. Valentine and its accompanying celebration on February 14 has a multifaceted history. Many people are astonished to learn that there have been several St. Valentines through the ages. Valentine seems to have been a popular name among Christian martyrs in early Rome. The two men most often mentioned as being the origin of the St. Valentine s Day legend are Valentine of Rome, a priest who was martyred about 269 CE and Valentine, bishop of Terni, who was martyred in the early 200 s CE. The Catholic Encyclopedia mentions a third Valentine who was martyred in Africa in this same time period, but no other information has been found about this man. St. Valentine s Day was established as a religious feast day by Pope Gelasius I in 496 CE, naming it for Valentine, the martyred priest of Rome. February 14 was likely chosen more as a convenience to fill out that month s roster of saints days because the exact date of his martyrdom in Rome is unknown. In 1969, Pope Paul VI caused this day to be deleted from the official Roman Catholic roster of saints days, but its religious observance was still permitted. And, of course, the commercial celebration of St. Valentine s Day, which probably began in Geoffrey Chaucer s time (1382 as referenced by him in the Parlement of Foules ) through his association of the religious observance of the day with romantic love, has become a worldwide phenomenon, ranking it up there with Christmas, Easter, Halloween and New Year s Day. Written or spoken couplets, rhymes and sentiments of romantic love or friendship on St. Valentine s day have been circulated throughout the centuries since Chaucer s famous lines of For this was Saint Valentine s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate. But the funny rhymes that we now associate with this day began in 1784 when the Gammer Gurton s Garland collection of nursery rhymes came out with: The rose is red, the violet s blue, The honey s sweet, and so are you; Thou art my love and I am thine, I drew thee to be my Valentine; The lot was cast and then I drew, And Fortune said it should be you. There has been little improvement of verse or romantic sentiment since that time. The English practice of sending printed Valentines began at the end of the 18 th century with handmade lace and ribbon Valentines gaining a huge popularity in England thereafter. This practice spread to the U.S. with paper lace and ribbon Valentines being mass produced by Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts in Since the 19 th century, handwritten cards have almost entirely given way to mass produced cards. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that 190 million Valentine cards are sent each year in the U.S. alone. The estimate of digital e- valentines sent in 2010 is 15 million and that number is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years with the addition of Valentine apps for digital hand held devices. Hiram Abif, King Solomon and the Holy Saints John may never achieve the commercial popularity of the Saints Valentine, but their legends and histories should be carefully studied to see what moral lessons and tips for living a good life can be found there. The Everett Valley of Scottish Rite invites all Masons to come, enroll in this year s degree program and study the 29 Scottish Rite degrees to gain more light in Masonry and more insight into what it means to live the morally good life. For you see, these degrees help explain and carry on the legends experienced in the three blue lodge degrees.further information about the Everett Scottish Rite Degree Program can be found elsewhere in the Bulletin.

9 Masonic Outreach Services By Mary Craves Hollands, Director We hope everyone has had a great start to In a continuing effort to educate our Masonic family members about resources available to them, we would like to once again tell you about the new Transitional Care Support Services housing program here at the MRC. One out of five elderly adults who are hospitalized will return to the hospital within 30 days. To try and address this problem, Masonic Outreach Services in partnership with the Masonic Retirement Center has developed this project to study the causes of frequent rehospitalizations and to lend support to those experiencing this problem. How does the program work? Our guests will stay on the campus temporarily in one of twelve ADA accessible apartments. The average stay will be between 4-8 weeks. While here they will be provided with accessible housing and Case Management. Case Management will be provided to ensure adequate post-discharge follow up and careful coordination between the inpatient and outpatient health care systems. The Case Manager will make an initial visit to the hospital to meet with the prospective guest and gather all of the discharge orders to create a plan for the guest s stay. In the case of out of area guests, the Case Manager will coordinate with the hospital discharge planner to have all appropriate paperwork faxed to them. Once here, the Case Manager will work with the guest to: 1. Arrange/provide assistance for the guest to manage their own medications to assist them in becoming more knowledgeable and independent in this area. This includes arranging for the reconciliation of the medications that were prescribed before the guest was admitted to the hospital against those that are ordered upon discharge. 2. Arrange for the oversight and teaching of the guest to monitor their own health condition. A Personal Healthcare Record will be set up with the guest where symptoms are discussed to help the guest identify red flags and what to do about them. 3. Assist the guests in setting up follow up care and arranging transportation for care that cannot be delivered onsite by Home Health agencies. Coordination with the guest s Primary Care Physician will be of utmost importance. 4. Assist the guest in practicing home safety by arranging instruction on fall risks in the home, identifying places they will need extra help when they return home and facilitating getting their own home ready for their return as well as arranging ongoing services. These interventions are based on research which identified where discharges from hospitals fail and why seniors return to the hospital. If one of our guests needs a caregiver or other services that are not included in the program, the Case Manager will ensure appropriate referrals are made to agencies who can deliver other types of assistance. If you or someone you know might be interested in this program or if you have any questions please feel free to contact Mary Craves-Hollands at / Ext. 101 or mcraveshollands@mrcwa.org.
