2 PAGE 2 TRESTLE BOARD NOVEMBER 2017 Masters Message Greetings one and all! Ah November! Degree work completed. Inspection complete. Visitations complete. Four Square, Super Bowl Party, Strawberry Festival, Saint Johns Sunday Procession, 300th Anniversary Table Lodge, Saint Andrews May Open House Breakfast, Veteran s Awards, The Outdoor Degree, The Ball Game, The visit to Saint Andrews By the Sea... Scholarships given, Charities supported, Community Builders Awarded and even a Major General John Sullivan Award in the mix for good measure. Did I mention Grand Lodge Communications?, Lodge of Instruction, Statewide Open House (which was a great success by the way we had about two dozen visitors throughout the day). Well We are in the home stretch now! Thursday, November 30th we will gather together for our Annual Meeting. Why on a Thursday? Why November 30th? Because it is Saint Andrew s Day, of course! Here s a few bits of info about Saint Andrew from Scotland.org St Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland St Andrew is celebrated on 30 November St Andrew's Day is a day to celebrate Scottish culture, food and dance St Andrew's flag is the flag of Scotland The flag is in the form of a white X on a blue background and is commonly known as The Saltire St Andrew's Societies celebrate Scottish culture around the world St Andrew's Day is a bank holiday in Scotland but entitlement to leave depends on the employer St Andrew is also the patron saint of Romania, Greece and Russia Scotland is one of the few countries to have one of Christs disciples as their patron saint St Andrew was one of the Twelve Apostles (disciples of Jesus) and brother of St Peter St Andrew is believed to have died on a diagonally transversed cross which the Romans sometimes used for executions and which, therefore, came to be called St Andrews Cross St Andrew's Day is connected with Advent, which begins on the first Sunday after November 26 St Andrew's Day marks the beginning of Scotland's winter festivals..aaaaaaand, to that list I will add our Annual Communication! On this Blessed day, we will wrap up any outstanding business for the year 2017, honor our passed brethren, and vote for 2018 s line of Officers. By the end of this evening, my year at the helm as Master and all 2017 business will come to rest. But rest NOT for very long! Installation of Officers will be just 2 days away! Saturday December 2nd, Saint Andrews 2018 will rise for another great year and I am very much looking forward to it! Please come and join the celebration! In Lumine Tuo Joe Rella, WM
3 PAGE 3 TRESTLE BOARD NOVEMBER 2017 From the west Happy November Brother s! Wow October sure was a busy month in the 1st District. St. Andrew s was again represented well at all of the Visitations this year by your Officers and Brethren as well. The programs were informative and a good time was had by all. We had a great turnout at the statewide open house. It was my first time giving tours so Worshipful Rella gave me a crash course. We met a great couple visiting the area from Houston, Texas who saw our sign and stopped in. They were very impressed with the Lodge and mansion and I think we asked them just about as many questions about Masonry in Texas. November shapes up to busy for us as well. Please join us at the stated as we discuss the upcoming amendments at Grand Lodge on the 18th. Don t forget get about our Annual Meeting on November 30th. I look forward to seeing you in Lodge. Dan Perry, SW Saturday, December 2nd 2:00 pm Installation of Officers 2018
4 NOVEMBER 2017 TRESTLE BOARD More Light PAGE 4 Masonic Emblems and Symbols Masonic imagery draws from a wide variety of sources, including the tools of medieval trade guilds, ancient and Gnostic lore and the works of legendary builders of the past. The Masonic poster published in New York City in 1908, incorporates many of the most famous symbols of Freemasonry. (1) The Eye: Commonly called the All-Seeing Eye or the Eye of Providence, this ancient image of omniscient knowledge is a reference to the Supreme Being whose existence most Masons must acknowledge. Placed atop a pyramid, the eye appears on the Great Seal of the U.S. on the reverse side of the dollar bill. The origins of the symbol have been traced to ancient Egypt. (2) Letter G: The capital letter, often placed within a compass and square in Masonic emblems, refers to God the Architect, and also to geometry. (3) The Temple: Masons look to the builders of Solomon s two Temples in Jerusalem as the pioneers of their craft or knowledge. (4) The Handshake: The Mason s famed secret greeting originated in the need to recognize fellow initiates in the trade secrets of medieval building. (5) Initiation: This scene depicts the lectern, sacred book, square and compasses that are all part of the initiation ritual of Masonic lodges. (6) The Pillars: The two tall, slender obelisks which can be crowned with globes, pyramids or orbs of light refer to the pillars of Solomon s Temple. The obelisk was a favored monumental form of ancient Egypt. (7) The Beehive: This emblem of industry and cooperation reminds Masons that they should never be idle, for their efforts can be of great benefit to their fellow man. (8) The Vignettes: The scenes surrounding the central panel show a variety of images significant to Masonry. On the Left side we see Hiram Abiff imparting knowledge at the top, Noah s Ark, and the lambskin apron worn by all Masons. At the bottom center, two Masons exchange a secret handshake of fraternity. At bottom right are the tools of the craft; a compass, a square and other devices. Scenes on the right side include images of Justice, of the symbolic death undergone by Master Masons, and of the five noble orders of architecture, represented by five ascending pillars. In The Craft, Wor. Mark I. Goodman, Historian
