1 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Ill. Wayne I. Smith, 33 Personal Representative of the S.G.I G. (360) Valley of Everett From the Personal Representative Ill Bro. Wayne Smith, 33 We have just completed our Installation of Officers for 2010 and it went very well. I owe a debt of gratitude to Ill. Allen Lowe, 33, Ill. Earl Greathouse, 33 and Ill. Walt Moody, 33 for their assistance in getting everything set up and ready. Kudos to Brother Hernan Divinagracia, 32 KCCH, his Lady Norma and their assistants for the great dinner, Brother Wayne Betts, 32 KCCH for the cake, all of you who assisted in serving and to all of you who stayed and cleaned up after the installation and dessert. This is one of the times that the phrase many hands make light work is very appropriate. I was particularly pleased to see so many of our new officers present to be installed and how many of you and your families were present to support them. All of our elected officers were present as were nearly all of our appointed officers. The few appointed officers that were not present are installed in absentia. I know that there were several competing events the same night that required some of you to miss our installation, but Brethren; you truly missed an impressive ceremony as we move ahead in Everett Scottish Rite for the year In Scottish Rite Masonry, as well as all of Masonry and every other service, fraternal, or community organization it is the support and participation that each of you give to our new leaders that make their terms successful. Please re-dedicate yourself to our Scottish Rite Valley and to Masonry in general and participate in the programs and degrees that we confer. As I peruse our Grand Master s itinerary, I find it particularly noteworthy that the month of February is dedicated to Job's Daughters as the Grand Lodge appendant body of the month, April is dedicated to DeMolay, and May is dedicated to Rainwww.everettscottishrite.org Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 Secretary PO Box 1112 Everett, WA (888) Toll Free Orient of Washington Volume 19 FEBRUARY 2010 Issue 02 THE RITE BULLETIN bow for Girls. Everett Valley Scottish Rite just held our Annual Youth Night on 15 January at which we honored our youth groups and I am truly sorry that I missed it as I was in Mobile, Alabama for a National Sojourner meeting. I submit that honoring our youth once a year is not adequate and we need to support them and their endeavors on a regular basis. When was the last time that you visited one of their meetings, volunteered to drive, willing donated funds to support their Chapters, Assemblies and Bethel s or supported their fund raising events such as dinners, raffles, breakfasts, etc? I know that our Valley pays them to serve at our catered dinners, we put advertisements in their Annual Communication programs, and on Youth Night we present every Assembly, Bethel, Chapter that attends with an appreciation check. I know that they truly need the financial support that we offer but even more they need the support you give by participating and attending their meetings and events. So many times you have heard one of us say something to the effect that They are our future. It is very apparent with DeMolay as we have so many Brothers in Masonry and Scottish Rite Masonry who have been enticed into our labors because they were DeMolay s. With Job s Daughters and Rainbow for Girls it may not be so apparent to some. I submit that if we support them and their endeavors we have assisted in making them better persons and citizens and most of these young ladies will never forget their Masonic experience and they will encourage their boyfriends and future husbands to look at Masonry as a way for them also to become better citizens and family leaders. Do not let this opportunity to improve our youth, our families, our community, our state and our nation slip by. They need us now. We have several superb events coming up in Everett Valley in the next few weeks. First is our Annual Sweethearts Dinner on Friday, 12 February. There will be a Punch Bowl Social at 6:30 with dinner at 7:00 Reservations Are Required. Degree conferral for the 21 st degree on the 19 th of

2 From The Secretary Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 The year-end holidays have come and gone and I sincerely hope that you all had a Merry Christmas and are well on your way to a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Today is January 6, 2010 and I have been reconciling some 2009 annual reports and some interesting items are coming to light. Dues..It appears that we will be dropping only five members for NPD for That is a significant decrease from recent years when we dropped as many as 15. You brothers are all to be congratulated for making membership in Scottish Rite a priority. As for the current dues year the Valley has 16 members who have not paid their 2009 dues and 61 who still owe for their 2010 dues. Brothers, please check your dues card and if it says 2009 please send me your check. Dinner Reservations became critical at the Christmas Party and I actually had to turn some members away because the dining room was full and there was no more seating available. So, the bottom line is to please make your dinner reservations early to assure yourself and your guests a place at the dinner table. February 12 is our Sweetheart Dinner; March 19 is the Ceremony of Remembrance; April 9 is the reception for our Grand Master, M W Gale H. Kenny; and the Cap and Ring Ceremony and Banquet will be on May 26. Each of these events requires dinner reservations. I can take reservations for these dinners at any time from now until the Wednesday before the event. On Wednesday, prior to the event, I must to give the caterer the head count so he can purchase his supplies and also to those hard working brothers who set up the dining room for the event. From the Personal Representative (Continued from page 1) February, a great program on the 26 th of February, conferral of the 25 th Degree on the 12 th of March and on the 19 th of March our Annual Ceremony of Remembrance, again with a Punch Bowl Social at 6:30 with dinner at 7:00 Reservations Are Required. Please join me and come out and support our Valley and our new leadership. In Memoriam Members of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Everett are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brother Edwin F. 3 Membership Development - Lead By Example By Terry Grove 32 Wise Master - Rose Croix Brethren - as we embark on the new decade and begin our 101st year as Scottish Rite Valley of Everett - we have many to thank, who preceded us and got us where we are today. The leadership demonstrated by our prior Past Most Worshipful Grand Masters and existing Personal Representative and current Illustrious brothers will be difficult, but not impossible, to match their leadership skills. Too often we take them for granted. How many Valleys have the opportunity to learn from three Past Grand Masters (Μ W Chuck McQuery; M W Carl Smith; M W Wayne Smith) and the present Deputy Grand Master, R W Santy Lascano. M Look to your laurels and observe the number of red and white hats within our Valley. We must take the opportunity to learn from them and better ourselves by gleaning whatever knowledge they impart to us. We must actively attend or participate in the many opportunities provided to us within the Valley. There are many who have taken officer positions within the four governing bodies. As we prepare ourselves to deal with the future demands on our fraternity - the question is: Will we be properly skilled to continue the legacy? If we are to learn by "mouth to ear" - how are we to acquire the skills or knowledge, if we do not attend or support the efforts of the Valley? There are many excuses one can give: traffic; family commitments; church obligations; job requirements, Masonic lodge; Shrine or other worthwhile fraternal organizations. There are and will be significant changes in the future, which will be most beneficial to the brethren of the Valley. We have en- deavored to involve as many brothers as possible to share in the experience of family, friendship, fraternalism, fellowship and fun. Unfortunately - there are many who for whatever personal reason they may have - desire not to participate in the Valley of Everett functions. What is it going to take to get some of you off the fence? We all joined Masonry to join our fellowship of brothers in charitable acts for those in need. If we are to continue to grow, we need your input and participation. We are open to your suggestions. However - if you do not speak up, how are we to know your desires or ideas? After all - we learn by example. Therefore, it's up to us to lead by example We look forward to seeing and hearing from you at future meetings. THE LODGE WHERE I BELONG ARTHUR R. HERRMAN Though my Lodge may lack the splendor Of a temple or a shrine, Or possess the gaudy fixtures That are classed as superfine- Yet the fellowship it offers Is in price beyond compare And I wouldn't trade it ever For life's treasures-rich or rare! The hand-clasp firm, the word of cheer, Oh, such meanings they impart: The mystic ties of brotherhood That links us, heart to heart! You'd really have to travel far, For the friendships quite so strong As those one always finds right here In the lodge where I belong. When all my earthly travels end, And at last I'm borne to rest Where mortal hands no longer toil And I cease life's endless quest Why there's nothing I'd like better- Should I join the heavenly throng- Than to meet with all the brothers Of the Lodge where I belong! Rose Croix Funeral Service This service is very beautiful and available to all members of the Scottish Rite; however, Members must make their desires known to their families and the Valley. Should you desire a Rose Croix Funeral Service, when the time comes, please let your families know now. Ensure that they have the phone number of our Valley Secretary, Charrison Lochaby when that time does comes. Charrison can be reached at , toll free.

4 For the last couple of years the Valley of Everett has been awarding a $5, scholarship to a graduating high school senior who was enrolling in a 4-year Public college or university in the following school year. The Executive Council recommended that the eligibility be extended to include students enrolling in Community Colleges or Vocational-Technical Colleges. Some of the local high school counselors had further recommended that the $5,000 award be split-up so as to include more students. Consequently, the Public Schools Committee put forth the following resolution to change the eligibility and award as stated below. Valley of Everett Scholarship Resolution Whereas the Scholarship Application listed the following eligibility requirement: Scholarship Eligibility & required documentation: 1. Must be a high school senior planning to attend a Public, 4-Year College of Instruction. 2. A copy of current high school transcript must accompany the application. 3. We would be most happy to have you accompany us to Everett, Mariner, Snohomish, Marysville-Pilchuck, and Arlington High Schools and make the presentation.

5 Could you Pass the Test? By Anthony C Schwab, 33 How many times have you heard someone say, It is a wonder that he ever became a mason. or How does he stay a mason? or Why did he ever become a mason? His actions now (as we see them) should have prevented him from being a mason or staying a mason. How did he become a mason by the way he acts now? The intent of this paper is to show how lucky we are that we are not judged every four years on our actions to the members of the Craft. This does not imply the need to experiment with a change in our system as it is today. On the contrary, it requires stimulating those members we already have to think about our actions. The sooner we start acting the way we should the better our Craft will be. Perfection but existing only in the imagination... Form a mental image of what it would be like if each Mason had to pass a test every four years to remain in the Craft like everyone has to do to keep a driver license. What would we do differently from what we are doing now or would we change at all? Would we only change when we were close to losing our right to remain in the Craft? Would we slow down in life only because we saw a person that could make a difference? Remember, during those four years you could lose all rights by failing to perform the basic Masonic ideals. We apply for drivers license or memberships in a Masonic Lodge by filling out the paperwork with the understanding that everything on the form is, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. At the DMV you wait for your name to be called to see if your paper work was done correctly, your tests are done by answering a lot of questions and hope you pass with at least the minimum grade. When you pass the driver s test you are ready to show how good you are at driving. In the Masonic Lodge you will show your proficiency after each degree like the driving test after the written part. We accept members into the Craft with some minimum requirements like, the way they act to others, their knowledge about the Craft and maybe little about their background. Should the requirements for membership be set higher in hopes of fewer problems? What would happen if the driver s license could be acquired if we dropped the requirements to a lower standard and knowledge about driving? We would have people driving that did not know their right from their left or even how to drive in some cases. In some states driving tickets have a point value that when added together can cause you to lose your license; imagine for a minute that all our actions were given points, would we treat our Brothers any different? Usually our actions change when we know something bad is going to happen. We will no longer run red lights, park in unauthorized parking stalls, go over the posted speed limit, talk on a cell phones while driving or having too much to drink. How many times have you said behind a brother s back what a jerk he is? How many times have you not admitted to an error but pointed out someone else s errors? How many times have you failed to address the Master of the Lodge with his proper title and respect? What would happen if the violation of those three items could cause you to be reevaluated as Mason, knowing that one black ball would oust you. My aim is to get people to remember the Oaths that they take within the Craft and nothing more. If what I wrote made you feel upset (which wasn t the reason I wrote this) I am sorry. However, I may have hit a home run on some matters. I only wanted you to think about your actions to your fellow creatures and the Craft. 6 House of the Temple Washington, D.C. December 29, 2009 Dear Master of the Royal Secret, Two hundred years ago today, our Illustrious Brother Albert Pike, 33, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an explorer, a teacher, a lawyer, a general, and a Freemason. His accomplishments in any of these areas would make him worthy of respect, but it is as a Freemason that we in the Southern Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite most remember him. In 1853 Ill. Albert G. Mackey, 33, Grand Secretary General, conferred the 4 through 32 on Bro. Pike. Only two years later in 1855 the Supreme Council appointed him to serve on a committee to revise our rituals. His advancement in the Scottish Rite was nothing short of amazing: in 1857 he was coroneted an Inspector General Honorary; in 1858 he became an active member of the Supreme Council; and in 1859 he was elected Sovereign Grand Commander. While Bro. Pike is best known for revising our rituals and writing "Morals and Dogma," we cannot forget that the Southern Jurisdiction operates today under his administrative reorganization of the Supreme Council. Ill. Pike's sublime command of language and his intricate layers of symbolism transformed Scottish Rite ritual in a way no one else has ever accomplished. Our Reverend Brother Joseph Fort Newton may have said it best: "Albert Pike found Freemasonry in a log cabin and left it in a Temple." However, when we think of our former Grand Commander and his many accomplishments, I believe we should consider his own words: What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. I ask that you take a moment today to pause and consider what Ill. Albert Pike, 33, did for others and for the world. As his heirs, we continue to fulfill his legacy. Sincerely and Fraternally Ronald A. Seale, 33º Sovereign Grand Commander For more information about Albert Pike, view our article HERE. 7 Tidbits on the Lodge of Perfection By Philip Leung, Jr., Venerable Master The Ancient & Accepted Scottish Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is commonly known as Scottish Rite for short. The Scottish Rite is one of the two branches of Freemasonry (the other branch is being the York Rite) in which a Master Mason may continue his education after he has completed the three degrees in the Symbolic or Blue Lodge Masonry, which builds upon the ethical teachings and philosophy offered in the Blue Lodge through dramatic presentation of the individual degrees. In the Southern Jurisdiction, each Valley has up to four Scottish Rite Bodies, and each body confers a set of degrees, for a total of 29 degrees. The four bodies are: Lodge of Perfection (4 through 14 ) Chapter of Rose Croix (15 through 18 ) Council of Kadosh (19 through 30 ) Consistory (31 through 32 ) A Master Mason must physically be present in the 4 th, 14 th, 18 th, 30 th and 32 nd degree conferral (called compulsory degrees), before he can become a 32 Scottish Rite Mason. In this article, we are only going to dwell on the Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection. The degrees of the Lodge of Perfection teaches TRUTH, IN- DUSTRY, HONESTY, BENEVO- LENCE, JUSTICE, TOLERATION, PATRIOTISM and LOVE OF COUN- TRY. It is also known as the Ineffable Degrees, having their inception in the Old Testament, because their principal purpose is the investigation and contemplation of the ineffable (unspeakable) name of Deity. Below is a brief statement of the moral teachings found within each degree: 4 - Secret Master: Duty, reflection and study are the gateway to opportunity, such as one honors those relationships to God, family, country and Masonry. 5 - Perfect Master: The degree teaches Masonic honor; that honesty and trustworthiness is the cornerstone of the foundation of such. This virtue should be in all of our undertakings with mankind. 6 - Intimate Secretary: In this degree we are taught to expand our knowledge of duty, charity and toleration. We are instructed to reshape ourselves, our thinking into charity, self-control and success, i.e. to be a peacemaker. 7 - Provost & Judge: We learn that impartial justice protects person, property, happiness and reputation. We are instructed to judge with patience and impartially. 8 - Intendant of the Building: We should strive for perfection by using the great principles of God s inherent love, charity, morality and kindness. 9 -Elu of the Nine (Elected Knight of the Nine): Truth, candor and generosity; the foundation of Scottish Rite masonry is most reflected in this degree Elu of the Fifteen (Illustrious Elect of the Fifteen): This degree teaches us to be tolerant and respect the opinion of others. All should share freedom of political and spiritual ideologies Elu of the Twelve (Sublime Knight of the Twelve): This degree teaches sympathy. We should be compassionate to our brother Masons and to all mankind as well Master Architect: This degree teaches faith in morality and virtue and in God. Life is what each man makes of it; the optimist turns a trial into a blessing Royal Arch of Solomon (Knight of the Nine Arch): Liberty, in our minds and in our hearts, motivated by duty and honor are the lessons of this degree Perfect Elu (Grand Elect, Perfect and Sublime Mason): This degree teaches us to reflect and scrutinize oneself. We should strive to be true to our God and ourselves. Contents in this article are culled from various sources readily available in the Internet.
