Taps, the hauntingly beautiful Bugle call, which signals the end of day as well as the end of life for American Service men, was composed by our Masonic Brother General Daniel Butterfield of Civil War fame. It has become one of, if not the most recognized musical composition known world wide. He was a member of Metropolitan Lodge # 273, New York City, New York. Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them." Bro. Franklin Roosevelt

2 Sean began coming to the Rite Care clinic when he was three and a half years old, in June At that time, he had motor speech problems, which significantly affected his speech and language development. His words were not clear, because it was difficult for him to form sounds and combine them into words. "Phone" sounded like "oh," "sisters" was reduced to "ers," and "water" became "wawa." Despite his speech difficulties, Sean continued to communicate and talk with everyone. He was a bright interactive boy who was just hard to understand. After a year of intensive speech therapy, Sean's speech skills have improved tremendously. He is having an easier time sequencing sounds into words and words into sentences, and his speech is much Sean s Journey clearer. Sean loves to talk about what he did over the weekend: "We went to the baseball game, then we got some cotton candy. In a bucket. And my dad wanted me carry my cotton candy. Then my dad um was holding my hand. Then my dad helped me carry my bucket." Although he still has trouble with certain sounds like /l/ in "light" and /r/ in "race," Sean sounds like a regular four-and-a-half year old boy. He has come a long way since last June. Sean will graduate from the Rite Care program at the end of August Federated Giving to Support Rite Care Our dollars are important to continue the Scottish Rite sponsored speech clinics and program. During the fall of each year, many of us have a chance to designate money to our Rite Care /SRCCLD programs in a variety of drives. The local United Way campaign will often allow us to check off or write in the agency of our choice and they send the money to the Rite Care office. The State Employee Combined Drive and the Combined Federal Campaign operate the same way with a donor choice option. If you have a chance, please consider pledging or giving to benefit Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders, dba Rite Care. For information, call (206) and (509) (or visit our web site at Thank you KNIGHTS OF SAINT ANDREW TO BE CONSECRATED September 16 th, 2005 will mark the beginning of new facet of Scottish Rite in the Valley of Everett. 3 The Valley of Everett Has New Secretary A THANK YOU Brothers of Everett Valley, I have submitted to Ill William Miller my resignation as the Secretary of Everett Valley. This resignation was affective on September 2, My term as your Secretary has been a challenging and learning experience. I appreciate the guidance and assistance that many of you have given to me in my years as your Secretary. It has been rewarding and challenging. I hope you will extend to your new Secretary the same support you had given me. Many thanks for your kindness and support. Fraternally, Harry Sherman, 32º KCCH The Prince Hall web site in New York lists Judge Joe Brown of television fame as a Prince Hall Mason. Order in the Court! From the New Secretary Brother Harry has been going over the duties and responsibilities with me and to say that everything is in a sort of a blur would be an understatement. I m sure that many of us do not understand or appreciate all that Bro. Harry has done on behalf of our Valley. It is my sincere hope that I can adequately fill his shoes and contribute my small part to the continued success of our Valley. As time goes on, and our Valley continues to grow, communication with our members will become a bigger part of the Valley s success. Many of us have and I plan to use it as much as possible. I have some of the member s e- mail addresses but I m confident that I do not have all of them. So I m asking you to provide me with your current USPS mailing address as well as your September Degree Work address. That way I can update my addresses and I can then verify that the Valley has your current snail mail address. You may send this information to me at: Charrison Lochaby. P.O. Box 193, Langley WA or send it to me by at clochaby@whidbey.com. Thank you in advance for sending me this information. Each month the Valley sends the Rite Bulletin to our members generally by US Mail. Would you like to receive yours by ? This can be done at the push of a button and I know that Ken Thompson, the Rite Bulletin editor would be glad to add your name to his mailing list. Send your address to Ken at knthom@gte.net and tell him that you would like to receive your Rite Bulletin via . Charrison Lochaby, September begins another year of exciting Scottish Rite activities for the Valley of Everett. One of the most important activities we have scheduled for the coming year is the conferral of the Degrees of Scottish Rite Masonry on a new class of candidates. The dramas for the Degrees introduce to the new candidates and remind all of the other members of the philosophy and moral lessons of our institution. Whether one is seeing the Degree for the first time or the twentieth time the Degrees do provide us with MORE LIGHT IN MASONRY. Our first Degree presentations are scheduled for September 23 when the 4 th and 6 th Degrees will be presented. Th The 4 th Degree under the direction of Degree Master Robert Dinwiddie, 32º, KSA is the first Degree of Scottish Rite Masonry. The Degree teaches secrecy, obedience, and fidelity. Above all, obedience to the law, the law that is an expression of the will and judgment of the people and for the benefit of the whole people. The 6 th Degree, directed by Degree Master Eugene McFarlane, 32º, KCCH will be presented immediately following the 4 th Degree. This degree, is well staged and very well acted, teaches we should always be slow in judgment and quick to act as peacemakers. On September 30 the 9 th and 10 th Degrees will be presented in a drama combining the two Degrees. These Degrees will be presented by the Honor men (KCCH and 33º) of the Valley. This will be the first time these Degrees have been presented for several years. Everyone is encouraged to attend to see and hear once again of the destructive influence of ignorance and value of religious toleration, intellectual toleration, and social toleration. Bob Larson, 33º, Director of Works

4 TAKE MY HAND, BROTHER, BE NOT AFRAID, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. U. S. Interstate inbound. Pushing my 18-wheeler at 65 MPH (then the legal speed) about fifteen miles from Los Angeles, I was all smiles. After six long months I was returning home from a distant location in Mobile, Alabama. The thought of being home with my wife and two sons had me tingling with joy. Then I saw him. He was old and looked half scared to death. He was standing alongside his automobile giving the "Grand Hailing Sign" over and over. Son of a gun, I was past him before I could pull over safely. I scanned my rear view mirrors hoping desperately to see someone come to the old man's assistance. Nothing. I felt myself wondering where all the members of the Craft were today. I glanced back once more. He was still valiantly and hopelessly seeking help. I sought out the next crossover and headed back. As I passed him I blew my air horn and waved an assuring hand. The old man seemed to collapse against the car. After making my turnaround I pulled up behind the stopped car and turned on my flashers. I didn't really know what to expect - someone dead or gravely ill maybe. The old man fell into my arms sobbing. Arm in arm we walked back to his car. Other than luggage, it was empty. The long and short of it was simple. He had lost his wife several months ago and his daughter had persuaded him to come to Long Beach to share their home. But you must picture this. In his seventy five plus years he had resided in a very small Kansas town and had never been four hundred miles from home. Now lost, scared out of his wits, on an eight lane freeway with cars passing on all sides, he was near hysteria. As we stood there face to face I couldn't keep from laughing. His white linen shirt revealed a roll of money above his sleeve garter, where his bicep should have been. "What's this, Pops?" I said as I touched the spot where the money was. "You a travelin' man ain'tcha?" His face searched mine. "Mount Olive #506, right here in Los Angeles, Hiram." Our hands met. His eyes twinkled with relief as he spurted out his Lodge back in Kansas. He dug out the roll of bills. "Here, Hiram, take it - please. Hold it for me 'til I get to Sister's so's I won't lose it." By Robert F. "Duke" Robbins I gripped him squarely by the shoulders. "Look, Pop, I want you to..." That's all he let me get out, when "Oh, please, Hiram, Oh Dear God... I can't drive on that thing," his thumb indicating the freeway. "Oh! Please don't leave me here." "OK, OK, brother." I looked at the "No Riders" sign on my truck and shrugged my shoulders. Stuffing the old guy in my cab-over was no easy chore, but by the time I got up behind the wheel he was grinning like a school boy. The bottom line was - getting off the freeway, calling his daughter, and waiting for their arrival. In the interim, my new found brother and I found a small cafe and as we sipped our coffee the story trickled out. He had owned a two-chair barber shop. Raised eight children. A boy had been killed at Iwo Jima. A daughter and her boy friend were coming home from a football game and were killed at a grade crossing by a train. The voice trailed off. We sat silently, and the old man stared into his coffee as if seeking an answer. Suddenly his family arrived. After the "Hellos," after I gave "Sister" the money, after we retrieve the car, as if as an afterthought, the old man straightens up, "I was Master of my Lodge, son, did I tell you that?" With that he turned and got into Sister's car. I climbed into my rig and forty-five minutes later was in the yard at Warner Brothers Studio. I took my luggage over to my car where the hugging and kissing makes homecoming so sweet. "You're almost two hours late, Honey," my wife said, "What happened?" "Had to help my brother get squared away." From the back seat came a squeal of glee from my oldest. 'You're a trip, Dad, always joking. You know you were an only kid. He's putting you on, Mom, he ain't got no brother." They couldn't see my smile in the dark. RAH: Brother Robbins sent this to me and I think it is a wonderful change of pace item for our mailings. And to quote his accompanying letter: "This is a true story - I wrote it just as it happened. I had put it away and was cleaning out an old cabinet - and there it was. "I spent 40 years in the motion picture industry in the transportation department. I saw Masonry

5 surface many times during this period." [About 20 years ago we published this article which means that it should be issued once more as it is a wonderful story. At that time it was republished so many times in other Masonic publications that I told Duke it must have reached over a million readers. We found that Duke was just as nice a guy as this story portrays. Duke passed away in 1992.] Reprinted by permission, Southern California Research Lodge F&AM

In the second stage you learn the right questions. In the third and final stage you learn which questions are worth asking. William G. Although there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite serve to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge. A Mason who chooses to further his Masonic experience by becoming a 32 Scottish Rite Mason will be expanding upon the fundamental principles of Freemasonry. The moral and ethical lessons will allow him to be constantly reminded of his duty to God, family, country, and fellow man. Council of Kadosh By Charrison Lochaby, 32º September 30, 2005 the Council of Kadosh will open for the purpose of conferring the 9 th & 10 th Degree by the Honor Men. Dinner, under the arrangements of Bro. Pat Marlatt, 32 0 KCCH, will be served at 6:30 and the Council will open at 7:30. When the degree is concluded we will then close the Council. The 9 th and 10 th degrees are combined into one presentation and this will be the first time that this degree has been conferred in our Valley. Let s have a good turn out for this degree. EVERETT MASONIC CENTER REMODEL Phase one of the Everett Masonic Center remodel project is underway. The first step is to make the kitchen and small dining room in Suite 220 operational. This should be completed by mid-september. The second step of phase one will be the enlargement of the dining room. Functional design is underway with contractor specifications to be completed by September 30. The present time line calls for completion by December 1. During the time of construction there will be some problems with the dining room being closed. We hope these can be resolved by using Suite 220 for small gatherings and the Lodge room in 220 for larger gatherings. EMC CALENDAR The Calendar for the Masonic Center is now on-line.
