5 TODAY S READINGS First Reading This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you (Exodus 24:3-8). PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Registration forms can be downloaded from the church website or are available at the church office. Also, please notify us when moving out of the parish or when have a change of address. BAPTISM: Parents should be registered in the parish unless they have made other arrangements with the Pastoral Team. Pre-baptismal class is required for both parents and godparents. To schedule a baptism, arrangements must be made by the parents of the child to be baptized, by calling Terry in the Parish Office at Registration for the Baptismal Preparation Class may also be made by calling Terry. MARRIAGE: Make arrangements by contacting the parish office at Must be registered, active, and contributing members six months prior to the wedding. The couple should meet with the priest or deacon prior to setting a wedding date or making plans for the reception. CONFESSIONS: Saturday immediately following the 5:30pm Mass (except the week before and after a Communal Penance Service or if a wedding or parish function is scheduled.) Also available by appointment. FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY is held the 4th Sunday of each month after weekend Masses. Refreshments are served after these Masses. This is also a great way to socialize with your fellow parishioners.

7 Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark Throughout the Galilean ministry of Jesus the sea plays an important role. It is by the sea that so many things will happen before Jesus and his apostles set out for Judea. We need to understand that the Sea of Galilee is not really a sea. In fact, in more ancient literature it is called a lake, and it is sometimes referred to as Lake Jenezarith. Mark chooses to use the word sea because of what the sea meant to the Jewish people throughout their history. The sea was considered the primal abyss. In the Creation story in Genesis the waters of the deep, the watery chaos, exists before God begins to create. It is the abode of sea monsters, the dwelling place of the dark and the unknown. The sea is an object of fear and respect with the nether world at its depths. The story of Jonah is an excellent example of Jewish thinking about the sea. It is by the sea that Jesus selects his first followers: Simon, his brother Andrew, James and his brother John. Levi, who will be identified as Matthew in the list of apostles, will also be called by the sea. Jesus teaches by the sea or from a boat and draws crowds to listen, to see and to be cured. The storms and headwinds encountered by Jesus and his apostles represent the struggles of the early Church. Jesus sleeps during a storm, awakens and accuses the apostles of little faith before calming the sea. Jesus s walking on water reminds the Church to not put their trust in the things of nature (the physical world), but to put their trust in God, a theme we will encounter throughout Mark. It is also a vague reference to Jesus s divine nature; he has power over the sea, controlling even the nether world. The sea will also be crossed from the Jewish side to the Gentile side several times in Mark s Gospel to show that the Gospel is meant for everyone. The most important crossings of the sea are for the two miracles of the loaves and the fish, one being truly Jewish and the other Gentile. Scholars consider these two miraculous events as representative of the Eucharist. This will be more fully explored when we discuss those chapters. To better understand all the layers and subtleties of Mark s Gospel, we need to explore how he often sets the stage for a more important story by doing what scholars call sandwiching. We have already seen some examples of this by the movement from home to the sea and back, completing the teaching phases as Jesus moves from one place to the other. Jesus often separates the apostles from the crowds to explain his parables, sometimes causing awkward transitions in the middle of the stories. Fr.
