The Council looks forward to hearing from parishioners with ideas on making our parish even better! THE MASTER STORYTELLER In today s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus proclaims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disciples, as insignificant as they may have felt, would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God s kingdom cannot be predicted. General Information PARISH REGISTRATION: New parishioners are always welcome. You may register in the parish by calling the parish office. Registration forms can be downloaded from the church website or are available at the church office. Also, please notify us when moving out of the parish or when have a change of address. BAPTISM: Parents should be registered in the parish unless they have made other arrangements with the Pastoral Team. Pre-baptismal class is required for both parents and godparents. To schedule a baptism, arrangements must be made by the parents of the child to be baptized, by calling Terry in the Parish Office at Registration for the Baptismal Preparation Class may also be made by calling Terry. MARRIAGE: Make arrangements by contacting the parish office at Must be registered, active, and contributing members six months prior to the wedding. The couple should meet with the priest or deacon prior to setting a wedding date or making plans for the reception. CONFESSIONS: Saturday immediately following the 5:30pm Mass (except the week before and after a Communal Penance Service or if a wedding or parish function is scheduled.) Also available by appointment. FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY is held the 4th Sunday of each month after weekend Masses. Refreshments are served after these Masses. This is also a great way to socialize with your fellow parishioners.

6 Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark When it comes to the parables, we need to note that Mark states Jesus teaches in parables as opposed to telling parables, indicating a definite purpose for them. Unlike Matthew and Luke, however, Mark gives us very few examples of parables. Four parables are presented in Chapter 4, more than any other chapter. The first parable is about a sower sowing seed. Part of the seed falls on the road where birds eat it, part falls on a stony place with little soil and withers in the sun, part falls among thorns that choke it, and finally part falls on good soil where it produces fruit, shooting up and swelling, yielding thirty, sixty and one hundred fold. Jesus ends by saying Whoever has ears to hear, let him listen. When they are alone, those around him, along with the twelve, asked him about the parables. This indicates that true followers included more than the twelve; it is also a reference to the early church. Mark has Jesus tell his followers, To you the mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted; he states that those who are outside, basically those who refuse to be open and thus incapable of understanding the parables will remain outside: so that seeing, they see but not perceive, and hearing they hear but do not understand, lest they turn and be forgiven. Mark clearly presents forgiveness as the way to be open to God who will enable one to understand the Word, which is the teaching of Jesus. It is interesting to note that after teaching the parable of the sower, the crowd disappears; the next line states when he was alone. Mark indicates that not even Jesus s closest followers, which of course, included the twelve, really understood. There is a slight reprimand Do you not grasp this parable? And how will you understand all of the parables? He begins his explanation by stating the sower sows the word, so the parable becomes about the word rather than about seeds. He now parallels nature with human conditions. There are the ones on the pathway where the word is sown; as soon as they hear, however, the Devil comes at once and takes away the word sown in them. Those on rocky soil accept the word with joy but it does not take root, so it falters with trial or persecution (this of course is directed at the early Christian communities). Those on thorns hear the word, but allow anxieties, concerns for riches and other longings to make the word fruitless. The ones on good ground are the ones who hear the word and welcome it and bear fruit, thirtyfold, sixtyfold and a hundredfold. Next week, we ll take a look at the other three parables in Chapter 4.
