Your increased support will make it possible for us to rebuild the emergency reserves that have been depleted by the poor economy and increasing expenses. With your additional support we will be better able to meet the continually rising costs of a parish of our size (with seven buildings, a school that serves over 300 students in PreK through grade 8, and over 50 school and parish staff members). 3 THE PASTOR S COLUMN SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JANUARY 20, 2013 THIS AND THAT I decided to title this column THIS & THAT since I have a few things to write about that are not related except for the fact they all involve our parish. FIRST The Christmas Collection As you may have read on page two of this bulletin, our Christmas Collection came to $101,925. That certainly is good news indeed! In spite of a poor economy, our Christmas collection was higher than in years past. I would like to express my gratitude and that of our Finance Council to all those who generously shared their financial blessings this Christmas for the good of our parish. Your generosity demonstrates your care and concern for your parish, your spiritual home. It also shows your realization that when we give in the collection, we not only give to meet a need, we also give because we need to give. We need to show our thanks and gratitude to God, the source of all our blessings and the one who gave of himself that first Christmas. We do that by returning to God some of what God has given to us. We gratefully give to God s Church and to others in need. SECOND A Busy, but Wonderful Sunday If you saw the pictures on page four of this bulletin, you certainly would conclude that Sunday, January 13, was a very busy day at our parish. We had COFFEE TALK after our 7 am Sunday Mass. Following the Mass, parishioners came down to the gathering area in the lower church for some coffee, juice, bagels, and pastries. It gave folks a chance to meet some of their fellow Mass goers. We decided to use the lower church since it saved a trip to the Parish Life Center at an early hour of the morning. Then at 11:30 am, following our 10:30 am Mass, we had an informal farewell reception for Father Roy at the Parish Life Center. Many people came over to wish Father all the best in his new assignment at Saint Vincent Parish in Bayonne. A good number of folks at the reception had not yet seen all the improvements we have made at our Parish Life Center. They all agreed it is a beautiful building and an asset to our parish. At 12:30 pm, we celebrated the Baptism of two little boys at our 12:30 pm Sunday Mass. It was a fitting day to celebrate this sacrament since it was the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the final day of the Christmas Season. It was a wonderful liturgy. I am very proud of the great way we celebrate Baptisms at Sunday Mass. It 3 truly is a celebration that helps us all grow in our understanding of what it means to be baptized. At 1:30 pm, volunteers took down the Christmas decorations in Mary s Chapel in the lower church, and then cleaned and prepared the space for Mass on Monday. (The decorations in the upper church came down the following day.) I am grateful to our volunteers who showed such care for our worship spaces. Then at 3 pm, we had our Christmas Concert, An Afternoon of Christmas Joy. The church was nearly full for this wonderful afternoon of Christmas music that ranged from O Holy Night to Jingle Bell Rock. We even had a jazz version of We Three Kings. Monroe Quinn, our Music Director, did a superb job in putting the program together. As one of my friends from Jersey City told me after the concert, Father, you certainly have a lot of talent in your parish. That is absolutely true! THIRD Lent It seems strange to be writing about Lent since we only took down the Christmas decorations in church last Sunday. But Lent will soon be here. It begins February 13, just some three weeks away. This Lent we will once again be offering you the opportunity to participate in a small group for about one hour each week for the six weeks of Lent. These groups will meet at convenient times during the week so you can pick the best day and time that works for you. Each meeting will be based on the material found in OPEN OUR HEARTS, a Lenten reflection book coauthored by Sister Donna Ciangio and me and published by Ave Maria Press of Notre Dame University. This book was just released to correspond to the Gospel Readings for Lent Next week s bulletin will have more information about how you can participate in one of these small groups that will begin the week of February 10. Also the book OPEN OUR HEARTS will soon be available for purchase at a discounted price of $5. FOURTH Respect Life This Tuesday, January 22, is the 40th Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in our nation. That ruling has made the womb a dangerous place and it has led to the ongoing degradation of the value of human life. Since 1973 more than 55,000,000 human lives have been brought to an end by abortion in our nation. If we believe that life is a gift from God, which we most certainly do, abortion is truly an insult to our Creator and an evil act to say the least. This Tuesday, join us for Mass at 7 am and as we pray that God s gift of human life may be cherished by all people and not destroyed. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

Back then, the Church was concerned that people attending liturgies were going through the motions but missing out on the meaning. So the Council produced a very important document, The Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy, that called for changes that would increase the participation of people in the Church s liturgies. These changes have become integral to our present day celebration of the Mass. They include allowing for the use of modern languages in the liturgy; calling for a greater use of Scripture; the restoration of the homily and the prayer of the faithful at Mass; and permission for the laity to receive from the chalice at communion time. YOU CAN STILL MAKE A GIFT THROUGH AN IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER The IRA Charitable Rollover has been extended through 2012 and This extension allows individuals 70½ or older to move up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities such as your parish, Archbishop s Annual Appeal, the Archdiocese of Newark, or another archdiocesan institution without having to pay income taxes on the donated money. However, you will need to act fast to take advantage of the 2012 tax year. Qualified distributions made by February 1, 2013, may be counted retroactively for the 2012 tax year. Also, if you took a distribution from an IRA in December 2012, you may make a contribution to a qualified charity before February 1, 2013 and treat this as a direct transfer. January 13, the last day of the Christmas Season, was celebrated in a grand way at Saint Joseph with Coffee Talk after the 7 am Mass, Fr. Roy s Farewell at the 10:30 Mass and his Reception at the Parish Life Center, two Baptisms at the 12:30 pm Mass, and our hugely successful Afternoon of Christmas Joy Concert at 3 pm in the church. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint John 2:1-11. Sometimes our parents know more about us than we think. If we have a special talent, they will probably be the first to realize it and they sometimes will push us to participate in an event that we do not think we are ready for. This is exactly what happens in today s Gospel. Mary, Jesus and the disciples are invited to a wedding. Later in the afternoon, Mary realizes that there is not enough wine at the wedding. So Mary tells Jesus, There is no more wine. But Jesus says to his mother, How does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come. Jesus knew that eventually he would work miracles. But he thought that he was not ready. He felt the time was not right. However, he wanted to please Mary so he got up and told the waiters to bring him the jugs of water. Jesus trusted that God would help him if he had trouble. So he took the jugs of water and turned the water into wine. He told the waiters to take the wine to the head waiter who would taste the wine and give it to the guests. This was Jesus first miracle. By doing this miracle, he revealed his glory to the waiters, to the disciples, and to his mother. Mary had no doubt that Jesus could do what she had asked him to do. From that moment the disciples began to believe in him. We are like Jesus. Each one of us is called to do something special. We will not know what it is until we are older, but if we trust in God, he will tell us. Jesus took the jars filled with water and turned the water into wine. MISSION OF THE WEEK Talents come from God. We all have them. We all have different ones. Some of us are good at music, some of us are good at sports. Take time to thank God for the talents that you have. And ask God for the strength to develop your talents because with God s help anything is possible. NOTE: Our special Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place during our Mass each Sunday. The children are invited to the lower church before the Readings for their own special proclamation of God s Word and Homily. They return to the upper church for the Presentation of the Gifts. 6
