3 A GOOD-BYE MESSAGE FROM FR. RAUL My dear friends, I still clearly remember my first Sunday Mass here in St Joseph on June 25, six years ago. As a newly ordained priest I remember walking up the main isle towards the altar to say my first Mass in the parish. Being somewhat nervous I could feel the eyes of the congregation fall upon me. I thought to myself What must they be thinking about me? I felt even more intimidated as I noticed how even the junior servers were taller than me. When I finally arrived at the presidential chair I said. Hi! I am not a junior altar server; I am your new priest! When the congregation responded with a great laugh it really calmed me down and my nervousness went away. From that moment on I really enjoyed the Mass and felt very much accepted and welcomed at St Joseph Parish. SIX YEARS PASS QUICKLY I can t believe how six years went by so quickly. Looking back I think I know how this happened. After only seven months in the parish I inherited most of Fr. Peter Wehrle s responsibilities when he left. It was shortly after that the Lower Church was flooded and it obliged us to change our plans. I had the opportunity to live with several priests who served at St Joseph Parish, Frs. Reilly, Peter, Coda, Jim, Ed, Tony, Robert, Tom and now Fr, Roy. Each one of them encouraged me and inspired me in many ways to be a better priest. Also, I ve experienced the transition of pastors, music directors and some staff members and all the challenges that change entails. I witnessed more than twenty weddings, celebrated some 80 baptisms, said a countless number of Masses in the church and school, heard confessions and administered the anointing of the sick in houses, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. The list can go on. Our school and religious education program taught me a great deal about the education of children in the faith. The experience was so enriching and inspiring in all senses. Yes, St Joseph is a very exciting and interesting parish to be in. In a special way I was touched by the eagerness and love of its people. When help was needed it was enough to express it and parishioners responded generously. With parishioners and volunteers like that it was not difficult to be a priest at St Joseph. MY NEW ASSIGNMENT As I mentioned in my previous bulletin announcement being a diocesan and missionary priest of our Archdiocese of Newark, I was ordained with the willingness to serve wherever there was a need, be it 11 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JUNE 17, here in the diocese or anywhere else in the world. Since God has blessed the Archdiocese of Newark with an abundance of vocations, Archbishop Myers is able to help many dioceses which are in need of priests. In my case, I have been released to serve in the diocese of Winona, MN for a period of three years. This assignment can be extended or ended in mutual agreement by the bishops involved. Although I may be working in other dioceses my home will always be the Archdiocese of Newark. Last month I went to Minnesota to visit Bishop John Quinn of the diocese of Winona. He welcomed me very kindly and was very thankful that I accepted this assignment. He has appointed me parochial vicar of Queen of Angels parish in Austin MN. Also, he wants me to work with the Neocatechumenal communities of the diocese and thus promote the efforts of the new evangelization. I am very humbled and thankful to the Lord for having chosen me for this task. Whatever I can do to help I will try my best to be of service to the Church. It was a great encouragement to see how Bishop Quinn and the pastor of Queen of Angels are people who have a great love for the Church and have a genuine concern for the salvation of souls. This will be my new address: Queen of Angels Parish 1001 E. Oakland Ave Austin, MN (padreraulsilva@gmail.com) This is the second church that we are also covering: Our Lady of Loretto Church If you are in the area or passing through please stop by to say hello. I will be very happy to greet you. My new parish is only 45 minutes away from Rochester where the famous Mayo Clinic is located. I hope not to see you sick over there, but in case you are you can let me know and I will come to visit you. For those who like shopping the Mall of America is only two hours away. In Minnesota two hours is nothing, it is like 30 minutes for us. I do not advise you to visit me in the winter time at least not in my first year. I don t think I will be a thrilled to be outdoors this winter. Please keep me in your prayers so that I may always lean on God and be of service to His Church. Peace, Fr Raúl

4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION FOR 2012/2013 TERM Current Students All of our currently registered students will be receiving their registration letters and forms. First Grade Students In order to receive First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, a student must have attended first grade religion classes. Anyone who attends a non- Catholic School and is going into the 1 st grade in September of 2012 must register for Religious Education. New Students New Student Registrations are being accepted. To enroll in the Religious Education Program, your family must be registered parishioners of St. Joseph Parish and present a copy of the child s Baptism Certificate. For information contact the Religious Education Office (religioused@sjcnj.org) or ( ). Parish Registration All families enrolled in the Religious Education Program must be registered parishioners of St. Joseph Parish. If you are not registered with the parish, please call the Rectory ( ) to speak with one of the priests and register. Volunteers Needed to Staff the Religion Classes Volunteers are the heart of the Religious Education Program. Volunteers staff our classrooms and aid in overseeing the school buildings when class is in session. With close to 900 students in our program, you can only imagine the number of volunteers it takes to help make this program work. Without our volunteer staff we would not be able to offer our young people a quality program guiding them in the formation of our Catholic Faith. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys working with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider the stewardship of giving of your time and talents as a catechist. Remember, as you undertake this task, you are helping to give the Gift of Faith to the young people of our parish. If you would like further detailed information about volunteering, please contact the Religious Education Office at We invite you visit the new Religious Education Website for news, schedules, download forms and updates. (sjcreligioused.blogspot.com) ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ 4 ATTENTION ALL LITURGICAL MINISTERS AN EVENING OF REFLECTION THIS TUESDAY, JUNE 19, at 7:30 pm All parish liturgical ministers (readers/lectors, special ministers of Holy Communion, ushers/greeters, altar servers, choir members, cantors, instrumentalists) are encouraged to attend a special evening of reflection this Tuesday, June 19, at 7:30 pm in Saint Joseph Lower School Gym on Elm Street. It is our chance to minister to our ministers! PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL UPDATE The Parish Pastoral Council had their monthly meeting on Monday, May 21, The meeting began with icebreaker and prayer. We discussed the upcoming Mass schedule changes and plan to help parishioners adjust to this change as much as possible. We then discussed the recent Day of Service. The Day of Service was a large success for all those that planned it and participated in it as well as for all those that were served. We look forward to continuing with the Day of Service in the spring or fall of The PPC Forward in Faith Action Items were discussed. We all agreed that we would like to spend more time on this and will have an additional summer meeting on a Saturday in July. The Council is currently working on preparing a welcoming committee in order to help welcome new parishioners as well as to help our parish to be one that is welcoming. We reviewed Father Raul s Farewell Weekend and wish him well in his new assignment. Solicitation requests were reviewed. The Finance Council representative gave us an update. Our meeting ended in prayer. Comments can be sent to(pastoralcouncil@sjcnj.org) THE IMPORTANCE OF PARISH REGISTRATION As you can tell from the article to the left, being a registered parishioner is import for enrollment in the Religious Education Program and preparation for the sacraments. Not only is Parish registration important for our families with children, it is important for the parish and for individuals. Registration is simple, just contact the rectory ( ) and make an appointment to meet with one of our parish priests.

5 The fourteen days from Thursday, June 21, the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to a fortnight for freedom a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, reflection, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. All Catholics are being urged to support a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty. A PRAYER FOR THE PROTECTION OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY O God our Creator, Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. (We encourage you to pray this prayer daily that the religious liberty enjoyed by people of faith 11 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JUNE 17, A PROUD SJS GRADUATE When Hyewon Kim first came to Saint Joseph School (SJS) with her mother five years ago from Goon-po, Republic of Korea, she was in fourth grade and spoke very little English. When the eighth grade graduated, Wednesday, June 6, Hyewon was first in her class. Hyewon speaks warmly of her experience at SJS. She talks about how passionate the teachers are. She remembers the kindness of teacher Alice Rogers who helped her with English and made her feel less lonely in those early days. She talks about how much she learned from teacher (now vice-principal) Angela Gussoni who always encouraged her. Hyewon s interests are amazingly diverse. Her favorite subject is science. She would like to study genetics. She is fascinated by the cultural differences and battle strategies she learned about in world history. She is an incredibly gifted artist who has won many prizes since she first began drawing and painting at age six or seven. Her most recent award was First Place Overall in the Bergen Catholic Art Show. Hyewon plays tennis and has studied martial arts and horseback riding. She is happiest when her father is able to come to the U.S. to spend time with her and her mother. She is headed for Immaculate Heart Academy (IHA) and dreams of one day going to Harvard. Hyewon has said that she takes many special memories with her as she leaves Saint Joseph: seeing her first Broadway musical on the 8 th grade class trip, dancing the night away at the 8 th grade Dance at the Hackensack Country Club...and most especially, the warmth and passion of the teachers of Saint Joseph School. (Learn more about SJS at (sjsusa.org) TARGET NEWS YOUTH GROUP NIGHT Tuesday night, June 19, 7-9pm in the TARGET ROOM Lower Level of the Rectory Teens in high school are invited to our weekly Youth Group night. Each week, we gather and have time to hang out, play pool, and listen to music. We also take time to share our faith, pray for one another and prepare for Mass by listening to the readings for the upcoming Sunday. Each meeting allows us to grow closer as friends and followers of Jesus. We hope to see you there.

6 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Mark Chapter 4:26-34 In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us that about a very small mustard seed. When the mustard seed is planted it grows into a very large plant with very large branches. We are like the mustard seed. Think of how you have grown since you were a baby. God s church started out very small and continues to grow all the time because more and more people come to listen to God s word. As we grow closer to Jesus, God s kingdom grows too. A mustard seed grows into a large plant with large branches. MISSION OF THE WEEK I will try to bring a friend with me to the 9 am Mass next Sunday. Then I will bring my friend to the Liturgy of the Word with Children so together we can listen to the Word of God. IMPORTANT MESSAGE Next Sunday, June 24, will be the last Sunday for the Liturgy of the Word with Children. See you again in September. 6
