Beginning today Sunday, July 3, and continuing through September 4, there will only be ONLY ONE SUNDAY MASS at 10:30 am. Like so many of our parishioners, the 10:30 am Mass in the Lower Church will be taking a vacation. RECTORY OFFICE CLOSED Please note: The Rectory office will be closed on Monday, July 4. We hope you have a safe and happy July 4 th Weekend. 1 MONDAY IS JULY 4 TH, a day we all celebrate the independence of our nation. We invite you to join as we thank God for the freedom and liberty we enjoy as citizens of the United States of Americans by attending Mass. Monday, JULY 4, Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 am in the upper church. There are no other Masses on July 4. A PRAYER FOR OUR NATION Almighty and ever-living God, we humbly praise you for the nation in which you have allowed us to live. We cherish its wonder and its beauty. We are thankful for its fruitful lands, its bountiful waters, its great resources and its unlimited opportunities. We thank you for our founding fathers and mothers, and for their foresight, special wisdom, and steadfast courage in establishing freedom and a lasting document of fairness. Stir up within each of us the will to be good stewards of all the blessings of the land we love. Amen. Let us remember those who are ill, Thomas E. Starzl, Dolores Pinto, Maryanne Wichmann,Connie Vozza & Rev. Robert McBride. Let us pray for those who have died this past week. Let us remember those serving our country that they may be protected, that their efforts to secure peace and justice may be successful, and that they may return home unharmed. 2 ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Sunday Mass. It s amazing how much you learn about God by listening to children share their faith. I have been "pastored" by the members of the parish staff, namely, Father Raul, Heath Winborn, Colette Vail, Anthony Armando, Arlene Kennedy, Monroe Quinn, and now Fr. Roy. We have an honest, open, and cordial relationship that allows us to encourage and also challenge one another in our ministries. I have also felt "pastored" by parish members who have taken the time to stop by or to write to me in order to share their wisdom and advice and their observations about the parish, and about how I am doing as pastor. I have also been touched by the affirmation and good wishes that I have received from so many of you. Your encouragement helps me to keep going. I often feel it is through your words that God encourages me. I have been helped to be a better pastor by the members of the Pastoral Council, the Finance Council, the School Advisory Board, the Buildings & Grounds Committee, and also the Steering Committee working on our strategic plan Forward in Faith I have been amazed at the wisdom, good sense, and dedication shown by the people on these groups. They have pastored me to make better decisions than I could do on my own. Besides being a year of growth for me, and I hope for you, some people have told me that this past year has been one of adjustment and change. But that should not be surprising. Things change when a new principal is appointed; things change when a new mayor is elected, things change when a new person becomes our boss, and things change when a new pastor arrives on the scene. One pastor is not just like another, any more than one person is just like another. Some of the changes that have occurred have come about as a result of decisions that were put on hold in anticipation of the arrival of a new pastor. In making decisions, I always consult with other staff members and with the appropriate councils and committees. I believe the wisdom of the group is always better than the wisdom of one. I also believe that the Holy Spirit works through meetings and consultation. As I begin my second year as pastor, I am optimistic about the future of our church and school. I believe God has great plans for our parish. I hope and pray that you and I will work together so we can help our parish continue to grow and develop. Yes, things are changing in our parish that is because God is acting in our parish. When God acts, things change. God never leaves well enough alone. God is always working to make things better and to make us better too. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski THE PASTOR S COLUMN ONE YEAR AGO July 1, 2010 I began my service as pastor of Saint Joseph Parish. In the bulletin of the following Sunday, July 4, 2010, I wrote the following: Dear Members of Saint Joseph s Parish, I officially began my ministry here at St. Joseph s Parish this past Thursday, July 1. I am very happy that Archbishop Myers appointed me to serve as your pastor. As you may know, I had the privilege of serving as a parish priest here at St. Joseph s from 1981 to This is my second assignment as a pastor. From 1995 to 2009, I was pastor of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in Jersey City. Those 14 years taught me a great deal about myself and about the role a pastor plays in the life of his parish. One of things I learned was that as a pastor strives to help his parishioners grow closer to God, the people of the parish do the same thing for the pastor. The parishioners help a pastor to grow in his relationship with God and his understanding of priesthood. In a real sense, the people help to pastor the pastor. I know this was true for me in my previous parish and I am sure it will be true here at St. Joseph s. As I begin my service as your pastor, I look forward to growing in my relationship with God because of you and I look forward to being pastored by you. One year later, I can say that because of being with you, I have grown in my relationship with God. I have been touched by your prayerfulness at Mass, and that has helped me to pray and grow in my own faith. I have been impressed by your evident love of God and your love of neighbor, especially those who are hurting and in need. I have witnessed food drives, collections to help the homeless, and the good works of the Social Concerns Committee. I have watched ministers of Communion go forth to visit the sick and homebound, and seen acts of care and concern by parishioners whose charity and kindness remains largely unknown by others. I have been spiritually nourished by participating in the Men's and Women's Cornerstone Retreats and enjoyed being in the pews as others directed the retreats. I have had the joy of celebrating the liturgy with the children of our parish school and working with teachers on the School Liturgy Committee. I have enjoyed working with Father Raul and parish members in celebrating the Liturgy of the Word with Children during our 9 am 2
3 JULY 3, 2011 SUPREME COURT REJECTS CHALLENGE TO "UNDER GOD" IN PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Knights of Columbus waged successful defense on East and West Coast cases The United States Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance, thus ending a seven year battle involving two separate cases, one originating in California and the other in New Hampshire. The Knights of Columbus, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, played a key role in defending the Pledge as a "defendant intervenor" in both cases. "The Knights of Columbus is proud to have played a major role in successfully defending the constitutionality of the words 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance," Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. "We were instrumental in persuading Congress to add those words to the Pledge in 1954, and they express a fundamental belief that we have held as a nation since our founding, that we 'are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights.' The notion that this somehow violates the First Amendment has now been soundly rejected by both the First and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the Supreme Court has now allowed both decisions to stand. It is a victory for common sense." The Ninth Circuit upheld the constitutionality of the Pledge in March 2010 and the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal of the California case in March The First Circuit upheld the constitutionality of the Pledge in November 2010 and the Supreme Court denied certiorari in that case on June 13, ST. Volunteers staff our classrooms and aid in overseeing the school buildings when class is in session. With over 800 students in our program, you can only imagine the number of volunteers it takes to help make this program work. Without our volunteer staff we would not be able to offer our young people a quality program guiding them in the formation of our Catholic Faith. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys spending time with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider the stewardship of giving of your time and talents as a catechist. Remember, as you undertake this task, you are helping to give the Gift of Faith to the young people of our parish. If you would like further detailed information about volunteering, please contact the Religious Education Office at
5 GIVING THOUGHT Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. (Matthew 11:29) In those words from today s Gospel, Jesus tells his followers that they are to imitate his example. Jesus sacrificed for others. He was sensitive to the needs of people. He cared about the sick and the hurting. He shared what he had to help others. He was unafraid to speak up for the lowly and the oppressed. He attacked hypocrisy wherever he found it. He freely spoke of the things of God even to those who did not want to hear it. He made time for God, time for prayer, and time for those who sought his help. In other words, Jesus was a person for others and a person for God. We are to learn from his example. We are to people who care for others and who care for the Church that God has entrusted to us. VACATIONS 2011 Are you planning and packing for your vacation? School is closed, vacations are scheduled. Be sure to include God in your plans. Remember the expenses of the church also continue during the vacation months. Please continue to use your envelopes and if you are going away please put in your envelope the week before or the week after you return. Please be sure to mark your envelopes. Have a happy, safe and healthy summer! HOW TO REPORT ABUSE The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Visit our new school and parish websites. You will be impressed! 5
