3 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD, MARCH 24, 2013 PASTOR S COLUMN GREAT DAYS TO BE A CATHOLIC It s great to be a Catholic, especially these days! The election of Pope Francis has certainly made a positive impact on people, Catholics and non-catholics alike. There seems to be a new energy and enthusiasm in the Church. Pope Francis has begun to do what the successor of Saint Peter is called to do, namely, to inspire God s people to work together to bring about God s Kingdom of love, justice, and peace in the world. He is also called to give people hope that, with the help of God, good will overcome evil, love will conquer hate, and the darkness will be broken by Christ, our Light! The sense of enthusiasm, joy, and hope that have come with the election of Pope Francis come at a most appropriate time in the Church s calendar. For this Thursday, we begin the celebration of the great Easter Triduum that continues until Sunday evening. These days celebrate the hope and joy that are ours because of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ In the remainder of the column I would like to tell you about the main liturgies of the Triduum. I hope this will inspire you to join us for these beautiful services. HOLY THURSDAY, March 28 There is only one Mass on Holy Thursday. That Mass, known as the Mass of the Lord s Supper will take place at 7:30 pm. When you come into the church, you will notice that the door to the tabernacle will be open and the candle next to it will not be burning. On this night, which celebrates the institution of the Eucharist, we begin with the absence of the Blessed Sacrament. Following the homily, the feet of parish representatives will be washed. This will be done in response to the Gospel Reading for this night that relates how Jesus washed the feet of his Apostles at the Last Supper and told them, I have given you a model to follow so that just as I have done for you, you should also do. The washing of feet reminds you and me we are to be of service. Just before the collection, which will benefit the hungry and homeless, the Holy Oils used for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Anointing of the Sick, will be brought into the church. These oils, blessed by the Archbishop are brought to all the parishes of the Archdiocese. After they are presented, the oils are placed in the shrine next to our baptismal font. The Mass then continues and reaches its highpoint with the consecration and the reception of Holy Communion. We respond to the invitation of the Lord given at the Last Supper, Take and eat, this is my Body. Take and 3 drink, this is my Blood. Extra hosts are consecrated at this Mass for distribution on Good Friday, when Mass is not celebrated. These hosts are brought in solemn procession to a special tabernacle located in the alcove on the Grand Street side of the church. GOOD FRIDAY, March 29 On Good Friday, Mass is not celebrated. Instead at 3 pm there is the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord. It begins with three readings, including the Passion of Jesus according to Saint John. After the readings, there are ten solemn prayers of petitions that embrace the needs of the Church and of all the world. Then the cross is reverently carried into the church. We come forward to individually adore the cross on which hung the Savior of the world. Following the time of adoration, the hosts that were consecrated during the Mass of Holy Thursday are brought to the altar. We then come forward to receive Holy Communion. After this, the service quickly comes to its conclusion. HOLY SATURDAY, March 30 The Easter Vigil, which takes place at 8:30 pm, is the highlight of this day and of the entire church year. The service begins in darkness and moves to the lighting of the large Easter Candle. The light then spreads to the candles of the congregation. We sing the Easter Proclamation that announces our salvation in Christ. Following this, we listen to nine readings from scripture which proclaim the wondrous story of God s love for his creation and for his people. The readings end with the Gospel of the Resurrection. After the readings, the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation are celebrated. We witness the birth of new Christians and new members of God s Church. Following this we renew our baptismal commitment and are sprinkled with water from the font. We then celebrate the Eucharist and we join the newly baptized and confirmed in receiving Holy Communion. EASTER SUNDAY, March 31 The Mass of Easter Sunday includes a solemn Gospel Procession through the Church, the renewal of our baptismal promises, and a sprinkling with holy water. The Mass includes the glorious hymns of Easter and the return of the word Alleluia to the liturgy. EASTER GENEROSITY The generosity of God s love seen in the liturgies of the Easter Triduum and in his gift of a new pope for our Church should inspire us to be generous in return. We ask you to put that generosity into action by making a thoughtful, sacrificial gift in our Easter Collection. Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on the following dates: 50 th Anniversary on Sunday, April 28 at 3pm; 25 th & 5th Anniversaries on Sunday, May 5 at 3pm. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Luke 22:14-23:56. Today is Palm Sunday. At the beginning of Mass we remember a happy day. It is a day when Jesus came into the City of Jerusalem to celebrate Passover and people were excited. They cheered him on and waived palm branches in the air. Later this week, we will celebrate Holy Thursday, commonly known as the Last Supper. This is when Jesus gave us the Sacrament of the Eucharist, when he turns bread and wine into his body and blood. Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee Later this week we also learn that not everyone was happy to see Jesus in Jerusalem. There were those who did not like him. They would not believe in Jesus. They did not believe he was the Son of God. On Friday, known as Good Friday, we will hear about the horrible things that these people did to Jesus. They beat him, made fun of him and nailed him to a cross where he would die. Jesus could have been mad and angry at the crowd of people for what they did to him. But instead, before Jesus died on the cross, he prayed to God to forgive them. He prayed to God to help them see what they had done. By dying on the cross, Jesus saved us from our sins and he taught us to forgive the people who hurt us those who hurt our feelings, make fun of us, who do not like us, those who bully us. Jesus suffered the worst kind of bullying to ever exist so that we would be saved and live with him always in Heaven because he loved us SO much. Jesus gives us himself in the bread and wine of the Eucharist. MISSION OF THE WEEK On Friday, I will look at the cross and thank Jesus Christ for his great love for me!
