STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. MATTHEW 5:3 This one confuses people. Replace the word humble for poor and it makes more sense. People who are humble recognize their dependence on God and trust that He will provide all that they need. Unfortunately, for many of us, pride and ego enter our lives and we think we can live without God. Remember God first in all circumstances MASS BOOK NOW OPEN Saint Joseph s 2018 Mass Book has now opened. 3 Since this is Catholic Schools Week, which shows our pride in America s hundreds of Catholic schools and the important impact they have had, it is a good opportunity for us to look at their humble beginning in the life and work of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton ( ), the first American citizen to be canonized. The daughter of upper class Episcopalians, at age 20 she married William Seton, a wealthy shipping merchant, with whom she had five children. Their business went bankrupt when many of its ships were sunk in the misfortunes of war. And, even worse, William became ill with tuberculosis, then a usually fatal disease. The couple went to Italy late in 1803 in the hope that its milder climate would benefit William s health, but he died soon after arriving there. Elizabeth became a friend of the Filicchi family, devout Catholics who inspired Elizabeth to become Catholic, a step she took soon after returning to New York, much to the opposition of her family, which she became alienated from. This estrangement also led to the failure of a school she started with the hope that it would enable her to support her children. After this, responding to an invitation of a priest who had heard of her difficulties, Elizabeth and her children moved to Baltimore in 1808, where, with the help of a few women who shared her ideals, she began a boarding school, which moved to Emmitsburg, Maryland soon after Elizabeth and her companions took their first religious vows in Elizabeth undertook her work with a strong faith, trusting in what she called FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 29, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK the protecting presence the consoling grace of my Redeemer and God. He raises me from the Dust to feel that I am near Him, He drives away all sorrow to fill me with his consolations He is my guide my friend and Supporter With such a guide can I fear, with such a friend shall I not be satisfied, with such a supporter can I fall. In February of 1810, three Emmitsburg children joined Elizabeth s daughters and two other students from the Baltimore school to make up the enrollment of America s first Catholic parish school. It later became a boarding school for children of well-off families, but even then it retained a section for local day students who could afford no tuition at all. Joseph Dirvin, one of St. Elizabeth s biographers, described its typical daily schedule: (continued above) 3 The children rose at a quarter to six, and were in chapel for morning prayer at a quarter after. There was a short study period either before or after Mass, depending upon when the priest arrived, and breakfast was at 7:30. Classes began at eight and continued until 11:30, when the children said the Rosary in common. The recreation time after dinner lasted until three o clock. The girls then went to their respective classrooms and started the afternoon session with a brief adoration. There was another recreation period at five, and then study until supper at 7:15. After supper the older girls listened to the reading of a spiritual book, while the younger ones often went right to bed. Discipline was firm, but kind. Elizabeth s version of having children stand in the corner was to have them sit in front of a picture of Jesus the Redeemer and think about it. One student who experienced this corrective was Mary Harper, whose father was a general, a lawyer, a congressman and then a senator. When she boasted to a classmate, Do you know who I am? I am the daughter of General Robert Goodloe Harper!, she soon found herself contemplating the picture until she got the point that her family s status didn t excuse her from exercising the virtue of humility. Our Saint Joseph School is one our parish has long been justifiably proud of. Thanks to the efforts of our principal, Mrs. Colette Vail, and her fine faculty and staff, and to the confidence and very active involvement of the families who entrust their children to their care, We have a well run Blue Ribbon school that operates under the guidance of as fine a school board as exists in the Archdiocese. I hope you will continue to support our school with your prayers and in any practical ways that occur to you. Catholic education will always be crucial to the continued wellbeing of our Church. Msgr. David Hubba BLESSING OF THROATS In honor of the Feast of St. Blaise which occurs on February 3, there will be individual blessing of throats after all this weekend after all Masses and after morning Masses (7:00 and 8:30 am) on the feast day as well. ADORATION FEBRUARY 1 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday, February 1 in Mary s Chapel from 9:00 am 5:00 pm. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend.

The names of the 50/50 raffle winners will be drawn at the dinner. Proceeds of the event will go toward repair and maintenance of our church. Be sure to circle March for a very special Lenten Mission here at Saint Joseph Parish. Fr. Francis Mary along with several other Friars of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal will offer three nights of prayer and reflection with emphasis on conversing with the Lord, forgiveness and God s mercy. You may be familiar with the Friars from their EWTN program Sunday Night Prime which is broadcast every Sunday at 8:00 pm. The Friars also recently received pontifical recognition from Pope Francis. In addition to the talks (conducted before the exposed Blessed Sacrament), the Friars will provide music for each evening, the opportunity for Confession, and a Eucharistic healing procession on the final night. They will also make available for purchase books by Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Fr. Andrew Apostoli. THE FRIARS WILL ALSO PREACH AT ALL OUR MASSES THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 3-4. 6 BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP BEGINS AT SAINT JOSEPH PARISH ON MARCH 3 APRIL 28 When grieving the loss of a loved one individuals may feel overwhelmed and lonely. Adapting to life after the death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Recognizing that by virtue of our baptism into the Christian faith we are called by Jesus to minister to one another, our parish community of Saint Joseph will facilitate a Bereavement Support Group led by Sister Josefina Morales and Kurt Strohbach for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Parishioners from other churches are also welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 8 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from March 3 through April 28. An 8-week Bereavement Ministry Facilitator Training Program is now open for registration. The course is offered by the Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark. Two hour sessions begin in February and continue into April. If you are a parishioner of Saint Joseph interested in attending this course with the goal of become a Facilitator in our parish, Saint Joseph will pay your tuition ($175). Participants must meet the requirements of the Safe Environment Program of the Archdiocese TRACK REGISTRATION FEBRUARY 12 Registration for Saint Joseph Parish Track program is open to any child in Kindergarten through Grade 8 enrolled in Saint Joseph School or in our parish Religious Education Program. There are no try-outs or cuts! Running events include the 50 Meter and 100 M dash, the 400 M, 800 M and 1600 M runs. Relay races are held for all grades. Field events include the long jump, broad jump, softball throw and shot put (Grades 7 & 8 only). Practices are typically held twice a week. In-person registration will take place in the Saint Joseph School GYM FOYER on Sunday, February 12 from 10:00-11:30 am. Registrations can also be dropped off at Saint Joseph School Main Office, 305 Elm St., Oradell, NJ Please put Attn: Chris Haney/Saint Joseph Track on envelope. Registration fee is $55 per child/$90 per family until February 28. A late registration fee (after 2/28) increases the cost to $65 per child/$100 per family.
