JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ GIVING THOUGHT The financial gift that we place in the collection basket not only helps to support our parish, it also signifies the offering of ourselves to God. Just as Jesus gave of himself to God the Father, as his followers we are to do the same. Giving of our money in the collection is a sign of our willingness to give of ourselves. If we cannot make a sacrificial, generous gift of our money, how can we ever expect to be able to give to God what is even more important, namely, our will, our heart, our very selves in service to Christ and His Church? OUR NEW BAPTISM PREPARATION PROGRAM Our parish has a new, exciting baptism program designed to help parents reflect on this sacrament and what it means to be a part of God s Church. This program s primary purpose is not to prepare parents to celebrate the day when the waters of baptism will be poured over their child, but rather to help parents reflect on the meaning of their own baptism and on the Catholic Faith they wish to share with their child. The baptism preparation program, presented by members of our parish, has several components spread over a period of months, beginning as soon as the third month of pregnancy. Please contact the parish office for further information, schedules, and registration. ( ) or (baptism@sjcnj.org). "GOOD NEWS" IS IN the greenhouse The Good News for Little Ones Program resumes today, Sunday September 18 during the 9 am & 10:30 am Masses. The Good News for Little Ones program, for children 6 months through 4 years of age, provides a safe and comfortable environment for children while their parents attend Sunday Mass. Please bring your little ones to our beautiful new location in the greenhouse classroom in our Lower School on Elm Street. For those who might not be aware, the greenhouse is the new full day early children program of Saint Joseph School for little ones who are three and four years of age. GOOD NEWS FOR LITTLE ONES NEEDS VOLUNTEERS To insure a quality program and a safe environment for these Little Ones, volunteers are needed to help care for the children. Interested adults, teenagers and students in grades 6, 7 & 8 wishing to volunteer to help look after the Little Ones, please contact Arlene Kennedy, the coordinator of Good News, for Little Ones at the Religious Education Office ( ).
2 THE PASTOR S COLUMN SHORT BUT IMPORTANT This column is shorter than usual because there are just so many important parish announcements in this bulletin. THAT IS A GOOD THING! The month of September is a particularly busy one as the parish once again gets moving at top speed. I want to give you a quick overview of some things coming up: HOMILIES & THE MASS & THE MISSAL This weekend we begin a series of ten homilies on the Mass and on changes in wording that will be coming in the liturgy at the end of November. These changes are occurring because the Church has issued a new English language version of the Roman Missal, the official book that contains the prayers used at Mass. These homilies will not only help us to better appreciate and understand the Mass, they will also help us to better pray the Mass. FAMILY FUN DAY This Saturday, September 24, is our FAMILY FUN DAY & CRAFT FAIR from 10 am to 4 pm at the Lower School located on Elm Street. Come and walk the boardwalk of games, crafts, décor, handmade items, food, jewelry and much more. You can find details about our FAMILY FUN DAY AND CRAFT FAIR else where in this bulletin. MOVING FORWARD Work continues on Forward in Faith 2016, the strategic plan for our church and school. There will be a parish wide session dealing with the plan on Tuesday, October 4, at 7:30 pm in the school gym. To prepare for that event see the article in today s bulletin and the ones leading up to the session. STEWARDSHIP DAY Members of our Parish Pastoral Council, assisted by a great group of volunteers, continue to plan our first ever STEWARDSHIP DAY set for Saturday, October 22. This day will give all of us an opportunity to do a few hours of volunteer work by taking part in various service projects. You will hear more about this next weekend. OUR SCHOOLS OPEN Saint Joseph School opened two weeks ago, and the greenhouse, our early childhood program where little scholars begin to blossom, opened last week. Things are going wonderfully, and everyone is most impressed with the new look in the buildings and with the on going improvements in our academic program. There is definitely a new spirit in the school. Learn more at our school website sjsusa.org Love, Father Tom Iwanowski 25 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 18, 2011 A MESSAGE FROM FATHER RAUL A REPORT ON SPAIN & WORLD YOUTH DAY As you may know, last month I went to Spain to take part in World Youth Day, to participate in a pilgrimage, and also to have some vacation time. The pilgrimage to Madrid was a time of Grace and Blessing from God. I did not go alone, but accompanied a group of 80 young people from St Mary s Church in Plainfield. Equipped with a processional cross, at least seven guitars, two clarinets, four drums, two loud speakers and other small instruments, the youth began their pilgrimage with the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Mass. During our journey we prayed morning, evening, and night prayer every day, celebrated Mass, and announced the love of God to everyone we encountered on our way. We travelled most of the time by bus but we also walked a lot visiting sanctuaries, basilicas, cathedrals and other holy places. As we walked we sang and prayed through the main streets, we stopped in the main public squares and parks to sing and dance. Some young people even had the courage to take the microphone and to tell everyone how God makes a difference in their lives. At the end, we would invite everyone to attend the World Youth Day with the Pope Benedict in Madrid. On the way to Spain the youth visited London and, by God s providence, the riots had ceased just two days before. When the young pilgrims arrived in London they began their mission on the city s streets. Unexpectedly, they met with other American pilgrims and decided to walk and pray together. There were around two hundred young pilgrims. People were happy to see them and some of the British people we met said: At last, we see something peaceful and positive happening in the streets of London this is exactly what we needed. After two days in London we travelled to Barcelona- Spain. We visited the famous basilica of the Sagrada Familia (Sacred Family) and the monastery of Montserrat. We were impressed by the beauty of the Churches in Spain and its rich Christian roots. From there we went to Zaragoza and visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar. After spending four hours in this place, we went back to the bus and continued our journey towards Madrid. Peace, Father Raúl Silva to be continued in next Sunday s Bulletin.

URGENT NEED FOR CATECHISTS & ADULT ASSISTANTS Classes begin this week and there remains an urgent need for catechists and adult assistants at many of the grade levels. Catechists are given a teacher s guide and lesson plans that will give you detailed information to help you conduct your class. Adult Assistants help the catechist in the classroom. Our goal is to have two adults in each classroom. Adult Assistants are not directly responsible for teaching a class, but offer extra adult supervision for the class. For detailed information about volunteering, please contact the Religious Education Office ( ). Please prayerfully consider responding to this need in our parish and help our parish children learn about our faith. KICK-OFF BBQ NEXT SUNDAY. QUICK JOURNEY BEGINS September 29 This is an eight-part video based series that provides an excellent introduction and overview of the Bible from a Catholic perspective. This study makes the complexity of the Bible simple. Our class here at St. Joseph Parish will meet on Thursday evenings starting September 29 and will be completed before Thanksgiving. If you are interested in signing up for this or any of our other Bible series, contact Pat Fakharzadeh ( ) or (bible@sjcnj.org) to find out about space availability. BAKE FOR THE BOARDWALK BAKERY Our Family Fun Day & Craft Fair, set for Saturday, September 24, in our Lower School is in need of home baked goodies for the bake sale table. We could really use some help from our bakers out there who can put together a goodie or two to be sold at the event. If you can help us in this way, we would really appreciate it. We only ask that you please identify any baked goods if they have nuts or peanut butter in them for the sake of those people who are allergic. So please get out the bake pans and light the oven and put your talents to work for our children. Our school is a very important part of our parish If you can help in this way, please call Jeanine O'Malley ( ) Thank you! BE SURE TO VISIT OUR WEBSITES sjcnj.org our parish site sjsusa.org our school & greenhouse site STRATEGIC PLANNING Forward In Faith 2016 With new exciting changes taking place at our parish, we need to continue keeping our eye on the long-range vision for the future. To do this we are keeping our parish/school strategic planning process on track. The Steering Committee is working with our consultants in developing key parish goals and specific strategies. The planning process focuses on eight primary areas of parish life: Worship, Leadership, Lifelong Faith Formation, our Catholic School, Evangelization, Service, Stewardship, and Community/Family Life. Keep in mind that the goals which are evolving in this process come from the strengths and needs that you, the parish community, have identified and shared. The Steering Committee is reviewing and editing the initial goals. Now your input is needed once again. In this and future bulletins, and on the website, we will present these goals for your review. Goals for three sections of the plan will be highlighted each week. This will culminate in a second parish-wide consultation Tuesday evening, Oct 4. This week we highlight the goals for Worship, Leadership, and Lifelong Faith Formation. Read the goals and be ready to respond to them on October 4. You might also think of action plans to make sure we achieve them. WORSHIP Continue to create an environment of welcoming, reverence and holiness, thanksgiving and praise at each Mass. Celebrate liturgies that unite and enrich us as a parish, while embracing the unique needs, backgrounds and various ages of our members. Enrich the vibrancy of our Masses and other celebrations that enhance devotion and invite joyful participation. LEADERSHIP Develop a culture of broad-based participation in parish leadership organizations to inspire parishioners to share their talents. Communicate regularly and effectively parish goals, rationale for decisions and the accomplished results. Increase dialogue and collaboration among the councils, committees, advisory groups, ministries and other groups to enhance mutual understanding. Solicit ideas and insights from parishioners regularly to share with the Parish Council in order to enhance collaboration on decision making and implementation of goals. LIFELONG FAITH FORMATION Provide education/formation for parishioners and staff to foster a deeper understanding of church and nurture the faith and spiritual growth of all age groups in the parish. Encourage and assist families to develop spirituality in the home. Encourage and assist all catechists to attain catechist training and certification.
